RAF Coaching Vacancy

The Royal Air Force Volleyball Association Executive Committee has recognised that to take women's volleyball forward there is the requirement for an injection of new ideas. Although we have a number of level 2 coaches with a lot of playing experience we feel that a coach with top national
league experience is required. The post will be to oversea the development of current and new female players in the RAF, take charge of team matters for National League, Inter-Service and Crown Services competitions, and with the Committee develop a strategy to take volleyball forward in the RAF (female that is). There is renumeration for this challenging role. Coaches who are interested please contact the Secretary of the RAF Volleyball Association, Gary Armitage at either: gary.armitage3@btopenworld.com or flnvq@learning-forces.org.uk

Referee Development

Hi Dave, Referee development has been given a kick up the what sit. The Staffing Directorate has overhauled the staff structure, observer and assessment training has been done and we are all raring to go. But to deliver referee development we need development opportunities, i.e. tournaments. Are there any tournament organisers out there who are willing to join us? We need tournaments at all levels, EVA registered of course, from something suitable for new referees to cut their teeth on to high level tournaments to keep our top referees sharp. Please contact me on Jack@jcrossley9.freeserve.co.uk in the first instance if you have anything of interest. Developing referees should be in everybody's interest as, the better referees get, hopefully the better the game will get.

Lancing Doubles & Triples Tournament - 1st/2nd June 2002

Calling all volleyballers!

This is your invitation to enter the 2002 Lancing Doubles & Triples Tournament, being run this June Bank Holiday weekend. The Men’s and Women’s Doubles competitions are being held on Saturday 1 June, and the mixed Triples competition takes place on Sunday 2 June.

[Some of you will know that Lancing Volleyball Club has this year changed its name to Adur Volleyball Club. We have retained the old club title for the tournament this year because many people will not be familiar with the new name. Next year’s tournament will be titled “Adur Doubles & Triples”]

What sort of competition is it?

An indoor tournament, played on an 8m x 8m court (compared with 9m x 9m for 6-a-side indoor volleyball). Normal indoor rules apply with the addition of a NO TIPPING (guiding the ball with the fingertips over the net) rule, and setting over the net is allowed ONLY if in line with the body. These extra rules worked well last year.

Team entries are allocated into pools of 4-8 teams (depending on number of entries), with all teams in each pool playing each other once. Teams are then sorted into upper and lower divisions for a second set of pool matches. Top teams from each pool then play off in the finals for division winner.

We shall aim to provide at least 6 matches for each team (depending on entry numbers). Matches will be of one set duration, with rally point scoring. As usual, all teams will share the officiating for the other matches in their pool.

What standard is it suitable for?

The tournament is suitable for players of all standards. It is run so that all teams get a chance to play competitive matches. This is where the “Player Standard” part of the entry form comes in.

Timing

Men’s Doubles:               Saturday      0915 start                       1800 final (approx)
Women’s Doubles:          Saturday      1130 start (approx)          1800 final (approx)
Triples:                            Sunday        0915 start                       1800 final (approx)

Where is it?

Southwick Leisure Centre, Old Barn Way, Southwick. This is about 3½ miles west of Brighton Pier and ½ mile from the coast. Directions will be sent out with the tournament programme.

Entries

We hope you will want to enter a team for both the Doubles and Triples tournaments, though we’ll be glad to accept entries for one tournament only. Remember that triples teams must have at least one woman player.

Entry fees:            Doubles £17.00/team                Triples £25.50/team

Please make cheques payable to “Lancing Volleyball Club”

Entry submission: Please use the entry form overleaf. Submit via (i) the post, enclosing the entry fee and a 220mm x 110mm Stamped Addressed Envelope for us to send out your programme, or (ii) email to jonners@btinternet.com and we’ll email your programme. We will only be able to allocate you a place in the tournament when we have received your entry fee.

If you wish to submit multiple team entries, we will require separate Team Captain’s details for each team. The closing date for entries will be 26 April 2002. Programmes will be sent out in the third week of May. Surcharge for payment on the day of the tournament will be £5 pound per team, to cater for the hassle this causes!

Accommodation

For those that are prepared to brave it, the Leisure Centre usually allows free camping in its grounds on the Friday and Saturday nights, although local bylaws prohibit cooking.

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST
120 Beach Courts

Each August Bank Holiday for the last 4 years we have been to the Scheveningen Beach Tournament near the Hague in Holland. Our favorite tour. The resort itself is like an up market version of Brighton with a relaxed atmosphere and restaurants on the Beach.

There is also a professional league plus about 120 courts for players of all other levels.

Ex Cuban Players - rsv

What is the latest news regarding the Cuban players who deserted their team in Europe? Have they returned to Cuba, are they still in Italy??

