LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Perranport Tournament?

Does anyone know if there is a beach volleyball tournament at Perranporth this year. We have entered in previous years. If so, where can I get the entry forms from?

Many thanks,

Beach Info Required

Hi Dave, I'll be arriving in the UK from Oz in a couple of weeks and I would like some information regarding the beach tournaments. I have the dates from the calendar, but I was wondering who I could contact to find out about the costs involved and if there is a qualifying process for the Grand Prix events. Do you know who I could also contact regarding finding a beach partner?

Many thanks
Cindie Ursem Cindie.Ursem@facs.gov.au

Div 2 Tournaments Required

Hi Dave, We have finished top in NVL Div3 North this season and thus will be entering Division 2 next season. We would like to attend, where
possible, indoor summer tournaments which cater for division two standard teams, so that we can get some further experience playing at Div2 level prior to the start of the season. I would be grateful if you could ask your members if they are organising any such events that we would be able to attend. Being in Leicester we are centrally based but would be willing to travel around.

Many Thanks

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Survey (ACL)

Fellow athletes, I am a final year student at University of Surrey, UK. As part of the honours degree course we undertake a research project. I am writing to enquire whether you would take part in a research study, investigating incidence of Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury (ACL) in female athletes.

It will involve you completing a set of questionnaire, which will take very little of your time to complete. Results from this study will be available to you on it’s completion should you wish to see them. For a copy of the questionnaire, please e-mail me at: Ed. E rock10vb@hotmail.com

I hope you will be able to assist me in this study and would be grateful if you could return the questionnaire by email ASAP to the above email address.

Beach Volleyball In Dublin

Hi there Dave, My name is Shannon Burkart I am currently living in Dublin, however I moved here 8 months ago from Canada. I have been heavily involved in beach volleyball as well as indoor and was wondering what my options are to play on this side of the ocean. Also who the best person would be to talk to.

It would be a lot easier if I was able to put together a team...I know. But as of right now everyone I've met barely knows there is a net involved.
I hope you can help me... I think my head will explode if I'm not able to play this summer.

thanks a million

Dawlish Warren Beach Volleyball Court

Dawlish Warren in South Devon gets its very own beach volleyball court, a joint project between the local lifesaving club and the council.

The court area, which is currently under construction, is approximately 21 x 14m and is centrally located behind the beach on the warren. Next to the picnic, grass play area and next to the beach loos, amusements, bar and food outlets.
The top layer of sand is about 15cm thick, with a separating mat and a courser sand layer and drainage below. Should be completed soon and an opening event between local business have already been organised.

The Dawlish Warren court brings the total number of purpose built beach volleyball courts in the planning or construct stage in the South and East Devon area to five.

2002 Dawlish Ladies Challenge Results:

Eleven teams traveled from all corners of the South West to take part in this years Dawlish Ladies Challenge event, including a number of new local teams. Paignton school, Space Hopperettes (Totnes) and Wonford Ladies (Exeter) were all taking part in their first ever ladies event and battled it out for the minor places.

1st Torexe (Exeter)

2nd Weymouth

3rd Kernow (Truro)

4th Bath

With extremely closes matches in the final stages, any one of the top four teams could have walked away with this years title (and supply of alcohol) but in the end Torexe A took the title, beat Weymouth 27-25 and Kernow beat Bath 29-23 for third place.

But the biggest cheer of the day came from the local Paignton school team, who achieved their best result in their very last match and apparently sang all the way home in the team mini bus.

For more photos of the event, please see the Newsletter Photos page and the full results are available on the www.volleyballnewsletter.com/dawlish.htm web page.

The 2002 Beach Volleyball World Tour

The 2002 Beach Volleyball World Tour will wind up the season with two events in Brazil the FIVB has announced after remaining organizational details were cleared with the Brazilian promoters. The men's circuit will conclude in Fortaleza (Oct 29-Nov 3) and the women also return to Brazil, a Beach Volleyball Mecca, for their last event a month later at Vitoria (Nov 26-Dec 1).

"Beach Volleyball enjoys a cult following and a strong tradition in Brazil so we are pleased to have these important events in the calendar," said FIVB Beach Volleyball Coordinator Angelo Squeo.

The season will open with a women's World Tour stop in the Spanish capital in Madrid (June 5-9) while the first men's event takes place in Berlin, Germany the following weekend. Beach Volleyballers will also entertain crowds in Montreal, Canada (July 9-13). The choice of capital city venues reflects the desire of FIVB to bring this exciting new sport to the broadest possible audience, including staging events in the heart of some of the world's major metropolises.

Other locations on this year's World Tour include picturesque mountain and lake settings in Gstaad, Switzerland and Klagenfurt, Austria, as well as a host of other classic beach locations in eight other countries in Europe, Asia and South America.

Organising a Tournament - from rsv

A coaching friend and I were recently discussing his next year's high school tournament. He mentioned that he was thinking of having a tournament with eight teams. After splitting the teams into two pools of four, he would use a round-robin format. Instead of using the more traditional cross-over method, he was thinking of having a double elimination format for the play-offs.

I'm interested in knowing if anyone has tried this format before, and if so how it worked. I'm also interested in knowing what other formats or interesting changes other coaches have used to make their tournament a success.

Thanks,
Adam Ewart akewart@sk.sympatico.ca

Sounds like a lot of work (12 games of pool play) basically just to seed 8 teams for a double-elim. I have never seen double-elimination tournaments in VB with teams of more than 2 players (which doesn't mean much :-)) -- the problem with it being that, after 2 matches, a quarter
of the participating teams is out already...

