LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Coaching Course Required

Hi, I am a student in Reading University, I would like to help the volleyball club doing some coaching, is there a suitable introductory course close held in Reading or somewhere nearby?
If yes when does it start?
Note that I don't have a car and I am busy at the uni during the day since I am a research student, so the course should be in the evening or week end.

Thanks a lot

Stefano Ceccarello s.ceccarello@reading.ac.uk

RAF Halton

Dave, Any chance of another plug for our club. The last mention did very well, bringing in 2 new members but we still need more. To remind you, Vale Volleyers meet every Thursday at 8p.m. at RAF Halton. Anyone interested can contact me Sara Clark on jclark@crm-broker.com

Thanks,

Sara Clark jclark@crm-broker.com

Anyone Interested in a London Beach Court

Dave, I have a fairly urgent need to discover how many people would be interested in playing beach volleyball, foot volley and couple of other sand sports in London if it were available. I have setup an email address that people can email me on .... beachsports02@yahoo.com.au

I can't say too much right now but needless to say I'm doing a truck load of research and may have something more concrete in the near future to tell you.

Hopefully hear from you all soon.

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS OF INTEREST

Ashcombe School in Dorking played host last Saturday to one of the largest indoor junior volleyball competitions in England. The new Volleyball Centre of Excellence became the stage for 19 teams from around the South East of England to prove who was the best for 2002.
The event, which was organised by Ashcombe Volleyball Club and Surrey Volleyball Association, had 3 competitions running- U18 boys and girls and U14 mixed.

The U14 division attracted teams from The American Community Schools, Lycee Francais and Ernest Bevin. The final was a closely fought contest between Ernest Bevin and ACS Blue. With 2 sets all the final set was evens until the final point when Ernest Bevin served to take the set 15-14, and with it the gold.

The U18 Boys had teams from the same schools as well as the Ashcombe home grown team. They were always favorites to win, having a number of the side training with the England Junior Squad, but the final against Lycee proved not to be such a walk over.

It could have been anyone's game when the score reached 19 each. Coach, Julie Garrard, had some well chosen words in a tactical time out that seemed to spur the team into producing accurate spiking by Sam Bussey and Chris Owen, and eventually took the set 25-19 for a home win.

The U18 Girls final provided the most evenly balanced teams with Ashcombe and ACS Cobham fighting it out for the coveted title. Ashcombe had rock solid setting from Jenny Lai and with National League spiker Diana Gassanova powering the ball down the line, the team looked all set for a double Ashcombe gold.

Cobham had other ideas though, and probably the most improved player- Emma Woollard (capt)- managed to guide her team back on course to 23-23. With a steelly glint in their eyes the Cobham crusaiders clinched the final 2 points to the dispair of a very hard working Ashcombe side.

With juniors from 11-17 showing what a dynamic and entertaining team game volleyball is, this tournament has been an utter success and everyone looks forward to the 2003 competition.

Spotlight on the Weymouth Ladies
Formation to National League in Nine Months

The club was formed in January 2002 by recruiting players from the Weymouth and Poole local Leagues. Regular training sessions we set up on a weekly basis and by April the club was ready for its first matches.

Firstly a loss away to Southampton University followed by success at the Dawlish Ladies Challenge where the team reached the final, only to narrowly lose against Torexe.

The girls were rapidly improving in standard now and a victory against SW League Wessex highlighted the potential. A match against full NVL opposition was organised and Solent brought the full squad to the resort in May.

The resultant closely fought encounter brought about a favorable letter of recommendation to the EVA. The Solent girls praising Weymouth's ability.

With the NVL struggling to find sufficient Ladies teams Weymouth were invited to join Division 3 West of the League. A strong financial drive was launched and two main sponsors, namely Newlook and Weymouth based Dorset Timber Stores ensured the funding to survive the first season in NVL.

A pre season friendly against NVL division 2 Polonia again resulted in a tight match and Sunday 29/9/2002 saw Weymouth's debut in NVL and a 3-1 victory against Whitefield in full competition keeps the rapid progress going.

