Hi all - More Volleyball news from the web. Regular visitors to the web site would have noticed that we have now started a UK directory of permanent out door volleyball courts (grass and beach). The list is a bit on the small side at the moment, so if you know of a public out door court, please let us know and we will add it to the list - thank you. Cheers - Dave Reece Dave.Reece@volleyballnewsletter.com |

| Bit of a feast of volleyball coming up in September, the timings and
dates are correct at time of going to press, some small changes may
happen, but it should be a good indicator of roughly what will be on.
British Eurosport viewer's should check listings for accurate timings. Best wishes, Simon Golding simon.golding@virgin.net A total of 36 matches / TV listings for September, please see our Reports Page for Simon's TV and Match guide. [Just in case you are not aware, "Eurosport" and "British Eurosport" are two separate TV channels, Eurosport is free but British Eurosports is part of the Sky TV subscription set up. Volleyball tends to be shown on Eurosport but often gets replaced on British Eurosport with some minor sport like Rugby or football, hence the need to double check the channel listings]. |

Grand Finale at Boscombe Open Beach Volleyball players from all over the UK and representatives from India, South Africa, Poland, Australia, France, Germany and the USA gathered at Boscombe for the Boscombe Grand Final. The event kick off on Saturday with pool play, where teams were put in pools of 4 with the top 2 going through to Sundays knockout phase. The weather was dry but windy, making it difficult playing conditions even for the most skilled of the players. In the mens competition the team from India had an added problem of jet lag having landed in London the evening before. In their pool were the Poole Grand Prix winners Hendrik Neubert and Albreht Glitz and 2003 Grand Prix Champions Aran Stolberg and Joe Mildred. After intense competition all three teams finished on 2 wins and 1 loss, but it was the Indians John Pradeep and Manoharan Arunachalam that narrowly failed to qualify on sets against countback. The Boscombe crowd warmed to John and Manoharan, probably the biggest team at the event, as they seemed to get better and better the more they got accustomed to the wind and cold weather, they normally play in 42 degrees Celsius with no wind. In the other three pools in the Grand Prix division were 6 individual winners of other events of the season, most of which were playing with new partners for this event. All these qualified but not without a few scary moments. Local team Simon Golding and 22 year old Greg Weaver from Poole also qualified, but to get to the semis they had to beat last weeks Grand Prix winners at Barry Island, Greg Gwinnett and Danny Wol. With both Danny and Simon coming back from injuries this was a difficult game to call, but in the end the 21 year old made his first semi final after winning the close fought battle 2 sets to 1. Getting in their way of the final was Hendrik and Albreht, but with their confidence high Simon and Greg took the first set. They went on to lose the second and narrowly lose the third to miss out on the final by the slimmest of margins. In the other semi final 21 year old Jody Gooding from Gloucester and American John Hedlund from London managed to beat Joe Mildred and Australian Aran Stolberg also from London to earn John his first Beach Volleyball final. In the final great blocking and hitting from John and Hendrik brought the best out of defenders Jody and Albreht. Their level of play was probably close to the highest ever seen in the UK. It was an immense final with Jody and John just clinching it in the third set, winning the game and the championships 2 sets to 1. In the women's competition local teams, Nicky Tinsley and Julia Stevens, and Jacqui Manning and Emma Hall both made it through to the semi finals. However only Nicky and Julia made it to the final after Jacqui and Emma lost after putting up a good battle against number one seeds Hedda Meijer and Poole Girl Debbie Spokes. In the final number 2 seeds Nicky and Julia took the first set, but like other events this season that has also seen this fixture, they tired in the second and third to allow Debbie and Hedda a clean sweep of all 5 events held at Boscombe and Bournemouth this summer. Players of the tournament went to Greg Weaver and Jacqui Manning for their best performances of their careers. Official Results:
The event is run by the Bournemouth Beach Volleyball Club , with help and support from Bournemouth Council, Parasol Skin Care, Mikasa, Just Add Water, Cool Water, The Neptune and Pinnacle Events and Marketing Services.

