Coach Required - Stirling

Stirling Grange are looking for a coach for their women's team. They operate in the 2nd division National League. It is a small club, however the setup and training facilities are superb. They train twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Boys Brigade headquarters in Larbert. The games are held at the same venue in the time slot of 10-2 (shared with the men's team).

There is no renumeration attached to the coaching post, however support and facilities make up for this. The club is always on the lookout for players for both teams.

NEW SEASON IN IRELAND STARTS

Youth had its day on Saturday 31 August when the University of Ulster (UUJ) won their new look Men's Invitation International Volleyball Tournament at Jordanstown , north of Belfast.

Led by Nick Wright, the UUJ teams reached the final to meet the veteran All Ireland experienced Belfast Rucanor in an exciting final and thanks to superb play from Australian postgrad student Andrew Doliver, the home side - despite missing key players, came out winners 2-0. Northern Ireland men's champions last season, Queen's University Belfast, with a greatly reduced squad also, earned 3rd place beating the very promising
Republic of Ireland's Under 18 Squad 2-1.

Craigavon Aztecs and Scarbo LizArds from Newtownards shared 5th place and the new look Under 18 NIVA squads A and B learned a great deal without any match succesess over the weekend.

In the Women's event, the Republic of Ireland's well trained and traveled Under 18s proved too strong for their Northern counterparts and won both junior Internationals against NIVA "A" and "B" selections by 2-0 scorelines. NIVA Coaches Paul McIlwaine and Angela McCarthy were delighted with their young players first outing in such International and intense competition with Portadown brother/sister David and Claire Hamilton and 14 year old Chloe Walkinshaw from Tandragee in particular showing great ability and promise.

Across town, in the North South Annual Civil Service Games, the southern visitors beat NI 3-0. The visitors were extremely well marshaled by the
elganet Phyllis Farrell and her All Ireland league colleagues Audrey Burns and Alison O'Neill who were always that bit ahead of Jim Doherty's eager N.I. Civil Service team, winning 25-14, 25-15, 25-11.

2002 Women's World Championships

Italy on Sunday vaulted into the volleyball history books to become 2002 Women's World Champion for the first time ever with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the USA before a capacity crowd of 9,070 in the Max-Schmeling-Halle in the German capital Berlin.

The final was a nail-biting five set thriller where USA took first blood with a 25-18 in the opening set. The Americans took in their stride having star attacker Prikeba Phipps on the bench. Phipps caught a ball in her eye during training on Saturday and sat out the match while captain Tara Cross-Battle replaced her on the court.

Italy was quick to respond to the early American offensive, winning the second and third set comfortably. Traditional American fighting spirit then kicked in and the USA pulled back to take the fourth set and force the tiebreaker.

The two teams shadowboxed their way through the decider and were all square at 9-9. Then Elisa Togut delivered three power attacks to give Italy a three-point advantage. Togut was the finest player on the court during the final.

Again the Americans responded and got back in the match. But it was too little too late and Italy went on to take the title when a spike by Togut gave her team the title. It was their best ever result in Volleyball after placing fifth at the 1998 championship in Japan.

"This victory is a great success," Italian coach Marco Bonitta said. "We were prepared to play against USA with Phipps. When she was not on the court, we had to adjust our game. It took us one set, but then we knew what to do."

The US head Coach also played tribute to the Italian team.

"Italy is the right World Champion," the US head coach Toshiaki Yoshida said. "They deserved to win, because the team is well balanced and has good players on all positions. We kept fighting and I am proud that my team came so far," Yoshida said.

Neither team had ever made it through to a World Championship final before and neither was among the pre-tournament favorites.

It came as no surprise that Togut was named "Most Valuable Player" of the 2002 Women's World Championship and she was also best scorer with 32 points. She also closed out four of Italy's last six points. American Tayyeba Haneef was the best scorer for the USA with 21 points.

On Saturday, Russia grabbed the bronze medal after defeating China (3-1).

Earlier on Sunday Cuba and Korea played off for fifth and sixth place with the young Cuban side emerging victorious to close off what has been for this new generation of Cuban players, a creditable World Championship.

