Coaches Required in Durham

Dave, My name is Iain Dunton and I am the Sports Manager at Two leisure centres in County Durham. I am interested in running some volleyball
coaching in our centres. I have tried finding a website for the British Volleyball Federation but can't find one. Would you have any contacts in the Durham area for volleyball coaches or have any idea where I could contact a development officer for volleyball. Any information would be of great assistance.

Glasgow University

Hi, I am writing to you on behalf of the Glasgow University Men's Volleyball Team. We are currently looking for a coach for this and future seasons, as our previous coach retired after the end of last season. We are currently British Uni champions (first Scottish Uni to do so) and have been Scottish League Champions for the last 4 years running. We have a good selection of players again this year. As we tend to get a lot of foreign students, the team can change quite a lot from season to season, but generally the standard has been fairly high. Would you be so kind as to put a notice in your very good news letter. To see if there is anyone available or willing to coach us.

Regards
Steven Spence just_steven@hotmail.com

Kingston University women's volleyball team.

Hi, we need a qualified person to coach our women's team for 2 hours on Tuesday evenings at Tiffin Sports Centre (central Kingston) from 8 until 10pm. Matches normally take place on a Wednesday afternoon or evening - it would be helpful if the coach could attend as many matches as possible.

I have up to a maximum of four hours per week available to pay the coach at a rate of £18.50 per hour. We would need to interview any candidates and they would have to become members of the University's Staff Bureau, which means that payment would be monthly in arrears and is subject to tax and national insurance.

The season has just started, so it would be helpful if the appointed person could start as soon as possible. The season has a 3 to 4 week break over Christmas and finishes in early March. I would be very grateful if you could ask individuals to contact me as soon as possible if they think they might be interested.

Many thanks,

Hi From Sweden

Hi saw your letter in the UK newsletter and as a youth coach I have two tournaments in Sweden that I can recommend, especially now when the Swedish krona is so weak. And a third Fun tournament with a handicap system.

The tournaments on the west cost (Tre Kunga Slaget and Kal å Ada are easily reached from the UK with ether boat DFDS seaways http://www.scansea.com/ or by air (you fly in to Landvetter airport by BA or SAS) or cheaply by Ryan air http://www.ryanair.com/ to Säve. Getting to Stockholm you fly into Arlanda.

Firstly: "Tre kunga slaget"
Played in Kungälv (aprox) 30 kilometres north of Göteborg (Gothenburg) on the Swedish west coast. The tournament is played the second or third week I November during a weekend. Teams from all around Sweden (I think from Denmark and Norway to, though I'm not sure) participate.

Under 13 mixed volley 2000 (teams of 2 to 4 players)
Boys / Girls 15, 17, 19, 21. (FIVB rules)

Teams can rent a classroom in a nearby school where they sleep on air mattresses at a low cost. etc.

More information can be found on http://home.swipnet.se/kungalv_volley/ you click on the three kings (hope your Swedish is good;-) otherwise just mail and they will help you.

Secondly: "Big step"
Played in and around Solna (aprox) 20 kilometres from Stockholm center the Swedish capital. Teams from all of Sweden as well as a number of teams from Finland, Russia and the baltic states participate. More information can be found on http://www.sollentuna-vk.se/ click on big step then mail (or again learn Swedish:-)

Under 13 mixed volley 2000 (teams of 2 to 4 players)
Boys / Girls 15, 17, 19, 21. (FIVB rules)

Teams can rent a classroom in a nearby school where they sleep on air mattresses at a low cost. etc. Both these tournaments are great and I can whole hartedly recommend them!

Kal å Ada Cup (all ages can play although it is an adult tournament)
Fun tournament played in May (first or second week) with teams from all over Europe Usually there are between 100 and 200 teams playing. Played in Gothenburg go to link http://www.gvbf.o.se click on the Union Jack.

The Kal å Ada Volley cup is usually considered the last tournament before the Swedish beach season starts and there is always a huge party.
Teams can rent a classroom in a nearby school where they sleep on air mattresses at a low cost. If you come over to Gothenburg and wish to stay longer we can help you with accommodation, it wont be comfy but its a roof over your heads.

