Hi Dave, I was trying to order the "Science of coaching volleyball" book, advertised on the newsletter site but I was told that it is out of print. Do you know where I can get a copy from?

Or may be suggest another one. I was looking for a book that would also go into tactics during play and not only training session routines.

Thanks in advance.

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST

The Asterix Kieldrecht International Volleyball Tournament took place last weekend for the 29th time. More than 1000 players enjoyed the fine weather, good volleyball, and some Belgian beers.

We will remember the large delegation from Scotland (and not only because they were so kind to offer the organizers a bottle of fine 10 year old malt whiskey), the old friends from Inter Millager, Newcastle or British Airways that already come for more than 10 years to Kieldrecht, and especially the Taiwanese team from Taipei. The young players impressed everybody with their sparkling and inspired volleyball. They very much deserved the spontaneous round of applause that all other participants gave them at the closing ceremony.

A complete ranking, and lots of pictures, can be found on the Asterix site: http://go.to/kieldrecht

NEWS ITEMS

Tax Relief for Clubs

Volleyball is a qualifying sport for community amateur sport club status and thereby benefit from the last budget and tax relief of player/member donations and other benefits too. Clubs can now apply to the lnland Revenue to register -they'll be sent an application pack.

www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/casc/index.htm and www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/Newsroom and speeches

Community Amateur Sports Clubs ("CASCs")

Many amateur sports clubs will be able to register as CASCs without making any changes to the way they operate or are structured. However, some clubs may find that changes are needed before they can successfully register. Before you complete the application forms you may want to see whether your club is likely to be successful in applying for registration. You can do this by answering the following four questions.

  1. Is membership of the club open to the whole community?
    (more information)
  2. Are all the club’s facilities available to members without discrimination?
    (more information)
  3. Does the club’s constitution prevent profits of the club being distributed amongst its members (i.e. any profits must go back into the club)?
    (more information)
  4. Does the club provide facilities for & encourage participation in eligible sports? (more information)

If you can answer Yes to all four questions it is likely that you will be able to register as a CASC without making any changes. In some cases you may need to make some small changes to the way the club is organised. If you cannot answer Yes to all four questions it is unlikely that the club will be able to register without making significant changes. You may wish to consider making the necessary changes before applying for registration. Further information about the benefits of registering as a CASC can be found in our guidance notes.

Summary
Without too much investigation, if your club is paying Corporation Tax (annual turnover of 10K or more), then you will have a good reason to apply for CASC status.

It may well be that in future, for example to obtain sponsorship, that you may have to be registered, so you should keep it in mind. It also requires an annual Inland Revenue submission, which may well dissuade anyone from volunteering as your club Treasurer in the future...

Civil Service Volleyball

Volleyball is widely played throughout the Civil Service, but the involvement and participation of more people - be they established players or beginners is very welcome. Volleyball is played at many levels with the confines of the Civil Service Sports Council. Membership of the Council is open to employees of nearly four hundred different organisations, covering a wide range of existing and previous core civil service work.

Apart from all the expected Whitehall departments and agencies, membership is open to the likes of BT, Consignia who used to be part of the Civil
Service in days gone by, through to the likes of Met Police civilian staff, and Sport England.

So, you never know, you may be able to join the Council and play some more volleyball!

Volleyball is played at Departmental level with the likes of Customs and Excise and MoD having their own national championships, these then feed
their own national teams who compete in the 34 team Inter Departmental Championships in September.

At a regional level anyone can turn up and play in an event in the winter with the aspiration of making it through to the national Festival in April
where a team from each of the 12 regions comes forward for two days play. Many regions also have outdoor events during the summer.

The Civil Service national sides host an invitational tournament over the May Bank Holiday in Leeds, where the best players compete at the highest
level. And our offer is completed by a Beach Championships in July.

So, if you want to play, or want to know more, or simply check out if your are eligible to join log on to www.csscvolleyball.org or email Lenny Barry  lenny.barry@hmce.gsi.gov.uk

World League 2002 Service Results

Service results from the recently played World League matches show an increasing trend towards more aces but also more errors. As remarked elsewhere this might be under the influence of the new rules in particular the touching of the net. The increase in aces appears to be relatively higher than the increase of the errors so that the ace over ace plus error ratio slightly increases.
This ratio may be considered, as a measure of efficiency and assuming that the score rate is not varying too much over the different rotations it can be directly compared to the average score rates of the teams. Comparisons with previous data are done in the table.

Old rules to 15
From the attack data average score rates are estimated to be about 0.42 for the winning teams and 0.32 for the loosing teams. The tournament ace ratio is hence clearly lower than either of these values and it would appear therefore that still too many errors are made in the service. The data are different amongst the various teams as shown in following table.

It is shown hence that good results can be obtained with low errors as for instance France or with higher errors as typical for Germany. On an individual bases about 40 % of the players reach an ace over ace plus error ratio of 0.30, which is considered as a minimum.

The others do score lower values and unless specific rotation data do indicate that this is justified it would appear that they make too much errors for the result obtained. Some typical data for players with near or over 100 services are given in next table.

