THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST
Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

To learn more about European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in European events.

ASTERIX FANS ARE WINNERS!!

Asterix Kieldrecht Ladies easily overcame their local rivals AVO Melsele 3-0, in the Belgian Cup Final on Easter Sunday. The volleyball had little tension as the weaker team were hit and blocked very effectively out of the game. AVO Melsele were unexpected opponents from the Cup run having beaten the only two teams to shut out Asterix in the league. Unfortunately, our two ex-English players Simone and Maria sat out the match as they were not needed in this one-sided contest.
The true stars of the event were the fans. Kieldrecht's mostly male followers known as "Les Galliers" came to the marvellous Roeselare stadium expecting a win on their team's current good form. The red shirted enthusiasts had taken up the best position at court side outsmarting the less-experienced AVO Melsele spectators who were marooned in the balcony miles away from their luckless girls!
"Les Galliers" were in good spirits having started the day in their home town with a lunchtime meal and booze up before filling five coaches to travel to the match. They beat drums, blew trumpets and shouted on their team in front of National television. The hapless AVO fans couldn't match their bravado and were subdued by the well rehearsed mocking "block hand wave" of the Reds! The fans were very boisterous and certainly more numerous than at National League I games at City of Salford (though the sport has been better for free!!). However every aspect of the event was fascinating, friendly and good-natured.
The teams are professionals but it only cost £6 to get in. Every fan was able to buy a sponsored tee-shirt for £2 which added to the sense of belonging and solidarity. This is what we want in Britain - a professional game well supported by national known sponsors in front of a TV audience who would grow to love this great game.

They might even become as committed as the Asterix fans to having a good time following their team. Congratulations to everyone taking part and special regards to Jan Bens of the Asterix adminstration for venue and ticket information.

Yours in sport,
Peter Wilkinson pete_wilkinson@talk21.com

The National Title

It was a very emotional weekend in Kieldrecht. The national title is decided in a best-of-five formula. After the first weekend we were 1-1 with Isola Tongeren, each team having won the home game.

Saturday night, in a packed hall in Kieldrecht, we saw three excellent sets of top-level volleyball. But at the end of the third set (Asterix leading 23-22, and each team having won a set), our setter Irina Pavlova twisted her ankle badly. Our second setter (Simone Lewis) is already limping around on crutches because of a stress fracture, so we had no options. Irina was attended by the medical staff, and resumed play. She had tears in her eyes because of the pain, but we still managed to win that set. Unfortunately, this luck did not continue, and we lost the crucial home match 2-3.

The next day in Tongeren, with injections and a lot of physiotherapy, Irina could play again (although she could hardly move over the court). The team made a great game, the supporters did all they could, but the local referees were not really helping (to say the least), so we lost this final game 3-1 (26-24 and 25-23 in the last two sets, so it was quite an emotional battle).

No double this year, but we are happy with just the national cup, which is not bad at all.

The whole Asterix team is now dedicating its attention to our annual outdoor tournament on 17 and 18 August. A great opportunity for a holiday with some volleyball, some beer, several parties, many new friends to meet, and a lot of fun. All brought to you by your favorite players! Check our website http://go.to/kieldrecht , and go to the TOURNAMENT section for more information and pictures. And don't hesitate to send an email to jan.bens@electrabel.com if you have more questions.

See you in August !

EASTERN VOLLEYBALL

U15 boys play above themselves to reach 2002 finals. The Eastern Region under 15 boys squad coached by Gordon Day and Tony Pennock just got better and better in the Regional Championships in Stoke on May Bank Holiday weekend (5th-6th May 2002) finishing as runners up to South West.

The squad this year was selected from over 30 juniors who attended training sessions in Chelmsford that started in the depths of the Essex winter. Over the weeks this was reduced down to 12 of the Regions best young boys with Essex, Herts and Cambridgeshire represented in the final choice. Coach Gordon Day asked Matthew Howe from John Mansfield School to act as captain with Andrew Simons from Tendring as deputy. Both grew in their responsibilities and did not let this added role affect their game.

East knew that were in a strong group and indeed were drawn against South West in their first match. Their opponents are based heavily on the Wessex squad and coached by Lynn Allen in her last year at the Regionals. South West came out all guns blazing, and East took some time to lift their game to a level most of them have never experienced. They were improving all the time when the final whistle came at 25-15, 25-16 to South West. South West went on to top the group without losing a set.

East's second game against London was an altogether different affair. Rather than being a technically strong team, London presented a mix of unpredictable individuals. Never able to score many points themselves, their strength was to keep the ball alive through a series of amazing recoveries that had the crowd amazed and referees caught out when the ball didn't hit the ground, wall or something else. East were able to test their defensive and team strengths, and become stronger as they took the game 25-18, 25-12.

After an overnight stay at a local motel, East returned for the final pool game against West Midlands who were fielding two of the tallest players in the whole tournament, including the u17 boys! This for a place in the top group. East led by the attacking power from their captain really grew in stature in this match that they took hold off in the middle of each set. The score line of 25-18, 25-17 seemed a lot closer during the match, but it meant a semi final against North East, winner of the other group. Meanwhile South West had blasted away the other group runner up Yorkshire and were waiting in the final for the winners of the East v North East match.