You also have the Swedish volleyball federation (SVBF) whom I think would be glad to have teams over to match play with the volleyball university and defacto the Swedish national junior teams. There home page is http://www.alleberg.falkoping.se/volley/

We have a bunch of girls in the 15 to 17 age bracket and we would be interested in coming over to the UK in the future and playing over there. Perhaps some sort of exchange?? Anyway have to get to work now you can ether reach me at this address or at tord_inghammar@hotmail.com .

Yours sincerely

All Ireland Premier 32 Update

The Belfast ladies beat last year's League runners up Artane by a comprehensive 3-0 at Methodist College Belfast in their opening match of the League. The Men, having won the NIVA Cup last weekend, with guest QUB star Alan Wright, the young new look All Ireland challengers used their full squad under veteran Coach Geoff Hill to continue their winning ways with an important win over Aer Lingus in a bright start to the new season at the Northside Dublin club tournament. The former southern League and cup double winners are an important first scalp for the Belfast Team Asics. Things got better, yesterday (Sunday 7/10) when the tall Ulstermen bet East Coast Cruisers (Wicklow) 3-0 in their opener of Premier 32 League at Methody.

However in the Northside tournament, defeats against current All Ireland champions Dublin City University and the cosmopolitan Trinity College outfit were hard fought and showed great promise. The final match came in the Plate competition against former Irish Division 2 winners Microsoft Dublin and the experienced southerners took the honours 2-1. Nonetheless a bright start for the Belfast team which combines last year's Lisburn with Belfast City All Ireland league players and confirmed by yesterday's sound victories at Methody.

Premier 32 newcomers Craigavon Aztecs of Armagh had the hardest draw - Dublin City University the current All Ireland league champions and Northside winners. In Dublin, the Armaghmen went down 0-3 (13, 17, 18) a creditable start against the 2-times undefeated masters of the Irish volleyball courts.

NEWS ITEMS
USA Volleyball Hall of Fame

Three-time Olympic gold-medal winners Karch Kiraly and Regla Torres were inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame on Friday. Also inducted was Jean Gaertner, who was recognized for her play leading up to volleyball's inclusion as an Olympic sport in 1964.

Kiraly was voted top male player of the 20th century by the FIVB, the sport's world governing body. He won Olympic gold medals with the United States men's teams of 1984 and 1988 and a third in beach volleyball in 1996.

Torres, the FIVB's top female player of the 20th century, was recognized for leading the Cuban national team to world championships between 1992 and 2000. She won Olympic gold medals in 1992, '96 and 2000.

New Rules Confirmed - FIVB

The World Council also confirmed the news rules governing the sport up-to-and including the Athens 2004 Olympic Games; the introduction of international referees following World Tour; the introduction of an annual under-21 and under-18 Beach Volleyball World Championships; and a new ranking system with a '2002 World Tour Champion' title awarded at the last event of the season.

New Rules

The World Council confirmed that the rally point system would be adopted on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour up-to-and including the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. The rally point scoring system was introduced for a trial period on the World Tour following the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Matches will consist of a best of 3 sets. The first two sets will be first team to reach 21 points, with a 2 point lead (no cap), and a third tiebreaker-set, if required, being the first team to reach 15 points with a two point lead (no cap). In the rally point system, one point is won with every serve (regardless which team is serving) whereas with the superseded sideout system, only the serving team could win a point.

The introduction of the 8m x 16m court was discussed at length but it was decided by the Council to undertake further tests in forthcoming events before adopting the new court size. The 8m x 16m court (each side being 8m x 8m) was trialed for the first time this season and is being considered as an option to replace the 9m x 18m court in all future FIVB beach volleyball events.

Both the rally point system and the 8m x 16m court have been considered to make beach volleyball matches even more exciting and spectacular for spectators and television audiences. The court size initiative particularly is being considered to increase the length and quantity of rallies in each match.

In line with the FIVB's policy of considering the athletes' opinions and proposals, players have until the end of December, 2001 to submit proposals for possible further adjustments to the format (working within the rally point system) and smaller court. These proposals will then be considered by the FIVB Board of Administration and ratified at the 2002 World Congress.

