My name is Julian David and I am the events organiser for this years above carnival that we are staging in Rothamsted Park on Sunday May 18th 2003. I am writing ask you whether or not you could help us out with a small situation we have. We are staging a major carnival and the theme this year is loosely connected to the great British beach holiday! We have some fantastic events appearing, but we are in desparate shortage of Lady Beach Volley ball players. Can anyone Help?

The event raises around £30,000 every year for charities and this year we hope to surpass that. PLEASE PLEASE can you help? I look forward to hearing from you very soon.

Its the 40th Anniversary of the carnival. A sand court and posts are in hand. Bring your own ball. There is a sports centre nearby so changing and showering can be arranged.

Kindest Regards
Julian David julian.david@ntlworld.com

THIS WEEKS PHOTOS
Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

To learn more about professional Volleyball and European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in National & European competitions.

All visiting teams are received by the Mayor at our City Hall.

European Top Teams Cup

The European campaign of Kieldrecht is over for this year.

The Dutch girls from Oldenzaal eliminated Asterix from the European Top Teams Cup. They played a very good game in Kieldrecht, and won with 1-3.

There was no way we could stop their enthusiasm (and their very hard jump-serves!). Asterix went to Holland for the return match without much hope.

After a disastrous first set, we managed to win sets two and three. The fourth set was a real nail-biter. If we could win with 19-25, we would proceed to the Final Four, but if the Dutch scored 20 points or more, they would be the winners. We started very well, took a 3-7 lead. And then,  disaster struck. The Swedish referees allowed a back row player to attack from within the attack zone, confusion, we protested, but the game continued.

Our players lost concentration, and from 3-7 the score went to 20-10. It was all over. Photographers and a local carnival band came on the court, but it did not matter anymore. Oldenzaal and not Kieldrecht will play the final four next week in Bern (Switzerland).

Result: Total points: Asterix = 179 Arke = 190
Wednesday 12 February 2003, 20.30 h: Asterix Kieldrecht - Arke Pullux Oldenzaal (The Netherlands): 1-3 loss ....
Thursday 20 February 2003, at 7:30 pm: Arke Pollux - Asterix Kieldrecht: 2-3 win,  Asterix is eliminated.

TOP TEAMS CUP WOMEN - 02/03 - Final Four in Bern (SUI)

FRA - RC VILLEBON 91 vs NED - Arke Pollux OLDENZAAL
SUI - Zeiler KÖNIZ vs BEL - Eburon TONGEREN

We can now focus on the national cup final, which will be played near Liège on Sunday, March 30, 2003 against Tongeren. The day starts with our famous eggs-and-bacon breakfast at 9.00 am, the busses leave Kieldrecht at 11.30 and the game will start at 14.30. In the evening there will of course be a party. This is our sixth cup final, and we really want to win a sixth time.

In the national competition, there is not much news to tell. The play-offs will take place every weekend in April.

The first registrations for our International Tournament have been received. The Tournament takes place in the weekend of 23 and 24 August 2003. The first team to register was the University of Galatasaray (Turkey). So it is time to start preparing for your trip to Belgium this summer !

CITY OF EDINBURGH

CITY OF EDINBURGH secured the men’s second division title in the Scottish League on Saturday and a unique place in Scottish volleyball history. The 25-17, 25-13, 25-16, 25-21, 15-8 win over closest rivals Stirling Grange at Queensferry High School means they cannot be caught at the top of the table.

Having now won every division they have entered at the first time of asking since coming into the league in Division Five, they promise to be a force to be reckoned with in the top flight next season. City of Edinburgh have risen through the ranks by raising their own players and two of those, Paul Glissov and Chris Fraser, have gone on to be capped by Scotland.

Both were in Estonia last week with the national side but returned to help Edinburgh to victory on Saturday. Coach Ian Brownlee has overseen the development of the side which started out in the Scottish Junior League before graduating to the senior arena. "We started the team with school-aged players, including Scott McKenzie, Iain Wallace and Stuart McColl from Queensferry High School and a lot of those players are still involved," he explained.

