Video Tape Required

Hello there, Greetings from Beverly Hills California!

I have been following the World Championships in Germany and they just finished the finals last week. I was wondering if you have recorded or
taped any of the matches played by the USA Teams during the tournament? It was not broadcasted on regular cable channels, so we are trying to find other ways to obtain copies of the matches played by the USA Team. Can you help us?

Any information will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,
Robert Reguerra RReguerr@csccc.com

Regular/reverse co-rec hybrid tourney format? - rsv

Has anyone participated in a tourney that was corec for the first half of the day and reverse co-rec for the 2nd half?

If so, does anyone know the details of the tourney format and how pool play and playoffs should go?

Best Regards,
Todd Haverkos  tdh@vbref.org

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST

White Horse 4's Tournament
Wiltshire's premier outdoor volleyball tournament took place at the Leighton recreation ground on Saturday (7 September). Hosted by Westbury Wasps Volleyball Club, the White Horse 4's event provided a feast of volleyball for teams from all over the South. In only its second year the tournament, which combines the speed and excitement of the 4-man format of the game with the testing outdoor grass conditions, again proved extremely popular. Attracting more than 50 participants on a day when the weather conditions were always going to be 'challenging' is evidence of the growing stature of this event.

For the second year running the tournament attracted players which included a current England International in the Men's division through to Mixed teams, which included both male and female national league players; Ladies teams and; for the first year, a Junior section.
The beautifully tranquil setting in the foot hills of the Westbury White Horse provided a perfect battle field for the hard fought, fast paced and aggressive determination of the teams competing to walk away with the tournament titles (or was it the bottle of Champagne that all the winners received that was so fiercely contested).

The one day tournament schedule provided maximum playing time for the participants and with 'refreshments' being available all day from the Sports Centre Bar and a viewing balcony and plenty of open spaces available for supporters and families alike the organisers had left little to chance.
The volleyball itself was a closely fought affair with the prizes being taken by Sleepless Knights from Hampshire in the Mixed Division and Hit & Hope from Wiltshire in the Men's.

Following the success of the last two years the local hosts are promising a bigger and better tournament next year, I for one wont miss it !

Volleyball Shoes - VB Forum

I have a question for the girls and women who play indoor vball. What company (brand) do you think and feel is the best shoe for the indoor hardcourt game? I'm more interested in comfort and long term durability than looks. Please feel free to give as much info about your fave shoe as possible.

Thanx,
Charles Kinsman Frazier chaskfrazier@yahoo.com

ASICS volleyball shoes. They give a lot of arch and heel support, in addition to cushioning for jumping.

Michelle Kreeger kreeg@myexcel.com

I agree w/ that. I wear an ASICS cross-trainer shoe. They are very durable!

Tournament Format - Indoor Blind Draw

"Blind Draw" Tournaments are ideal for those individuals that:

Don't have a team to play on
Are new to the area
Want to meet more volleyball players
These tournaments ARE NOT for beginning level players. All players must be able to:
Bump, pass, set, and spike
These tournaments are limited to a maximum of 90 participants. The "Blind Draw" tournaments fill quickly.

Teams are formed by MIXING the three level of players onto ONE team. Your team will have players from "A," "B," and "C" levels:

"A" Level: Rated player, or you have played for 5 or more years consistently. Previously played in multiple tournaments. Familiar with running a "5-1" or "6-2" offense. Able to play any position.

"B" Level: You have played for 2 or more years consistently. Have had some level of coaching or taken volleyball classes.

"C" Level: You are able to bump, pass, set, and spike.

Replay or point  - rsv

The other night I had a team hit the ball down the line on the opposite side of the court. The L2 gave me a "didn't see" signal, I looked to my R2 and got a "shrugged shoulders" and my L1 gave me an in. I didn't see the ball land as a player was in front of me. Do I take the "in" from the L1 on a call that isn't his line? Do I assume that his "in" was due to the fact that the ball wasn't past his end line and give a replay because the neither the R1 or L2 saw the ball land? We all know that an "out" overrides an "in" when both are signalled. So what would you do?

1. Ask the opinion of the L1?
2. Replay?
3. Give the point to the attacking team because the digging team looked a little "dejected" after the play? (sell the in)
4. Go with your "gut"?

