Coaching Info Required

Hi, I did my preliminary coaching award back in 1984ish, and have been coaching ever since. I am currently coaching the Royal Navy side. Do you know a site where I can get the latest coaching awards and what they entail as I know they changed to levels 1-4 a while back or so I am led to believe.

Many thanks for your time

Looking for Matches

I would be grateful if anyone could put me in touch with someone from the Perth Scottish open committee. We play in Jersey in the Channel Islands are are looking for tournaments. I know about the outdoor games but want to know the standard of play for the indoor " league of honor" . I don't know what our chances of getting in as we don't play on the mainland.

Were training again for the next Island Games in Guernsey so even tournaments in England would be useful if any clubs or counties want to organise a weekend for our men and women's teams to come across to play for a weekend.

Having played in Scotland I would say our standard is just between 1st and 2nd division ( as I remember it 4 years ago!)

Lancing Doubles & Triples Tournament - 1st/2nd June 2002

Calling all volleyballers!

This is your invitation to enter the 2002 Lancing Doubles & Triples Tournament, being run this June Bank Holiday weekend. The Men’s and Women’s Doubles competitions are being held on Saturday 1 June, and the mixed Triples competition takes place on Sunday 2 June.

[Some of you will know that Lancing Volleyball Club has this year changed its name to Adur Volleyball Club. We have retained the old club title for the tournament this year because many people will not be familiar with the new name. Next year’s tournament will be titled “Adur Doubles & Triples”]

What sort of competition is it?

An indoor tournament, played on an 8m x 8m court (compared with 9m x 9m for 6-a-side indoor volleyball). Normal indoor rules apply with the addition of a NO TIPPING (guiding the ball with the fingertips over the net) rule, and setting over the net is allowed ONLY if in line with the body. These extra rules worked well last year.

Team entries are allocated into pools of 4-8 teams (depending on number of entries), with all teams in each pool playing each other once. Teams are then sorted into upper and lower divisions for a second set of pool matches. Top teams from each pool then play off in the finals for division winner.

We shall aim to provide at least 6 matches for each team (depending on entry numbers). Matches will be of one set duration, with rally point scoring. As usual, all teams will share the officiating for the other matches in their pool.

What standard is it suitable for?

The tournament is suitable for players of all standards. It is run so that all teams get a chance to play competitive matches. This is where the “Player Standard” part of the entry form comes in.

Timing

Men’s Doubles:               Saturday      0915 start                       1800 final (approx)
Women’s Doubles:          Saturday      1130 start (approx)          1800 final (approx)
Triples:                            Sunday        0915 start                       1800 final (approx)

Where is it?

Southwick Leisure Centre, Old Barn Way, Southwick. This is about 3½ miles west of Brighton Pier and ½ mile from the coast. Directions will be sent out with the tournament programme.

Entries

We hope you will want to enter a team for both the Doubles and Triples tournaments, though we’ll be glad to accept entries for one tournament only. Remember that triples teams must have at least one woman player.

Entry fees:            Doubles £17.00/team                Triples £25.50/team

Please make cheques payable to “Lancing Volleyball Club”

Entry submission: Please use the entry form overleaf. Submit via (i) the post, enclosing the entry fee and a 220mm x 110mm Stamped Addressed Envelope for us to send out your programme, or (ii) email to jonners@btinternet.com and we’ll email your programme. We will only be able to allocate you a place in the tournament when we have received your entry fee.

If you wish to submit multiple team entries, we will require separate Team Captain’s details for each team. The closing date for entries will be 26 April 2002. Programmes will be sent out in the third week of May. Surcharge for payment on the day of the tournament will be £5 pound per team, to cater for the hassle this causes!

Accommodation

For those that are prepared to brave it, the Leisure Centre usually allows free camping in its grounds on the Friday and Saturday nights, although local bylaws prohibit cooking.

Level 3 Coaching course

Plans are well advanced to put on this rare beast through a series of four single day sessions. The hope is to use several venues that will be especially convenient to those living in East, London and South East regions. Dates are still to be confirmed but we hope to hold one in April, one in May and the other two later in the summer. Grant Aid has been applied for to enable us to subsidies travel, so all those attending will have similar costs. As a modular course it is worth considering attending any or all of these as individually. Lighter, Larger and Brighter

Wilson Sporting Goods, the world leader in volleyball technology, has reached an agreement with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) that extends its relationship through 2004 with the world's premier beach volleyball tour. Under the agreement, Wilson will continue making the Official AVP Game Ball, which will now be used in both men's and women's competition. Wilson will also have exclusive manufacturing rights for other AVP branded volleyballs.