North East presented yet another style of play in that they were all quite small players, very well organised and without any out and out points winners. However, well marshaled by their coach they played to their strengths and it was very difficult to put the ball away against them. It was the ability of the East squad to gain a small advantage and then build on that which saw them through as they played their best volleyball to that stage to go through 2-0 to the final. Watch out for North East next year as many of the squad are u13.

In a rematch of the first game of the tournament, East found the South West at their dominant best in the first set of the final. The South West captain, who won the overall MVP award in the age group, was unstoppable as he blasted the ball away through the middle, on one memorable occasion nearly decapitating the East's libero who was waiting under the shot. After losing the first set heavily, the watching crowd expected East to fade away, but after a strong team talk led by Tony Pennock, the boys proved they were made of sterner stuff. South West were forced to keep their best squad (the Wessex first six) on court right up to the final rallies, and made to play their best volleyball to stay with East for the early rallies and it was only at the end that they looked at all comfortable as champions. East had proved both their ability and their character to make a match of it.

The final reward for the squad was an invitation from England Cadet coach Carol Gordon for several of the squad to join the High Peaks training camp in August where the national coaches test out emerging talent for grooming through to the senior international squads. Carol said she would ideally like to be able to take the whole squad, so even those not selected this time could well find other opportunities in the future to impress the England coaches again. The coaches and management (and band of loyal parents who traveled up to support) saw these players come of age.

Squad - Matthew Howe (capt) from John Mansfield;Phil Shaw from St Clement Danes;Simon Cowing, Wayne Davies, Graham Howlett, Ricky May, George Petrakis, Stewart Tomkins, Jonathan Roberts, Andrew Simons (vide-capt), Philip Stallard, Jacob Wickens from Tendring. Coach Gordon Day, Asst coach Tony Pennock, Managers Nonie Day, Ken Edwards.

This text should simplify the process of organizing five types of team and individual sports tournaments. Types of tournaments covered include single and double elimination, multilevel, round robin, and extended events. Also contained are tips on choosing the best type of tournament.

Qualification system for the 2004 Olympic

Volleyball will be open to a total of 144 men and 144 women players (12 teams of 12 athletes per teams of both genders). Only one men's and one women's team per country is allowed to qualify. Greece, the host country, is directly granted one vacancy in each of the men's and women's Olympic Volleyball Tournaments.

The top three teams from the 2003 World Cups (men and women) will qualify for Athens 2004, with only teams that participate in the 2003 Continental Championship able to qualify for the 2003 World Cups. Continental Championships will be held from 1-30 September 2003, with World Cups for men and women, hosted by Japan, following in November 2003.

Continental Olympic Qualification tournaments, organized by each of the five FIVB Confederations, will be contested from 1 December 2003 to 15 January 2004 for another five vacancies. The winners of each tournament qualify for Athens 2004.

The remaining three vacancies, plus any non-disputes continental vacancies, will be decided through three World Olympics Qualification Tournaments organized by the FIVB.  One women's tournament will be played in Japan in the period between 17 May and 13 June 2004 and will decide three vacancies. The winners of three men's tournaments, to be played in Spain, Portugal and Japan during the week ending 23 May 2004 will also qualify.

Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball will be open to a total of 24 men's and 24 women's teams of two players (maximum two teams per country), who will be able to accumulate ranking points during nominated Olympic Qualification Tournaments held worldwide from January 1 2003, to 11 July 2004. Teams may use their best eight results from the qualification tournaments to go towards their ranking.

Greece, the host country will have one automatic team placement in both men's and women's division, and may have one more team in each gender, should they win a place through the qualification process.

Provision has been made for Wild Card entries (included in the 24 team-quota) for teams from continents unable to gain entry through the normal qualification tournaments. This will allow for the highest-ranking eligible pair from that continent to compete. Wild cards have been introduced to respect the universality principle of the Olympic Games.

Applications for entry must be made through National Federations after receiving approval from their National Olympic Committees, who must verify that teams have fulfilled the required conditions.

Beach Volleyball has been a full Olympic Sport since its introduction in 1996 at the Atlanta Games. For full information on eligibility, the qualification process and application forms go to www.fivb.org

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

7.1 In the World Cup, a disgusted Spanish player kicked the ball after a rally had ended. The first referee warned the player for minor misconduct. Is this a correct action by the first referee?

This is correct action by the referee. Such minor misconducts must be controlled by the first referee.

If, on the other hand, the kicking is dangerous to players, officials, or spectators, or is rude conduct, the first referee has the authority to judge this to be rude conduct and sanction the player with a yellow card penalty. Scorer will record the rude conduct under the player's number in the sanctions box of the score sheet. While the first referee may give a verbal warning to a player for minor misconduct or a team warning to the game captain for persistent minor misconduct of the team, the referee has the authority to go directly to issuing sanctions if an offense is of a serious nature. Rule 22.1, 22.2

7.2 Between sets of a match, Blue player #3 made a derogatory remark to an official and a rude conduct penalty was given by the first referee. The Blue team had first service for the next set. What is the proper action of the first referee?

Sanctions imposed between sets of a match are assessed prior to the start of play in the next set. Thus, before the first serve, the first referee will signal the penalty and loss of rally for the Blue team. The receiving team gains one point, rotates and serves. Rule 22.5 If there is an occasion in which there are penalties to both teams, the serving team is penalized first, then the receiving team is penalized.
