MINI VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004

The 2004 SW Mini Volleyball Championships attracted 30 teams to the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston super Mare on March 27th. Many of the teams had taken part in the winter Grand Prix series, but it was good to see increased entries from the Plymouth area for these official championships.

The standard of play was high and it is always good to see how the quality of matches improves as you walk down the hall from the U12 sections, where 3 touches are not always the norm, to the U14 competitions where the whole range of 3 touch attacks, hitting, blocking and powerful serves.

The winners and runners up trophies were shared by seven different schools and clubs, which shows the depth of junior volleyball in the region. Top of the pile were Melksham with four trophies (two of them winners) followed by Portman Wessex and Lipson each with two trophies. Only two teams remained unbeaten throughout the day - Portman Wessex in the U13 boys and Lipson in the U14 boys.

The players are to be complimented on the way that they approached the day - lots of good, hard and fair competition, sensibly refereed by the youngsters them selves.

We look forward to these young players developing into SW squad members and challenging for national honours in U15 and U16 championships in years to come.

Wyvern Royals

Team of the week or rather club of the week, is Wyvern Volleyball Club from Worcester. At present, the Club puts forward two teams to play representative volleyball in the Hereford & Worcester League. A Men's team and a ‘Royal’ team - a team of Juniors predominately from the Royal Grammar School.

Wyvern Volleyball Club has existed since the mid 1980s and currently train at the Royal Grammar School on Tuesday evenings, between 8pm and 10pm. British Universities Sports Association Volleyball Finals 2004

Over one hundred and fifty teams entered the British Universities Volleyball Championships. The top eight men and women's teams qualified for the Finals weekend at Loughborough University having played eleven matches to get there. Another five would see the Champions crowned.

One of the pluses of university volleyball is the influx of overseas players, who bring high technical skill - and passion for the game. Seventeen different nationalities joined players from the four Home Countries, including many junior and senior internationalists, to create a feast of volleyball styles and attitudes.

The teams played in round robin pools of four, with the top two meeting in cross over semi finals. Oxford men were comfortable in topping their group, dropping only one set to Sheffield. Defending Champions Newcastle were runners up, with a very experienced Bournemouth side, unexpectedly losing every game to finish fourth. In the other pool Sheffield Hallam, with their plethora of division one and international players came out top, despite struggling for consistent rhythm. Nottingham pushed Hallam all the way in the pool game, losing narrowly in the deciding set to finish runners up.

Loughborough women started the defence of their crown by topping their pool, with Edinburgh runners up having taken a set off the champions. Oxford women were impressive in being unbeaten in their pool with Manchester taking the runners up spot. Semi finals saw the four triumphant teams significantly raising their games. Nottingham men made a blistering start with Maurizio Catucci in sparkling hitting form to race to a ten point lead over Oxford, winning the set comfortably. The second set was fiercely contested with Nottingham winning 25-23. Hallam were very dominant against Newcastle, controlling the net in defence.

Edinburgh women played a very contained and controlled game to outplay Oxford. Loughborough women had a much tougher task against Manchester, but overcame the onslaught in straight sets. The women's final was tight until Loughborough put together a run of ten serves to break the Edinburgh resolve in the first set. Nip and tuck in the second with Virr and Glozeckaite putting in big hits for Loughborough but being countered by great defence by Hildebrand and Stronach. Loughborough kept their nerve to win 26-24 to retain the title.

The men's final was compelling. High intensity, power hitting, high energy defence, it had it all. Nottingham went off at great pace with Chris Anderson and Catucci again providing the firepower to open a 17-10 lead. Hallam dug deep with some superb defence enabling them to chip away at the lead. Ward, Kent and Bussey all made big hits to see Hallam home 25-23.

The disappointment of losing their early lead seemed to affect Nottingham who slipped behind at the start of the second set. But they fought back to draw level at 22 all. Points were traded until Anderson was just long with a back court hit to hand Hallam the title.

London, debutants in BUSA volleyball competitions this year won both the Shield events. The men beat Loughborough 3-2 in a very closely contested final and London women beat Birmingham 3-1 to make it a double celebration.

Four New Volleyball Court for Oldham

Hathershaw Technology College received a long-awaited financial boost, the college has received a £275,000 grant for a new netball centre, which will be home to local sports groups as well as the school’s own teams. The centre will replace the former Hathershaw sports complex which was forced to close, in 2002, leaving many local sports groups homeless.

Head teacher David Ashley said: “I am delighted this project has finally been realised. “It will be a huge asset to my students and the community. “This has been a project that has taken a great deal of partnership working, for which I am very grateful.” Excavation work has begun on the site, which will feature six floodlit netball courts, four of which will be used for other sports, including volleyball.

Plans were first made seven years ago but had to be resubmitted several times after bodies which could provide funding changed their names and funding arrangements.
