Adur Doubles & Triples Tournament – 31st May/1st June 2003

Calling all volleyballers!

This is your invitation to enter the 2003 Adur Doubles & Triples Tournament, being run at the end of May. The Men’s and Women’s Doubles competitions are being held on Saturday 31st May, and the mixed Triples competition takes place on Sunday 1st June. [Some of you will know that Lancing Volleyball Club has this year changed its name to Adur Volleyball Club. We have retained the old club title for the tournament this year because many people will not be familiar with the new name. Next year’s tournament will be titled “Adur Doubles & Triples”]

What sort of competition is it?

An indoor tournament, played on an 8m x 8m court (compared with 9m x 9m for 6-a-side indoor volleyball). Normal indoor rules apply with the addition of a NO TIPPING (guiding the ball with the fingertips over the net) rule, and setting over the net is allowed ONLY if in line with the body. These extra rules worked well last year.

Team entries are allocated into pools of 4-8 teams (depending on number of entries), with all teams in each pool playing each other once. Teams are then sorted into upper and lower divisions for a second set of pool matches. Top teams from each pool then play off in the finals for division winner.

We shall aim to provide at least 6 matches for each team (depending on entry numbers). Matches will be of one set duration, with rally point scoring. As usual, all teams will share the officiating for the other matches in their pool.

What standard is it suitable for?

The tournament is suitable for players of all standards. It is run so that all teams get a chance to play competitive matches. This is where the “Player Standard” part of the entry form comes in.

Where is it?

Southwick Leisure Centre, Old Barn Way, Southwick. This is about 3½ miles west of Brighton Pier and ½ mile from the coast. Directions will be sent out with the tournament programme.

Entries

We hope you will want to enter a team for both the Doubles and Triples tournaments, though we’ll be glad to accept entries for one tournament only. Remember that triples teams must have at least one woman player.

Entry fees:                        Doubles £17.00/team                        Triples £25.50/team Lancing Doubles & Triples Entry Form

Accommodation

For those that are prepared to brave it, the Leisure Centre usually allows free camping in its grounds on the Friday and Saturday nights, although local bylaws prohibit cooking.

The job of Head Coach is essentially a voluntary position and should be assigned to an enthusiastic and committed person. Ideally, the successful candidate should have extensive experience of coaching volleyball at an Irish Premiership level or equivalent and people management skills, the latter preferably obtained in a different position than the one of volleyball coach.

Priority will be given to candidates committed to coach the Premier Men's team as the coaching position for that team is currently vacant. Application
Applicants should forward Curriculum Vitae and a brief outline (max 2 pages), in which the candidate should explain how he or she intends to develop volleyball in UCD.

The applications should be forwarded by e-mail to Sparviero@eircom.net or by post to:

The organisation of the club
The club is managed by a committee of (11) members elected by the AGM. The new Head coach will work in collaboration with and under the supervision of the committee. Any committee decision is final; however this board acts under the supervision of the UCD Athletic Union Council and the UCD Sport Department. For any questions please e-mail Sparviero@eircom.net

The 2003 Exeter Ladies Volleyball Challenge

The clear winner of this year's Exeter Ladies Volleyball Challenge was "the sport of women's volleyball". Although any of the top four placed teams could have won the title (and supply of alcohol) it was Lipson Ladies from Plymouth who edged out Torexe for the win.

As well as the tournament title, this is also a participation event and hence the real winners of the day were the teams competing in a ladies event for the first time, like Totnes and Paignton. We don't all live in an area where there is easy access to a ladies team or a local ladies league so we also put together an All Stars team for the event. Made up of individual players who did not have a club team to play for, for one player, it was the first time she had ever played on a ladies height net.

Lipson v Marjon (in Red)

Coach Paul Reed watching his SW U17 team against the All Stars

Also competing and making their first appearance in Exeter, were the Southwest under 15 and under 17 teams. They were getting in some last minute match practice before their national competition this weekend and impressed everyone with their quality of volleyball and team organisation.

Taking part at this event was excellent PR for the teams and coaching staff, a number of local junior players are now looking forward to taking part in next season's team selection trails.