Refereeing

The World Council confirmed that more international professional referees would be used on the 2002 World Tour to improve the quality and consistency of refereeing.

Junior World Championships

Following the overwhelming success of the first under-21 Beach Volleyball World Championships, held in Le Lavandou, France, 24-26 August 2001, which included 24-teams for both a women's and men's competition, the FIVB will introduce a under-21 and under-18 Beach Volleyball World Championships to be held every year starting in 2002. Dates and venues to be confirmed.

Rankings and Overall World Tour Champion

Starting with the first event of 2002, the World Tour will introduce a new ranking system whereby every team will start the season at zero (0) points, and progressively build their seasons ranking.

In another World Tour initiative, the team with the highest World Tour ranking points at the end of the season will be awarded the '2002 World Tour Champion' title. There will also be awards for the second and third placed teams of the season.

Volleyball Court to be Built under Soccer Pitch - AP

MILAN, Italy (AP) Crosstown rivals AC Milan and Internazionale, for once making a joint effort, are planning a self-moving lifting soccer ground for the San Siro stadium to overcome the chronic problems of the field and make room for other events.

AC Milan's deputy-president Adriano Galliani said Saturday that the two clubs were considering costs and technical requirements of the project, which would take at least five years to be completed. Huge hydraulic jacks would raise the field up to the top level of the stands, to give the grass more light and ventilation.

With the field raised and used as a cover, pop music concerts and volleyball events could be held at the site, Galliani said. The San Siro grass has been plagued by serious problems since an extra ring of seats and a cover were built for the 1990 World Cup matches, forcing to the Milan clubs to invest huge amounts for replanting and maintenance.

FIVB 2002 Provisional Calendar

Seven (7) men's events (Switzerland, Norway, Canada, Portugal, Sweden, Spain and Brazil) and six (6) women's events (Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Japan, Spain and Brazil) have already been confirmed for 2002.

Negotiations are also in progress with France and Austria (for Grand Slam events), Germany, Italy, Australia, China with also the possibility of another World Tour event in Spain.

Expectations are that the final calendar will consist of ten men's and ten women's events, each offering US$100,000 in prize money (with Grand Slam events offering US$150,000 prize money), plus a Bonus Pool to be confirmed by the FIVB once the calendar is finalised. The 2001 Bonus Pool was US$1.8 million. The 2002 calendar will be finalised in late November 2001.

Suction Cups - rsv

I remembered I saw some suction cups for sale that you can setup an outdoor net indoors. Do you know where can I get them? I remember
they are expensive? Anyone has other alternative solutions?

Joseph Look josephlook@hotmail.com

I remember seeing them indoors once as well. Comes to mind that they were a piece of equipment used by glass workers to transport glass. You may be able to outsource them that way. I suspect that you can try the usual sources as well (Volleyball One, Spike Nashbar etc.).

Les lsturt99@aol.com

You can try http://www.suctioncupsinc.com They have a variety of sizes and types although I am not sure of the strength of them. I have a friend who has some suction cups he uses on an outdoor net for indoor use... I'll see if I can find out any more info from him.

STOP THE ROT !

Secret weapon revealed together with a bit of history from a volleyball veteran still going strong at 45

When should a volleyball player hang up his kneepads.?
My name is Peter Booth. I started playing volleyball at the age of 12 at Forest Hill School in SE London. A few years later several members of the old school teams got together to form the Forest Hill Volleyball Club. which quickly rose through the London Leagues to National League Div III. Following the introduction of coach John Nash and his young lads from his school the club name was changed. This was the birth of the now infamous Malory Volleyball Club.

At Malory we won promotion to Division 1, by now I was well into my thirties and realising that the team was attracting a lot of outside interest I decided that my days of 1st Division were numbered and that my experience would be put to better use in the Division 3 second team. Within two successive years we were at the top of Division 2 but were prevented from joining our then untouchable 1st team in Division 1 by the rules of the National League.

