PHOTOS OF INTEREST

On Court Advertising
Not something we see in the UK but in some domestic European leagues, they take every opportunity to get maximum TV exposure for their sponsors adverts.

Shirt and banner advertising around the court is common practice in most sports and they still leaves plenty of space on the screen to watch the game.

In some counties, it seems to be the practice to fill the venue (and hence the TV screen) with adverts and play the match on and in front of them. In this match, only the front court area was left free from adverts.

The above photos are from this weekends Polish league match between Pamapol Azs and Mostostal Azoty, an excellent five set match. You can keep up to date with the Polish volleyball scene (Saturdays 1-3pm) on channel 4 Nazywo, a free satellite channel available in the UK on Eutelsat and on some cable systems.

DUBS TAKE VARSITIES DOUBLE

University College Dublin scored a famous double in the weekend Irish Intervaristies Volleyball Championships at the University of Ulster Jordanstown.
UCD beast Queen's University Belfast 3-1 in the men's final; although QUB's David Hamilton won the Best Attacker award and Trinity's Neil Harmon took the
Best Setter/ Passer title. The UCD Women beat University College Cork 3-1 and Dublin City University beat University Limerick 2-0 to take the consolation Plate Final.

In the Men's Plate finals, the University of Ulster's Coleraine team was the surprise winner 2-1 beating holders UCC. The University of Ulster gave a special Tournament Award to their captain and organiser Nick Wright a boost ahead of his leading Northern Ireland into the European Senior Men's Championships qualifiers in Andorra after Christmas.

The Craigavon Aztecs Club held a very successful mixed (male/female) Christmas tournament at the weekend. The competition, comprising 7 teams from Queen's University, Ards, Lisburn and the Craigavon area, was played in good spirit and provided many hard fought, close matches. In the Main competition final the two Aztecs teams went head to head. Portadown settled best and and took the final 2-0.

Off Court Ball Movement Off Putting?  - rsv

I was watching the woman's Olympic qualifying today and noticed that balls were rolled down near the sidelines during rallies. Wouldn't this put the players off. When I was watching today a player was diving for a ball at the same time as a ball rolled past nearby. If I had seen that ball out of the corner of my eye I think I would have been a little distracted. Can't they find another way?

Strangiato nochance@youmustbejoking.com

No. The game requires a high level of concentration just to play the ball. I usually couldn't tell you if Charlize Theron walked by in the nude during a play (and this happens sometimes - I wish). This is why you always hear "ball on!" when a ball rolls onto the court - no one's looking for it, and they're all usually looking up.

It's intriguing how basketball players couldn't care less when a volleyball rolls into their game from the next court in the open gym. Either they just don't care or they're looking down much of the time and can see the thing.

Raptor me@attbi.com

Ball retrievers are typically instructed to try to transfer balls only during dead ball time if possible. However, in televised matches, dead ball time is something that (for production reasons) everyone attempts to keep to a bare minimum. Now, for that goal to occur, the ball retrievers have to make sure there's at least one ball at each end of the court to feed to the next server immediately after the prior rally ends. So there you have a bit of a catch 22. Most facilities are big enough for this transfer to occur a safe distance from the court boundaries, otherwise you do the best you can.

And typically ball retrievers are volunteers, so you don't always have the benefits of people who have a lot of experience at it.

Best Regards, Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

While watching the NCAA Final Four, we noticed the "ball persons" were occasionally rolling the balls near or onto the court. This didn't appear to distract the players but it did lead to delaying the service call from the ref a few times each match.

2012 Olympics bid

London lays out its venues, transport and finance plans, most of London's venues are expected to be located in the east of the city. The hub of the games would be in a 500-acre tract of parkland in the Lower Lea Valley stretching from Hackney Marshes to the river Thames. London has also listened to warnings from the International Olympic Committee not to miss the chance to hold some events in the city centre - hence the beach volleyball planned for St James' Park.

In May 2003 Cabinet Minister Tessa Jowell announced the Government would “back London to the hilt” and set aside £2.375 billion to pay for the staging of the Games. Regeneration could create around 40,000 jobs, 30,000 homes and 1,000 businesses while transforming large swathes of contaminated and derelict land. The funding of the Games will be divided between London council tax payers, the Lottery and the London Development Agency. The cost of the bid itself is put at £30m, which will be met by business.

The Olympic bid board says the £2.3 billion original cost, which is after revenue from television rights and sponsorship, has not increased significantly. The final decision on who will host the Games will be made by the IOC’s 128 members meet in Singapore in July 2005.

24 teams confirmed to contest eight Olympic vacancies

Following the conclusion of the eight Continental Olympic Qualifying tournaments on the weekend where USA (NORCECA Men), the Dominican Republic (South America Women), Argentina (South American Men), Russia (Europe Men), Germany (Europe Women), Tunisia (Africa Men), Kenya (Africa Women) and Cuba (NORCECA Women) have all qualified for the Athens Olympics in August, the 24 teams left to chase eight Olympic tickets across four World Olympic Qualifying tournaments in Japan, Portugal and Spain have now been determined.

Eight teams will play in the women's World Olympic Qualification tournament in Japan (May 8-16, 2004), which also doubles as the Asian Continental Olympic Qualification tournament, with the hosts being joined by three Asian teams Korea, Thailand and Chinese Taipei and four non-Asian sides being the highest ranked non-qualified teams as per the FIVB World Rankings – Italy and Russia from Europe and Argentina from South America and NORCECA’s Puerto Rico.

Four teams will qualify for Athens 2004 from this tournament with the winner being joined by the best Asian team (as the Continental winner) and the best and second best ranked teams after the winner.

The three men's World Olympic Qualification tournaments will consist of eight teams playing in Japan (May 22-30), in what will also be the Asian Continental Olympic Qualification tournament, with the hosts entertaining four Asian teams - Korea, China, Iran, Australia – plus three additional non-Asian teams.

Four more teams will play in Spain (May 28-30) and another four in Portugal (May 21-23) with the organizers being joined by three teams each.

The nine sides to compete in Japan, Spain or Portugal - France, Poland, the Netherlands, Canada, Cuba, Venezuela, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Chinese Taipei – have qualified as the highest ranked non-qualified teams as per the FIVB World Rankings, but their destination will be determined by a Drawing of Lots ceremony held in Japan in late February.

Four Olympic tickets are available across the three men’s tournaments with the three winners plus the best Asian side at the Japanese tournament all booking their spots for Athens in August.

Nigerian Volleyballers Blame Umpire and poor travel arrangements for Loss of Olympic Ticket

Nigerian women's volleyball team have ascribed their inability to win the African Women Volleyball Championship in Nairobi, Kenya, to bad officiating. The volleyballers further hinted that officiating became worse when they played against the host team, Kenya. The players said the organisers did not make good travel arrangement for the Nigerian delegation.

"We arrived in Nairobi Airport without any reception from the organisers. We were stranded for three hours before our coach moved to secure an hotel for us," he said. They explained that they were not allocated a training venue and had to go around town in public transport. They also lamented the ill-treatment they've suffered in the hands of NVBF since they returned from the championship. "Since we arrived back in Nigeria, we've been stranded, as we do not have any money to go back to our bases," the players said.
