LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
FIVB and Olympic Beach Partner Required

Dave, Hi it's Monique Oliver in California. Thanks for all the newsletters. Just wanted to let you know what I have been up to lately.

I have just played in two AVP Events, Santa Barbara- finished 9th, and just returned from Belmar, New Jersey where we finished 7th. I played those two with Danalee Bragado. The next event is in Manhatten Beach, August 9th. These are my first AVP events in a couple of years because I was hopeful of playing FIVB again so I sat those out. ( I went to Asia with Alex Newell last August for 3 weeks)

If you hear of any strong players that want to play FIVB and possibly go to the Olympics please let me know. Possibly a very good indoor player who is very athletic and could convert to beach. Or a current beach player with potential. A strong blocker would be a plus as I am a very strong defensive player and that would be the best combination. (the money on the FIVB is pretty good)

Talk to you soon,

Monique Oliver moniqueo@hotmail.com

Guernsey Men's Coach Required

Hi Dave, I'm the chairman of The Guernsey Volleyball Association and I've been asked by the committee to find a coach for our Men's Island Squad.

We realise that we are not on the mainland and it may seem silly to advertise in your newsletter, but we wondered if there was anyone coming across to Guernsey for work in the finance industry or if anyone knew of someone over in Guernsey already, who might want to enter in volleyball on the island.

Many thanks for your help

Any Good Sponsorship Ideas out there?

Usual story, small volleyball organisation organising social volleyball and representative teams for our region - below State size. We are looking to get new members, raise funds, and attract some local business sponsorship.

Anyone out there come up with or seen any clever ideas along those lines, something maybe a little different that worked for your club?

USA Volleyball Scholarships?

I am a 17 year old, English College student who is interested in studying in the USA. I currently play volleyball for Sussex and England Junior Men under 19's.Would anyone know how I could go around getting a volleyball scholarship, to study in the states? I am also qualified by the E.V.A as a level 1 volleyball coach.

Any help on this situation would be appreciated.

Russian Volleyball Terms

Hello, I'm an American student studying Russian and recently joined an all-Russian speaking volleyball team. Does anyone out there know the Russian words for some of the simple terms - serve, long, wide, nice try, or anything else along those lines? Thanks!

And if you could email me at holly@itsmyhead.com that would be terrific since I don't get to this board too often.

Shorts question

An odd question here. Does anyone know if any company makes the board shorts like Primitive Prints used to with the dangling pieces from the legs that looked like a lampshade? We were trying to get some for prizes in our tournaments as the crazy styles of shorts have become popular once again on the outdoor scene. Any ideas as to like roducts or other unique short styles would be great.

Thanks for your time,

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST
Stavanger Norway

This weeks photos come from this weekends FIVB Beach open from Stavanger, Norway.

Americans Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs won the first women's title here in the historic port city of Stavanger on Saturday when they swooped to victory over Aussies Kerri Pottharst and Natalie Cook.

But the task was not easy and McPeak and Youngs had to fight for three tough sets (21-17, 16-21, 15-11), before exacting revenge for losing the quarterfinal match at the Swiss Open two weeks ago. "We are very happy. It is our first international win together," Youngs said after the match. The newly-formed has been performing well in the USA this season. Saturday was the first time in the past 13 FIVB Women's finals that a team from Brazil was competing for a title.

Brazilians Emanuel-Tande on Saturday for the second time won the gold medal here at World Tour Open in Stavanger. They defeated compatriots Ricardo-Loiola 2-1 (22-20, 21-18,19-17). Earlier, Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel, Switzerland, won the Bronze Medal when their match against another Brazilian formation, Pará-Harley was forfeited.

The stands in the Center Court area were again packed with 3,000 ecstatic fans, whose loud cheering and clapping echoed way beyond this dockside venue. The full house on every day of the tournament illustrated that the World Tour stop in Stavanger has become a highlight on Norway's summer sporting calendar. The World Tour continues next week in Montreal, Canada from 9-13 of July, another double gender event.

The competition featured 400 players from 37 countries, who contested 250 matches on eight courts here at this dockside venue. Some 260 volunteers supported the event and more than 80,000 spectators came to watch over the six days of the competition.
"The result lived up to our expectations," said Keith Woods of the local organizing committee, who are considering applying for the FIVB World Championships 2005. Players too enjoyed the week. www.fivb.org

NEWS ITEMS
European University Volleyball Championships

Cambridge University men, as winners of the Halifax British Universities (BUSA) Championships, are competing in the European University Championships in Athens. They face very stiff competition with the national student champions of other European countries being part of highly developed volleyball programmes.