I had been living deep in Kent for several years and although I still enjoyed the sport, I was getting tired of travelling to London to train. Travelling the country and being away at weekends was taking its toll so I left Malory and went in search of a local club. I didn't have to look far before I made links with Tonbridge Volleyball Club which I am very proud to still be a part of today.

Over the past few years Tonbridge Volleyball Club has grown to be the most successful club in Kent hosting Ladies Nat league Div 2 and Mens National league Div 3 teams, in addition to two locals teams and junior squads.

Where is all this leading, you may ask. ? OK so last year Tonbridge men had to decide whether to go National League, with several squad members over 40 our youngest members at that time being well over thirty it was a tough decision. Here I was faced with the same decision I hade been faced with 25 years ago. My vote was again to go National league, but this time not for me, I was all but finished, but for the benefit of the club and the future of the younger players that were starting to develop

Here we go again, last season we entered and won Division 4 outright. I didn't play much though. At the age off 44, I had just given up a lifetime of smoking but I felt worse instead of better. Despite regular training I had put on so much weight that I couldn't get off the floor. I was pulling muscles I never knew I had just by just trying to jump. Time to retire ? But I am not ready yet and I don't want to go out like this.

I was quite unaware when a colleague introduced me to a business opportunity quite how life changing it could be. I have been in the IT industry for over 20 years, things have been very unpredictable of late and I was keen to build a business of my own around my day job. The business opportunity was with a company called Herbalife, Health & Nutrition Products sounded interesting, a challenge and very different from anything I was used to.

I had never sold anything before, and those that know me will realise that for me to sell any product I would have to believe in it. It would have to work, and the business would have to be 100% ethically sound. So after investigating the company and its marketing plan it was time to try the products. I was very skeptical, hoping to lose a bit of weight. Lose weight I did, 1.5 stone (21 lbs) in six weeks.

I am now approaching 45 and am at the weight I was 20 years ago. I can't remember ever having felt so good or fit, not only had I lost the weight but combined with excellent nutrition, most of my 'volleyball war wounds' collected through the years of abuse seem less troublesome and my recovery times are a fraction of what they were.

By using the products I have learnt to maintain my weight, yet I still enjoy a good social life. I also use the nutritional products (all naturally derived and IOC legal) to optimise my performance during training and events.

Despite my many volleyball triumphs over the years my proudest moment to date has to be representing Kent in this years county championships, feeling great and according to my fellow team members, playing out of my skin, on court together with two of my sons aged 15 & 17 and defeating the England Junior squad to allow us to play-off for the top 4 places on the Sunday.

So what now ?. Is it time to hang up my kneepads ? No way! I am looking forward to Division 3 this season with my new lease of life and hopefully many more years to come.

The difference between a year ago and today is that I am in control. There must be many out there who feel the way I did last year and I would be pleased to help anyone with their nutrition requirements, be it, weight loss, weight gain, sports nutrition or anyone just interested in products to assist with a healthy diet.

A friendly note to our opposition this season, you will meet a 'leaner' if not 'meaner' squad as several Tonbridge members have taken advantage of the products.

Have a great season

Ankle Braces - from rsv

I used to wear cloth lace up ankle braces as extra support, believing it would help prevent possible injury. I'm a recreational (twice a week) player, and could stand to lose about 30 pounds, and since I don't get much exercise aside from volleyball, I worry I may twist something. Anyhow, I stopped wearing the braces a couple of weeks back, and have noticed my ankles feel like they're taking a beating when I play at the net.

Is it wise to wear ankle braces when you have not been injured? I'm wondering if perhaps doing so might actually promote weakening in the ankles. Also, where might I find info on a good strengthening exercise for the ankles?

Mike McGraw mike.mcgraw@sympatico.ca

IANAD, but I have heard this argument as well and it may have some merit. I no longer wear ankle braces to prevent injury because I noticed that when I wore and Active Ankle, the shock of the impact seemed to be taken more by my knee and shin.

As you state, fitness prevents injury better than braces, and ankle strengthening exercises are numerous. Stand on one foot for the entire duration of a 3 minute commecial break while watching TV. Next commercial, do the other leg. Take a martial arts class that involves kicking (and hence balancing on one leg).

