Volleyball Widows Club  - from rsv

Hi,  My husband has just been hired as the new head coach for a local college. He was assistant coach last year, and spent numerous hours away from home, and I know it will be twice as much next season. As a result I will be left at home with our children and would like some ideas from any other 'volleyball widows' as to how to make this transistion easy for our children as well as myself. I do have some ideas, but am curious to know what kind of things other people have done.

Thanks! Rebecca rebeccamm@shaw.ca

NEWS ITEMS

International Friendly

International Volleyball returned to Northern Ireland at the weekend (7 June) and the venue was the University of Ulster at Jordanstown alongside Belfast Lough with the visit of the squads of Republic of Ireland Under 18 Women and Scotland Senior Men - returning after a 10 year gap.

Scotland won the first set 25-22, but NI the next 25-17. The match see-sawed excitingly with Scotland winning the 3rd 25-23 and the hosts equalising 25-22.
Although not counting towards the final result, NIreland were ahead on points, a psychological blow to Scottish pride. But the deciding 5th set eventually swung the way to the visitors on excellent serving from captain Iain Cleland of Glasgow Mets to win 15-11 and by 3 sets to 2 after 1 hour 46 minutes. London
based Player/Coach Dave Rivers and team captain Nick Wright of UUJ were tireless in a hard fighting NIVA squad that earned prolonged applause from the
largest crowd watching volleyball here in years.

In the Under 18 International an understrength NI got off to a great start winning the first set 25-19 before the Republic stormed back with excellent service from Dubliners Lynsey Condell and captain Aoife Carroll to take the next 2 sets 25-17, 25-18. But excellent defensive blocking from Lurgan girls Claire Hamilton and Chloe Walkinshaw stopped the southern onrush to equalise 25-17. This produced a tense 5th set which eventually ran away from the NI
girls who could not cope with Condell's boom-servings giving the Republic a 15-5 score and win, after 1 hour 21 minutes, by 3 sets to 2 to avenge defeat in
Dublin on St Patrick's Day.

Match sponsors were University of Ulster, Mooney Hotel Group, The Wellington Park Hotel Belfast, Mikasa, ASICS, Sportset Volleyball On-Line of Dorset,
Lucozade Sport, Coca Cola, Congo Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland Volleyball.

Exeter University (in Green) won this year's Exeter Coaver Open Tournament, beating FP Viking's in a thrilling final. Thirty four senior team's from all over the country, battled it out in this year's event.

Although last years winners, London Lion Hearts defeated the University by one point in an earlier match, they themselves were narrowly beaten by Viking's in the semi-final.

Another Beach Volleyball Scorcher

Just like the first Beach Volleyball event of the season the Invitation Cup in Boscombe in May, the start of the British Beach Volleyball Grand Prix Series in Bournemouth was equally as hot, with blue skies and temperatures in the mid twenties.

With 30,000 people cramming on Bournemouth Beaches, the Beach Volleyball at Bournemouth Pier provided good free entertainment for those that wanted to
take in the carnival atmosphere and watch and admire fit bodies running and jumping in the sand.

In the Women's competition saw a first Grand Prix win for the UK under 19 Champion Kerri Olding. Kerri playing with the experienced International England player "Nessie" Malone, back playing after having three children managed to overpower Olympian Audrey Cooper and indoor professional player Maria Bertelli 2-0 in a very close fought final.

Despite magnificent defence from Audrey, Kerri and Nessie just had too much power on the net. The sand and the heat did not seem to effect the athletes as the ran around in the sand with ease to defend, and then finishing some long rallies with power spikes that we normally associate with the men's game.

The women's game has come on a long way since the 96' Atlanta Olympics where Audrey finished 9th with ex-partner "Mo" Glover.  Mo is currently away on
international duty with new player partner Denise Austin trying to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics. The girls now have to be fitter and stronger than ever to compete on the international stage, and lucky for some of the up and coming players of this country, Phil Moreland, fitness coach of the Women's Beach Volleyball Gold Medal winning team at 2000 Sydney Olympics, has been lending a helping hand.

In the Men's competition runners-up at the Boscombe Invitation Cup Jody Gooding and Colin Paterson managed to win their first final together against number 9 seeds Joe Mildred and Aran Stolberg. In the first set Joe and Aran played superbly to overcome the immense height and power of 22 year old Jody Gooding. Joe at his fittest for years, played the best beach volleyball of his career, together with the dynamic Aran Stolberg this new team were a force to be reckoned with. The heat slowly took its toll and the fitter Colin and Jody began to gain control. They levelled the final at one set all, despite a great effort to get back into the second set from the number 9 seeds. Joe and Aran began to suffer from an epic battle in the semi-finals against England Indoor internationals Clayton Lucas and Stuart Watson, which they narrowly won 22-20 in the third set.

