NORTHERN IRELAND FOURTH IN HOLLAND

Northern Ireland finished fourth at the weekend International Volleyball tournament at Breda in the Netherlands. Success came to new NIVA Coach Gerry Ford and his team on their first outing on continental Europe recording historic wins of top club sides.
DE BURGST ALL STARS, recently promoted to the Dutch semi professional Division 2, lost a thrilling 5 setter to their Ulster visitors with Nick Wright (UUJ) and Mark Robinson (Craigavon Aztecs) hitting superbly well of the passes of Aztecs' Chris Grant to come from behind and win 3-2.

GELVOC HOOGSTRATEN of Belgium was beaten 3-1 but the Ulstermen ran into a series of injuries as they pushed themselves to heights never reached before playing at this level. Captain Nick Wright was sidelined and the tired NIVA team played on and finished fourth behind event winners GOIRLE who beat Premier Dutch professional league compatriots DE BURGST PREMIER in the final.

TEAM of the WEEK
A clean sweep for Exeter based teams at this years South West Championships, which also includes South Wales and the Channel Islands.

Despite the country bathing in glorious weather last weekend, it was time well spent indoors for the Devon Women's National League team as they took the title of Ladies South West Champions for 2004 and Exeter Heat took the men's title at the Kitto Centre in Plymouth.

The win caps a good 2003/2004 season for the Devon Women team after their promotion to the English Volleyball Association's Prosport National League Division 2, where they finished a respectable 7th (out of 12) which ranks them 17th in the Country.

More Powers to the President and £ 4 Million Pounds in Commission

A new code of conduct was approved by the international volleyball federation Thursday that gives more power to its president and prohibits legal challenges to his authority. The FIVB also prohibited members from making public remarks that could be construed as damaging to president Ruben Acosta and the organization's image. The federation approved a new rule giving Acosta the authority to "take all actions and/or decisions including disciplinary actions" when the executive committee or board are not in session.

The code was approved by a show of hands by all but a few of the 192 delegates, officials said. Exact figures were not available. Delegate Chris Schacht of Australia, who voted against the code, said he was "concerned that no president, no individual in a voluntary organization such as FIVB should have the power to suspend." Schacht said he also feared the new rules could be unworkable because some countries have constitutions which enshrine legal challenges as a right.

The FIVB board of administration also upheld its policy of offering a commission of up to 10 percent to any member, including Acosta, who secures sponsorship or TV rights deals for the federation. Acosta, who gets no salary as president, has confirmed he received $6.4 million from contracts in 2000.

Acosta said the FIVB enacted the policy in 1990 to avoid dealing with marketing agencies, which take up to 40 percent of the cut.
