2012 Olympic Beach Volleyball in Regents Park

Britain Backs London's 2012 Olympics Bid. London joined New York and Madrid in the race to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, in what is shaping up as a big-city battle for the games. Leipzig, Germany, and Cuba have also announced plans to bid. Moscow, Paris and the Brazilian cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are also possibilities.

Countries wanting to bid for the 2012 Summer Games have until July 15 to select a city and apply. The International Olympic Committee will make its final decision in July 2005. Tessa Jowell, secretary of state for culture, media and sport, announced government backing Thursday in the House of Commons. London mayor Ken Livingston, sports minister Richard Caborn and officials of the British Olympic Committee are also supporting the bid.

"I am delighted to be able to inform the House ... the government has decided to give their wholehearted backing to host the Olympic Games and the Paralympics in 2012," Jowell said. A decision to pursue the bid was delayed several times, sparking concern about the government's support. Government estimates put the cost of hosting the games at £4.4 billion pounds, half of which the government would be expected to underwrite.

Prime Minister Tony Blair described the government's support as a "really good thing to do," as he met with rower Steven Redgrave, who won gold in five straight games. "We have always been strong supporters of the Olympic movement as one of only three countries to send teams to every modern summer and winter games. Yet we have not hosted the games in over 50 years," Blair said.

"London will enter a hotly contested race against other world class cities, but I hope that everyone in the country can join me in giving their full support to the UK's campaign." London hosted the Olympics in 1948 and 1908. "London will be a front-runner if it tackles the challenges well, finds a good leader and puts all the components in place." Preliminary plans call for an Olympic stadium, warmup track and athletes village to be built in Stratford and beach volleyball at Regents Park.

[To date, I have been unable to find out  where the planed indoor volleyball stadium is going to be built, currently waiting for a reply from the British IOC (if anyone already knows, could you please let us know].

European Championship 2003 Girls Under-18
CROATIA NEW YOUTH CHAMPION

ZAGREB, Croatia, 27 April 2003 – Croatia dismissed Italy in straight sets in the final of the Girls Under-18 European Championship on Sunday here in the Croatian capital to seal the country’s first ever major volleyball title. Supported by more than 2,000 fans, Croatia mowed down Italy for the top spot after going into the championship with modest hopes of a minor placing.

Italy, the defending champion and title favorite was overwhelmed by not only the Croatian fans, but were also outplayed by the Croats who slipped through the first set 25-13 in apparent ease. RUSSIA TAKES TITLE AGAIN
ZAGREB, Croatia, 17 April 2003 – Russia again claimed the Boys Under-19 European Championship after defeating Poland (3-0) in Thursday’s final in Zagreb, Croatia. The Russian team was by far the best team of the tournament and won the title for the third time in a row. In the last edition, Russia also defeated Poland in the final.

Russia only had some difficulties in the second set of the final, played in the Dom Odbojke (house of volleyball) stadium in the Croatian capital of Zagreb. After Russia won the first set easily, the Polish team came back and grabbed a 24-20 lead in the second set. This was not enough to level the match. After Poland spoiled five chances to win the second set, Russia took a 2-0 lead on the first occasion. The Russian block was at that moment too strong for Polish attacker Marcel Gromadowski, after the final awarded as best attacker of the tournament.

Winning the second set was the sign for the young Russian Rockets to play concentrated again and completely overpowered the Polish opponent. Two aces of Pavel Kruglov, voted as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, brought Russia the victory.

Russia proved to be the best youth squad again. Since the first Boys Under-19 European Championship in Spain eight years ago, Russia won four of the five titles. This young generation of Russian players will surly be back in the senior team in a couple of years. For example setter Serguei Grankine and attackers Roman Danilov and Pavel Kruglov are potential players for the Russian senior national team in the future.

