Competition Format

With reference to the Farnborough tournament above, their tournament format is similar to a Squash or Table tennis ladder. Does anyone else have an unusual tournament format? If so, send it in. Dave.Reece@ndirect.co.uk

The tournament works by having graded courts and 'winner stays on' style challenge; each team being awarded points for each game they win. Each team can choose where they would like to enter the competition but after this they must move between courts according to the following rules:

1 A team must move to the next court up if they win two consecutive games. If however a team is on the highest level court they must join the back of the queue for that court.
2 A team may not move to a lower skilled court without first losing on the court to which they are assigned.
3 Movements up and down are limited to one court at a time; i.e. you can not play on court 4 then on court 2 without having played on court 3.
4 Once you have lost a game you can choose to rejoin the queue for the court you are playing on or join the queue for the next lower level court.

A game won on a higher court will win more points than a game won on a lower court; i.e. court 1 (1 point for a win), court 2 (2 points for a win) etc. There will be a prize for the days overall winner who will be the team which has the highest points total. There will also be prizes for the winning team on each court; this will be the team that has won the most times on that court.

Depending on demand there will be one court for ladies only; ladies teams will be able to play on all courts following above rules or choose to play ladies only. Each game consists of one set to 25 points and each team should have either 3 or 4 players on court.

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST

Whitefield Photos - by Jon McGugan

Whitefield 22nd July, indoor finals: Women's - London Malory beat GB Students. Men's - London Malory beat Beat Video Time St. Truiden (from Belgium) on the final point.

Here is the link to some of my pictures from Sunday (I haven't  done Saturdays yet).  http://www.mcgugan.co.uk/volleyball

Q. Both myself and Jon use digital cameras, where you have choice of various White Balance settings, at Whitefield I use tungsten correction with the brightness turned up a notch or two. I asked Jon, what White Balance setting he uses?

A. I let the camera take care of WB (I can adjust it afterwards, but when you have a D30 (or any of the Nikon's) you can do that sort of thing). The auto WB was good for most of the shots but failed on the "wide angle" shots I took. This was probably due to getting lots of the yellow floor in the shots.

All my shots were at 1600ASA 1/500 at f2 or 1/350 at f2.5. After Saturday I switched to manual exposure as it was too easy to get the overhead lights in the shots which then got the exposure wrong. The best angle I find for the shots I like is about 2 metres behind the team benches which wasn't possible at the finals but was possible (but from 1st ref's side) during the men's semi's.

Beach world championships 2001
Live TV coverage on British Eurosport this weekend, if you missed it, you can catch up on all the News from the organisers web site at  http://www.beachvolleyball.at/index_engl.html

Adriana Behar and Shelda on Saturday won the 2001 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships to retain the women's title they won in Marseilles, France in 1999. The match was a spirited All-Brazilian affair against Sandra Pires and Tatiana Minello, finally defeated - but far from disgraced - against the world's best who won in straight sets (21-16 and 21-18).

The winning pair fell to their knees in the sand as the final point went their way. Then they hugged affectionately before joining Pires and Minello on the court for a shower of celebratory champagne.

The bronze medal went to the Czech pair Eva Celbova and Sona Dosoudilova who beat Americans Elaine Youngs and Barbra Fontana 2-0 (21-15, 21-16) in a match played earlier. - FIVB

Barry Island's first Grand Prix is a success - from beachvolleyball.org.uk

Following a Grand Prix warm up tournament last year Barry Island moved up into the main events in 2001. Due to a late change in the date of the event a few of the top teams could not attend, however that did not stop the high standard of beach volleyball in very tricky conditions. The rain had kindly stopped for the event but the wind decided to test the skill of all of the players. Players performed remarkably well in what sometimes could be described as gale force.

In the Women's competition Amanda Glover and Audrey Cooper continued to dominate the series. Playing with control and consistency they were able to easily overcome surprise finalists Nancy Dome and Venessa Malone. Cathy Norman and Melissa Coutts had to be content with a hard fought third place against close rivals Simone Lewis and Julie Smith, who managed to upset the form book by beating the number two seeds in an earlier round.

In the Men's competition local hero Yves Dufourt very nearly pleased a good local crowd by making the final. However he and his partner Vincent Jacod just lost out to number three seeds Colin Paterson and Nigel Malone 13-15 in the third. In the other semi-final Grand Prix leaders Stuart Watson and Clayton Lucas lost out to Australian pairing Laurie Gerschwitz and Rowan Searle. The final showed why these teams were there, despite the conditions they both were still able to play all of the shots in the book. Rowan showing composed setting and Laurie made the most of the conditions cranking hard cross court into the wind on numerous occasions. In the end the Australians came through deserved winners but the English pair showed just why they were number three seeds.

