London Club Required

Hi Dave, I got your e-mail, while looking for a Volleyball club in the UK, and specially in London or the surroundings, where I will be working from September on. Would you be kind enough to give me some clues and tips about good clubs. I have been playing volleyball for some time now, I play in a Club in France, at a regional level, I also play on the University team and we did quite well in the French University Championship, I also played on the Galway University team during the Irish Intervarsities in 2001, when I was studying there. So now you could a good idea of my level, in order to advice me on a good club, thanks a lot!

VOLLEYBALL EVENTS
Balls to the Music! 2002 - Prince’s Trust community fundraising event

Volleyball is not often the focus of major charity events ! In Balls to the Music! the Surrey/Thames Valley based Prince’s Trust team have created an event that combines the best of live music on the main stage, top level men’s volleyball, a compelling interactive seminar programme for all, an outdoor volleyball tournament for teams of 3 and an evening party event to celebrate the successes of the day. For only £5 in advance ( adult ticket price), they hope to attract over a thousand people to come along to watch some sport and music, take part in some of the seminars and coaching sessions, bring the kids along to find out more about how they can get involved.

The event is being held on Saturday 14th September at the Spectrum in Guildford and is being supported by many businesses, including the Financial Times, T-Mobile, Panasonic, British Gas, The Comedy Store and Penguin. Fabulous prizes have been donated for the grand raffle, which was a huge success last year when one of the players in the tournament won the top prize of two flights to the US with British Airways. This year the organisers hope to double the ticket sales and raffle prizes and have invited young Prince’s Trust supported businesses to donate some of their products and services so that people can experience what they have to offer.

The seminar programme will be a popular element again this year, especially with the return of Neil Mullarkey, improvisation artist and founder member of the Comedy Store Players, who has recently been filming Austin Powers 3 with his friend Mike Myers. Neil said of the event, “It is always great when people come together to create something this energetic and positive. My workshop focuses on saying yes! And that’s the message of the Prince’s Trust to young people – ‘Yes you can!’.” Other international seminar leaders will be there to offer learning sessions on motivation, maintaining high performance and using visualisation to increase your success.

The live music will be provided by locally based young bands, most of whom have graduated from Guildford’s Academy of Contemporary Music, which was founded by Phil Brookes, who started his initial small business with the support of the Prince’s Trust. Phil’s dream was realised by his hard work, determination and steadfast belief, even when the going got very tough indeed and he recognises the key role his Prince’s Trust Mentor played in helping him to achieve this. Everyone needs someone to believe in them, to counsel them sometimes, to guide them, to be there for them and to help them to do things in their own way in order to be successful. The Prince’s Trust has over

10,000 Mentors across the UK playing vital roles in supporting young people in all sorts of ways to get them into work they can be proud of and enjoy.

The volleyball entertainment will be provided by four of the top UK men’s teams, two of them from London, plus there’s an outdoor tournament so players from the local leagues and clubs can take part and hopefully enjoy the last of the good weather to get some energetic games in before the season retreats indoors again! With the addition of children’s facilities and entertainment, this year’s Balls to the Music! Event promises to be a real corker and worth a visit to Guildford for the day.

The website is excellent so go there for more details and give some feedback - www.bttm.org

NEWS ITEMS
Beach Volleyball Bonanza at Boscombe

Boscombe on August 17th and 18th will be hosting its second beach volleyball event of the year, the Boscombe Open. Ideally suited for beach volleyball with its wide clean beach with easy access and ample parking, Boscombe is the only UK resort this year to be running more than one Beach Volleyball event.

The Grand Prix event in early June was a great success with locals Grant Pursey and Tim Hollis winning the men's title. The August event will be Grants final event on these shores before returning to his native Australia. Grant, together with Richard Cannon and Paul Curtis formed the Bournemouth Beach Volleyball Club back in 1997. The club has since run numerous events at Bournemouth and Boscombe and also provides a
hire and coaching facility to local and visiting businesses and schools.

