Olympic spots decided - FIVB

Brazil, Italy and Serbia and Montenegro all confirmed their tickets to the 2004 Athens Olympics on Saturday as the top three of the 2003 World Cup in Japan.

With Brazil beating USA, Italy defeating Japan and Serbia and Montenegro claiming one set before losing to France, the World, European and Olympic champions can not be displaced from the top three. Only the final order remains to be decided.

Following Brazil's 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 defeat of USA in Yoyogi Stadium, the South American champions and Italy confirmed their Olympic qualification as both teams were assured of a top three finish.

"I was anxious about it but each of the players did what they had to do, that was good," coach Bernardo Rezende said after the match. "Now, we are happy to qualify for the Athens Olympic Games but we should not be satisfied. Each player has his own points of improvement so we have to improve more for the Olympics. If we stop improving, other countries will over take us."

Serbia and Montenegro, needing only one set to guarantee a top three finish, did it tough but finally claimed their Olympic ticket in a 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19) loss to France. "We knew it would be difficult to play when you only needed to win one set," Serbia and Montenegro coach Ljubomir Travica said. "Players played to win just one set, not the game."

Meanwhile, Italy, knowing they had already qualified for the Olympics, had to beat Japan to keep the pressure on Brazil for the World Cup title and finally sealed a four-set victory 25-21, 27-25, 25-27, 25-20 in front of a packed Yoyogi Stadium. Now Italy needs to beat Serbia and Montenegro convincingly on Sunday and have Brazil lose to Japan to claim their second World Cup title.
In the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym, Canada stole vital ground on Venezuela in the standings when they won their clash 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 before Tunisia won a North African showdown beating Egypt 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-16. Korea beat China 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 in the last match of the day.

The final day of the 2003 Men's World Cup on Sunday sees USA play France in the Yoyogi Stadium followed by Serbia and Montenegro taking on Italy and Japan playing Brazil. In the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym, Venezuela plays Egypt before Tunisia takes on China and Korea plays Canada.

Current standings: Brazil 10 wins 0 losses, Italy 9-1, Serbia & Montenegro 8-2, France 7-3, USA 7-3, Korea 5-5, Canada 4-6, Japan 3-7, Venezuela 3-7, Tunisia 2-8, China 1-9, Egypt 1-9.

New EVA Address

The English Volleyball Association National Office have moved to Suite B, Loughborough Technology Centre, Epinal Way, Loughborough. LE11 3GE.

Jersey's unsung hero

BBC South West is holding its first ever regional sports awards and the winner of our Unsung Hero/Heroine category is being invited to an awards dinner in Plymouth on Sunday, December 7. They will then go onto the national Sports Awards programme on Sunday, December 14.

The award is looking to acknowledge a volunteer without whom the kit would not be clean, the pitch would not get mowed, the hall would not be ready to use. It is for a person who gives their time and energy to keep a local team or individual going, someone who most people have probably never heard of, but without them a local sporting activity might not happen.

A nominations from Jersey includes Morag Obarska - from St Saviour. Morag is a qualified physiotherapist who spends all her spare time helping sportsmen and women in the island. She carries her sponge bag and medical kit for rugby and football matches during the winter, and also gives her time to the island volleyball, netball, basketball, badminton, swimming, tennis and touch rugby teams. She also is physio to Jersey's Island Games team.

Looking for an odd volleyball item  - rsv

I coach a girl's high school volleyball team and I am hoping someone can direct me to a source for a particular item, because so far I have completely struck out. I am looking for a hand-held volleyball scorekeeper. Nothing fancy or electronic, just something that I can click to keep score during our practice scrimmages. Sort of like what a baseball umpire uses to keep track of balls and strikes, but of course the thing I am looking for would need to be able to score up to 25 for each of two teams.

Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Thanks for your time.

Scott ser_win_34695@yahoo.com

Why don't you just get two of those little clicker things they use in various places?  See http://www.keysan.com/ksu2752.htm

Haven't found a dual one, but here's a tripe/quintuple/septuple one - only thing is it looks desk mounted.

Exceptional TV ratings for first round

The first round of the FIVB World Cup of Women’s Volleyball has produced exceptional television ratings both in the Tokyo area and throughout the country, officials from the host broadcasters FUJI TV have confirmed.