We have previously held this event in Dawlish, this being the nearest double court volleyball venue to Exeter, but this year the Exeter Riverside LC management completed a £7,500 upgrade to their volleyball facilities. With a dividing net and a second court, the sport now has its first full double court facility in the city.

Once again the event was over subscribed, with the maximum of twelve teams taking part, making this the largest event of its kind in the Southwest. The Exeter & District Volleyball Association, Torexe VC and the Volleyball Newsletter kindly sponsored the event.

NEWS ITEMS
Northern Ireland CUP results

The University of Ulster hosted the end of season Northern Ireland Volleyball Blitz at Jordanstown Saturday (26 April).

Belfast retained the Women's Cup beating Craigavon Aztecettes 3-1 although Chloe Walkinshaw of Aztecettes was named Most valuable Player.

Craigavon reversed that result beating last year's winners Queen's University Belfast 2-0 in the final and the Armaghmen's Marc Robinson won MVP. Newly crowned League champions UUJ looked on course for the double but ran out of wind in their semi final against QUB. Civil Service pushed Aztecs all the way in the other semi-final confirming their successes in the league.

Upcoming events are the N. Ireland vs. Republic of Ireland Senior men's international match at UUJ in June and a Beach Volley tournament in Belfast over the holiday 11/13 July weekend.

How much chocolate do you need to eat to get a free Volleyball equipment from Cadbury?

The chocolate manufacturer Cadbury is launching a £9m campaign to persuade children to buy 160m chocolate bars, containing nearly 2m kg of fat, in exchange for "free" sports equipment for their schools. It says the initiative will help to tackle obesity. The marketing scheme, called Cadbury Get Active, is being promoted with the Youth Sport Trust through schools. It has been endorsed by the minister for sport, Richard Caborn. It also uses sports stars Paula Radcliffe and Audley Harrison to link the brand with healthy activity.

To earn the equipment, schoolchildren will have to collect tokens from the main brands of Cadbury chocolate. A set of posts and net for volleyball for secondary schoolchildren would require, for example, tokens from 5,440 chocolate bars.

But consumer watchdogs and health organisations are furious at the move. The Food Commission points out that a school will need to encourage children to spend more than £2,000 on chocolate and consume nearly 1.25m calories to win the volleyball posts and net. If British schoolchildren buy all of the 160m tokens Cadbury plans to issue, they would have to purchase nearly 2m kg of fat.

To earn one netball worth about £5, primary schoolchildren would have to spend nearly £40 on chocolate and consume more 20,000 calories. A 10-year-old child eating enough chocolate to earn a basketball through the scheme would need to play basketball for 90 hours to burn off the calories consumed. A junior basketball team would have to play 27 full-length games to burn off the calories.

The chairman of the government's obesity taskforce, Professor Phil James, said: "This is a classic example of how the food and soft drinks industry are failing to take on board that they are major contributors to obesity problems throughout the world. "They always try to divert attention to physical activity. Independent analysts have found that Cadbury Schweppes has one of the worst portfolios for products in terms of children's well being."

Tim Lobstein, the director of the Food Commission, con demned the scheme. "The amounts of chocolate involved for these 'gifts' is quite astounding. It is ridiculous to combine a fitness campaign with eating chocolate."

The British Dietetic Association also said the promotion went against all public health messages. A spokeswoman, Catherine Collins, said: "We are running an Eat to be Fit campaign at the moment warning children of obesity. Our research shows 31% of children are overweight and 17% are obese. "Activity is a vital part of staying fit and linking it with eating chocolate is not on."

In the press release issued by Cadbury to launch the campaign, Richard Caborn is quoted as saying that he is "delighted that Cadbury is prepared to support a drive [which] could make a real difference to the quality of young people's lives". A spokesman for the Department of Sport said it did not believe the £9m marketing push would encourage children to buy more chocolate. "The campaign will encourage children to realise that when they eat chocolate they need to do it in the context of a balanced life and being active." Cadbury defended the campaign, saying it expected "the wider community to club together to use their wrappers from the chocolate they are already eating".