I would favour "full crossovers": you play until you have your rank. for your 8 teams, this means after pool play each one has 3 more matches,
totaling 12 (pool) + 12 (full crossover) = 24 matches. With single elim. after pool play, you have 19 matches in total.

pool play + double elim. would give you something like 27; with that number, you could start thinking about a full round-robin already (1 pool of 8, 28 games -- no finals there unless you "invent" them :-)).

greetinx
Bob fra@bwi.bepr.ethz.ch

It depends on your goal...

If it is to find out who the 1 best team is, a single elimination tournament (no pool) is the quickest way. The best team will win every game, you may have your best and second best play in the first round:-(, but at the end of the day the best team will win the finals.

If you want to know who your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best team are (with a "tie" for 5-8) a double elimination tournament will yield those results - again, no need for pool since, in the worst case, if your best 2 teams play in the first round, the loser will win their way through the losers bracket and end up back in the finals (after beating the 3rd best team in the finals of the losers bracket etc.).

If you want the best odds that the best 2 teams will end up in the finals "fresh" (without having to win their way through the losers bracket), then and only then do you need pool play - and even then it's no sure thing. If you have 2 pools of 4 you could have the best 2 teams in 1 pool (which is why you need to take teams 1 and 2 from any particular pool and split them into opposite ends of an elimination bracket before you seed on points- to insure they wont meet again until the final). An 8 team pool is the fairest way to "rank" teams going into an elimination format, but if you do go with
an 8 team pool then have a single elimination due to the number of games required.

If it is to get as many games in as possible - just play round robin until you get kicked out of the gym.

Level 3 Coaching Course

Plans are now well advanced to staging the level 3 coaching qualification through a series of four one day modules. This note serves to give the up to date position including more detailed information for the first two modules. It is hoped that this will become a rolling programme so that if you are unable to make one of the dates, you can 'catch up' the following year. There is still room on the course, so please encourage others to join us

WHAT IS IT?
Level 3 is the top coaching qualification offered by the English VA. It is designed to prepare the experienced coach to plan, organise, deliver and evaluate a programme of training sessions aimed at improving the technical and tactical performance of individual players and a team over a series of matches (season). Candidates are required to have successfully completed the level 2 coaching course and be registered with the EVA. (Tel Hayley on 0115 981 6324 for details). We will be looking into hosting an additional date to cover the necessary Sportcoach UK courses for both levels 2 and 3 if you do not already hold them. The course will be tutored by Paul Westhead.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST ME?
(Please note this section cannot be finally confirmed until end April)
Whilst the cost of venues will differ, it has been decided to set the fee for each day attended at £25. I encourage you to approach your county and regional associations to gain additional support to offset this fee. In addition there is the English Volleyball Association fee of £35 for level 3 (one off and covers all examination and course material). This later fee is payable at the outset. Essex have successfully submitted an Awards for All application to help cover the costs of the first year courses. In particular personal travel costs will be reimbursed on the day up to a max of 15p mile (as for officials).

WHEN AND WHERE?
Module 1 Sunday 26th May 2002, St Clement Dane School, Herts Module 2 Sunday 30th June 2002, St Clement Dane School, Herts Module 3 Provisionally Sunday 1st September Module 4 Provisionally a Sunday in January 2003 (International weekend) We are looking at holding one in Chelmsford, Essex and other at Ashcombe, Surrey. We will try hard to minimise English VA calendar conflicts. St Clement Dane School is in Chorleywood. Take J18 of M25 sp Chorleywood. Go through two sets of traffic lights. School is on left after 0.5 mile. You can get a detailed map by typing in post code WD3 6EW on http://uk2.multimap.com/

WHAT DO I DO NEXT?
If you have expressed an interest you will shortly receive more detailed information on the course from Paul direct. To register, please send a cheque for £60 (day 1 £25 + EVA fee £35) payable to Essex Volleyball Association by Wednesday 22nd May 2002 to Ken Edwards, 2 Vale End, Galleywood, Chelmsford, Essex CM2 8NZ, 01245-474425 ken.edwards@volleyball.co.uk or ken@edwardskg.freeserve.co.uk

Wearing Glasses - from rsv

I was in a discussion with a school sports administrator the other day and we got onto the subject of wearing glasses during games. Apparently in some sports there is a specific rule that glasses shall not be worn unless they are the safety type. He asked if there was a similar rule in volleyball. I told him that there wasn't a specific mention of glasses. I know there is mention of jewellery and there used to be a mention of wearing a cast.

Steven Burton sburt64@yahoo.com

Here in the states it's fairly common for people to wear prescription "goggles" for playing volleyball. I've seen glasses break and draw blood when hit by a ball, so the goggles are definitely a good idea.

Losing a contact lens is generally not dangerous, just inconvenient. In almost 15 years of playing volleyball in soft contacts, I have never lost a lens. I've also played for years in sand and never had a serious problem with grit in my eyes.

On the other hand, I've seen several people wearing hard contacts lose them during a game, or get sand in their eyes when playing outdoors.

These days, disposable soft contacts can be had at very reasonable prices, and may well be the best option for those who can wear them.

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

5.15 During a set, spectators ran onto the court after close plays and interrupted the match
by protesting decisions made by the officials. What is the correct response of the first referee?

The first referee should suspend the match and have the organizer or the Control Committee take steps to re-establish order. This interruption should be recorded on the scoresheet. Rule 18.2, 18.3

6.2 A team has seven players including the Libero. In the second set, the starting player number 6 is sanctioned by disqualification. The first referee declares the team incomplete and the match victory for the opponents. Is the decision of the first referee correct?

The first referee is correct since the Libero cannot participate in any substitution and the disqualified players must be substituted by a legal substitution. Since there are no players available for normal substitutions, the decision is correct. Rule 20