Coach Richard White sends a report of their first encounter.

Lenny Barry LENNYBARRY@aol.com
BUSA Volleyball

Hey Lenny,

We played our first match today - eventually! Having scheduled training for 10am and a match for 6pm, the organisers told us late last night that we were actually playing at 10 this morning. Except that we and our opponents, Ukraine, arrived to find no referees and no balls. They did eventually turn up, at 12.30pm... and when we finished the game, we were told there was no running water and hence no showers (the outside temperature was around 34 degrees). The organisation of the tournament is generally pretty dire, God help the 2004 Olympics!

Ukraine, although badged as a Law Academy, are actually the main volleyball academy in the country. They fielded a whole team of professional players, including four junior internationals and two full internationals. Their setter weighed in at around 1.95m and the rest of the team were upwards of that, the tallest was 2.09m. We lost in three straight (18, 14, 14), but the Greek organisers were impressed that we had won any points at all against a team that are full professionals and the tournament favourites. Oddly enough Ukraine's superior block was not our downfall - us Cambridge boys are far too smart to hit straight into big blocks - but rather their service. All of their players were consistently able to jump serve at high velocity (judging from our video clips, easily 100+ km/h for their top server), and we lost 15 points on aces or service winners.

No-one in Britain serves that well! To give you some idea of Ukraine's strength, they are much stronger than that Russian side which played at Polonia against the English national side last summer (and whipped them).

The French and Greek sides (Montpellier, Athens) are also entirely made up of pro-league players, whilst the Netherlands team has no starter below 2m and is coached by Wim Koch (assistant coach on the 2000 Olympic team, and also a damn fine chap).

Will try to make sure someone updates you as to how we get on.

Cheers
Rich

Referee Hearing Protection - rsv

In the July edition of the Official Word (a joint publication of USA Volleyball Officials' Division and the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials), there was an excellent article highlighting Jim Olson's work on hearing safety for volleyball officials.

For those who don't officiate often in loud gyms and with pealess whistles, this may seem like a very silly thing, but from personal experience, a day of using pealess whistles in a concrete gym with 2 whistles for every play certainly adds up. Jim's work quantifies this. I just received the July edition of the Official Word in the mail, and I trust it will soon be posted to: http://www.usavolleyball.org/officiat/word.htm

In short, the message is "whistles are dangerously loud when your ears are 6 inches from the whistle, protect yourself - use earplugs, especially if you work multiple matches in a week."

To address those officials who might not care for the look of traditional earplugs, I put the following article together discussing a "best of both worlds" custom alternative to traditional plugs: http://www.vbref.org/ear/

KOB format with 12 people - rsv

My wife is running a king of the beach tourney tomorrow and can't figure out how to organize it. There's 12 people entered, but we can't figure out how to schedule the games evenly for each pool of 6. Can anyone explain how to schedule the games so everyone plays with everyone in their pool and plays the same number of games?

Every way we schedule it we end up with one team from each pool that is one game short. If there isn't a better way we'll just have them play each other.

Thanks, Jay debnjay@yahoo.com

Howdy Jay, I found this which lists a 12-person format: http://hypbus.com/vicvball/vva/vic/doubles.html

This thread also had a good deal of discussion about such a format:

$15 MILLION WORLD LEAGUE

The shakeout in the 13th Edition of the FIVB $15 Million World League continues Friday with the start of Intercontinental Round Two, the second of six consecutive weekend clashes that culminate in the final round in Brazil (August 12-18). Italy, the World League powerhouse over the last decade, had a confidence-building 2-0 away to China last weekend. Archrivals Brazil, who deprived Italy of last year's World League title, was shored up by 12,500 spectators at home last weekend, enough to demoralize Argentina 3-1 an 3-0 in the first round. Brazil now goes to Porto to play Portugal, who came away last weekend splitting the honours 1-1 with Poland.

France, flushed with confidence after defeating Olympic Champions Yugoslavia twice in Paris and Dijon, now travel east to Japan. Last weekend Greece pulled off two victories against Japan (3-0, 3-1) to take a decisive step towards making the final eight. This weekend they face Yugoslavia a tough draw in front of partisan home crowds.

Germany started well last weekend with a historic win over Netherlands, only to see their advantage slip when the visitors came back strongly in the next match. Germany has a tough draw this week away to Russia, who delivered a lesson in the sport to the young Cuban side to go up 2-0 in the first round.

Brazil, who last year swept through to the final match as the only undefeated team in the final eight, tops its pool, as does Spain, France and Russia.
In the past 12 seasons, the World League has amassed a huge following of spectators and millions of television viewers. It has distributed a staggering $76 million in prize money, with Italy taking the lion's share of $11.5 million.

