PRIORY VOLLEYBALL CLUB 1998 JUNIOR VOLLEYBALL FESTIVAL U11 / U12 / U13 / U14 HUTTON MOOR LEISURE CENTRE, WESTON SUPER MARE SATURDAY DECEMBER 12th 12.00 to 17.00 Following the success of previous Priory junior volleyball festivals we would like to offer another opportunity for teams to play against each other. It is very suited to teams playing their first matches - it is a novice tournament with the refereeing intended to help the players learn the game. We will be particularly pleased to welcome teams from primary schools. Age groups will be U11, U12 and U13 (3 a side) and U14 (4 a side) competitions and played on reduced (badminton) size court. Players of either sex may play in each team. There will be trophies for the winners and runners up in each age group. The date for age qualification is August 31st 1998. The entry fees will be £6.00 per team. Please enclose a cheque payable to Priory Volleyball Club. We hope to see many entries - please help us to encourage junior development. We are grateful to North Somerset Council for their technical and financial support. Last season the festival was very popular with nearly 50 entries. The tournament would be difficult to run with any more teams and it will therefore be necessary to turn down entries once we have reached that figure - or ask clubs / schools to merge players into a smaller number of teams. It may also be necessary to combine adjacent age group competitions if the numbers do not work out well. Please therefore apply early for places for your team(s). Please return the form below to Ron Richards, 3 Woodside Grove, Henbury, Bristol, BS10 7RF (tel no 01179 506965) by December 3rd. .....................................__________......................... Spot light on the Plymouth Pumas Volleyball Club - from their web site PUMAS BACK ON THE PROWL The Plymouth Pumas Volleyball Club are back in the South West league after an absence of six years. As the most successful and established club in the Plymouth area, the Pumas who started life back in 1982 as the Mayflower club are looking forward to the challenge which life in the South West League can bring. Reforming in 1987 as the Plymouth Pumas the team completely dominated the Plymouth and District volleyball scene for over a decade. Winning Plymouth and District league and championship titles became second nature to the team which has done so much for volleyball in the Plymouth area. Their success stretched across the South West as they were champions of the South West Premier League on three occasions. It was on the back of the Plymouth Pumas that opportunities for National League volleyball came to Plymouth. The Pumas who from their success in South West volleyball gained promotion to the National league, initially funded those players who were keen to play National league volleyball. Plymouth has never looked back with National League involvement as strong as ever. The Pumas have been responsible for introducing many of the top Plymouth players into volleyball through their much envied and established coaching sessions. The team have always adopted an open door policy where players from all over the Plymouth region have been welcome to participate in Pumas training. The clubs team coaches Alan Lemin and Steve Allen have been the backbone of the Pumas set up and despite an indifferent couple of seasons remain as dedicated as ever to the team which has given them so much success and pleasure. Last season the team who have established close links with HMS Drake, have been encouraging the youth development at Lipson Community College through a close working partnership with Lipson sports teacher Chris Bamforth. Both Chris and Steve Allen have done a tremendous amount of work with the junior set up at Lipson and are quickly establishing a team for the future. Alan Lemin attributes the success of the Pumas to a core of players which have seen the Pumas through thick and thin. " Over the years we have established a family spirit at the club" said Lemin " We not only play volleyball together but our families socialise together also, which I believe has greatly increased our team spirit and will to win". The Plymouth Pumas Volleyball Club main training session is held on a Tuesday evening between 7 and 9pm in the main gym at the Royal Navy establishment, HMS Drake in Plymouth. We are a civilian club but for the past 3 years have been training with service personnel attached to HMS Drake. If you wish to join our training sessions, service personnel with access to the facilities at HMS Drake can meet us in the main gym, however civilians with no official access must meet with members of the team before passing through the gate at the Camels Head entrance. Please contact Steve Allen for details at steveallen@labatt.demon.co.uk After 9pm, training normally continues in the Royal Naval Arms public house which is accross the road from the main gate at HMS Drake, where arguments as to who should have gone for a ball, where the setter should have been placing the attacks and which Spice Girl should be Prime Minister can ofter be heard. If you wish to find out our views on the Spice Girls before training with us, then come to the Royal Naval Arms on a Tuesday night and ask Georgina or John behind the bar to point us out if its not obvious. For the past year, the Pumas have also joined up with the volleyball club at Lipson Community College to help with their training. The clubs have come together to raise the level of training for members of both clubs with an emphasis on providing a well defined path for the college youth team. The under 18's team now plays under the Lipson Pumas and several of their players have now progressed to become regulars in the Pumas team. Anyone interested in playing volleyball for the Pumas should contact Steve Allen steveallen@labatt.demon.co.uk

HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL FOR THE DISABLED The Origin of Volleyball - The start of Sport for the Disabled Sir (then Doctor) Ludwig Guttmann - Neurologist and Neurosurgeon - emigrated with his family to England in March 1939 as a refugee from Nazi Germany. At the beginning of 1944, while he was doing research at Oxford University, he was asked by the British Government to set up a Spinal Injury Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. At this institute, he put into practice unique ideas of treatment and rehabilitation of spinal cord paralysed patients - hitherto regarded as hopeless and helpless cripples with only a short expectation of life. That he was successful in establishing a spinal cord injury service, a model to the whole world, is a matter of history. But there was a particular aspect of his philosophy and foresight that was to have far-reaching influence on the lives, not only of spinal cord paralysed persons, but to many other types of disabled persons all over the world. Sir Ludwig Guttmann used to say: "If I ever did one good thing in my medical career, it was to introduce sport into the treatment and rehabilitation programme of spinal cord sufferers and other severely disabled". In 1948, the first Stoke Mandeville Games were held with a participation of 16 paralysed wheelchair competitors in archery. The Games became "International" in 1952 with the participation of a Dutch team of war veterans. Sitting Volleyball The first sports club for the disabled was established in the Netherlands only as late as 1953. Athletics and Sitzball - originating from Germany - were the main sports. Soon it was found that Sitzball, which is played sitting down on the floor, was too passive; more mobile forms of sports were looked for. In 1956, the Dutch Sports Committee introduced a new game called Sitting Volleyball, a combination of sitzball and volleyball. Since then Sitting Volleyball has grown into one of the biggest sports practised in competition not only by the disabled in the Netherlands, but also by interested "able-bodied" volleyball players with an injury of the ankle or knee. Development Since 1967, international competitions have taken place, but we had to wait until 1978 before the International Sports Organisation for the Disabled (ISOD) accepted Sitting Volleyball in its programme. The first official International Tournament - under the umbrella of the ISOD - took place in 1979 in Haarlem (the Netherlands). In 1980, it was accepted as a Paralympic Sport with the participation of seven teams. The international development can be called tumultuous. Clinics have been held all over the world and regular World, European and Regional Championships are organised annually. Since 1993, Sitting Volleyball championships are organised for men and women. It has become one of the main team-sports in the Paralympic Programme. It is a fast, exciting and crowd pleasing sport, which can show the atletic skills of disabled sportsmen(women). Sitting Volleyball has the radiation to grow into a sport in which the disabled and non-disabled persons can play on a high technical level. Standing Volleyball Standing Volleyball was played by disabled sportsmen long before the International Federation was founded. It has its roots in Great Britain and was originally only played by amputees. Due to the variations of amputation, a classification system was set up and players were put into one of nine categories. To encourage those with a more severe amputation to participate, a point system on court was introduced - each player received points for the degree of amputation - and 13 points was the minimal team requirement on court. In 1984, it was decided to open up the game to allow other disability groups to take part, thereby encouraging more nations to participate. Although this initially created more classification problems, the WOVD finally, after four years, established criteria for classification, which includes those players with various arm or leg disabilities. Development Small international competitions have taken place since the 1960s, although it was not until 1976 before volleyball was accepted into the Paralympic Programme in Toronto. Since 1980, volleyball has had a regular international calendar. Copyright ©1997 WOVD ========================================================================

Acosta Yells at Players - from Spike It! Last week I told you about the upcoming changes to the 1999 FIVB rules, the most controversial being the uniform requirements for women. Last Tuesday, November 10th, long-time President Ruben Acosta criticized players at the 1998 World Championships for showing a "lack of professionalism" over the aforementioned uniform requirements. After handing down fines of US$3000.00 to five teams last Friday for wearing baggy styled shirts, Mr. Acosta, while addressing representatives from the eight teams attending the medal round, more-than-sarcastically thanked the players for creating extra media interest. He warned the players that volleyball is in the same boat as tennis and soccer, loosing interest worldwide. Acosta also insulted basketball players by inferring that the "who cares" attitude that volleyball players exhibit puts the sport of volleyball in danger of becoming like the National Basketball Association, with its baggy shorts and trash-talking.(1) Speaking to the players he stated, "You are not basketball players. You are professionals in national leagues, so you must act responsibly." "But your (the volleyball players) actions at these championships have let us down. Looking to Sydney in 2000, either we change our sloppy image or the sport will not survive." Screening - RSV >can anyone explain the rules for screening? The primary change in the rules on screening occurred several years ago. Prior to the change in interpretation, a referee could call a screen when the serving team met one of a number of criteria. These criteria DID NOT include whether or not the person was ACTUALLY screened. The new emphasis is on whether or not the receiver of a serve was actually screened from seeing the flight of the ball. A high looping serve can be seen by all the receivers no matter how the serving team stands. Therefore, no screen will be called. It was much easier to call screens prior to the change, since the R1 did not need to judge whether the receiver was actually screened. If a team is passing perfectly, it is difficult to argue that they are being screened. It is pretty tough for the R1 to make this judgment. Hence, few R1's are willing to impose this judgment on the game. There was a screen called in the World Championships two years ago by one of the USA officials. He said that three very tall players stood together and the server dropped a low serve right over their outstretched arms. That one seems relatively easy. Anything else becomes a gray area. Generally, officials will try to caution a team that they might be called for a screen unless they bend at the waist or spread apart if the official sees something that looks like a screen.
