Bed Sheet Volleyball

Following an item in the last newsletter on Bed sheet Volleyball, our club pick up on the idea for their annual Christmas club tournament. Over all it was an interesting event, we kept to the four-a-side format and hence we banned setting over the net and any play above the height of the net.

Calling for the ball or any noise created by the attacking team soon disappeared, as it gave away the position of the ball, this unfortunately took away some of the atmosphere of the event as teams began to us stealth tactics. We also noticed that when teams received serve, they were reluctant to take up a low receive position, by standing more upright, they could pick up the flight of the ball sooner.

Other than that, it was an interesting event and one which we will be repeating again. For the technically minded, it took four double sheets to cover the net area, held on by clothes pegs and masking tape used to join the sheets together.

NEWS ITEMS
McGivern's teen spirit puts Icelanders on the rocks

Mark McGivern helped Scotland book their place in the finals of European Volleyball Championship C Division finals by easing them through their qualifying group at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall. The teenager, playing in his first major tournament for Scotland, was given a starting place in the side’s make-or-break match with Iceland. McGivern, arguably the most-improved player in Scotland in the past 12 months, did not let the team down and slotted in well as the Scots won through 25-16, 26-24, 25-11.

"Mark has come on a lot in recent weeks and has improved through working with coach Colin McGinlay at Team Fife," said Scotland coach Tommy Dowens. "He is definitely one for the future and I’ve no doubt he will be a big player for us." He was joined on court in the second set by City of Edinburgh’s Paul Glissov, who made a couple of important hits as Iceland threatened to take the set at 24-21. But some superb serving from Kilmarnock’s Stuart Edgar pulled Scotland through as they bounced back from Saturday’s shock defeat by the Faroes 25-20, 25-23, 25-18.

Bon Accord’s Stevie Milne was brought in to replace Glasgow Ragazzi veteran Kenny Milne at the key setter position and the move paid dividends. The Faroes went on to be surprise winners of the tournament as they edged out Luxembourg in their final match 25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 19-25, 15-11 to complete their programme unbeaten, although it was an experienced side with four of their players currently playing in the Danish First Division and one in Norway’s top league. Scotland now advance to the finals in Luxembourg in June with the aim of winning back a place in the B Division.

Scotland lost in the women’s international against England 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 and Team Falkirk College’s Mel Coutts played a starring role as England captain.

I have put pictures of the inaugural Premier games held at Leicester Cannons on 21st December 2003 on:
http://www.mcgugan.nildram.co.uk/volleyball/PremierLeicester/index.htm
I would like to thank the synchronized sitting dancing scorers for their contribution to the event (see picture). These pictures have been reduced and compressed (typically they are 10MB each). There a quite a lot of sequence shots here. The camera can take pictures at a rate of 8 a second so most of the sequences are less than 2 seconds long. For the technical the first match was light mainly by the sun but this rapidly faded and by the third match the only lighting was from the sports hall lights.

WORLD’S STRONGEST CLUB COMPETITION READY FOR ACTION
Indesit European Champions’ League 2003-2004

For the fourth consecutive season, the Indesit European Champions’ League will feature the strongest club teams in the world. Starting on Tuesday, the twenty best men’s formations of the world’s leading volleyball continent will start their campaign in the 2003-2004 Indesit European Champions’ League.

From December till March, all eyes will be on the Indesit European Champions’ League. In these four months, the leading European club teams will fight for the ultimate title. The men’s participants finished their preparations successfully and are ready for action. The twenty teams are drawn in five pools of four teams each and will play a double round robin pool phase and the first matches are scheduled for Tuesday 9, Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 December.

In Pool A, Sisley TREVISO from Italy is the clear favorite. The Northern Italian team already booked lots of successes in the different European Cup Competitions, but was drawn in a difficult group. Previous Final Four contestant Olympiakos PIRAEUS (GRE) and former Top Teams Cup winner Pamapol AZS CZESTOCHOWA (POL) are strong opponents. German champion SCC BERLIN completes this pool.

‘The matches in the pool play of the Indesit European Champions’ League will be very tough for us,’ Sisley TREVISO’s manager Bruno da Re analyzed. ‘All our opponents are very strong, so each match will be important.’

In Pool B, 2000/’01 winner PARIS Volley from France is the top seed. Long time participants Unicaja ALMERIA (ESP) and Knack ROESELARE (BEL) were also drawn in this group. Indesit European Champions’ League rookie Crvena Zvezda BEOGRAD (SCG) is the fourth team in Pool B.

Defending Champion LOKOMOTIV BELGOROD (RUS) will start to defend the title in Pool C. With 2001/’02 winner Lube MACERATA (ITA) as one of the opponents, it will be a hard job for the Russian Rockets. Furthermore, Iraklis THESSALONIKI (GRE) and Dukla LIBEREC (CZE) are strong opponents too.