The next match will be on October 13th we the club travels to NVL div 2 side Shape Mavericks of Malmesbury. This game is open to prospective new players. If you feel you are good enough to play at this level, are unattached to any other NVL team and would like to join, please contact or coach at the number shown below.

The club is expanding, and if there are any potential players who would like to train (regardless of standard) with a view to playing NVL please phone Coach Ian Loke on 01305 823556 or e-mail ian.loke@baesystems.com

The Volleyball Coaching Bible
If you are like me, looking to develop your coaching skills and to date, been disappointed in the quality of available coaching books. Then the Volleyball Coaching Bible may be the book for you. As well as covering the various volleyball skills and drills (as do most books), it gives various examples of coaching priorities, principles and responsibilities, as well as establishing and setting goals.
The section on Marketing and promoting your volleyball program, will give you a different out look on the game as a business venture but the area of the book which sets this book apart from the norm for me, is the chapter on team tactics, offence and defense systems.

The book also covers team evaluating, collecting and using static's for evaluating your teams performance and efficiency. The book is compiled with each chapter written by a difference coach (24 in all), so you also have a good cross section of views and coaching skills.

As with most available coaching books in the UK, it's written for the North American market and hence some of the chapters have not been updated for the international market. Hence there is a mix of measurements (m / ft), teams, leagues and coaches referred too which we have never heard off and a number of items refer to the old side out scoring method and associated rules. [I believe a number of USA based leagues did not change to RPS at the same time as the rest of the world].

Overall these are minor points, to what is a good all round book and one which I will be using to take my coaching to the next level and I full agree with the book summary on the back cover. "Each time you open this book you'll learn something new and useful for the next practice".

The book is by Human Kinetics and is priced at £ 12.68 pounds and is available from our on-line volleyball book store.

2002 Men's Volleyball World Championship

The 2002 Men's Volleyball World Championship came to a colorful close on Sunday night here in the Argentine capital when Brazil stole the trophy from Russia in a thrilling five set match that was a worthy conclusion to the tournament.

The final, a repeat of the same event here 20 years ago when Argentina was host and Russia was the Soviet Union and won the title, ended in a Brazilian celebration after the 72nd match ended in a blaze of green and gold and Brazil took home the cup after winning the tiebreaker.

Here in Argentina, where the country's economic crisis had raised doubts about staging the Championship earlier in the year, spectators took the event to heart and turned the stadiums in the six host cities of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Santa Fe, Salta, Mar del Plata and San Juan of into a fiesta of volleyball that drew more than 330,000 spectators.

Luna Park Stadium here in Buenos Aires was always sold out when the host team was playing and the crowd turned it into a sea of blue and white flags while they sang and danced their way through the championship. Indeed every player from the 24 competing countries will go home with the tune "Ole, ole, ola, Argentina!" ringing in their ears.

"It is a fantastic moment to play under these conditions, even if you are the opponent of Argentina," the French head coach Philippe Blain said during the tournament. "This is something the players will always remember." The event was also broadcast worldwide to around 200 countries by host broadcaster ESPN, expanding to millions the numbers of volleyball fans who enjoyed this quality tournament.

The 2002 Men's World Championship also launched a new era in volleyball with the emergence of European teams into the spotlight. France, with their creative play and talented individual players thrilled the crowds and finished with the bronze medal - their first ever at a world championship. Greece and Portugal also delivered great results and finished in the top eight of the tournament. Both teams, and especially Portugal, who have a great selection of very young players, will definitely be a team to watch closely in the coming years.

For Italy, the event was a disappointment. They came here to defend the title they won three times in a row and went away with fifth place after beating Argentina on Sunday. Cuba, bronze medalist in 1998, didn't survive the first round and Netherlands, a team that was always in the Top Eight since 1988, didn't make it to the quarterfinal.

The next World Championship, in four years time, will be in Japan.

Boom Boom Volleyball
I was introduced to Boom Boom Volleyball this week, it's a free on-line beach game at www.mohsye.com/enter.htm
Unfortunately you really need broadband or a LAN access to play the game properly and if using your work access, you may want to turn the volume down.