``We've solidified our position as the number-one volleyball company,'' says Alan Davenport, Business Manager Volleyball of Wilson. ``The AVP is the world's premier volleyball tour, especially now with the men's and women's tours competing under the AVP umbrella. We're excited by the opportunity to continue working with the AVP, their new management team and Leonard Armato's vision in growing the sport of beach volleyball on both the professional and amateur levels.''

Adhering to both AVP and FIVB (Federation Internationale de Volleyball) specifications, the new Official AVP Game Ball is slightly larger and lighter than the traditional leather game ball. Designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor beach play, the ball features a new composite leather cover for superior durability and shape retention. But the biggest departure from past game balls is the incorporation of bright yellow panels, which help players and spectators alike keep their eyes on the ball.

``The AVP is proud to continue its partnership with a company like Wilson that is as dedicated to the sport of beach volleyball and its fans as we are,'' says AVP Commissioner Leonard Armato. ``This multi-year deal further exemplifies the AVP's commitment to returning beach volleyball to its position of national prominence and proving the AVP is the destination for beach volleyball at its highest level.''

Wilson's new Official AVP Game Ball is available at select sporting goods dealers nationwide. The suggested retail price is $49.99. To see the entire line of Wilson AVP volleyballs, visit Wilson's web site at www.wilsonsports.com

Mature Volleyball

Hi Dave, In a recent local league match my club Newbury Volleyball Club fielded a six with a combined age of 260 years. It made me wonder if there are any competitions or leagues for the over 40's, over 45's and over 50's. And yes, we did win!

Helping girls move 'like boys'

The best way to prevent serious knee injuries in female athletes may be to teach them to "run, jump and pivot like boys," a new study suggests. Compared to males playing the same sport and position, girls and women playing volleyball are two to eight times more likely to injure their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the major stabilizer of the knee.

Dr. Letha Griffin of the University of Georgia in Augusta and Dr. Bert Mandelbaum of the Santa Monica Orthopedic and Sports Research Foundation in California tested a special training program in female soccer players and found it cut their rate of ACL tears--commonly referred to as "blown knees"--by 88%. The findings were presented this week at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' annual meeting in Dallas.

The researchers compared knee injuries among 1,041 female soccer players enrolled in the Prevent injury and Enhance Performance (PEP) program to injuries in 1,902 players who did not enroll in the course. All of the athletes played for the Coast Soccer League of Southern California.
At the end of the season, the PEP-trained players had only two ACL tears, compared with 32 in the non-trained group, Mandelbaum reported.

The PEP program, a comprehensive training system, consists of a special 20-minute warm-up that includes special avoidance techniques, stretching, strengthening, jumping and sports-specific agilities. The program concentrates on "running, jumping and pivoting with knees bent," said Griffin, who is head physician for all sports teams at the University of Georgia.

Girls, Griffin said, do move differently than boys. Even the casual observer watching boys and girls play soccer, she added, could spot the differences. "Girls run and pivot in a stiff-legged, upright posture. Boys, on the other hand, have knees bent and play low to the ground."

In an interview with Reuters Health, Griffin said that orthopaedic surgeons have offered several different theories to explain the gender differences in ACL injuries. "Anatomy, of course, is a popular explanation," she said. "Others have theorized that hormones may play a role, but anatomy cannot be changed and hormones should not be manipulated," she said. But biomechanics, she added, "can and should be manipulated" to prevent injury.

Libero - rsv

What's the purpose of it?

The libero is a defence specialist . Following illustrates its role in field defence.

The role of the libero in the defence is slowly increasing as is shown in  following table, which summarises dig actions as extracted from the FIVB
statistics.

Event-------------------- %suc %error tdigs/set suc/.set %cont
World league 1999 --42.67 27.83 2.69 -----1.15 --17.49
World Cup 1999 -----58.46 33.29 3.33------ 1.94 --20.36
Ol. Sydney2000------ 57.18 38.00 3.65------ 2.08-- 21.19
WGCC2001 -----------59.02 31.32 3.87------ 2.28-- 23.73

Since the introduction of the libero , the contribution of the number of digs has risen from 17.49 to 23.73%. The efficiency also increased slightly
with the overall result that success actions increased from 1.15 to 2.28 per set.

Not much you can do - rsv

I had a guy serve backwards between his legs once. He also had two guys stand in front of him and then break to reveal him standing there with no
pants on and then he served it between his legs.

This was University Games and it was the last game and he hadn't got a card yet and was desperate to get one. In the end he came up to me and started smacking the ground and complaining about something silly and I used a verbal warning (I was onto his game) which disappointed him no end so he swore at me (in good fun), I red carded him (old rules) and he did a lap of honour.

I think this was the same game where the team called a time-out and then left the court to go watch another game. When I blew my whistle to get them back, the captain called his second timeout from 3 courts away. At about the end of that timeout, the team playing on that court lost the game 15-0, they did their pantsless lap of honour and my teams returned to continue playing.