"We contacted schools in the Edinburgh area asking if they’d be interested in trying out and we had about ten players that first season. "We’ve brought new players in but essentially we have the same core group we started with. "There was a gap season after winning the junior league but then we decided to enter the national leagues."

A soft court  -  rsv

Besides having sand or wading water, what's another way to have a soft court? Sand gives but not a lot. Water nicely cushions but requires a wading pool.
Scott T. Jensen stj@charter.net

Sand may be your best bet though... At American Sports Center in Crystal Lake, IL, they have a turf-like surface on which they play indoor grass volleyball. Kinda interesting and perhaps the sort of thing you might be looking for. But then again, that's special equipment as well.

What are you looking to do, and for what purpose?
Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

The tavern owner where my league plays is looking on putting in a new volleyball court. Right now, the idea is a knee-high wading pool. He already has sand courts. He's just looking for something to make his place stand out from all the rest and players (mainly women, he says) have asked about him having something softer than sand.
Scott Jensen stj@charter.net

Oh my. Have they asked their insurance company or attorneys about this idea?
Alcohol, volleyball and a kneed high wading pool for people to fall down in do not sound like an advisable combination.

A few points worth considering...
Sand comes in dizzying array of grades. Good sand is not hard. At all. If you fall in it running and you skin a knee or get any sort of abrasion or feel skin pain, you're playing in bad sand.

Is it possible his existing sand courts are perceived as hard because the sand is either of a poor (coarse, construction/fill) grade, or was not double washed and the dirt in it is causing it to pack and be hard?

If fixing the sand courts is not an option, then perhaps this indoor soft grass-like turf is worth exploring. At the sport center I mentioned, they play soccer on it, human bungee football (funny funny stuff--kids in little harnesses suspended from the ceiling on stretch cords playing soccer), and grass volleyball.
Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

I would assume (knowing him) that he just ordered sand from a local quarry and didn't ask for any special kind of sand. Is there a special name and/or way of ordering for the best sand?
Scott T. Jensen stj@charter.net

Oy. No wonder people are complaining. It's probably like sandpaper! I find this is the number one mistake people make in building sand courts. There's no substitute for driving out to the aggregate supplier and feeling the sand you'd be getting.

"Round grain, double washed, river bottom masonry sand" is what you're hunting for ideally, but if my experience is any indicator, don't expect those to be terms the aggregate guys hear every day. I wouldn't expect every aggregate supplier to have such stuff in their product line....so calling around is worth it.

I've played on silica sand before..and it's very soft. It gives a nifty sounds when you move it in too. And don't overlook the value of washing and double washed is best if it's available.

When you talk to the tavern owner, be sure to get that knee-high wading pool idea out of his head. His tavern-goers would go from being scraped up and dirty from the current construction sand to having torn MCL's, ACL's, sprained ankles, and (if the bottom of the pool would be hard) bruised tailbones, cracking their body on the hard pool bottom, doing god knows what at the borders of the court not to mention the inconvenience of being soaking wet after every game.
Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

Recently I visit a local elementary school, there is this recycled shredded tire in the play yard. It gave the soft bouncy sensation when walked on. But I don't know if you can walk on it bare footed.

Another one I read it a while back in the newspaper a guy had this looked like a walleyball court on a trampoline in his backyard which his neighbor complained about. It'll make a pretty interesting game but that will NOT be the volleyball as we know.
FC (angli@NOSPAMihgp.ih.lucent.com

O.K. we know all about sand courts and Walleyball, but what's this human bungee football thing!!! does anyone know?

Beach Volleyball

The Xbox has Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball, the GameCube has Beach Spikers, and now PlayStation 2 owners can finally muck around in the sand with a host of scantly clad women, thanks to Acclaim’s newly announced Beach Volleyball.

There are 14 characters in total, along with 12 beaches to play on. Gameplay modes include arcade, exhibition, and tournament plus various mini-games. As in Dead or Alive: XBV and Beach Spikers, you can fiddle about with character's skin colour, hairstyle, clothes and accessories.

It’ll be out in August – to coincide with the summer sun. If we actually get any, that is.