Another is to hop around in a square on one leg. Another that you can do with a partner is to stand on one leg and have the partner gently try to push you over. If you're among the masses that have to buy some equipment to feel like they're getting a workout, there are wobble boards and some jump soles that have a round ball in the middle of the platform that makes your ankles work very hard to keep you balance.

Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

For the record, I badly damaged my ankle in 1996 and, because of following my doctors advice, had to have physiotherapy and was out of the game for 16 months. Once I started back I work an Active Ankle support but, like you, I found that I was having problems with my shin and my calf on the injured leg. After a while I decided to reduce my use of it and wore it only for matches, leaving it off for training. This made a very big difference almost immediately - the shin and calf pain went and my ankle started to feel stronger. Now I don't wear the support at all and everything is reasonably fine.

>As you state, fitness prevents injury better than braces,

This is true, but it an unfortunate fact of the game that there is a massive risk of landing on top of someone else's foot (or as I did, on another volleyball at an outdoor tournament!). I wasn't that unfit at the time of my injury, but my joints weren't particularly flexible. So, while improving your ankle strength is very important, you must also make sure that you perform stretching exercises to maintain and/or improve flexibility. It may be worth looking at some plyometrics stuff to see if that will help.

One of the exercises I was given by the physio was to stand on the balls of my feet on a step and gently lower and raise myself. That made quite a difference.

Hope this helps.
John McCabe info@easthantsvolleyball.org.uk

I have perpetually bad ankles had done quite a bit of exercising to help them but they still were more prone to rolling / spraining than the average
person. I had used the "air casts" ("prescribed" by one of my doctors before active ankles were around) for a number of years, but also noticed the problem you mention with shins and knees.

Several years back I ran across a bit of an unusual ankle brace called "Pro Stride" by a company caled "Action Concepts". They are essentially a
leather cup (similar to the lace up braces without the laces) with a long attached elastic / velcro strip. The elastic could be wrapped around the
foot / ankle in whatever manner desired and as tight / loose as desired depending on the amount of support needed.

I even got to the point of having it as a tighter wrap under the arch of my support instead of orthotics in my volleyball shoes. When wearing them (even in aerobics / step classes) I was much less prone to rolling / spraining my ankles, and when I did happen to roll / sprain them they seemed to be less severe. I've never seen those braces advertised anywhere except in a sports medicine magazine that I used to subscribe to for several years.

As I recall I may have been required to have a doctor "prescribe" the braces before I was actually able to purchase them at the time.

Mark Eastom meastom@freemind.net

Thanks very much for the advice.. I'll avoid the braces for now and work on some exercises instead

Press Reports

[I found this press report last week, as well as showing that Ladies volleyball is expanding in Botswana, it included a couple of unusual phrases about how the organisers look at participation and sponsorship.]

Botswana Volleyball Federation (BVF) on Tuesday launched for the third year running, Keone Mooka Mageu ladies tournament at the national stadium. The tournament sponsored by Keone Mooka Mageu, a product of the Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL) at P12 000 will be held in Francistown tomorrow and Sunday. Eighteen ladies teams are expected to take part in the competition at Mater Spei College courts and Area S BDF courts.

Speaking at the launch, Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL) Sales and Marketing Manager, Mooka Mageu and Chibuku, Dorcas Tafila said they started sponsoring the ladies tournament with only seven teams but the teams have since increased to 20. She said even though the BVF have many affiliates, only a few of the teams have ladies teams and she encouraged other teams to form ladies teams.

She applauded for the BVF for promoting the sports from grassroots level as far as primary schools. She noted that as BBL, they are working towards making the BVF achieve Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) vision of increasing women participation in sports. "I would like to urge teams not to look at the sponsorship but to participate in the games whether they get something or not. You should participate even if there is no money involved," she said.

Tafila who noted that sports is good for people's physical being encouraged everybody to participate in different sporting codes. Giving a vote of thanks, Lieutenant Colonel Tsoebebe Mokgoshwa thanked the sponsors for the amount given to the federation. He promised the sponsors that they will get their money's worth and encouraged the teams to put their best performances during the tournament. The games will be played on a round-robin basis with top teams qualifying for the finals.