Using Setters in the 5-1  - rsv

I know the usual advantage of a 5-1 is consistent setting from one player, the ability for the setter to attack, and mixing it up with more back-row attacks. However - I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of a 5-1 offense where the back-row setter is replaced by another setter in the front-row. I've watched the UCLA women a couple of times this season, and I think they've been subbing out two setters in a 5-1. However - their's seems to be in order to get play time for two players, and both setters are OK in the front.

y_p_w y_p_w@hotmail.com

Well, in my point of view it is mostly a higher degree of specialization: When going to 5-1 from 6-2 you have 5 attackers instead of 4 and only one setter. The setter usually does not attack anymore, at least not on the 3rd ball. The back-row-attack argument is not valid IMHO: when the setter is in the back, you have 2 only (same as 6-2), and when in front, yes 3, but you lose one front-row attack for it, hardly a good deal :-)

bob fra@bwi.bepr.ethz.ch

I've previously run a 5-1 with 3 setters. One taller front row setter who was slow, another shorter setter who could not serve, and a 3rd setter who had a wicked serve, but didn't have the locational consistency as the other two. Yes, it meant using 3 subs every complete rotation, but it worked out and everyone seems satisfied with their limited roles.

Roger O rozima1@NOSPAMattbi.com

I have seen it occasionally and it usually occurs when the one setter isn't tall enough to block and the second setter doesn't play "D" very well. If this
is the case in your situation then teach the tall one to play back row better...you can't teach the short one to be tall!

Bob vballdancer1@aol.com

In the collegiate club program here at WSU we played this style with 2 setters who only played back row. Each had a taller blocker / Opposite
hitter who came in for the on the front row. This allowed taller block as well as 3 front-row hitters every rotation. We were playing the collegiate club rules (NIRSA), a modified form of USAV rules, where we had 12 total team subs and unlimited entries. With a rally score game to 25 you can usually get through the game without burning all of the subs. (4 per rotation) Or at the very least get to the final 4-5 points this way.

We also tried a modified setter system with the setter playing the front left side, ever seen this? Caused lots of headaches in the blocking
matchups and our right-handed setter could bang from there.

ASTERIX KIELDRECHT VOLLEYBALL CLUB
Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

To learn more about professional Volleyball and European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in National & European competitions.

After three weeks in the national competition, we can already see the main favourites emerge. Tongeren has an extremely strong team, whereas Herentals is performing much better than some pundits had predicted. Melsele confirms the good results of last year. Charleroi and Gent are also present in the top half of the table.

And Asterix ? We lost last week in a nail-biting 5 set game from Tongeren. We intend to make Herentals pay for this, when they come to Kieldrecht next week. Our Spanish setter Tico does not like losing, and when she lets her Andalusian furor go, take cover!

Most attention goes to the European qualification tournament for the Top Teams Cup. We organize this tournament in Kieldrecht on 8, 9 and 10 November. Opponents are Athens (Greece), Ploiesti (Romania) and Kiriat Ata (Israel). More information and pictures of these teams on our website http://go.to/kieldrecht

Keep your fingers crossed for our ladies, because we really want to win this tournament !

SPECIAL CASES

9.6 The Korean team won the rally to earn a point and the right to serve. Before rotating to serve, the game captain of Korea asked the second referee for a line up check to determine the correct server. The scorer told the second referee that player #10 was the correct server.

Player #10 then served four points. Before the #10 could serve again, the scorer informed the second referee that, in fact, player #8 should have been serving for Korea. What is the correct decision for the first referee to make?

The first referee ruled that the four Korean points scored by player #10 would be canceled. The Korean team returned to the score and position in which #8 should have served. All team time outs and substitutions occurring during those four rallies were canceled. Misconduct sanctions and technical time outs remain as played.

The teams must revert to as close to their original line up as is possible. Player #8 for Korea was then allowed to serve and the game was continued from the point that the game captain of Korea requested to know the correct server. These events must be recorded on the scoresheet.
