THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST
Palm Volleyball Game

I found this VB game for the PalmPilot. I thought others might be interested in it. It looks good on my new M505 with the color screen. I have not tried it on a B&W screen yet. It requires Palm OS 3.0 and my old PalmPilot Professional is just version 2.0. I have played a few games on the demo and am going to purchase it. http://www.palmgear.com/software/

Jerry Strub deletecurlyofstc@yahoo.com

First volleyball game for the Palm OS ever released! Game play includes realistic action, incredible graphics, and computer players with an intelligent volleyball algorithm! Choose one of three skill levels: Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert. While you can probably beat Beginner, you will meet very strong resistance at the Expert level. You can play against a computer or you can watch two computers playing against each other with your choice of either the contemporary or classic volleyball rules!
Shareware $14.95 / Developer: Mercury Development, LLC  The free version of the game allows up to five games.

This game works beautifully on both color and non-color devices! New in version 2.0 is the ability to compete with your friends playing via IR port! Now you may also choose a custom game of 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 points.

Overseas Volleyball Purchases

There are many overseas sites selling Volleyball Equipment, before you diving in and purchase this years stock of Volleyball Balls or you purchase that new club net system. Check out the UK customs site www.hmce.gov.uk

Summary

If the value of goods including P&P is less than £18 you won't be charged duty or VAT.
If you order is more than £18 you'll get hit with a 3.5% import duty and 17.5% VAT.

If goods are ordered on line and posted into the UK from within the EU, there is no custom duties but you will have to pay VAT at the rate of the member state where it was posted

The courier service used will also charge you an administration fee (about £10) for sorting out your import duty and VAT payment, unless you have already pre-arranged that, all these fees are payable on delivery (COD).

You should have a choice of delivery, by air mail or sea/land, in the USA the term shipping costs does not mean by ship.

Tournament Formats

In the last newsletter I asked if anyone had any interesting tournament formats: As well as changing the way tournament structure you can also change the scoring system, the number of players on court, the size of the court or just change the playing surface, see below for some examples...

Handicap Tournament

The following is a handicap format that worked with Side Out scoring and helped the weaker team by 25%. I.E. In 25% of matches the obvious weaker team won.

All matches will be played to a maximum length of one set, i.e. the first to 15 points and by 2 clear points. All matches will also be played within a 20 minute time period. / Time-outs will not be allowed during any match. / All substitutions must be like for like, i.e. male for male, female for female or junior for junior. Substitutions will not be allowed during the last five minutes of the match.

For each starting line up, the team will be awarded the following handicap points by the referee and scorer.
For each Lady and junior (Under 15) player, no handicap points.
For each Male (Over 15) player on court, - 3 points will be added to the teams score.

e.g.
If there are two males on court for team A, that team will start from a score of - 6.
If there are four males on court for team B, that team will start from a score of -12.

Nine Man Volleyball

The games are fun to watch because the rallies are so fast and there's a lot of trash talking across the net. The rules are a little different so I'll explain them.

There are 9 players on the court, 5 at the net and 4 backrow. There are no rotations of players. The backrow players are split into two catergories middle and back. There's one backrow player who stands right in the middleof the court, the middle-middle position, AKA suicide if his front row can't block. The other 3 back row guys are spread out along the back like in 6 man.

Like 6 man, the front row consists of a power hitter, a quick hitter and an off-wing hitter. Now depending on the offensive pattern, there are 2 patterns to the offense: conventional and off-set, you can have either 3 hitters in front of the setter and 1 behind him or you can have 2 hitters to either side.

With conventional, the setter stands in the middle of the net and he's flanked by two quick (or Fai, which means fast in Chinese), or Hook hitters and the wings (power and off). The quick hitters actually grab the ball and throw or hook it down (hence the name hook). But, a lot of the quick hitters have 6 man experience so they hit the 1's instead. The wings also come in for T's and other plays along with the usual array of sets.

With off-set, the setter stands in the normal 6 man position and he has the quick, then a T, the power, and behind him the off. This is by far the most popular offensive line-up.Now, the rules. What 6 man rules call a carry is allowed in 9 man, at least to a certain degree. The player can't hold the ball for a second and then release, but... there's a lot of leniency. Passes are usually made with overhead sets or scooped up with open hands or "chai"-ed or bumped. Chai-ing is a form of passing, a player passes the ball with 2 hands around waist level and the hands forms a sort of cradle for the ball. Old-time setters don't set the ball, they "chai" it. It's pretty deceptive because they usually have their backs to the net and they can then chai it to any hitter, especially the fasts. Friggin' tough to read block when you can't see the ball.

