Cat'Size 2002

Sunday June 2nd, In "Cat'Size" it is the talent which wins, not your tallness !

Hi, volley ball player and friend, The registrations for the tournament of volleyball Cat' size ARE OPENED!! It is in Vernon Saint-Marcel (in Eure in 45 min of Paris). The bulletin of registration is available on http://volley.eure.free.fr until May 31. Endowment for the 2002 edition : 2500 ? (more than $ 2200, or more than £1500)

You will also find on the Web site all the informations about this 2002 edition, and a forum to give your opinion about the concept. Reminder: Cat' size is a tournament 4x4 (indoor) unique in France organized in tallness category with adapted heights of net.

Here are the heights of net associated to the categories of size:

Women:

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST
Bon Accord 4 v 4 Mixed Tournament

Saturday 11th May 2002 Harlaw Academy , Aberdeen

A sunny Saturday in May - it must be the 4 v 4 again!! For the second year running the weather was glorious and we were playing volleyball indoors!!! 18 teams of 4 arrived for an afternoon of close competition. Aberdeen University and Kinloss provided an impressive seven teams between them while the rest traveled from as far a field as Stirling, Perth, Banchory and Keith! The age range was just as great - from the young "Foo Fighters" of Aberdeen and the Mearns Academy bairns to the oldies of "JAKS".

St Machar Ladies - and a bloke!!

The first session of games threw up some surprises as the St Machar Ladies realised they were playing over a men's net and on a full court! The group results were VERY close and Steve Milne was trusted to work out the points differences of his own team (the Chancers) and two others for the places in the quarter finals. Amazingly the Chancers got through amidst cries of "fix" from disappointed (bad) losers!!
After a short break and several trips to McDonalds the second stage got underway. The semis were close with JAKS going through to play H2O in the final. Alan Middleton led his team by stunning example, humbling Division 1 players half his age in the process!

The final was yet another close game but the students of H2O had to make do with second place for the second year in a row. The "experience" of the JAKS team was superior and they won the Cup competition.

JAKS modelling their beautiful prizes.
(Suzie's new nightie!!!)

The Plate was won by Stirling and the Shield by St Machar Ladies. Unfortunately Bon Accord's financial situation meant that the "trophies" for these sections were alcoholic but we didn't hear many complaints!! The tournament carried on into the small hours after a tasty and FREE buffet at the Hog's Head pub which lined our stomachs for a few more Red Bulls (with vodka mixed in!!).

The day was a great success and thanks are due to all the helpers and the players for making it fun, as well as to Mr Milne senior who did a grand job at the results table. We hope to see everyone again next year so that we can make it a regular sporting and social event in the North East.

NEWS ITEMS
Volleyball on TV

Q. Following the screening of the EVA final's on Sky TV last weekend, I asked Simon how it was going and if he had anymore TV programs lined up for the summer...

Dave, I am always keen for feedback on the shows (good or bad) and Sky have asked for any programme feedback to be sent straight to me at my e.mail address simon.golding@virgin.net , I will collate and pass on all relevant info to them.

Sky Sports do view volleyball in a favorable light at the moment, mainly due to the standard of the shows they have received lately and the
response to them by the public. Viewing figures of around 60,000 for each show (per men and women over all showings) are still relatively good. The EVA also do a fantastic job in funding the shows, which enable a pretty good production on very limited resources. Tom Ojasoo, Jeff Allen and of late Dan Reeves have been instrumental in bringing volleyball to the Sky Sport screens. In return for the EVA's endeavor Sky offer better transmission slots and repeats than any of the other minority sports they are offered.

To keep coverage going the EVA really needs a sponsor to come on board and pick up the television costs. The EVA and myself are working hard towards this. These latest shows I was really pleased with. We made some slight changes to the production plans and I also reacted to some feedback from various people including Barbara Totterdell and Dee Wauchope, concerning more use of the end on camera. You will notice from the shows there is far more use of this camera during the rallies themselves (bit more like tennis).

There are currently no plans for any domestic beach volleyball shows, due to lack of finance at present. I will keep everyone posted on this.