The data are ranked on percentage successful. The data show that the successful servers score more than 10 % aces for a tournament average of only 5.92 %. The percentage errors are varying from 13 to 32. There are no clear reasons for this kind of difference. The higher errors can in principle be compensated by more aces but if this is not the case it will only result in lower efficiency. It is shown that the highest error percentages correspond to a lower ace ratio and that the value drops below the required minimum of 0.30.

The Young and the Old take Boscombe Open title

Number one seeds from Bournemouth, Tim Hollis and Grant Pursey narrowly lost the mens final of the Boscombe Beach Volleyball Open to the young British Hopeful Jody Gooding and his senior mentor from Poole, Vince Joyce. Vince Joyce, once the undisputed king of Beach Volleyball in this country was hoping to meet his successor Grant Pursey in the final of finals. This event was not only the last beach volleyball event of the season but it was also the last event for Grant Pursey before moving back to Perth, Australia.

Grant moved to England seven years ago and has had a massive impact on beach volleyball ever since. His skill and touches on the ball have been passed on to many players both young and old, and now the British beach volleyball events contain many home grown talented individuals. One player in particular, Jody Gooding has the build and the skill to compete on the World stage. He is soon to start a volleyball journey around the world in search of a partner and sponsorship to take them to the Athens Olympics in 2004. He may even pair up with Grant Pursey in Perth before going on to LA, the birth place of beach volleyball. Jody, already in talks with clothing giant Nike, needs not only financial help but also administrative help if his dream of an Olympic medal are to come true.

The Boscombe Open, run by the Bournemouth Beach Volleyball Club, was the first of what is hoped to be an annual event. As a mark of respect for Grant Pursey and what he has brought to the club and the country, the winners trophies had a engraved picture of Grant competing this year.

In the women's competition top seeds Olympian Audrey Cooper and professional indoor player Maria Bertelli nearly suffered an early defeat against local girls Emma Hall and Jackie Manning. After saving three match points the number one seeds were please to make it through unscathed as winners of their pool. In the other half of the draw were the spanish team of Christina Callejon and Suzanna Gomez. The Spaniards very keen to win their first event in this country, are returning to Spain this week to compete in the World Series in Majorca. In their way however, were the current Grand Prix champions Debbie Spokes from Poole and Hedda Meijer. Having already lost five times to this team this season, Christina said "This is our last chance, we must find a way to win". The semi final encounter was an epic battle that showed why the women's game in this country is also stronger than ever. Swaying one way then the other nobody could predict the outcome of this game, in the end Christina found her way to her and Suzannas first final of the year. It was not to be for Poole based Julia Stevens and Nicky Tinsley in the other semi after they lost out to Audrey and Maria.

In the women's final, the first set went narrowly to the Christina and Suzanna. This put the number one seeds on the back foot, but they responded
well taking the second set comfortable. The final set saw many good rallies before finally the team from Spain came up trumps winning their event of the year.

In the men's semi finals Grant Pursey took on his old partner Ian Fairclough and his partner, Great Britain indoor international Stuart Watson. Grant and Tim, already Grand Prix and Weymouth Classic Champions were just a bit too much class for this new partnership, they won in two sets to secure their place in the final. The other semi final was a lot closer, seeing German team Hendrik Neubert and National League Indoor player of the year Albrecht Glitz lose narrowly to the immense experience of Olympic Coach Vince Joyce and Jody Gooding.

The final stage was set, the sun was out, the crowd had stayed through the heat and enjoyed a brilliant display of beach volleyball. The first hit of the final was a big bomb from Tim Hollis, but to the delight of the opposition it just went out. This seemed to set up what was to be a final of big hitting and immense pickups. Tim and Grant did get on the end of many big hits but just did not convert enough of them to points. Tims hitting was powerful but in the end Vince and Jody's consistent serving just gave them the edge in the first set. The second set saw Tim and Grant at their best winning by a clear margin.

In the final set Tim and Grant failed to get those runs of points on their serve they are so used to. Again consistent serving and hitting, especially from Vince Joyce, enabled Jody and Vince to have four match points. Having saved two, the third was beyond them, as Grant and Tim failed to defend another massive attack.

The whole weekend was a great success, the competition was at its finest and the Bournemouth Beach Volleyball Club with the help of Bournemouth Council, The Neptune, Jumpin Jaks, Fitness First and Parasol Skin Care plan to be back next year.

240 Hour Volleyball Marathon - Malta

The first player injuries began to surface at the Kerygma volleyball marathon yesterday, after four days of play in aid of charity. Organisers said although nothing serious had been reported, two players had to sit out of the 240-hour event with a fractured arm and a sprained ankle.

“Two players may be hurt but the back-up members of the teams have taken over until they are well enough to play again. We have a great voluntary team on stand by to give physiotherapy and care for the injured players,” a Kerygma spokesman told The Malta Independent. But nothing seems to be getting in the way of the organisers’ aim to raise even more money for the Dominican Missions and the Dar tal-Providenza than last year.

“People need to keep donating money and showing their support for the players by coming here or phoning in,” said one enthusiastic volunteer. “We can beat last year’s total if everyone works together,” she added.