It said in a statement that the Food Commission's concern about calories consumed to earn the equipment was misguided. "Children consume fewer calories than they did 30 years ago, yet the number of obese children is on the rise because children are leading more sedentary lifestyles," it said. "Get Active is all about activity, not diet."

Belfast recognises Volleyballers

The City of Belfast recognised the achievement of representatives in 30 sports for the work they have done in recent years of Hope after years of vicious and sinister Terror. Four volleyballers received the high accolade from V.I.P. Guest "Smokin'" Joe Frazier Tokio Olympic Gold Medallist and former World Heavyweight Boxing champion at the Lord Mayor Alex Maskey's sumptuous City Hall banquet.

Sue McGrath of Belfast City VC was recognised for her work in bringing the club to its highest ever finish in the All Ireland league 3rd place while keeping the Northern Ireland league side going. Her teenage son and daughter are playing League volleyball;

Jeff Rea was recognised for his work in former champion club Olympia Belfast while keenly participating in coaching and refereeing as well as playing. Jeff had to keep the club organisation together after the College facilities they had used for 5 years were suddenly closed down a year ago;

Nick Wright of Belfast Sharks is a current International player and assistant coach with the Northern Ireland Women's squad. He led his University of Ulster team to the All Ireland Students' Plate victory earlier this year and this month the students won the Northern Ireland Men's League;

Paddy Murphy is the Hon President of the Northern Ireland Association and a member of the British Board. He has retired after 20 years as Ireland's first and only International Referee and been at the forefront of cross-border volleyball developments and brought Iceland, Belgium and South Africa to play in Belfast over recent years. He spearheaded Beach Volleyball in Belfast and brought a 2-court night-long demonstration onto downtown Belfast streets as part of the new Millennium celebrations.

Craigavon won the Men's Cup and Belfast retained the women's Cup at last weekend's Blitz in Jordanstown. One interesting fact that the 100 and more participants commented on was the high quality of play. This was also reflected in the spread of votes for Most Valuable Player awards. Votes for Lindsay Hill of Aztecs and Marion McLellan of Belfast gave Chloe Walkinshaw a close run before the brilliant young Aztec was awarded MVP. The men's nomination included Tendayi Cheviro of Belfast, Eddie Lian of UUJ, Neil Carson and Kevin Upritchard of Aztecs all got votes but Mark Robinson of Aztecs was the deserved MVP at the final count.

4th Asian youth girls volleyball championship

Mighty China stamped their authority over the 4th Asian youth girls volleyball championship after a 3-1 victory over hosts Thailand in the final. DPR Korea powered past Chinese Taipei in straight sets to finish second in this single round robin tournament and joined China and Thailand to win berths to the world youth girls under-18championship scheduled for August 9 to 17 in Kenya.

At the end of the eight-day competition, China topped the overall standings with 14 points from seven straight wins. DPR Korea finished second with one point behind from six wins against one loss to China, with Thailand collecting 12 points in third place overall. Chinese Taipei finished fourth with 11 points, while India, Kazakhstan and Australia came in fifth, sixth and seventh with 10,9 and 8 points respectively. The Philippines, which failed to take a set in the competition, trailed with seven points.

China, which captured their first Asian title in Singapore in 1999, mixed the offensive mobility of power-hitter captain Gao Muzi and Wang Yimei with lightning spikes by the 1.92-meter-tall Xue Ming to take the first two set 25-16, 25-9. Well supported by the local fans, Thailand regrouped and with aggressive tactics, stole the next set, which was the only one conceded by China in the tournament. Fierce attacking by Thai players Saimai Pladsrichuay and On-umaSitthirak pierced the Chinese defense to snatch the hard-fought set 25-20. But in the fourth set, China roared back mighty and soon captured the set 25-13, the match and the title.