With Joe cramping up the writing was on the wall, but Aran was not going to give up, he served 3 aces at match point against to give them a glimmer of hope. The crowd watched in amazement, but it was not to be, Jody and Colin finally winning 16-14 in the deciding set.

N.I. Schools' Beach Volleyball Tournament

The first Northern Ireland Schools' Beach Volleyball Tournament was held on Wednesday 18th June 2003 on Portstewart Strand from 11am - 3pm. 11 teams took part, 7 in the boys competition and 3 in the girls competition.

The Northern Ireland Schools Beach Volleyball Tournament began in difficult conditions, with a strong wind blowing across the courts. This leveled the teams and made it very difficult for the players to produce any skilful volleyball. Favorites Portadown College A (and the eventual winners) started slowly, dropping points to Dalriada and Portadown College B.

The girls competition was officiated by Northern Ireland Internationals, Nick Wright and Alan Workman. This tournament began differently as Portadown College 1sts were unaffected by the weather, starting with a convincing 3-0 victory over Dalriada, and following up with a similar win over Portadown College 2nds. They remained undefeated throughout the competition and completed their 100% record with a second 3-0 victory over Portadown College 2nds.

Thanks also to the National Trust who allowed us the use of the beach and in particular to Robert Patton and his team of wardens who raked the beach for 3 days before the tournament and organised caterers.

Tournament Format - rsv

Volleyballers, I am looking to put on a few "King/Queen of the Beach" style v-ball tournaments in my area this summer and was wondering if there are any online resources that detail the schedules to be used when setting up the tournament. This can be hard to do the day of as only one or two no-shows destroys a bracket that took you all week to make!! Are there any pre-made schedules out there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Matt Weaver mweaver@wsunix.wsu.edu

Matt, I dug this up from the RSV archives for a friend recently. Here, I found a 12-person format: http://hypbus.com/vicvball/vva/vic/doubles.html

McPeak closes in on AVP record with latest win

Top-seeded Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs beat fourth-seeded Dianne DeNecochea and Nancy Mason 21-17, 21-14 in the women's beach volleyball final of the San Diego Open on Sunday.

The victory was the 66th of McPeak's career, leaving her one away from tying the all-time record of Karolyn Kirby.

Jump on Sand - rsv

Hi, I am an indoor player by nature and my vertical jump (indoors) is good 104 cm (40 inches), but I seem to be struggling to get a half-decent jump on the sand. Is there a technique which I can employ to increase my jump on the beach court? I put a lot of pressure on my feet to get to the height I do, but with the same technique with beach, I sink too far into the sand! it's driving me crazy! I hope someone can help me.

mike ccmtran@mailbox.uq.edu.au

It will take time to get used to the sand. A lot of players that depend on momentum to get in the air have troubles on the sand. Give it some time. Once you get used to it, you will be leaping no matter what the surface.

Robin Chadwick Chadwick@ican.net

My sand jump improved tremendously when a top player suggested I not take the usual approach. The right way for me is to take a slow approach, more under-the-ball than we do indoors, and jump more straight up off a very soft plant. Also, I happen to have learned how to do a one-footed slide-style approach indoors, and have found that this is useful in sand.

Lynn Wallace lawall@xmission.com

EXACTLY! Like Mike, I'm primarily an indoor player who uses (or *used*) a long, fast approach and vicious plant to achieve maximum altitude. When I first played in sand many, many moons ago, I discovered that this hardwood approach was essentially useless on the beach. As Lynn suggests, shorten and slow your approach a bit. But you should also concentrate on generating as much momentum as possible with your upper body, using your lower back and a long, strong double-arm swing. You won't be anywhere near your indoor jump of 40 inches, but you'll be high enough to hit effectively.

p.s. When you get a chance to play in firm, slightly damp sand, revert to your indoor habits.

p.p.s. When you head indoors next fall, incorporate your "beach-specific" upper-body jumping mechanics with your long fast approach; you might add three or four more inches to your indoor jump.

RULES OF THE GAME
RULES OF THE GAME - from the FIVB

SPECIAL CASES

9.22 At the score of 9-7 in the third set of a match in the Kuwait League, the gymnasium lights went out. During that set, a starting player from one of the teams had been disqualified from the match. The match was resumed in another gymnasium.

Rule 18.3.2.2 states that the interrupted set is cancelled and replayed with the same team members and the same starting line-ups. What is the correct ruling on the use of the disqualified player in the third set as it was started again?

When such a set is resumed, neither disqualified nor expelled players are allowed to participate. Another player who was on the team and not in the starting line up must take his place.

Furthermore, all other sanctions which have been recorded on the scoresheet up to the point that the lights went out must be carried over into the new set.