I am once again working on the FIVB World beach volleyball tour as a commentator / producer. These should be airing on UK TV. I will let everyone know the schedules as soon as I have them. There is also potential for some additional coverage of World level indoor events, these may also make it to UK TV. Once again I will send out information about this as soon as I have it.

Best wishes,
Simon Golding simon.golding@virgin.net

More Volleyball on TV

Vote now for more volleyball on UK TV, just double click on Simon e-mail address simon.golding@virgin.net and send a quick note, thanking Sky TV and let them know that you just can't wait until the next program of UK and European volleyball.

Roof Cam

Q. I also asked Simon if he had considered using a Roof Cam...

The guy who came up with the roof camera idea had his arm bitten off for copies by eager coaches. Indoors it is still the favoured shot for coaching analysis. On the beach we were constantly asked by coaches for quotes to purchase all the game footage we had for their analysis. Tapes to be paid for by Associations. It's not a money spinner by any means, but useful to know the value placed on TV footage by coaches looking for an edge.

Best wishes,
Simon Golding simon.golding@virgin.net

CSSC Invitational Volleyball Tournament

4 & 5 May 2002 University of Leeds

The annual Invitational Tournament, that presents the CSSC National Volleyball squads with their representative programme was once again held at Leeds University on the May Bank Holiday weekend. This event has quickly proved popular with both CSSC players and the invited opposition.

The teams invited to the Tournament are carefully considered. We look for teams that will challenge and develop the CSSC players. Little to be gained in winning or losing easily. Players of different backgrounds and experience all add to the mix.

This year we were very pleased to invite :

Men
England Juniors final preparation before they went to European Championships
English Universities reigning Champions
Aer Lingus Irish Premier League
Warwick 3rd in NVL 1
Salford 9th in NVL 1
Cambridge Univ current EVA and British Universities Champions

Women
English Universities reigning Champions
Salford 6th NVL 2
Troon Scottish League and Cup winners
Newbridge Irish Premier League
Dulwich NVL 2 winners

In the weeks in the run up to the event CSSC were affected by the withdrawal of McGuire and Mildred through International call-ups, and Jackson, Barnikel and Powell (injuries) and Rudge, Meek (availability). Despite these hiccups a very competitive and well organised event was enjoyed by all who attended.

CSSC teams are always disadvantaged compared to clubs sides as they don't have the benefit of training and playing together each week. This, coupled with the withdrawals and six debutants being named in the squads, must have had an impact on the overall performance. A very creditable performance as evidenced in the detailed match scores, not necessarily the match outcomes.

Women

1. English Universities
2. Troon
3. Salford
4. CSSC
5. Newbridge
Men
1. English Universiites
2. England Juniors
3. Warwick

South West Junior Grand Prix

Dear all, Here are the results of the South West Junior Grand Prix after event 4. Thank you to all who have helped over the years in making it happen on court on the day. My special thanks to Ron who has helped in running the 1st event for the last three seasons and in doing so much in sorting out trophies and this year taking over from Sue in getting the certificates printed.

My thanks also to Sue and Ros for helping me sort out the format in the early days and for being so supportive of the whole idea. I hope the GP will continue to run in future so all our youngsters, not just those who show real promise, continue to get a competitive format in which to play. Its been fun, hectic and at times fraught, but I hope always fun for the children. Its now time for someone else to take over.

AVP Volleyball on Internet Radio   - rsv
Listen to the AVP Hour, every Thursday starting in May, hosted by Sinjin Smith and Geeter, and featuring the top names in volleyball.

In yesterday's LA Times (May 17, 2002), a column written by Larry Stewart, he mentiones that: "Karch Kiraly and Sinjin Smith will co-host a new
weekly show, "The AVP Hour," on KMPC (1540 AM) Thursdays, 7-8 p.m., beginning next week (May 23, 2002)."