Fuji officials reported a rating of 21.8 percent in the Tokyo area and 20 percent for the entire country. According to the officials, on a national level, one percentage point represents one million television households. On an international level, matches are being broadcast in USA, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Italy, Poland, Turkey, as well as Central and South American countries.

The Japanese national team won their first three matches of the 11-match series and the Volleyball loving Japanese public not only rewarded the host broadcaster, but also flocked in record crowds to the Yoyogi National Stadium in Tokyo to see the team defeat Argentina and Egypt (each 3-0) and arch rivals Korea (3-2). They now face Italy and USA in Round Two in the Rainbow Stadium in Nagoya, where ticket sales on the eve of the opening match were already 98 percent sold out, local officials confirmed to the FIVB on Wednesday. Second round matches are also being played at Sendai, the Site B city for Round Two.

The event, the first official Olympic qualifier, is also attracting widespread press coverage in the Japanese domestic print and electronic media. On an international level, mainstream international news agencies and prominent sports electronic media are leading the charge to bring stories of the World Cup to the world.

One of the biggest continents of international media in Japan to cover the World Cup is from China, reflecting that there is a huge expectation in the world’s most populous country for their national team, the ruling Asian champions, to do well in the tournament. The top three teams directly qualify for the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.

The Women’s World Cup continues to Sapporo and Toyoma for Round Three and both Site A and Site B matches conclude in the grand finale in Osaka, one of the heartlands of Japanese Volleyball.

2003 Men's World Cup in Japan

Inaugural World Cup win for Brazil

World champions Brazil finished an excellent 2003 by claiming their first World Cup title here on Sunday and finished the tournament in style with their 11th successive victory, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 over Japan in Yoyogi Stadium on Sunday.

With the South Americans already confirmed as gold medalists after Italy had lost to Serbia and Montenegro earlier in the day, Bernardo Rezende's men just had to complete the formalities against Japan and did so in great artistic style to silence the 12,000 screaming local fans and walk away with the honour of having won the World League, the South American championship and the World Cup in the same year.

Yamamoto scoops top individual prize, Japan's Takahiro Yamamoto was awarded the Best Scorer and M.V.P. award for the 2003 World Cup as the best players of the tournament were acknowledged by the International Volleyball Federation on Sunday with the presentation of individual awards.

The Japanese wing spiker's 227 points outscored Ivan Miljkovic from Serbia and Montenegro by nine points and was made all the more impressive since Japan only recorded three victories from their 11 matches.

The other individual awards saw Giovane from the World Cup champions Brazil receive the Best Spiker prize, Andrija Geric from Serbia and Montenegro the Best Blocker, Italy's Andrea Sartoretti the Best Server while the Best Libero award went to Sergio from Brazil and Serbia and Montenegro's Nikola Grbic was the Best Setter.

2003 Men's World Cup player awards
Best Scorer & M.V.P - Takahiro Yamamoto JPN No 14
Best Spiker - Giovane BRA No 3
Best Blocker - Andrija Geric SCG No 12
Best Server - Andrea Sartoretti ITA No 7
Best Setter - Nikola Grbic SCG No 9
Best Libero - Sergio BRA No 10

A final award went to Japanese setter Daisuke Usami as the Most Spectacular Player. Although Usami topped the player statistics for Setters, the World Cup Control Committee used the power vested in it by the FIVB rules and regulations to award the prize to Grbic on the basis of overall performance.

Beach Volleyball

Dear Dave, I send you the citations and the abstracts of beach volleyball articles. Please include the journals and the citations on the volleyball newsletter.

Giatsis, G., & Tzetzis, G. (2003). Comparison of performance for winning and losing beach volleyball teams on different court dimensions. International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport, 3, 65-74.

http://ninetta.ingentaselect.com/vl=887446/cl=51/nw=1/rpsv/cw/uwic/14748185/contp1.htm