Perhaps the best indication of the tournament's dynamic growth is that the purse has grown from a mere one million dollars in 1990, when the competition first started. This year the World League offers 15 of the 16 competing teams the perfect opportunity to size up their opponents ahead of the World Championship in Argentina (28 Sept - 13 Oct.). Germany is the only team that will not be in Argentina.

Beach Rules: First contact of a team - rsv

I'm past a heated discussion with my friends: In Beachvolleyball,

(1) is it allowed to play an overhead pass to the other team player at the first ball contact of a team?
(2) is it allowed to play an overhead pass to the other team player at the first ball contact of a team right after the service?

I just checked the official rules at www.fivb.ch and, to my understanding, found no rules that could be interpreted in that way. Have there ever been rules like (1) or (2) (or similar) in earlier versions of rules for Beach volleyball or Volleyball in the past 5 years?

Thanks in advance for your help, Wil Elmen we@vmars.tuwien.ac.at

If by overhead pass you mean "set" as in setting action, the answer is there is no rule prohibiting it. The rule does not allow for a double hit though as soon as the pads of the fingers are used unlike indoors and carries have always been illegal.

The not allowing of a double should virtually prohibit anyone from using this technique but the International and USAV officials have continued to loosen the ball handling rules and are therefore allowing it as far as i can tell from watching the AVP tournament last week in Belmar.

And We'll See You on the Beach, Michael Borga jsvba@aol.com

Hi Wil,

> (1) is it allowed to play an overhead pass to the other team player at the first ball contact of a team?
Yes, so long as the ball isn't double contacted. You may be able to get away with a momentary lift/carry if the ball you're playing is considered "hard-driven." Note a serve is never considered a "hard-driven attack."

> (2) is it allowed to play an overhead pass to the other team player at the first ball contact of a team right after the service?
Yes so long as the ball isn't double contacted or carried/thrown.

> I just checked the official rules at www.fivb.ch and, to my understanding, found no rules that could be interpreted in that way.
Correct. (USAV Beach rules try to be in line with FIVB rules for 2's.)

> Have there ever been rules like (1) or (2) (or similar) in earlier versions of rules for Beachvolleyball or Volleyball in the past 5 years?
Nothing written, no. Likely an oral tradition passed down through well-meaning TD's or league directors employing such rote homer rules
in hopes of eliminating arguments on judging such contacts when referees are not being used.

Sportlight on the Aer Lingus Volleyball Club - from http://www.aerlingusvolleyball.com/

CLUB PROFILE

Conor Keeling and Pat Lynch founded the Aer Lingus Volleyball Club in June 1984. Both Conor and Pat were playing volleyball with Tallaght and the National Team at that time and decided to use their expertise in starting up a club at Dublin Airport. In our first season as a club we had 1 ladies' and 1 men's team. We got our first club victory by winning the Division 3 Men's National League title.

Over the years our Club has gone from strength to strength and this year (2002), with 4 teams competing in National Leagues (2 Ladies Teams in 1st Division and 2 Men's Teams at premier Level) and a thriving Junior section, is currently one of the biggest in the country. To date the Aer Lingus Volleyball Club has won a total of 25 National Titles. Many of our Current and past members have been on the Irish Ladies or Men's National Squads. In the past we have no fewer than 18 members in the Senior, Junior & Cadet Men/Ladies Squads.

The 1997/98 season was the most successful since the foundation of the Aer Lingus Volleyball club back in 1984. We had 6 teams competing in all Divisions of National League and our teams achieved 2 first place and 4 second place in their respective divisions. This will no doubt take some beating in the future. While in the National Championship, 3 teams that reached the finals were all winners on the day. We also had 3 players Received the coveted National All-Star awards.

Our Club has competed in many tournaments abroad over the years. The furthest we traveled is to Japan and Australia in 1993 and 1995 respectively, and have participated in tournaments in the following European cities - Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Lisbon, Nice, Paris, Prague and Zurich - over the last 19 years. There has also been many great tournament weekends in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and of course the 26 counties.

With an eye on the future we have taken our next steps in development. Our first was In 2001 to form a coaching and development partnership with 4 secondary Schools in Swords, Co Dublin. This entails running an Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Competition and Coaching Courses for the interested Pupils and Staff. This competition was originally the brain child on Sean MacDonaill who ran this competition for 5 years and has championed volleyball in the Swords area for many years.