NIVA Update

Volleyball on the banks of the Belfast River Lagan seems a dream. But such a tournament is being planned before the summer is out. Officials of NIVA have agreed to support a charity event with outdoor courts and if the weather is as kind as the prospective organisers and their sponsors,
a very needy Charity will be the beneficiary of a weekend's Beach Volleyball on the shores of the city's revived river. Details are still to be finalised but the news should be confirmed early in August.

Belfast City Ladies have worked hard to beat the ups and downs of the weather this week and coach Sonia Coey gave over 50 children the chance to play volleyball at the Belfast Council summer scheme in Ormeau Park, south Belfast. With the assistance of club coach Anne Sloan, young Sonia from Dundonald took charge with children aged from 7-17 years and got them going with volleyballs indoors and outdoors when the weather allowed. "The funny thing was that the younger ones took to the game more easily than the older children who occasionally play other team sports," Sonia said.

The busy summer continues with youngsters hoping to represent the Province in volleyball at the annual summer camp for the Under 16's squad this week at Waterside House in Craigavon. "The first squad of youngsters give up holiday time to take part in the part-residential event," explained coach Paul McIlwaine. "It is the intention of NIVA to develop the summer camp in future years to take in regional and more localized squads in Fermanagh, Belfast and Derry."

Beach Volleyball World Championships 2001 - FIVB
Promoters and organisers put the finishing touches to the stadium and facilities for the 2001 Beach Volleyball Championships on Tuesday and everything is set for a great event at this southern Austrian lakeside resort. This year's championships are, according to FIVB Beach Volleyball Co-ordinator Angelo Squeo, well on their way to being a truly international event. "This is a great atmosphere," said Squeo. "We have to work towards the sport being truly international and here we are on the right track," he added, waving around at this impressive venue.

Set on the shores of picturesque Lake Worther, the main stadium comprises 4 courts and a warm-up court, with additional venues to the west at Velden and Maria Worth. Matches from Wednesday through to Sunday's final are expected to attract some 60,000 spectators and reports indicated that the region was almost booked out as fans poured into this resort, currently enjoying ideal high summer temperatures.

Some 450 journalists will report from the championships and television coverage is to total 200 hours, a new hallmark that indicates Beach
Volleyball's increasing level of acceptance as a professional sport. Some 48 pool matches will be played on Wednesday in the women's competition and 16 for the men's competition. Twenty-eight countries covering all continents are represented at the championships, fielding 48 of the world's top men's and women's teams, this year playing for US$ 250,000 in prize money.

Among the men, players to watch will be the Brazilian pair, Emanuel Rego and Alexandre (Tande) Samuel Ramos who already have two wins on the World Tour this season and top three places in five other tournaments. Emanuel is an icon here among the fans, having been part of the winning team in all four previous World Tour stops in Klagenfurt.

Others to watch are Olympic Gold medallists Dain Blanton and Eric Fonoimoana of the U.S.A., whose legendary winner mentality lists them
among the favorites, Swiss pair Paul and Martin Laciga and Argentinean duo Mariano Baracetti and Martin Alejo Conde. Brazilian pair Adriana Brandao Behar and Shelda Kelly Bruno Bede, now playing together for their sixth season are title defenders in the women's competition. They were silver medallists in Sydney to Australians Natalie Cook and Kerri-Ann Pottharst, and join them as title hopefuls.

American pair Elaine Youngs and Barbara Fontana are playing together this year for the first time, but are also flush with confidence with two Tour
wins to their credit.

World championships Update - fivb

Brazil, Cuba, Canada and USA each qualified for the 2002 Men's World Championships in their respective qualification tournaments on the weekend.

Cuba (Pool M), Canada (Pool N) and Brazil (Pool O) each won their pools without loss, while USA, after a five set loss to Canada, qualified as the best second placed team of Pools M and N.

Qualified teams now include ITALY (as 1998 World Champion), CZECH REPUBLIC (Winner of Pool H), GREECE (Winner of Pool L), SPAIN (Winner of Pool F), CUBA (Winner of Pool M), CANADA (Winner of Pool N), U.S.A. (Best 2nd of Pool M-N), ARGENTINA (as organiser) and BRAZIL (Winner of Pool O).

Qualification tournaments will continue throughout August to decide the final 15 teams for the 24 team 2002 Men's World Championships held in
Argentina from 28 September to 13 October 2002.

USA Volleyball Hall of Fame seeks funding

While its day-to-day operations have been scaled back, the dream of a multimillion-dollar Volleyball Hall of Fame is still alive. The staff of the Volleyball Hall of Fame was laid off in the spring and its hours cut back to only weekends, Stephen M. Corrigan, president of its board of directors, said yesterday.