Over the years the events have grown and local support now provides the majority of the setup. The PA, speakers and announcer are provided by The FIRE 107.6 FM who have sponsored the events since their start up in 1999. An afternoon buffet is being provided by The Neptune for players and officials, and an evening buffet and social venue is provided by Jumpin Jaks. The Bournemouth and Poole Fitness First branches provide prizes and complimentary passes to their clubs, and the Bournemouth Council provide full support from their Beach and Tourism departments. As well as local support the sport has also brought national and international companies to the area, these have included Mikasa (the ball sponsor), Parasol Suncare (Irish Sun Tan Lotion Producer), Zespri Fruit (Kiwi Fruit from NZ), HanRed Ginseng Beer, Polar Heart Monitors, Lipton Ice Tea, Page 3.com, Salon Selectives, Speedo, Acclaim Studios and not forgetting the Scooby Doo Mystery Tour.

This August event is the final 2002 Beach Volleyball event being staged in the UK and is seen as the party event of the year. The best teams in the UK will be competing as well as some international teams. Club secretary Richard Cannon has already received an entry from the Asian Tour Champions from India and is hopeful of many more top teams to put on a show piece for Beach Volleyball.

The Event will play its qualifier games on Friday evening at 6pm, and the main event comprising of 40 men's teams and 24 women's teams will be 9.30 am - 5.30 pm Saturday with the Group Stage, and 9.30 am - 5.00 pm Sunday with the Final Knockout stage.

For more details of beach volleyball visit www.beachvolleyball.org.uk or phone the Bournemouth Beach Volleyball Club on 01202 311672.

Barry Island to Host Olympic Qualifier

BARRY Island has beaten off competition from two top English resorts to host an Olympic qualification event. Next year, the Beach Volleyball Grand Prix will be classed as an Olympic qualifier and Barry Island overcame Poole and Bournemouth to be given the right to hold the event.

This weekend, the resort will stage the British Volleyball Grand Prix for the third year in a row. But the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been criticised for not sufficiently promoting the event, which is likely to be screened by Sky Sports. The criticism is part of a general feeling among some town leaders that more effort should be made to publicise major events in Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan. This, they say, would attract more visitors to the area.

The quality and depth of sand at Barry Island has made it one of the leading resorts for top volleyball competitions. Plaid Cymru county councillor Steffan William said that last year's tournament had the potential to pull in thousands of people, but that a lack of publicity by the council meant that only 500 spectators turned up. Council leader Jeff James agreed: "The council needs to be more proactive in terms of events planning.

"I have already asked our officers for a report on a future strategy for events and publicity in the Vale." He added the report would also look into how much money would be needed to promote events, and the potential for sponsorship deals and partnerships.

The volleyball tournament will be held on Whitmore Bay from 9am to 6pm tomorrow with the finals at 2pm on Sunday. Carl Harwood, the event's organiser, said: "We are very excited that this event has carried on year after year with the quality and depth of sand at Barry Island providing the perfect playing conditions."

Cambridge v Europe

The final installment of Cambridge University men's team adventure in this year's European University Championships.

Lenny Barry lenny.barry@hmce.gsi.gov.uk

Today was the final day of competition. The final round of matches were all to start at the same time, which disappointed the team as they realised they would be unable to watch the final, and the organisers' hopes that everyone would finish their games in time to travel to the closing ceremony looked far-fetched.

Nevertheless the Cambridge squad arrived at the appointed venue in time to see Israel pip Greece 3-2 to take fifth place. The fact that the hosts
finished 6th this year was a testimony to the strength of the field, since Greece had finished as runners-up in last year's tournament and still fielded a team entirely consisting of players from the Greek pro-leagues, and including one full international.

The duration of this match made it extremely unlikely that any of the teams would be able to get across Athens for the final, however Great Britain did their best as they raced to a two-set lead. Cyprus were yet another strong side, but played a very similar game to us and were therefore much less of a challenge than Israel had been the day before. Denis Zuev made some great plays in defense and in block cover, whilst Dan Escott produced a stunning reaction save as Britain dominated.

Cyprus responded very well, however, and began to bring their star player, a 6'5" middle, into the game more. He was unstoppable in the front row and hardly less so out of the back row, and started to take control as Cambridge's service pressure dropped and the Cyprus passing improved. Ken Kato and Anthony Reynolds were subbed in and John Lin also saw court time, but they could do little as the Cypriots pulled back one set and then leveled the match.

The tie-break was a thriller and brought a sizeable crowd to its feet on several occasions. Cambridge raised their game and the ensuing exchanges
were of the highest quality as both teams traded big kills and bigger stuff blocks. Great Britain took a 7-3 lead behind two blocks from Dan Roy and another from Andy Lynn, but then fell apart to allow Cyprus five points in a row before siding-out. The match then went point-for-point before Dan Escott added a stuff of his own, and with the score 14-13 to Britain it was Escott who sealed it with another huge block. 7th place was thus secured, with the team celebrating as if they had won the tournament, whilst Andy Lynn broke the University record during the match with his total of 28 points.