However, the most funkiest rule in 9 man is the play off net. If you play a ball into the net, it negates the previous hit so you can play the ball again. Example, say it's a bad pass with a low trajectory towardsthe net. The setter can bump set it OR he can scoop the ball into the net, the ball rebounds off the net and then the setter sets it perfectly. Pretty cool idea, but when you've been playing 6 man and then 9 man one can get confused.

Like 6 man, a team only gets 3 hits to send it over. But, if your blockers touch the ball it's considered a hit. Any combination of the backrow players can serve, no jumpers however. If the ball touches anyone's head, the play is dead. There are probably some rules I'm forgetting, but this is the gist of the game.

The game can get pretty fast because of the tendency for the quick hits. Not to mention the digs.

Mud Volleyball
Volleyball can be played on a number of different types of playing surface's, this picture of mud volleyball I down loaded from the Turkish Federation (Turkiye Voleybol Federasyonu) web site.

Fistball

The court is 20 meters wide by 50 meters long, divided in half by a 10cm wide webbing strip of plastic, like a vball net top cable without the net. Net height was maybe two meters less (1.6 and 1.8m) for younger children.... Younger kids also can have four contacts per side, they standard is three. There are five players per side. There is also a three meter line at the net. Never did figure out what that was for but I think you had to take off from behind it to fist the ball over. The ball is like a soccer ball, may be a size #4, or maybe a regulation sizd #5.

Basically you hit everything with a fist everything over the net, in a backrow spiker type attack. The other two contacts are like one armed dug or fist ups. The KEY thing is YOU GET ONE BOUNCE per contact... Yes, it is like a huge game of "Newcomb" the one bounce game some PhysEd teachers do in elementary school to intro volleyball... They play two 10 minute halves, stop time.

The World Championships had Germany vs. Austria and about 7,000 spectators in the stands. Participating teams included Brazil, Italy andabout 5 others. The game was created in 1968. Supposedly the Romansplayed a version of this a thousand plus years ago...

World Grand Prix Women.

Preliminary rounds: Some statistical data will be presented on the world grand prix competition for women which has started this month in Asia and which will be completed near end of the month. The current data hence present only 30 % of the preliminary rounds and no firm conclusions on the results will have to be made. Match results however are surprising with three consecutive losses of the Cuban team and the three victories of a transformed Japanese team. Most readers of this will be satisfied with the net victory of the USA team on Russia Attack data show a clear reduction in efficiency of current competitions as compared with previous ones.

Home court rules - The following item from the USA, is about a man who started a Volleyball club in his back yard.

LEWISTON, USA. The city’s Board of Appeals handed a victory Wednesday to a man who has hosted a generation of teen-age volleyball players in his back yard. The board voted 4-2 in favor of Fern Asselin and his Bailey Avenue volleyball court, known as Fern Gully.

The city has no right to force him to close or stop running the games he began 24 years ago for his children, the board decided. Though its use has grown, to about 50 people in all, it’s still small enough to be considered a homeowner’s back yard. The court has been at the center of a controversy within the Bailey Avenue neighborhood. Teens say it’s a safe place to go and have fun. Yet, a few neighbors say Fern Gully draws too many cars, creates too much noise and leaves too much garbage in its wake. (Asselin) is doing something that is creating havoc for the whole neighborhood, said Ann Michaud, who lives just down the street from the court.

After touring Asselin’s court, they met in the City Council chambers where more than 100 people gathered. Little girls carried signs, reading "Save Fern Gully". Neighbors on both sides listened and prepared their comments. The agenda called for a hearing on Asselin’s request for a permit to carry on. But Asselin’s lawyer, former Board of Appeals Chairman Tom Peters, instead challenged the right of the city to demand a permit.

Fern Gully is too informal and too small to force such action, he argued. There are no uniforms, associations or dues. It’s no different than somebody having friends over to swim in a backyard pool or play tennis, he said. Its league isn’t really a league, he said. Members Paula Mortensen, Norman Prevost, Elaine Makas and Norman Savard voted in favor of the decision, classifying the court as an accessory use to a single-family dwelling. Chairman Bruce Damon and Robert Bruder voted against. I think there’s a league there somewhere, Bruder quipped.

Asselin promised he will not expand the court, install lights or lengthen the current four-days-a-week schedule. If he breaks the promise, he knows he would have to return for a permit after all, he said. We’re going home and forget this whole thing happened, Asselin said. The system did work, and we all benefited by it.

Newsletter Poll - (you need to be on-line for your vote to register) or visit the web site. The results of this poll will be published in a future newsletter.

We have been running this question for the last two weeks, so far 79% have said they would attend, however only 2% of readers have voted.

[If there was a grandstand for 2,000 spectators, there would be 1,960 empty seats - just a thought.]

If the FIVB or the European CEV, staged a top Beach event in the UK, would you go along to watch?