Boost 4 Irish Schools

The first ever Junior Leagues for boys and girls start later this month. The girls will be a league format and the boys in a bi-divisional league with
finals on 23 March.

The NIVB website is being reconstructed and will be up and running soon and will contain this detail a well as the adult competitions results also.

Congratulations to Technical Commission NIVA esp. Mervyn McDowell for historic pioneering work - which is all self-financed !!

Another little piece of history in local volleyball occurred in Portadown at the weekend. The NIVA men's squad was reconstituted and Paul McIlwaine the President of the Technical Commission pointed the way forward : " A rather dusty way forward, " the Craigavon man mused. " This is the 3rd revival of the men's squad in ten years after finance deficiency rendered the earlier squads comatose.

Michael McLellan from Bangor and Belfast Rucanor will be head coach with University of Ulster and Belfast Rucanor All-Ireland leaguer Nicky Wright the funding co- ordinator and Belfast City's Ciaran McIlhone Assistant Coach. A budget is to be agreed with NIVA to underpin any programme.

There were 14 players at the trials, average age 21 years, which all agreed was a good start. A further three will attend the next session on 23 March and as Paul said, " There's no rush to get a squad out for the Commonwealth in 2005 and European 1 or 3 years after that, but we want to start properly."

Should we have a Kick Serve Option? - rsv

Hi, a controversy arose today when I unleashed my kick serve in a sand doubles volleyball game. As far as I know feet are allowed these days,
and I haven't heard anything against it being used on the serve (granted, I haven't heard of anyone else doing it either). Can anyone point me to a rule that forbids this?

thanks,
Orlando Cardoso o_cardoso@yahoo.com

A kick serve is illegal in both Indoor and Outdoor rules. The service is the act of putting the ball into play by the serving player who, positioned in the service zone, hits the ball with a hand or arm.

John Villalovos john@nwjohn.co.intel.com

I love innovation but come on now, why would you want to kick serve? Anything (angle of attack, control, spin, speed) you can do with your
foot can be done better with your hand.

Spotlight on the Plymstock Volleyball Club

http://www.plymstock.plym.sch.uk/ via school news - volleyball Club

Dear Dave, Please find a link to Plymstock Volleyball Club,yYou can get to the clubs site via the "school news" then "volleyball club" page. The club was formed in 1999 on the back of enthusiasm from the children who played in GCSE PE. With the help of many of the staff, Graham and Cheryl Pearson, Andy Skidmore, Ros Sutherland and the Plymouth and District league the club has grown rapidly entering local, South West and beach competitions.

The speed of its growth has been assisted by the generous sponsorship from Greenwater Publishing and the schools PTA providing kit, balls and training equipment. The club currently provides 4 teams in the 3 P&D divisions. Greenwater Plymstock, Plymstock Staff, Plymstock Juniors and Ladies. Over the past two seasons many junior players have represented Plymouth and Ex pupils Beckki Giddings and Holly Bryant are training with the South West Junior women's team and hope to be selected for the final squad.

The site has the current results and will show the current placing in the P&D divisions. Hope this is of some interest, many thanks for all of your efforts in maintaining the newsletter it has proved to be a valuable source of information. Any new players or people wishing to assist with coaching should contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Serving - rsv

I know that in rally point to 25 half your team will be on the serving line 3 times and half 2 times (rough estimates).
Now can someone let me know what the average was in a 15 point side out game.
How many times on average where you on the line.
If you were first server??
If you were second server?
If you were third server?
4th to 6th.??

Victor E. Lindal viclindal@shaw.ca

If, as someone suggested here, the average scoring rate on a serve is 0.4 which I believe was International level, then to reach 15 points in SOS would require 38 serves or so which probably translates as 5-6 rotations. My recollection of playing lower standard SOS games was that sets lasted 3.5 to 4.5 rotations (22-30 serves). Someone with old score sheets would be able to check.

It's worth noticing that under RPS the fewer rotation means that first three serve rotations are far more important than they used to be. In your example rotations 1-3 occur 3 times and rotations 4-6 occur twice. This would suggest that you put your strongest serve-defensive line ups on rotations 1-3. This means that if you start with your big hitter in the back court at 6 or serving you put yourself at an immediate disadvantage.

Note also that if you can win an above average number of points on your serve on first 3 rotations, there is a real possibility that you can win in
fewer than 12 rotations, so rotations 1-3 serve twice and rotations 4-6 only serve once!

We're experimenting with "loading the bases" this season by making rotations 1-3 our strongest line up because that is where all the action is - even if it means weakening rotations 4-6. Our aim is to come off the first three rotations say 8-3 to 10-3 up, side out for the next 3 rotations (11-6 to 13-6 up) then back to strong first three rotations with a lead and a bit of pressure on the opposition to take the set in the next 4-5 rotations. Doesn't always work because we miss serves and mess up, but even in bad situations you can spring surprises as the rotations go round (like a win from 11-22 down).