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the performance between winning and losing teams in Beach Volleyball (BV) matches on courts of new (8x8m) and old dimensions (9x9m) at the side out phase. Side out in BV means the change of the right to serve Nine semifinals and seven finals of the Hellenic BV Championship taking place at an 8x8m and 9x9m court were video-recorded using a camera. 34 sets and 1466 phases were recorded and the following technical skills were analyzed: a) serve b) reception c) attack. In addition, attack was divided into two categories according to the type of the attack: a) spikes and b) shots. The term effectiveness was established by the ratio determining the total kills minus total errors divided by total attempts. Independent samples t-test was used in order to compare the above mentioned parameters between the winning (W) and losing (L) teams at these two different court dime! nsions (8x8, 9x9). Significant differences were found, t(16) = 3.06, p< .01), in the attack efficiency (MW8x8 = .476, SD = .086, ML8x8 = .315, SD = .131), (t(18) = 2.44, p< .05), in the spike efficiency (MW8x8 = .479, SD = .162, ML8x8 = .254, SD = .236), in the percentage of errors (MW8x8 = .139, SD = .052, ML8x8 = .204, SD = .077), (t (18) = 2.21, p< .05), in the percentage of receptions errors (ML9x9 = .09, SD = .043, MW9x9= .032, SD = .029), t(10) = 2.73, p< .05) and in reception (MW 9x9 = 0.96, SD = 0.03, ML9x9 = 0.90, SD = 0.05), (t(10) = 2.74, p< 0.05). Winning and losing teams used the spikes and shots at approximately the same rate. In conclusion, different skills performance contributed to winning the match after the reduction in court dimensions. On the 8x8, the winners had better attack efficiency and fewer errors, while on the 9x9 they had better reception.

Giatsis, G. (2003). The effect of changing the rules on score fluctuation and match duration in the FIVB women's beach volleyball. International Journal of Performance Analysis in Sport, 3, 57-64.

http://iris.ingentaselect.com/vl=1916954/cl=41/nw=1/rpsv/cw/uwic/14748185/contp1.htm

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between the two scoring systems, Rally Scoring (RS) and Side Out scoring (SO), in the duration and the score fluctuation of matches in Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) Women's Beach Volleyball (BV). In this research the duration and the points of 1253 matches were recorded from 22 tournaments of the FIVB Women's BV World Tour. The 2000 FIVB tournaments followed the SO system and the 2001 FIVB followed the RS system. Since the 2001 FIVB was played in 2 winning sets, it was divided in two subgroups concerning the final score (RS2-0 and RS2-1). The 2000 FIVB was played in a single set of 15 points. The one way ANOVA indicated that there were significant differences (F(3,1835) = 268.091, p< .001) in total duration of matches between the tournaments. The Post Hoc Scheffe indicated significant differences between t! he SO (M = 35.5, SD = 9.9 min) and the RS (M = 41.6, SD = 10.2 min), the SO and the RS2-1 (M = 53.8, SD = 7.2 min). In SO matches the losers won (M = 8.1, SD = 3.7 points), while in the RS mean match phases were (M= 83.5, SD = 17.4). 46.4% and 12.7% of the matches included a set with the minimum difference of points in the RS and SO respectively. In conclusion, RS increased match duration due to the third set and the matches were more wavering and spectacular as more sets finished with the minimum difference of points. However, the physical demands of the game were increased due to the greater number of rallies.

Sincerly, George Giatsis

'Bed Sheet' volleyball - rsv

When I was in college we ran a tournament called 'Bed Sheet' volleyball. It was played indoors with 6 players on each side. We covered the net from the top (men's height) to the floor with bed sheets so you couldn't see what was going on. No jump serves or contacts above the net by leaving your feet were allowed. Was always a good time.

Active Ankle vs. Bauerfiend MalleoLoc  - rsv

I'm looking into get a pair 'cause I know it's only a matter of time before I blow an ankle and I'd like to hear opinions about both types.

I spoke with a girl that plays club at my gym that has a new set of MalleoLocs and has worn Active Ankles before. She loves the MalleoLocs but I'm sure there are people here that might have a more informed opinion of them.

Thanks for any help.
Mike Stevens bigmike@bigmikes.org

Hi Mike, I wear Active Ankle T2 on both feet and I am really happy with them. Before I had the older ones (T1) and I wasn't really satisfied with them cause the felt kinda alien on my feet. You'll just have to try them out, I've heard a lot of bad press about those kind of supports because it will (supposingly) weaken your muscles and tendons over time. I don't know about that but that might be true. I cannot comment about MalleoLocs because I didn't try them yet.
Simon Bühler mail@simon-buehler.de

Other options might be the Mueller ATF or the Swede-O Ankle Loc. I used an ATF before. It's really light, and comes in specific right or left foot versions, which helps with the fit. http://www.muellersportsmed.com/atfanklebrace.htm / http://www.swedeo.com/products.htm
