NEWS ITEMS

Exeter Volleyball Festival
All photos by Jerry Fardon jerryfardon@blueyonder.co.uk more on our web site
Coaver lawn was bathed in sunshine throughout the weekend as around 300 players took part in the this years Exeter Festival of volleyball.  The weekend was a sell-out yet again, with Fun 4's, Coaver Open and the evening party all full to brimming, despite increasing the capacity by squeezing in a few more teams.

Teams traveled from far and wide to join in the fun, but it was KRUSHALOT who emerged triumphant in Saturdays FUN 4's handicapped event and took home volleyballs, pump and the illustrious silverware.  This was their first ever tournament but they were able to sweep through the pools to make it to the cup. Krushalot were so enthused by the win that they refused to leave the court for a shower, food or presentations it is rumored that they stayed on court and practiced all night long (and may still be out there now).

Plate Winners Wonford Betablockers

Sundays Coaver Open saw 60+ teams competing on Coaver lawn despite the ravages of the previous nights party.  The final saw two very good sides evenly matched and playing some top quality volleyball. BRISTOL VBC won it 29-24, quite a feat considering that they were not even entered in the tournament until the Friday before the event. They are now the Denmark of volleyball, gaining entry at the expense of Blackbrook who were forced to pull out at the last minute !

In the Plate Wonford Betablockers beat the DB's from Stroud 26-17, after seeing off WVC Vikings in the quarter finals and WVC Wanderers in the semis. In the Bowl event Nutters beat Yeovil 25-23.
In the Juniors Kings Batty Boys won the Under 18's, with South West Pumas winning the Under 16's event. This was no mean feat given the number of teams entered and they did it after beating SW Cougars in the semi finals. The other losing semi finalists were SW tigers. Losing quarter finalists were SW Jags and SW Lions, clearly a strong contingent from the SW squad.

The Under 14's final was an all Panthers event with Panthers C beating fellow team mates Panthers D in a closely contested final. Panthers C were able to maintain there 100% win rate throughout the event.

The Under 12's event was won by local team Kings Stars with Triple X taking runners up spot.

Congratulations to the successful teams and thanks to all those who came and participated, to the band of helpers who set up and cleared away, particularly to Neil Williams and Julia Chiverton, without whom the event would not have been the success it was. Also thanks to all the party goers, especially those party animals from Stroud who got everybody raving to the Dogz !

Antennas

I am about to order new antenna for my high school program. Can I have some opinions on what is the best way to go? There are at least three different kinds and I want to know what you think is best for doing the job (staying in place) and best for durability. Velcro? Clip On? Screw On (International)?

Dan danclotfelter@yahoo.com

This may be more than you want to know about antennae, but here goes:

By far the most common among colleges are the screw-tightened clamp-on's. They work the best, and are my preference. They are not free of annoyances, though: a) clue-impaired facility workers don't "get" how they work and invariably turn things the wrong way, turn them too tight, and sometimes manage to break them with overtension, and b) the rubber bottom cap has a tendency to pop off and expose a rather dangerous cotter pin. As an official, this is why I must carry white athletic tape. On a final note, if these are used, make sure your net includes a lower net cable or lower net rope. These don't work well at all unless the net you have has such, because the lower clamp has to have something round inside the netsleeve to clamp around.

The velcro strap/sleeve ones aren't bad, but depending on the net, it's sometimes hard to get them perpendicular. There's a little "slop" involved since near the top of the sleeve, there isn't anything holding the straps together because that's where the velcro stops and the upper net tape is. Ironically, the first picture I found on the net demonstrates this wonderfully.

The Sure-Grip clamp ones are kinda crufty, in my opinion: They have a cheap look/feel to them, and also you need to be either very tall or have a chair around in order to adjust them if they get knocked out during play.

Finally I see that tie-on sleeved antennas are available. Haven't actually used these or seen em anywhere, but they likely suffer the same problem as the SureGrip ones--namely you have to be on a chair to adjust the top fastener to make sure the antenna is aligned with the outer edge of the sideline.

Best Regards, Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org

I have used velcro and some varient of screw on and I think the screw on is a lot better. The velcro ones I used needed to be taped to keep them in place and the velcro wears out. The screw on ones should last until somebody breaks them.

Bruno Wolff III bruno@wolff.to

These are the antennae I've played with most. My experiences are:
- They work well, stay straight and can take a hit
- I'm "clue-impaired" -- I have a hard time getting them on right
- An exposed cotter pin left a gash in my back once, and ripped my shirt another time

China v U.S.A will be the feature women’s match on the opening day of the Olympic Games Volleyball competition in Athens, Greece following the Drawing of Lots ceremony held at the ATHOC headquarters here on Monday.

2006 World Championships

The International Volleyball Federation is pleased to announce that the 2006 World Championships will be the biggest World Volleyball Championships ever contested in FIVB history with an exceptional number of 165 teams (93 men’s and 72 women’s teams) already registered with eight days remaining until the late entry deadline of June 18. All five Confederations represented as follows: Twenty three teams from Africa, 33 from Asia, 57 from Europe, 39 from Norceca and 13 from South America. The previous highest entry list was 118 at the 2002 World Championships.

The drawing of lots ceremony will be held in the inspirational setting of Rome, Italy on July 15, on the eve of the 2004 World League finals.

The number of entries is a reflection of the status of this tournament, FIVB President Dr Rubén Acosta said. The World Championships is one of the most revered titles in international Volleyball and is a symbol of the global participation in our sport.

The 2006 World Championships will see national teams from nearly 100 countries competing in a record number of first and second round tournaments lasting 12 months.

The Drawing of Lots will confirm the distribution of teams within each Confederation for the opening rounds of the 2006 World Championships, which will determine who progresses to the final round of 24 teams each for men and women for a total of 48 teams in Japan.

As hosts, the Japan men’s and women’s teams have already qualified for the final 24 along with the defending 2002 world champions; The Brazilian men’s and the Italian women’s teams. The number of vacancies for each Confederation in the final round will be determined following the late entry deadline.

Being staged every four years, the World Championships, which first started in Prague 1949 for men and in Moscow in 1952 for women, are the FIVB’s most important Volleyball competition as they incorporate a first round followed by a second round series of tournaments in a process that climaxes with a grand finale of the best 24 teams in each gender.

The last World Championships were held in 2002 in Germany for women and in Argentina for men.

7 players on the court...what's the call?

At a girl's Volleyball club tournament, the libero forgot to come  off the court, leaving 7 players on the court. The official never noticed there were 7 players on the court and play continued till there was a side-out. The team with 7 players called a time-out, then re-entered with 6 players. No one noticed the extra player on the court, with exception to the team with 7 players.

Had the official noticed there were 7 players on the court, what is the appropriate call/hand signal? Is it out of rotation?

Thanks in advance, Bill Winneshiek R.U. Frazy scalvolleyball@yahoo.com

Yes, signaling out of rotation is the correct call. The penalty is loss of rally, And cancellation of any points scored.

Best Regards, Todd Haverkos tdh@vbref.org