SWATCH-FIVB World Tour

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and SWATCH, the world leading designers and manufactures of timing devices and wristwatches, have signed a major sponsorship agreement whereby SWATCH becomes title sponsor for the Beach Volleyball World Tour.
In keeping with SWATCH's innovative reputation, the deal goes beyond mere financial support to include timing and technical innovations like the supply of electronic scoreboards and electronic measurements of speed of service etc., features that that will increase public and media interest in rapidly growing summer sport.

We know Beach Volleyball is a magic mix of sport and entertainment and it is enjoying phenomenal growth in many countries, so we are very happy to welcome an international partner of the quality of SWATCH,said FIVB President, Dr. Rubn Acosta.

The energy and lifestyle of Beach volleyball is a perfect fit with what Swatch is all about, said Michele Sofisti, President of Swatch. We have been involved in the sport on different levels for many years. This global agreement is a natural progression of that involvement. SWATCH executives told the FIVB during the negotiations that they are convinced that Beach Volleyball is now the most popular summer sport, and they were also committed to a massive public relations and communication campaign to further enhance its image. The company, which has a huge international profile and is a watchword in many countries, will also produce a special Beach Volleyball SWATCH watch and be present at all events with points of sales and merchandising activities.
It is clear to us that the interest in Beach Volleyball is exploding. The phenomenal success we enjoyed at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games has created a wave of popularity in many countries, said Angelo Squeo, FIVB Beach Volleyball Coordinator. We welcome SWATCH as our partner and we look forward to working hand-in-hand with them to further develop the sport. Beach Volleyball is definitely on the brink of becoming one of the world's most popular summer sports and this important partnership will enhance that situation even more.

2003 World Championship

The 2003 World Championship will run entirely separate tournaments for the men’s and the women’s competition over two weeks in October.

Until now, the World Championship tournaments for both genders have always been held virtually simultaneously, with the women’s event culminating in the final on Saturday and the men’s event on Sunday.

In 2003, taking advantage of the marvelous setting of Copacana, the women’s event will be held from October 7-12, followed by the men’s event from October 14-19. The timetable will allow fans in Brazil, where the sport has a cult following, to actively follow both competitions

“The 2003 World Championship will certainly be the highlight of the season,” said FIVB Beach Volleyball Coordinator Angelo Squeo. “Brazil produces some of the world’s best players and having the tournaments over two weeks to double the action and double the fun.”

FIVB also announced on Friday that the planned World Tour event for Poland has been postponed until 2004. “We will miss Poland in this year’s calendar, but we are sure that they will be back in the calendar for 2004 and put on a terrific event,” Mr. Squeo said.

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

SPECIAL CASES

9.14 In the Women's Final Olympic Qualification Tournament Croatia was leading Korea 6 - 5 in the second set. After the rally, the players were trying to find a wet spot on the court. The Korean assistant coach came to the sideline to assist the players to find the wet spot.

The first referee, then, called the Korean captain and told her to tell the assistant coach to stay on the bench. Did the first referee make a correct decision?
The assistant coach is allowed to sit on the bench and may not intervene in the match. Only the coach may walk along the sideline. The first referee was correct. Rules 5.2.3.4, 5.3.1

9.15 In the Women's Final Olympic Qualification Tournament the Netherlands led China 24- 20. The Netherlands blocker, Chaine Ataelens, was slow to form a collective block and was about two steps away from the collective block when the Chinese attacker hit the ball. Before Ataelens could reach to top of the
net to block, the ball hit Ataelens at a height about half way between the top and the bottom of the net. The Netherlands then played the ball with three more
contacts before winning the rally. Was the first referee correct in allowing the rally to be won by the Netherlands?

The first referee was not correct in allowing the Netherlands to win the rally. Ataelens was not part of the collective block and was not higher than the top of the net when the ball contacted her. Therefore she cannot be considered to be a blocker. Since her ball contact was the first of the team's three contacts, the Netherlands team committed the fault of four hits and should have lost the rally. Rules: 10.3.1, 15.1.1