Bob vballdancer1@aol.com

Another good officials' forum style question. In fact, I think something similar has been in there before.

In that situation, if you have a gut feel on it and saw the play, 4 (taking 3 mildly into account). The 1R is encouraged to take charge in this situation. If people start harassing any line judge for not having the call, tweet the whistle to pull attention away from them, and indicate that you're making the call, and here's what it is.

I'd go replay only if no one seems to have any idea what actually happened, including me. It's unusual, but I've seen it done even at professional levels. Under no circumstance would I consult the opposite line judge in a conference.

Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

Assuming your L1 is on the same side of the court as the ball was landed then I'd take the signal from your L1 and award the point and move on.

As a side note, sometimes I do take players reaction as a secondary input but that's only when the primary input from the ref staffs, was insufficient for a decision. Most of the time when the ball landed on or close enough to the sideline/end line the defending team would almost always signal out :) The lack of such signals would suggested that the ball was clearly "in" to the defending team. I don't know if this kind of player behavior is also true elsewhere but it did give me some good indication for decision from time to time.

Men's World Championship

Buenos Aires, Argentina, Sept 28 - the 2002 Men's Volleyball World Championship Opens Saturday night in the Argentine capital when the host team plays Australia. First round Pool play begins on Sunday in six cities.

Pool A - San Juan (Argentina, Australia, China, Portugal)
Host Argentina is the favorite in Pool A of the 2002 Men's World Championship. The team will play the opening match against Australia on Saturday night in Buenos Aires, but then travel to San Juan for the rest of the matches in this preliminary phase.

The host team will have to deal with high expectations from their home crowd but Coach Carlos Getzelevich has the team's stars like Marcos Milinkovic, Javier Weber, Hugo Conte and Alejandro Spajic at his disposal. Conte will participate in his second World Championship here in Argentina, because he already was in the Argentine national team in 1982 when the home team took the bronze medal. "Of course we are under pressure because we are playing home," Getzelevich said. "But it is great to play for lots of people supporting you. I hope it will have some benefit on our results."

Australia is an unknown quantity and the team will field most of the players that participated in the 2000 Olympics. The other two teams in this group also have great opportunities to reach the next round. Portugal entered the World Championship for the first time since 1956 and can play without any pressure because being among the best 24 teams in the world is already a big achievement. China is nurturing a young team ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and they too could pull off a surprise.

Pool B - Santa Fe (Italy, Poland, Canada, Croatia)
Defending World Champion and Pool favorite Italy opens its campaign in Pool B against European neighbor Croatia. Two of Italy's key players, Allessandro Fei and Mirko Corsano, trained separately from the team, but they are confirmed for the first match on Sunday.
Poland is one of the outsiders in this group and slipped into the championship after Korea withdrew because they were not able to meet some of the qualification criteria.   Poland has proved itself to be a strong team in recent seasons and is capable of any upsets.

Canada can also play an important role. They won the qualification tournament in Winnipeg, Canada, even defeating the USA, but they will have to fight hard against tough European rivals. Croatia is the group's rookie and is making its first appearance at the final round of a World Championship. The men's squad of Croatia has now taken the limelight from their national women's team, which performed very well in the late '90's. The President of the Local Committee, Mr. Raul Araya said his city was eagerly anticipating the matches and was proud to be their host.

Pool C - Buenos Aires (Russia, France, Bulgaria, Tunisia)
Russia, recent winners of the World League, are favored to win preliminary Pool C. Russian coach Guennadi Chipouline is in Argentina with his standard successful lineup and there is no anticipated change to the starting six. But Russia faces two strong opponents in France and Bulgaria, final eight finishers at the 2001 European Championship. France has been dynamic in producing good results in recent competition and is capable of sailing through into the quarterfinal and beyond.

Bulgaria is also able to defeat any opponent if the players, most of who are in the service of strong European clubs, stay concentrated. Tunisia completes this group. The African team failed to qualify for the 2000 Olympics after losing the final qualification match against Egypt. Tunisia will be pleased to advance to the next round, but this will be tough with three top European teams in this pool.