The Hall of Fame, currently located at the Children's Museum in Holyoke Heritage State Park, hopes to reap enough money from its induction ceremonies and related events to be able to remain open additional hours beginning in January, said Corrigan, who is a partner in Mountain View Landscape and Lawn Care Inc. "We basically came to a point where operational funding was at a level where we had to say, 'Time out and let's regroup,'" Corrigan said. While operational funds have dried up, there is still grant money around to look for a site for a future Volleyball Hall of Fame, Corrigan said.

In fall 2000, a $27 million, high-tech plan for a new shrine was unveiled after a Hall of Fame staff member traveled to Peru to get the support of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball. Plans for a 56,000-square-foot facility that include a 190-foot-tall "structural mast" were prepared. Corrigan said the shrine's board of directors hopes to move forward with a new Hall of Fame and plans to do a feasibility study of the three sites under consideration. Corrigan said the key to financing the project is the support of the volleyball federation. He believes it can happen. "I am optimistic that this new proposed Hall of Fame can work. It's going to take the backing of the international or U.S. volleyball to make it happen. There is no way that we or the state can support such a venture," Corrigan said.

World League Stat's - update from Issue 132

> The finalist teams with an exception of Italy are not present in best

> very well in receiving. I will leave it to Cristian Perret to make further

Well, the good performance of France in receiving comes from various key points. First of all, the french libero Hubert Henno is in the very few players who can maintain a high level of performance in this field. His stats show very few errors and a good percentage of "perfect" receives. He is quite under Mirko Corsano (italian libero) for perfect receives but has a lower error percentage.

France can also count on other good player in service reception : Stéphane Antiga (unfortunately injured during the Final-8, Renaud Herpe (injured
during all the WL...but one of the best italian A2 receivers) and Laurent Capet when he plays as second opposite (when he plays as opposite he does not receive).

France's performance on reception could be improved with a better work of Franz Granvorka. Franz played CB last years but he will now move to OH in both French national team and his new club, Poitiers. His stats in the WL Final-8 are not very good and can greatly be improved.

Reception and Service are certainly the French strong points for future years.

Plyometrics = shin splints  - from rsv

I've recently added some Plyometric training to my usual weight and cardio routine and have developed shin splints. I had them one time before when I ran a lot more than I do now and just kept running in spite of them, but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do. Can I expect a few weeks of no impact cardio and cutting out the Plyometrics to help? Ice?

Any help appreciated, thanks.
Rich rich@exit109.com

Hi Rich, Do you stretch very well after you do your Plyometrics? All of the leg muscles need to be stretched really well, especially the calves. You can stretch the shin muscles as well by sitting with one leg crossed over the other, and pointing the toes of the crossed leg down. You should feel this stretch in the shins. The cause of the shin splints might have been doing too much plyos too soon. Try cutting back to see if they go away.

Good luck,
Martha Walz martha@walz-tech.com

I'm looking for the website for the statistics program DataVolley. Does anyone happen to know what their website url is? After a demonstration by Browning of USAV I was most impressed. Then to see him in action at one of the WL matches was really neat.

At what age should children learn volleyball?  - from rsv

At what age should children learn volleyball?
Are there any special equipment or methods that are used?

Thanks,
Jordan Kahn jordanisra@aol.com

My daughter started playing in school at 4'th grade level. Her coach started simple, with underhand serves and bumping. They drill on sets, but rarely have enough upper body strength tho use that during games. By sixth grade they start using three hits. We did have one exceptional fifth grader who could actually overhand serve with the best of them! She could effectively use three hits! By the time our girls graduate, they are all spiking, setting and overhand serving.

FIVB Beach player comments - from rsv

[I will leave out the name.]

The rules have taken awhile to get use to. For me the biggest change has been rally point. Simply because I have very little experience playing volleyball this way probably only 20 matches this way compared to 1000's the old way, so still finding myself double guessing myself in certain circumstances.

But it is getting better. As far as the size of the court, it really has not effected me too much just my serving not as many aces but that is the case with everyone. But on attack I still feel confident. On the 9x9 court I would rarely use the perimeter but my attacks are closer to the outside of the court now which is better I am blocking a lot more balls I probably get 3-6 blocks a match now compared to 1-3 with the 9x9 The jury is still out with all the players on the court size. They are taking stats of matches to compare to last years stats to see if there are more rallies. Some say more rallies I think just more errors (a lot more missed serves, and attacking errors)

This should change as the season goes on The FIVB keeps saying this is a test, and they will revert back to the old rules if the stats show the old system is better.