Cuban Yumilka Ruiz was overall best scorer with 217 points. Russian Elizaveta Tichtchenko was the best attacker, while US Daniella Scott was nominated as the best blocker. The 16-years old Cuban Nancy Carrilo was the tournament's best server. The Korean libero Ki-Lan Koo won two individual awards as best receiver and best digger. Brazilian Marcelle Rodriguez was the best setter of the event. The Italian libero Paula Cardulo received the Credit Suisse Fair Play Award.

The 2002 Men's World Championship will start on Saturday 28 September in Argentina, when the 24 best men's teams in the world fight for the World Title. The final of the men's event is scheduled for Sunday 13 October in Buenos Aires.

World League 2002 Libero Results

The contribution of the libero’s. In the following table receiving data are presented for the liberos and the teams without the liberos, this as an attempt to isolate the libero performance.

The libero’s take about 30.3% of all receipts. Their average contribution is slightly lower in errors and better in precision as compared to the team performance without the libero’s. The data however show a slight deterioration as compared with last years data, which are presented, in following table.

The above data appear hence the justification that some teams use their libero for improving the receiving results. The spread in performance amongst the liberos is very large and as will be shown in the next section not all teams do have either have a good libero or do not make good use of him.

Libero receiving data.
The following table shows the performance of the libero’s. The data ranked according to percentage errors. In view of the time spread between the various matches some team have taken occasion to play with more than one libero. As not all matches have been checked on this aspect some of the data may not be fully correct. It is shown now that there is a very large difference in performance. The error percentage increases from Valido Alexis from 3.13% with 70% excellence to 13.13% error and 34.36. % excellence. It will now also be clear that all the liberos with an error percentage lower than the tournament average will probably have contributed to their team performance but that the libero’s with the higher percentages are not improving their corresponding team result.

A specific remark has to be made that the tournament has not been played as a round robin competition. There were 4 different sub groups. In one of them three of the four best serve results are grouped with Germany Russia and the Netherlands. Those teams may have suffered mutually from extreme high service pressure which could explain the higher error percentage and below average performance.

Team Results.

The poor performance of the last four teams in the ranking which were all in the same pool may have been influenced by very strong service pressure.

Comparison of team and libero results.
From the data in the following table it becomes clear that the libero here has contributed positively to the team result in obtaining both lower errors and better precision. Five of those teams will participate in the final round. The % L table is indicating the percentage of receipts the libero has taken from all receipts in the team. The Polish example is indicating that a very high contribution is hence not necessarily an indicator of too high load.

On bases of preliminary results it was postulated that a decrease of libero performance could have been due to a too large participation in the receiving leading to distortions and hence lower efficiency. The Italian contribution is most probably in error, the team having used a second libero, which has escaped from the analyses.

The results for Argentine, France and Portugal are neutral. The performance of the liberos corresponds about to the team performance. China Germany and Russia score near the same results for the libero and the team, the absolute values however are very high for the errors and both libero and team results are far above the average performance. The only two teams where the libero clearly does not contribute to a better team result are Greece and the Netherlands.

In many teams the libero is the leading player in service reception. As indicated in this article as long as the libero performances are good this is a healthy principle. In similar way most teams do show a good distribution of resources, by which is meant that the best stoppers take maximum part of the receipts. Only in this way can the overall amount of errors be reduced. There are some poor examples for Cuba and Russia where the receipt leader has not lowest error percentage and where other players do score clearly lower error. Their contribution in overall receiving is to be increased to lower the overall amount of errors.

SPECIAL CASES

9.4 In a World Cup match between the women's teams of Cuba and Peru, a floor wiping towel from one of the Cuban players fell from her uniform and landed on the floor between the blockers of Peru. Play continued with the Cuban team winning the rally. What is the correct ruling in this case?

PRINCIPLE:
This is a judgment of the first referee to decide the degree of influence which the towel had on the play. Since the towel fell between active blockers of the opponents, the towel had the potential to influence the outcome of the rally and perhaps cause an injury. Therefore the rally should have been replayed. If this were intentional or a repeated occurrence, other sanctions would apply. Rule 18.2