Pool D - Mar del Plata  (Yugoslavia, Spain, Japan, Kazakhstan)
Olympic Champion Yugoslavia is here to taker their first ever World Title and are in force with their heavyweights Nikola Grbic, Ivan Miljkovic and Goran Vujovic. Spain, who reached the final eight in Japan in 1998, is their toughest opponent in this group. Japan has had their problems in recent seasons and failed to qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games. Kazakhstan is the unknown factor and is appearing in the Championship for the first time.

Pool E -  Cordoba (Brazil, USA, Venezuela, Egypt)
This group will play in the new Orfeo Superdome and Venezuela and Brazil has one clear objective - to win the event for the first time. Coach Bernardo Rezende believes his team is more powerful now than during the World League, when they lost the final to Russia at home. Giba, Nalbert and Gustavo Endres are their best weapons and veteran setter Mauricio Lima, Olympic Champion in Barcelona 1992, is in a good shape.
Venezuela returns to the World Championships after 12 years. The Cuban coach David Suarez said their goal is to advance the second round. "If we do this, it will be a good tournament for us," he stated. Their best player is Ernaldo Gomez, who could prove to be one of the most outstanding players at the tournament.
USA is one of the outsiders for a medal but under head coach Doug Beal, anything is possible for this experienced team, including the return to the squad of Libero Eric Sullivan, the best receiver at the last championship in 1998. USA won the World Title in 1986 and was Olympic Champion in 1984 and 1988.
African's best team Egypt will have a tough time in Cordoba and will be looking to improve their record at the last Championship, where they failed to win a match in the final round.

Pool F - Salta (Cuba, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Greece)
Referred to as the "Group of Death", this group should produce some exciting matches in the Delmi Stadium, where all four are capable of advancement. Cuba has achieved great results in the past, but is breaking in a new generation. Coach Eliseo Ramos has eight new players in his squad. Expectations are moderate for the team that won bronze last time round.  Czech Republic is now in the hands of Julio Velasco, one of the world's big coaches. Velasco, from Argentina, won two World titles with Italy and a string of other majors. He hopes to show his home country that his new team can make great results. "Our participation in this World Championship is one the highest achievement for my teammates and me," said player Ivo Dubs.

Greece has recently beaten Croatia, Spain and Australia in friendly matches, as well as away matches against Argentina in the World League. "This is our best experience to get ready for the Olympic Games," said Captain Marios Gkiourdas. The Netherlands are looking for a good result and Head Coach and former international Bert Goedkoop brought some young talent to the Championship. "We are looking for this Championship where we will face the best teams of the world. We want to be one of them," said captain Reinder Nummerdor.

Final Statistics from the Women's World Championships
The main statistical data from the recent world championships for women in Germany show only small differences as compared to data from the previous championships in 1998. One may observe a slight increase in attack efficiency both by higher aces and lower errors. Csuc is the to zero error corrected success figure.
Block activity in terms as blocks per set has increased and as the percentage of success blocks has improved too, these results in slightly higher overall block efficiency expressed in success per set.
Service data show marginally increased aces and higher errors with near equal efficiency as expressed by the ratio of aces over aces plus errors.
Receiving data as a result show more errors and a significant lower efficiency as expressed by the percent excellent received services. The percent excellent is the number of excellent receipts diminished by errors on total received services.

SPECIAL CASES

9.5 Player R-5 received a very strong, straight line attack directly from the opponent's spiker, S-2. The ball bounced far outside of the playing area into the spectators. R-6 jumped over the panels limiting the free zone and ran up the spectator stands to retrieve the ball. The hit was with a "doubtful" contact of the ball. The crowd was highly motivated and cheered by this spectacular play. The first referee did not whistle for either an "assisted hit" or for a "catch". Is this correct?

The first referee was correct. The ball may be retrieved from beyond the free zone as stated in Rule 10. "Assisted hits" are only penalized if they are within the playing area. Concerning the ball contact, each contact must be judged separately by the referee. The modification that is made to Rule 10.2.3.2 was made with the aim of allowing for better defense and more attractively in volleyball. Even though this was not the "first hit", it is very important to improve the "art of refereeing" to allow such spectacular plays so that volleyball will become more attractive and more popular. Rule 10.2.3.2