Although the match finished far too late for Cambridge to attend even the closing ceremony, let alone the final, the Blues' own Soren Koeppe was
there to report back. It turned out to be one of the most one-sided matches of the competition, with Ukraine thumping France 3-0 (Ukraine led 17-3 early on) to complete a double triumph, their women having won their European title earlier in the day. Cambridge were therefore the only team in the tournament to take a set off the champions, a considerable achievement.

Despite the trials and tribulations associated with organising the transport of a party of 16 to Athens for the championships, the tournament was a
great success both on and off the court. The players had the chance to play at a level most would probably never have otherwise seen, and it was a testament to them that they raised their game accordingly. Special thanks should go to Dr Jon Clarke, Cambridge women's team coach and our head of delegation, for his diplomatic skills in negotiating with the organising committee, and to Liana, Isabel, Sofia, Neryssa and all the others who flew in to support us.

Spanish Open - Cadiz

Paul and Martin Laciga took the Gold medal at the FIVB World Tour Spanish Open here at "La Victoria" beach in Cadiz Sunday afternoon. The Swiss brothers were stronger than Canadians Jody Holden-Conrad Leinemann in the spectacular final (2-0: 21-18, 21-17), enjoyed by more than 3,000 spectators. Paul Laciga was named Speedo player of the tournament.

The weekend in sunny Spain was definitely the Laciga-weekend. They won all seven matches during the event in Cadiz and only dropped one set in the entire tournament. The Swiss players, who played their 93rd FIVB Tournament together, were really looking for another FIVB World Tour victory. The last time the two time European Champions took the gold was at the Tenerife Open two years ago.

"We had a lot of chances this year," Martin Laciga said. "That made it harder to play today. We didn't want to spoil another chance. But the atmosphere was fantastic for us. We love the sand here in Cadiz and we always like to play in the wind as it was blowing here. We were fighting to get another title after two years. Now we broke the mental barrier. This will absolutely help us in the next years."

The FIVB World Tour Spanish Open here at the sunny Atlantic Ocean coast, where the temperature went up to 36 degrees on Sunday, was not the tournament of the Brazilian teams. This South American country is dominating the Beach Volleyball worldwide and a Brazilian formation won six of the eight 2002 events. Here in Cadiz, FIVB World Ranking leaders Ricardo-Loiola and number three Marcio Araujo-Benjamin didn't get through the preliminary pool play phase. Roberto Lopes-Franco were defeated by the Laciga's in the last sixteen round.

The only Brazilian team that made it to the medal stage was Emanuel-Tande, who grabbed the bronze medal. In the classification match for the third position, Emanuel-Tande defeated Marciano Baracetti-Martin Conde of Argentina in two sets (2-0: 21-17, 21-18).

For host country Spain, the event in Cadiz was not as the home crowd expected. No Spanish team made it through to the "sweet sixteen". The FIVB World Tour Spanish Open was definitely the tournament of the surprises. The silver medal of Holden-Leinemann was only one of them. For the first time since the 2001 World Tour Swiss Open in Gstaad, there was no South American team in the final. One of the other major upsets was the fifth position of the Dutch formation Sander Mulder-Richard de Kogel. There was never a team from The Netherlands that ever reached a fifth spot or higher in the past.

The FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball continues early September when the event for both men's and women's teams on the Spanish isle Mallorca is scheduled from 3 till 8 September. The stars of the future will meet at the FIVB Under-18 Junior World Championships Beach Volleyball in Xylokastro, Greece from 28 August till 1 September.

FIVB $1 Million World League

The world's elite men's Volleyball teams gathered here Monday ahead of the finals of the FIVB $1 million World League 2002, some still weary from six weeks of Intercontinental Rounds and all with expectations of a tough showdown over the next days.