There's just not much you can do as a ref in that situation :-)

World Club Championship

A Club World Championship, a project that’s been talked about for two years, will be on the Agenda of the next FIVB Executive Committee meeting which will take place in Lausanne from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March. If the Committee gives the green light to the idea, it will then be presented to the Board of Administration in April and further to the FIVB Congress, which takes place in Buenos Aires in September.

The agreement and cooperation of the National Leagues would then be necessary to launch the first tournament, which could feasibly begin in May 2003.

Competitions with a height limit

Another project, the organisation of a Volleyball competition with height limits for the players, is still in the early stages of discussion. Dr. Rubén Acosta, FIVB President, opens the debate this year after several requests of this type, in order to allow wider access to the higher levels of the sport of Volleyball.

“It’s an idea, we’re going to debate it. The creation of a second category of players won’t take anything away from current Volleyball competitions, which would in this case become open Volleyball competitions”, stated the FIVB President.

Never be afraid to measure the court! - rsv

I was officiating at the Scottish Universities Cup today, at a venue that's used both by the national team for training and one of our leading club sides for matches. During the first set of the match between Edinburgh and Glasgow, I called 'illegal back-row attack' against both sides on at least one occasion. At the end of the first set, the Glasgow captain asked if I could please measure the distance of the attack line from the centre line, as he was sure that his take-offs in zone one (he was the team's off-side hitter) were from well back in the court.

On measuring the lines, it was apparent that, not only was neither line three metres from the net, but one was four metres back and the other was
three and a half metres from the centre-line! I had the lines re-laid in the break between the sets, but after consultation with the organisers and the
captains, we agreed that the first set score would have to stand, regardless of the illegality of the playing area, due to time constraints on the event
as a whole.

The moral of the tale I think is that we referees shouldn't merely assume that the court is laid out correctly, and should, as a matter of course, be
measuring the court, as well as the net before the match, particularly in a case like this where the venue was one that none of the participants was
used to playing at.

Badger badgerstripe@blueyonder.co.uk

I had a similar experience in an outdoors tournament -- not refereeing, but playing coed 6's. We lost the first game about 15-2, then played much
better (or so we thought) in the second in losing 16-14. However when playing another match on the court later in the tournament, we realized that
the side where we only lost 16-14 was about 5 feet shorter than the other. So we didn't really improve from 15-2 to 16-14, we just got the benefit of covering only 25x30 rather than 30x30.

EUROPEAN UPDATE
Adopt a Team

To learn more about European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in this years Women's "Top Team" competition. They are the current holders of the event and are looking to successfully defend it this year.

Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

Having been knock out of this years European "Top Team" event, Asterix are now aiming to win their domestic league and cup competitions to re-qualify for next season's European competitions.

The Belgian Federation has determined that the national cup winner will participate in the TOP TEAMS CUP, while the loser will be allowed to play in the European CEV cup.
Hi Dave, attached you find two pictures of our team. Simone Lewis is missing, because she injured her ankle during warm-up and was being treated during the game, and you'll recognize Maria Bertelli in the libero shirt.

Next Sunday (Feb. 24) we play the return game of the national cup's semi final.
Just a short note to let you know that we have just won the return game in the semi finals of the Belgian cup against Charleroi (3-2 and 17-15 in the final set). So we go for the fifth time to the cup final.

Our opponents are AVO Melsele (a team from a village just 15 km from Kieldrecht) but the cup final is organized in Roeselare, some 150 km from Kieldrecht, on Easter Sunday 31 March.

Vriendelijke groeten,
Jan Jan.Bens@electrabel.com

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

5.2 During the Women's World Cup, Kojima, the coach of Japan, signaled for substitution without indicating the number of substitutions desired. Two substitutes reported to the second referee to enter the set. The second referee allowed one substitute and rejected the second as an improper request. Is the second referee correct?

The second referee was correct. Since Kojima did not indicate that more than one substitution was desired, therefore, only one was allowed. If, at the time of the request, both of the players were in the proper position for entry, Kojima, without delaying the game, had the option to decide which substitute should enter. Rule 16.5.4

5.4 During the third set of a match between Cuba and Cameroon at the World Championships, a substitution was requested by the Cuban coach. Because the player was not prepared to make the substitution, the Cuban team was sanctioned with a delay warning and the substitution was rejected.

As soon as the delay sanction was applied, the Cuban coach again requested the substitution. Is he allowed to make this substitution?

The substitution is not legal. As the first request for substitution was sanctioned, the team is not authorized to request a second consecutive substitution. At least one rally must take place before there can be another request for substitution by the same team. Rule 16.3.2