| GB declare themselves FIT for World Games The impoverished GB women's volleyball team found themselves in the money when Finance Industry Training Limited announced their support for the Students in their quest for glory at the World University Games in Daegu, Korea 21 - 31 August 2003. The team have been together in Loughborough for 5 weeks and we have been able to travel to Sweden and Belgium as part of our match preparation programme. Students win Castle in Car Park Sand Tourney The 2nd Annual Beach Volleyball tournament at the Cutters Wharf Pub on the River Lagan Belfast was won by Queen's University. Fielding 2 teams in the mixed event to boost sponsorship for the charity Childline Northern Ireland, it was the "A" combination of French Science Lecturer Fred Meunier, and Belfast students Salwah Hanizah and Neil Beckett joined by Belfast Ladies Angela McCarthy that played the most consistent volleyball losing only one set all day. The QUB "B" team were beaten 13-21 by the "A"s in an exceptionally good semi-final that entertained the large crowd. Rained off on Saturday, most of the teams returned on Sunday to the specially constructed sand courts in the Laganside pub car park to make a 12-team tournament. Teams from other pubs and clubs in greater Belfast joined in. Boy Band "UNITY" played excellent if simple volleyball to win all their preliminary matches including a 21-20 win over the QUB "A" team. Narrowly missing out against both teams were the staff from the Irish Pop Music "Big Buzz" magazine who finished third. Surprisingly, it was the "B" team for bottlewashers from the University area Parlour Bar who came through to the grand final by beating the UNITY boy band 21-19 in their semi-final after finishing runners-up to QUB "B" in the pools. The Bottlewashers simplistic tactics of fast return of service failed against the serving skills of Beckett and Salwah and the spiking of Meunier and McCarthy to go down 21-11. Organisers JJ Duff and Teresa Casey of Cutters Wharf and Karen Hamilton of Childline NI made the presentations to the Queen's and Parlour Bar teams and thanked Northern Ireland Volleyball Assn. for their expertise and referees and all the participants who had supported the charity CHILDLINE Northern Ireland to the tune of nearly £1000 pounds. Top Teams
There is great similitude in the way top teams are playing. Following data are referring to the world grand prix competition and in particular to the last two days of the competition. All teams in the final play with a single setter. When the setter is in the backrow the attack is either directed to the outside or opposite hitters on the aisles or the middle attacker in the center. When the setter is in the front line there are only two attack positions. In order to spread the attack over the whole length of the net the middle attacks either in first tempo in the center or backwards by the slide at position 2. For those teams who have the capabilities the number of attack positions is extended to backrow attack. In most teams this attack is performed by the opposite but the Russian team use their outside hitters. A distribution of the attack is presented in following table.
Although those data present only a biased sample of all data ( last two days of the competition ) the average correspond rather well to the average of the total competition. About 28.5 % of the attacks are preformed in first tempo while back row attack amounts to 7 % . The efficiencies of the type of attack are quite different, the first tempo attack appears to be most efficient with in particular low error percentage and highest success rate. The backrow has relatively high errors but those are compensated by high success rate too so that this attack type can be ranked before the more usual outside attack. The attack types were applied in different ways by the various team as can be shown from next table. The Chinese and Korean teams were using clearly more first tempo attack than the others, Italy and Russian applied more back row attack while the Koreans were not using the back row option at all.
In the following tables some more detailed data is given about efficiency of the first tempo attack of the different teams. Those data are based on only limited number of observations and ranking may therefore be not significant. The full report is available on our Reports Page. leo van hal leovh@wanadoo.fr |

Volleyball - Part of the new £28
Million Pounds EIS program Just brilliant! Our £28m sports heaven, is it Sydney, Paris, Barcelona? No, it's Attercliffe. The English Institute of Sport is exactly the kind of place that Britain, never mind Sheffield, thought it would never have. It's slick, expensive and absolutely brilliant. Polished wood floors stretch for hundreds of metres, its architectural support masts soar 50 metres into the air, there are jacuzzis and steam rooms, weight rooms and relaxing rooms, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, ice-therapy and a 2,000-seater athletics stadium almost lost in its five acre interior. There are specialist areas for volleyball, with state-of-the art timing devices, computerised heart-rate and oxygen monitors, doctors, coaches and nutritionists are on-hand to give treatment and advice. And pretty soon we'll all be able to have a go at most of the stuff - much of which was inherited good-as-new from the Commonwealth Games in Manchester to keep costs down. The £28m EIS Sheffield was originally designed and built to provide specialist training for our elite athletes with limited access for the public. But now, with lottery funding drying up as we all buy fewer tickets, the public are to get better access to help pay to run the place. Sport England, the body that distributes lottery funds to sports projects, wants Sheffield City Council and Sheffield International Venues to take over the £2m running of the place for the next five years creating around 40 extra jobs. "There will be income from the elite athletes funding and income from the public use of the centre and Sport England will make up any shortfall. For Sheffield International Venues to run the place will save money for Sport England and will allow the people of South Yorkshire more access. The EIS is the latest in a historic development of Sheffield as The City Of Sport and forms a multi-million pound corridor of world class facilities in the Don Valley alongside the new ice centre, Sheffield Arena and Don Valley Stadium.
The English Institute of Sport Sheffield will be officially opened by Sports Minister Richard Caborn on December 5. The EIS is expected to be up and running from September 29. |