Italy claimed the bronze medal after a difficult 3-1victory over Germany, the most surprising team in this event. The German talents took the first set, but didn’t have the power after this set to continue to punish the ‘Squadra Azzurra’. Italy took over the momentum and won the next three sets in a row.
Although Slovakia had to play early Thursday morning against host Croatia for the seventh place, the Slovak team was extremely happy with the 3-0 victory. Thanks to this win, Slovakia is qualified for the Boys Under-19 World Championship in Thailand this July. Six European teams are allowed to participate in this high level event and Slovakia took benefit of the fact that Germany as number four of the Boys Under-19 European Championship don’t want to participate in the World event. The Netherlands finished fifth after dismissing Czech Republic in a five sets thriller (3-2). FINAL RANKING

Too Little Knee Stiffening Leads to High Injury Rate In Women

Study of NCAA athletes shows why women are eight times more likely to get ACL knee injuries than men. Specific exercises may protect women's knees from injury and re-injury, the findings suggest. The ACL is the anterior cruciate ligament. It's one of two ligaments that crisscross in the knee, making it stable. When a person jumps in the air and then comes down on one leg as he or she cuts off in a new direction, the ACL can rupture. It's a common knee injury in basketball, soccer, and other sports that require jumping, pivoting, and cutting.

Women who play such sports are much more likely to have ACL knee injuries than men. Edward M. Wojtys, MD, medical director of the sports medicine program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, wondered why. He asked for help from 12 women and 12 men who play NCAA Division-I basketball, volleyball, and soccer, and from 14 women and 14 men who play endurance sports -- bicycling, crew, and running.

Wojtys and colleagues designed a contraption that simulated a pivoting maneuver when landing on one foot. It also measured how well the athletes could stiffen their knee muscles. Even when male and female athletes were matched for age, height, weight, shoe size, activity level, and body mass index, the men were able to stiffen their knee muscles more than the women. "Historically, training has been the same for both men and women," Wojtys says in a news release. "This may not be the correct approach."

The problem isn't that women can't develop knee-stabilizing muscles. Surprisingly, women who engaged in non-pivoting sports could voluntarily stiffen their knee muscles better than women in pivoting sports. They could even do it better than men in non-pivoting sports.

This suggests that it would be possible to decrease women's ACL knee injuries by training them to strengthen protective muscles. Wojtys says coaches and trainers should rethink their muscle-training programs to account for the differences in the ways women and men use their knees. Wojtys and colleagues report their findings in the May issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

Asterix Kieldrecht Volleyball club

To learn more about the ups and downs of professional Volleyball and European events, we have decided to adopt a team, Asterix Kieldrecht from Belgium and follow their progress in National & European competitions.

For the first time in six years, Asterix did not win either the Belgian Volleyball Cup or the national title. And we did not make it to the final four of the European Cup either. Three near misses !

We just finished a nail biting play-off final, with five super games. Pictures on our website : http://users.tijd.com/~tdn02345/seizoen20022003/commentaar20022003.htm
Most of our players have decided to leave Asterix.

Some received an offer they could not refuse from foreign teams (Julie goes to Villebon Paris, and Lies may go to Italy), Tico wants to have children, some other players have too much work in their jobs and cannot make enough time available.

So we have been very active during the transfer period. New players come from Serbia, Germany, Poland and France (some of them were playing in Belgium before), we include two young talented players in the team, and we welcome back three players who left us one or two years ago (Tania Zhmakova, Irina Pavlova and Liesbet Van Breedam).
Finally, some news about our international tournament on 23 and 24 august. It is the 30th time that we organise it, so it will be special. Teams from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the UK, but also from Estonia, Nigeria, Turkey and Serbia have already registered. Look on the website of Asterix http://users.tijd.com/~tdn02345/etornooi.htm or send an email to kieldrecht@email.com. Two days of great volleyball and two (or more) nights of great fun and parties, in a truly international setting.
See you all !

SPECIAL CASES

9.20 In the Olympic Games during the women's match between Cuba and Canada there was a problem between the TV camera and one of the players. As the Cuban player was serving the TV "boom" arm at the end of the court swung down and struck the server. The player continued her serving action despite the interference and managed to serve the ball into the court and the rally continued.

The first referee did not stop the play or order a replay and there was no protest by the Cuban team. Is this the correct decision by the first referee?

The first referee was correct in this instance because it was spectacular and caused great interest and enthusiasm among the crowd. However, in other situations the first referee should consider replaying the rally.