In the later match, DPR Korea demolished Chinese Taipei 25-11, 25-17, 25-14 for a second-place finish. Both teams started strongly but the DPR Koreans, with Sin Yong Sun tearing their opponents' defense apart with her brilliant form swallowed the first set 25-11. Chinese Taipei, powered by Yen Pei Ling and Tsai Tsui Jung, heightened their defense and counter-attacked to narrow the gap at15-20 in the second set before they lost their rhythm and allowed DPR Korea to claim the set 25-17. The DPR Koreans continued their dazzling form in the third set where they won 25-14.

In the play-off matches, India's dreams of beating Australia intheir final clash became reality after they outclassed the taller Aussies in straight sets 25-10, 25-21, 25-15, and Kazakhstan beat the Filipinos 25-11, 25-15, 25-16. Enditem

Rotations

When one simulates two teams of equal strength taken for instance at a score rate of 0.35 than the number of serves per set show a decreasing trend with service rank.

4.60 / 4.36 / 4.08 / 3.76 / 3.49 / 3.23

It is shown hence that the lead server takes more services than the final server does. The idea has been discussed in the past, that if there are real differences in strength than the stronger rotations should be brought foreword. This is again be illustrated in next example where one of the rotations has been take at a score rate of 0.6. For those more familiar with points per rotation this equal to 1.5 PPR.

The percentage of sets won is decreasing when the stronger rotation shifts towards the final position.

67.9 / 67.6 / 66.7 / 65.1 / 63.9 / 62.7

The choice might be more difficult when score rate or PPR are varying with serve position. The following is a typical example given by Coleman in the volleyball-coaching bible

Rot Ppr USA PPR Opp Points
1 0.52 0.47 10
2 0.51 0.51 1
3 0.41 0.51 -19
4 0.43 0.33 19
5 0.57 0.46 20
6 0.45 0.43 4

From the original data it was concluded that most probably rotations 1 and 2 were leading. From the point distribution this would not appear the best solution and the author is suggesting that rotation 5 possibly would have been a better solution. In simulating the various rotations against a fixed opponent distribution the results indicate that rotation 5 would indeed be an optimal solution. This is assuming that the basic data of the adversary do not change. The percentage of won matches are as follows indicating rotation 5 as an optimal solution.

Rot1 Rot2 Rot3 Rot4 Rot5 Rot-
% won 51.8 51.1 51.2 52.2 52.6 50.6

The particular property of this rotation is that the lead server has the maximum score rate of 0.57 and the correlation coefficient against the rank is most negative. These two criteria might therefore be an acceptable recommendation for optimization of the rotation profile and distribution.

Video Games
Outlaw Volleyball

Simon & Schuster has announced that Outlaw Volleyball, which is in development for the Xbox, has been rated Mature by the ESRB. Outlaw Volleyball features four different modes to choose from. In tour, players will have to exhibit their volleyball skills on a variety of courts against different opponents.

Exhibition lets players jump right into a game, and the tutorials option explains the gameplay mechanics. Lastly, there's a drills option, which is essentially a collection of volleyball-themed mini games. Outlaw Volleyball will also have support for online play via Xbox Live.

Outlaw Volleyball is currently scheduled for release in June.

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

SPECIAL CASES

9.19 Team Great Britain is in possession of the ball in preparation to serve. The game captain requests confirmation of the correct server. The scorer gives the information that player #6 is the server. The game captain disputes that information and is told again that player #6 is the server.

The game captain is still not satisfied and while attempting to approach the referee the first referee whistles for service. Amidst confusion, Team Great Britain is penalized for not serving within the allowed eight seconds.

In rechecking the scoresheet, it is found that the coach of Team Great Britain had submitted an incorrect line-up which had player #6 in two positions. It should have been #6 and #1. Number #1 should have been serving as the game captain surmised. What is the correct ruling by the first referee at this time?

Common sense must prevail in resolving this case. The initial error was that of the coach of Team Great Britain when he submitted his incorrect line up. This was compounded by the inattention of the second referee and the scorer.

Player #1 should be allowed to serve. Team Great Britain should not be penalized for the incorrect server. On the other hand, the original error of the coach caused a delay of the game, thus a delay sanction should be issued.

Further, the second referee must request a new line-up sheet from the coach.