Netherlands, Russia, Spain and hosts Brazil in Pool E of the Final Round, while Olympic Champions Yugoslavia, France, Italy and Poland play off in Pool F here in Belo Horizonte. Interest in the opening match is intense here, when hometown favorites Brazil meet Spain in their opening match in Recife. Spain, at No. 14, is the lowest ranked team according to the FIVB World Rankings as at July 15 2002 but Spanish coach Francisco Hervas said he is happy that his side had qualified for the finals for the first time, a sign he said that the team is improving. Raphael Pascual, the best Spanish player is not with the team. " He is a great player, but we need him in a good shape for the world championship," Rascual said.

Russia and Brazil start as favorites in their pool and Russia's assistant coach, Boris Kolcins is confident. " In the last two months, we practice every day, twice a day, so we don' t have any problems. We think we can play well and we are sure that we'll leave Brazil with a great result," he said.
The Netherlands, even with stars like Richard Schuil and Reinder Nummerdor, and Spain will be hard pressed to push past the two giants. " Our hopes are not very high for this tournament, but we are proud to be here, said Bert Goedkoop, coach of the Netherlands, who added he expected all their matches would be tough for the young team.

Brazilian color aside, it could be Pool F that is the real thriller with Italy going for their ninth League title. They face Pool winners France in their opening match but French middle blocker Dominique Daquin said he was quietly confident. "We have worked hard and we deserve to be here," he said. "I am confident we will advance."

The Poles, unbeaten in their six matches at home, come with few expectations. "Italy will be hard to beat with their great World League tradition, but for me the Yugoslavs are the favorites," said coach Waldemar Wspanialy.
Yugoslav coach Zoran Gajic is taking the opposite tack. "We are going through a tough situation. There has been a lot of traveling and a lot of the matches," he said.

The decision in this group could go down to the wire when Yugoslavia meets Italy on Thursday when their playmaker Valerio Vermiglio and Alessandro Fei face the powerful Yugoslavs like Ivan Miljkovic and teammates. Squadra Azzurri coach Andrea Anastasi, facing his personal fourth World League and with two titles to his credit, also claimed theirs was the toughest group.

What is guaranteed is action and atmosphere in this country where major tournaments have attracted as many as 26,000 spectators. The "Boys from Brazil" will find the stands packed and players like the much-adored "Giba" (Gilberto Godoy Fihlo), the 25-year-old wing spiker, will draw strength from their enthusiastic support. What remains to be seen is this it will be enough to give Brazil their third, and second consecutive World League title. Coach Bernardo Rezende is aware that his team needs to be concentrated. "It's good to play in our country, but it' s very dangerous. There is a lot of thing that can distract the players and I want them to think only about Volleyball," he said.

One killed in shooting at Gainesville volleyball game - http://www.ledger-enquirer.com

GAINESVILLE, Ga, USA - Two Gainesville men have been charged with aggravated assault after a shooting at a volleyball game left one man dead, police said. Crispen Mohica, 48, and Bertin Antunez, 28, were arrested Sunday,

Seventy-five to 100 people were at the volleyball game Sunday when a fight broke out among spectators around 9 p.m. Several shots were fired and three people were hit.

Clemente Antunez, the 42-year-old brother of Bertin Antunez, died en route to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. His brother, Bertin Antunez, was grazed with a bullet. Another man, Elevterio Nugueda, was in stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Gainesville police Sgt. Carol Martin said the shooting was the result of long-standing family feud that "started several years ago in Mexico and unfortunately came to an end in Gainesville." The assault charges could be upgraded, Martin said. The shooting is still under investigation.

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

SPECIAL CASES

9.1 In a world championship match between the women of Japan and the Soviet Union, there was a very powerful attack by a Soviet player. The defensive player of Japan was not very successful and the ball rebounded far off the court. Another Japanese player raced after the ball and made a sensational set as she fell over the advertising panels marking the edge of the free zone. Because of the extraordinary effort which drew great applause from the crowd, the player's ball contact had a little extra follow-through. The first referee blew his whistle and signaled that the ball was
caught and thrown. The crowd was quite vocal in expressing displeasure with the referee's decision.

How should the first referee control his whistle in this situation?

ANSWER:
The referee should not be considered only as a person who directs the match and mechanically applies the rules, but also as someone who has the responsibility for promotion of the sport of volleyball. Spectacular is the very core element in the promotion of volleyball. The referee should not initiate action for the pleasure of the crowd, but he also should not discourage it! He should make an appropriate balance between the technical and the social effects of his actions. Practically speaking, it is absolutely necessary, to a certain extent, to sacrifice something technically for some more
basic social effects. This is the "art" of refereeing!