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

Some of the more interesting volleyball rules from the FIVB Casebook. Did you know that......

3.6 During the official warm up preceding the start of the first set of the match between the USA and Argentina, Kantor, the setter for the Argentine Men's Team became injured and could not play. The injured player was listed on the line-up sheet as the starting server. The referee allowed the
Argentine coach to substitute. Since he was listed on the line-up sheet, must he participate in a play before being substituted?

No, the referee correctly allowed the injured player to be removed by a legal substitution. Once the line-up sheet has been submitted to the second referee or to the scorer, the only changes, except for Libero replacement, which can be made are those made through the regular substitution process. Such substitutions count toward the six substitutions allowed to the team in the set. Rule 7.3.2, 7.3.4, 7.3.5.2

3.9 At the National Championships in the USA two very strong teams where playing when the following occurred. R-2 and R-5 are very strong attackers. During a set, R-5 is substituted out and then returns to the set. Late in the set, while R-5 is at the net, R-5 is injured and must be replaced by an exceptional substitution.

As the coach sees R-5 laying on the court, apparently injured very badly, the coach signals for a substitution for R-2, such that a defensive specialist is now in the back row for R-2 and R-2 is on the bench. After it has been determined that R-5 cannot play, the coach then allows R-2 to enter the
game at the net for R-5 using an exceptional substitution. Is this a legal sequence of substitutions?

This is not legal. Between any two rallies, a coach is allowed to request for substitution only one time. Thus, if more than one substitution is requested, they must be requested at the same time. The substitutions attempted by the coach were not within the rules. Rule 8.2, 16.3.2

4.1 In the Grand Champions Cup for Men, Narita was the setter for the Japanese Volleyball team playing against the Netherlands. The Japanese serve receiver passed the Netherlands' serve very poorly and the ball passed over the net outside of the antenna.

Narita pursued the ball into the Netherlands’ free zone and hit it in the general direction of the Japanese court. Unfortunately for Narita, the ball he hit did not pass over the net, but went toward the net on the Netherlands side of the net where the Netherlands middle blocker caught the ball. The first referee whistled before the ball was caught by the Netherlands middle blocker and the signal of "ball out" was given by the referees. Is this the correct signal by the referees? At what moment does the ball become "out"?

The signal of the referee is correct, the ball is "out". The ball becomes out when it completely leaves the space above the free zone on the Netherlands' side of the net. Thus, the ball is out when it completely crosses the sideline on the Netherlands' side of the net.

The ball would also be out if it hit a Netherlands' player in the free zone so long as the Netherlands' player was not attempting to prevent the return of the ball to the Japanese side of the net. Rule 11.1.2, 11.1.2.2

THE book to improve your skills and knowledge

This book was designed for one purpose: Making you a better volleyball player. It succeeds. Any typical player will be amazed to find how many errors he's doing (most of which were taught by his admired coach), what effect they have on the play, and how easily they can be corrected. It is very concise, and can follow the player for years to come, as a reference to check and readjust the play over time. Buy this, and you probably won't need any other volleyball book :-) ).

Outstanding step by step instruction

Illustrative action photos show you the "how to" in volleyball: blocking, spiking, serving, floor defense, setting, passing. The definitive guide for coaches to explain and break down the various skills associated with championship volleyball.

Incredible

First, a disclaimer, I'm a beginning volleyball player. This book is incredible. Covers all of the basic skills, common mistakes, and systems of play. Covers offensive and defensive play for total beginning levels (i.e. can't spike or pass too well) to advanced skills. Excellent drawings of all the basic skills. Basic skills section is 170 pages long! But great for advanced players too, since advanced offense and defense sections are 150 pages long! I was pleasantly surprised by gender neutral, yet still grammatically correct language-uses he, him, and her for singular person (correct) and doesn't fall into the trap of using "them" or "they" (incorrect). Book does not cover too much about drills or conditioning, so look elsewhere for those things. I only wish I had known about this book sooner.