Our second initiative was to set up a Junior section for under 16 year old. This was a major step and has proved very successful. We now have a thriving under 12 year old section with two dedicated coaches. The emphasis at this level is on Fun and play. We also have a growing under 16 year old group of players both boys and girls who we hope will enter Division 3 competition in 2002-2003 season.
ALSAA Sports Complex, Cloughran, County Dublin

Thanks to the fantastic sports facilities in ALSAA we have hosted the National Championship Finals on 5 separate occasions.

We have also hosted some memorable tournaments in ALSAA over the years.

Aer Lingus VBC, in conjunction with six local Second Level Schools and Colleges are promoting the development of Volleyball within theses schools.

Phase 1 of this program has already taken place with the sponsorship of a Skills Instructor Award course for the P.E. Teachers and school nominated Transition year Students. This took place on Saturday 15th of April 2000.

Phase 2 will include visits to the schools by the ALVBC Teams and Coaches, Demonstration Games, Past Pupil V's Club match, Skills coaching for School Players from the Club Coaches.

Phase 3 will include a blitz competition between participating Schools at ALSAA. The Transition Year students and ALVBC members will run this.

Phase 4 will be the set up of a Club Team made up of the interested pupils from the participating schools. This team will be entered into National Competition and Tournaments.

Aer Lingus "Junior Wings" This is aimed at introducing Volleyball to new players. This is focused on the beginner aged 5 to 12yrs.

ASTERIX KIELDRECHT VOLLEYBALL CLUB
Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

To learn more about European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in European competitions.

European games for Asterix Kieldrecht

This morning, there was the drawing of lots in the European Cups. We are quite happy with the results.

First, we have to organize a qualification tournament for the Top Teams Cup, in the weekend of 8, 9 and 19 November 2002. Our opponents are:
Athens, Greece: we played Athens already twice, and lost both times (but with only a few points difference). And in both of those games, we had to miss Tatiana Teterina. The game is played in Belgium, so the referees and line-judges will have a clearer vision on the game than some of the home referees in the Balkan countries!

Rath Petrom Pleiesti from Romania is the second opponent. Romanian volleyball is very typical of Eastern Europe: solid, strong but usually uninspired. Our coach will no doubt be able to provide the right tactical hints so that we can defeat these ladies.

Hapoel Ironi Kyriat Ata is probably the weakest team of the four. It is the first time we meet a team from Israel. Let's hope that the situation in the Middle East will have cooled down by then, so that our police force will not have to worry about their visit to Belgium!

Asterix is excited about being able to organize this tournament. We plan on making it a formidable event, a real promotion for volleyball in Belgium.

If we win this tournament, we proceed to the league round, with the following opponents: Racing Villebon 91 Paris (France), the team against which we played our first European Cup game ever in 1994. They are definitely very strong. We also meet Branic Maribor, who was fourth at the Final Four in Vienna in 2001, so that is no easy opponent either. The last team will be the winner of an other qualification tournament with Salzburg (Austria), Durres (Albania), Odense (Denmark) and Kaleslia (Bosnia-Hercegovina).

If we are second in the November tournament, we have to play a CEV-cup tournament in December in and against Mitrovica (Yugoslavia), with also Academia Famacicao (Portugal) and Caja de Avila (Spain).

An interesting European season awaits us. If you have more information on any of these teams, please mail it to jan.bens@electrabel.com and we'll put it on the Asterix website ( http://go.to/kieldrecht ).

And don't forget that our annual outdoor tournament (with 150 teams) will take place on 16, 17 and 18 August 2002. A great event, an excellent opportunity to meet new friends, play some good volleyball, and above all, have fun ! More information on our website ( http://go.to/kieldrecht ) where you can register on-line.

See you !

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

7.7 In the Brazil versus Canada match of the World League, a player was expelled directly from the court. Neither team had been issued a warning nor a penalty at this stage of the match.

What should be the first referee's response to a subsequent minor misconduct from any other member of the same team?

The referee was correct in the first instance to send the first player off the court to the penalty area. Should a clear case of offensive conduct be committed, the referee must expel the player without a previous warning. The first referee should normally try to prevent a team from reaching the sanctioning level.

Misconduct sanctions are strictly individual sanctions, and shall not take into account previous sanctions given to other team members of the same team. Therefore, the first referee may issue warnings or penalties to other team members after the expulsion. Rule: 22

8.1 The coach of Brazil was overheard talking to and distracting the scorer during play. The second referee told the coach not to interfere with the scorer. Is this a correct action by the second referee?

Since only the first referee may officially warn or penalize a coach, player or other team member, if the second referee feels that the situation warrants a warning, the first referee must be notified and the matter must be dealt with by the first referee. Rule 24.3.2