More than 90 hours into the marathon, the Kerygma team have been successful in raising Lm77,077 and attracting more than 20,500 people to the trade fair grounds in Naxxar. Education Minister Louis Galea visited the event yesterday and thanked the volunteers and players for the sacrifice they were making in solidarity for the two charities. He added: “Thank you for the example you are giving Malta as a whole, to help people and to work together for a common goal.

“More than the Dominican Missions and Dar tal-Providenza, the Malta society will benefit from the sacrifices of these volunteers,” the minister said.
He also delivered a personal message from Prime Minister Eddie Fenech Adami, who apologised for not being there in person and congratulated the 1,800 volunteers and 54 players for their good work.

Update
The charity volleyball marathon enters its seventh day today with everyone taking part hoping to raise more money than ever before. At 5pm yesterday, Lm98,204 had been raised after 138 hours of volleyball in the Go Mobile sponsored event. Teams of athletes, and more than 1,800 other volunteers, are playing round the clock to collect funds for Id-Dar tal-Providenza and the Dominican Mission in Albania. It is estimated that around 37,000 people have flocked to the Trade Fair Grounds in Naxxar since the marathon started, including a number of MPs and Archbishop Joseph Mercieca.

Russia Takes World League Title

Russia simply proved too powerful too often on Sunday morning here in this Brazilian city when they charged to a 3-1 victory in the finals of the FIVB $15 Million World League, shutting out the host country and last year's title holder in a Festival of Volleyball at the Mineirinho Stadium.

It was the Russian team's first ever World League title, the richest men's event in the annual FIVB calendar, and follows on from the Russian women's team winning the World Grand Prix final in Hong Kong several weeks ago. Earlier Yugoslavia won the bronze medal 3-1 (28-26, 29-27, 23-25, 25-21) depriving eight times title winners Italy of a piece of this year's World League glory.

Although Brazil were on the court with their Dream Team and were supported by some 20,500 screaming fans, it was still not enough to beat the might of the Russians who had crept back into the semifinals after a rocky performance in the round robin of the final round. The Russians also cleaned up on the individual awards, winning everything except the Best Scorer Award that went to Ivan Miljkovic of Yugoslavia with a total of 61 points. Other awards went to Pavel Abramov (Best Attacker), Alexi Koulechov (Best Blocker) and Vadim Khamouttskikh (Best Server) - all from the Russian team.

In their match, Yugoslavia's warriors put away the disappointment of their defeat by Brazil in the semis to contest one of the most closely fought matches of the tournament with each side chasing down every point.

The 2003 World League final will be hosted by Madrid, Spain.

Sports Beverages - Not Salty Enough

A 28-year-old woman who died after running the Boston Marathon this spring had drunk too much liquid, the Massachusetts medical examiner says. Cynthia Lucero died from a condition known as hyponatremic encephalopathy, in which the brain swells because sodium levels have become too low. If runners drink too many fluids, they can dangerously dilute their blood sodium levels. This confirms recent research suggesting drinking too much can be as dangerous as drinking too little.

Friends said Ms. Lucero consumed large amounts of Gatorade and looked well for most of the April 16 race. But she later began to falter, then collapsed after telling a friend she felt dehydrated and rubber-legged. She died in hospital. Dr. Doug Richards, medical director of the MacIntosh Clinic at the University of Toronto, said there is a growing body of research showing that a lack of salt in the body is as much of a problem as dehydration.

"I think the most recent research over the last few years is starting to recognize that the primary problem in most dehydration situations in athletes is actually not enough sodium, instead of not enough water." Some recent high-profile cases of athletes felled by heatstroke could be traced to the insistence by health professionals and trainers that they drink lots of fluids.

"In part, because of encouragement from the medical profession and others, athletes are told drink, drink, drink and water is just fine. So many athletes drink a whole lot of water and don't get enough salt," said Dr. Richards, who is the doctor for the Canadian beach volleyball tour.

"The fact is, when you exercise heavily in hot weather you sweat, and when you sweat, it's salty. So you need to replenish both or you get in trouble." Drinking one of the popular brands of sports drinks that advertise electrolyte replacements may not be enough for high-ranking athletes, especially those competing in long-distance races.

"Increasingly in the community of physicians that look after athletes exercising outdoors in hot weather, we're encouraging a lot of electrolyte replacement and, in fact, the sports beverages that are available are not salty enough." Now, when he treats heatstroke, Dr. Richards said he often gives salt tablets that are available in pharmacies and sports medicine clinics.

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

SPECIAL CASES

9.2 During a match between Cuba and Canada, the Cuban women played very hard and fast. The Canadian team intentionally slowed down the tempo of the game of the very emotional Cubans. How should the referee respond?

ANSWER:
"Tempo" is a very delicate element in volleyball. Every team has its optimum playing tempo. Tempo is not in the rules, but its control is one of the key factors in the performance of a good referee. A suitable tempo will allow a match to be played at a high level. On the other hand, the referee should keep the game at a constant tempo within the normal flow of the game. The referee should never allow any external influences to retard the flow of a good match and ruin the good performance of one of the teams. This is another "art" of refereeing.