However, I listened to KMPC earlier today (Sat. May 18) and I heard a commercial for it and "Geeter" (Chris McGee) said that he and Sinjin will be hosting this new weekly show. He also said that if you don't listen you'll get sand kicked in your face! ;-) Anyway, whoever is hosting, it's good to know that the
vball community is getting high profile ambassadors of the game to get the word out about beach volleyball on the radio! Yay volleyball! I hope that we can continue this well into the future. :-)

Blind Volleyball - rsv

Hi, Question for the coaches out there. I was reading the current month's issue of Volleyball Magazine. They talk about 10 alternatives to the game of volleyball, of which one is called Blind Volleyball. I was wondering what you would think of incorporating such a game into practices. It seems like a good game to have your players communicate and to get ready for every shot, as they should when they can see what's going on the other side.

For those who don't read Volleyball Magazine, I'll quote how the magazine describes it: "Being able to look through the net to see what the other team is doing is key in the game of volleyball. Take that ability away and everything changes."

"In blind volleyball, you hang sheets over the top of the net down to the ground so players can't see the ball until it's about to come on their side. This version of the game is impossible to play with just two players, and even with six it's quite a challenge." "A few hints: players in the back row actually have the best view and need to tell blockers and passers where the ball is. Jump serves are vicious, and there's almost no defense for a 'one' in the middle. Keep your hands up or wear a catcher's mask."

Colin Glass volleyball_coach@email.com

Ha ha...blind volleyball is a great drill to run for practices! We've always used it for serve receive. Six on one side of the net, the rest opposite serving at the six. To add a touch of fun and surprise, as the coach, get in there and serve a few! Your team will never know what hit 'em!

After you do this drill enough, the players develop quicker reactions and become generally better at the drill. It's a great, fun drill. I strongly suggest that you try it with your team!

Abby Gerken gerken.31@osu.edu

It sounds intriguing, but I suppose the rules would restrict contact with the sheet. I can't imagine how dangerous it might be if two players collide at the net, given they can't see what's on the other side. The strangest thing I've seen is a picture of a mural of a volleyball player in the Dominican Republic. The depiction of the net showed it going all the way to the ground. Weird.

Yu-Ping Wang y_p_w@hotmail.com

Colin, I have incorporated "blind volleyball into practice at least once a season for the last few years. The girls love it but keep finding ways to cheat. It is an effective drill. Makes them focus and talk.

World Student Games

University of Ulster Jordanstown students Nick Wright and Alan Workman are on the fringes of next year's World Student Games. But it is going to be a long hard road to Japan. "First volleyball has to get into the UK team and then we each need to raise some £15000 per head," explained Nick. "

It is a wonderful opportunity to play in Japan and represent our country but the odds are stacked against anyone from here being able to do so." Even with support from NIVA and its limited resources, it's unlikely that local sports charities, lotteries and councils will give two young talented athletes the opportunity to put Northern Ireland on a different International map because they don't know the reality of the world of sport and how much volleyball fits into the centre of that.

RULES OF THE GAME - FIVB

7.3 The Netherlands played Cuba in the Men's World Cup. During the hard fought second set, the Netherlands setter, Peter Blange, made a sensational set which fooled the Cuban blockers. The Netherlands spiker v.d. Meulen smashed the ball to the floor with great authority. As the confused Cuban blockers attempted to block v.d. Meulen, the Cuban setter, Diago, intentionally pulled down the bottom of the net to make the referee believe that v.d. Meulen had hit the net.

The second referee observed the play and whistled for the Netherlands team to win the rally. The first referee then signaled a warning to Diago. Is this the correct penalty for Diago?

The first referee was not correct. The rally should have been won by the Netherlands team because of the net contact by the Cuban player which interfered with the play. Diago then should have received a penalty, loss of rally, for the rude conduct in attempting to mislead the referees. Rule 22.2.1, 22.3

7.4 In a World League match the coach of Brazil stood up at the end of a rally and waved his arms in a manner that suggested disgust with the referee's decision. Is this allowed?

The coach should be allowed to express certain normal responses. If the response is judged to be minor misconduct, the coach should be warned by the first referee. If repeated, he should be penalized with a yellow card for rude conduct. In the case in which the infraction occurred during a rally, the penalty should be given at the end of the rally and should be given in addition to the result of the rally. In certain major world competitions,
Special Refereeing Instructions may list further sanctions. Rule 5.2.3, 22.1, 22.2, 22.3