Note that there is an obvious starting line up here. Setter serving (so backcourt in first 3 rotations). Strongest hitter opposite the setter so that the biggest hitter plays front court in the first 3 rotations - biggest blockers next to the biggest hitter in line up so we win more of our serve on first three rotations. We call this an A-hitter system - it has a few more variations than this. When the season's finished I'll describe it in more detail.

CatSize Volleyball - rsv

I just want to speak about a new generation of Volleyball in which your tallness is not almost the only way to play in high level. Here is a project
written by Luc Favresse, player in a small team, in a region called Haute Normandie, near Paris (FRANCE) that suggests to play Volleyball in a
different way. To play in a championship where the category are made by tallness (for example the category "less than 1.75 m", "between 1.75 m &
1.85 m" and "more than 1.85 m"), and each category is associated to a height of the net...

It's called "CatSize" if you can read some French, you should visit the website he made http://volley.eure.free.fr/

Facing Away from the Net - rsv

Do you necessarily have to face the net when serving? That is, can one serve with their back to the net?
Colin Glass - volleyball_coach@email.com

Like Todd said no restriction. Serving facing backwards is something you try at social tournaments from time-to-time. The best thing about it is the
amount of top-spin you get on the ball. It's usually good for a couple of points if you get the direction right because it drops so quickly. I'd also
use it as a coach to see how the players react and adapt to unusual situations as a form of disruptive training.
Saul Dobney saul.dobney@dobney.com

Well a good question might be, and this is strictly hypothetical: When a person serves with his/her back to the net serve, do we card him/her for screening? It could be an individual screen because they usually move during the effort!
Bob  vballdancer@aol.com

If they serve with their back to the net and you can't see the contact (implying a low toss/contact point), physics dictates that it'll be a high looping serve where no one will have any difficulty seeing the ball.

The only time I've seen the back to the net routine is on the beach with some skyball servers. In that case as a player, seeing the ball due to a screen is the least of my worries.
Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

I've seen the "back to the net, ball through the legs" serve which is perfectly legal (as you would expect) as long as the ball is not still in contact with the other hand when it is played.
John McCabe info@easthantsvolleyball.org.uk

When we play social games, sometimes I will face away from the net, put the ball between my knees, bend over and hit it. Pretty high percentage actually.
Bub Don't_spam_Bub@netscape.net

EUROPEAN UPDATE
Adopt a Team

To learn more about European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in this years Women's "Top Team" competition. They are the current holders of the event and are looking to successfully defend it this year.

Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

Hello Asterix-friends

After a very cold January, we have excellent and warm weather in Belgium.

And also our Asterix girls give us a good feeling. Although we were already eliminated from the European cup tournament, the game against Odessa proved to be a turning point. Irina was ill with the flu, so Simone Lewis played her first full game. And she made an excellent performance, and her enthusiasm motivated the whole team. Since then, there is a new fire in the eyes of all the players.

Unfortunately, we have some serious injuries. Tatiana tore her Achilles tendon and is out for the rest of the season, while Olga and Maria suffer from a chronic back injury.

This seems to motivate the other girls, and they have won every game in the national competition so far. We also won the first game in the semi-final for the national cup (1-3 in Charleroi), so we are hoping for a fifth cup final.

The national television will make a special on Asterix, not just on the sports side but especially on all the other aspects of our team. It looks like we finally get some recognition in the media !

For those who are interested in our International Tournament (on 17 and 18 August 2002), I want to mention that we are getting several requests for information from all parts of the world. So it looks like we shall have an exiting weekend again, six months from now.

Ciao !

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

4.41 In a Women's World Cup match Egypt was playing the USA. The American attacker, Tara Cross-Battle, hit a very hard spike at the Egyptian blocker Toson. The ball hit Toson's hands, then hit Toson in the head, then rebounded off the back of Toson's hand into the back of the Egyptian court. The first referee allowed Egypt to dig the ball, set the ball and then attack it. Was the first referee correct in allowing these three hits by Toson followed by the three more hits of the Egyptian team?

The first referee was correct. Even though Toson had three distinct contacts of the ball, these were made during only one action to block the ball. After the block, a team is allowed three more ball contacts. Rule 10.1, 15.2, 15.4.1

5.1 A coach requested a substitution and indicated that three substitutions would be made. After the request was recognized, the coach decided to make only two substitutions. What is the process for the second referee?

This is legal so long as this does not cause a delay. Rule 16.5.2, 16.5.4, 17.1

More examples in the next issue....