Russian newcomer Iskra ODINTSOVO (RUS) looks to be the strongest team in Pool D. TOURS VB from France can be an outsider in this team. ESS Falck PARNU (EST) is the first ever participant from the Baltic countries in the Indesit European Champions’ League and is the big unknown team. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (GER) will also play in Pool D.

Whereas it is impossible to predict which team will be the strongest in Pool E. Mostostal-Azoty KEDZIERZYN from Poland reached the Final Four in the previous two seasons and is the strongest team on paper. Noliko MAASEIK (BEL) will arrange some firework too, as one of the few teams that participated in all four editions of the Indesit European Champions’ League. Levski Siconco SOFIA (BUL) and Aon hotVolleys VIENNA (AUT) are also famous participants in this competition. ‘All these teams made great results in the previous Indesit European Champions’ Leagues,’ Noliko MAASEIK manager Rene Corstjens said.

The first two legs of the men’s Indesit European Champions’ League are scheduled in December. The women’s Indesit European Champions’ League, in which 15 teams will participate in five pools of three, starts in the middle of January. The League Round of both the men’s and women’s competition will come to a conclusion at the beginning of February 2004. The best six teams in each gender will play play-off matches. The winners of these clashes will get qualified for the Final Four.

The Final Four of the Women’s Indesit European Champions’ League will take place in Tenerife, Spain on 20 and 21 March 2004. The final event of the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League will be held in Belgorod, Russia on 27 and 28 March 2004. The hosts of the Final Fours are automatically qualified for these events.

This competition is not only a spectator magnet, but enjoys also an increasing interest from international sponsors. For the third year in a row, INDESIT is the title sponsor of this event and the company CHAMPION reconfirmed its option already in the early stages. The CEV found in Austrian Airlines a new partner. Austrian Airlines, member of the Star Alliance, will be the “Official Carrier” of the Confédération Européenne de Volleyball, being also the National Partner of the Club of AON hotVolleys Vienna, as well as sponsor of the Top Teams Cups and CEV Cups. Another newcomer in the Indesit Champions League will be also the company Kerakoll from Italy.

Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League. Matches during first leg (9-11 December):

Pool A:
SCC BERLIN (GER) – Pamapol AZS CZESTOCHOWA (POL)
Olympiakos PIRAEUS (GRE) – Sisley TREVISO (ITA)

Pool B:
PARIS Volley (FRA) – Crvena Zvezda BEOGRAD (SCG)
Unicaja ALMERIA (ESP) – Knack ROESELARE (BEL)

Southern visitors took the honours in this weekend's 16th annual Blockbusters Volleyball Blitz Club tournament in the Fermanagh Lakeland Forum Enniskillen.
Santry of Dublin having beaten Belfast's Northern Ladies in the semi-final were too steady and dispatched East Coast Cruisers from Wicklow 3-0 in the main competition final but ECC's Olive Rossiter was named female MVP.

The men's final saw a powerful display by Trinity College Dublin who beat Aer Lingus 3-0 and Trinity's Hugh Nohilly was named MVP. In an exciting semi final Aer Lingus had beaten the Northern Sharks, the Northern Ireland International training squad who play in their first European championship tournament at the end of the year in Andorra.

Aer Lingus IIs won the men's Plate beating University College Dublin and Artane Redcats of Dublin beat Derry's Maiden City Memories for the women's Plate.
In all 54 matches, most time limited by Blitz rules although final round matches were not against the clock, were played over the weekend by 10 men's and ten women's teams. Further details and early booking for 2004 contact Sandra Parker on busterssec@supanet.com

World Cup Figures

The world cup 2003 competition has been clearly won by Brazil. In the next table are presented some performance characteristics.

Csuc to zero error corrected attack result
Suc/set Killing blocks
Service results % Ace/% Error
% Exc in reception and digging by Libero

It is shown that there is in near all play compartments a great difference between the leading teams and the teams ranked at the bottom. Attack and block are very much associated with ranking while service results and libero performance are less clearly related.

Brazil and Italy are near a class part with excellent figures for attack and block and leading performance with serve and libero. There is a next cluster of teams with the USA Serbia/Mont and France. The Serbs show less good serving and libero performance. The USA show overall good performance in spite of the defeat against Serbia and Mont.

Canada and Venezuela show similar performance in attack and block with clearly less good results for Venezuelan serving and libero performance.

The three Asian teams show similar performance with Japan showing more aces in services but also clearly more errors. The ranking of Korea is exceptional as viewed from general performance. The Koreans won as a surprise against all expectation the match against France.

Finally the North African teams show similar but poor performance in all play compartments. The Olympic background may justify a large continental participation for the quality of the tournament however the participation of those teams is to be reconsidered.
