LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Aberdeen

Hi Dave, I am Erik Milowski, Volleyball Development Officer for Aberdeenshire Council and coach of Hazlehead women's team ( Aberdeen ). We play in National League Division 1 in Scotland ( 5th last year ) and we are looking for new keen players. I also am looking for new players for Bon Accord men's team ( Aberdeen ). We have just been relegated in national division 2 and we want to come back up next year.

Thanks Erik Milowski Erik.Milowski@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Ref Stand Required

Hi Dave, Is anyone or does anyone know of anyone who is selling a referee stand, suitable for playing National League Division 3. I have done quite well to raise funds so far for our first venture into the National League with Dartford, but I would prefer to buy one as cheaply as possible.

I was thinking of teams who may not be continuing next season or maybe a sports hall closure??? If not it looks like I'll have to get the old tombola out and maybe organise a cheese and wine party!!!

Many thanks, Chris Dixon info@dartfordvolleyballclub.co.uk

Rugby Phoenix

Dave, Rugby Phoenix currently have 2 teams, one Men's and one Ladies, playing in the West Midlands Division 1 leagues next season. Both teams are keen to hear from any players who would be interested in joining the Club and either playing competitive league and cup matches or just want to come along for some extra training. If anyone would like to find out more information, please either contact me at aneel.khanna@btopenworld.com

Kind regards, Aneel Khanna aneel.khanna@biwtech.com

Wallyball Suction Cups

Does anyone know the manufacturer of the suction cups used for Wallyball? Picture of Suction cup can be seen here: http://www.pacificsports.com/images/110090%2El%2Ejpg

What I'm looking for is the side pump piece. The washer on that piece is broken and apparently breaks often. The suction cup is $59.99 and since the piece is removable it seems like a waste (and expensive) to have to buy an entirely new cup. Email me at atrus@uotrades.com if you have ANY information.

Thanks, Atrus uoatrus@yahoo.com

Cambridgeshire Club Required

Hello, My name is Yarelis. I am Venezuelan. I've been playing volleyball since I was in school. I live in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Unfortunately the ladies team I was playing for is lack of players so the team is not playing anymore. I have played in Bridlington beach volleyball for 3 years. I love indoors volley as well. I am looking for a ladies team close to Cambs. Please let me know if you know of any.

Regards, Yarelis yaribeth_uk@yahoo.co.uk

VOLLEYBALL EVENTS
Shark Beach Volleyball Competition.
Due to our big presence in all the nightclubs/bars in Cornwall, we have decided to sponsor the Animal Beach Ball Event. This is a huge event with a Volleyball competition, surfing competitions, Miss Reef Competition, all covered by the extreme sports channel, Live Music and generally a fun packed weekend. And if that's not enough, SoBe drinks are bringing their chill out area and there will also be a graffiti workshop, robot show and face painting for the littlest groms.

Shark Stimulation is a energy drink similar to Red Bull.

The event will be held at:

Fistral Beach Newquay - 17th and 18th July

Porthmeor beach St Ives - 24th and 25th July

Tristram Cliff, Polzeath - 27th and 28th July

As a sponsor we will be handing out samples on the day, as well as providing a free bungee run for everyone. However our main event will be the Beach Volleyball competition. The event will be split into groups.

Therefore we will have 5 teams for the Saturday and 5 teams for the Sunday, with the final being held on the Sunday. Therefore the winner and runner up of Saturday will play the winner and runner up of the Sunday competition on that day. Same system used for the Polzeath event. Therefore we need 10 teams for each event.

Anyone wanting to enter the competition should phone our hotline number. Here they will be asked to state which town they would like to enter and leave a contact number and we will then phone them to confirm their entry. The number is 07816 917286.

The first prize will include a clubbing experience to London for each player. This will include their travel, hotel, free entry into the club and some free drinks. Second prize will be Shark goodies etc,

NEXT on TV

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) is proud to announce that for the third year in a row, the Swatch-FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour is receiving increased television coverage, including a total of 30 hours with more than 20 hours live, on Europe's leading sports TV station Eurosport.

With the qualification process for the Beach Volleyball competition at the Athens Olympics in full swing, the Swatch-FIVB World Tour is more exciting than ever and now has the perfect platform throughout Europe through Eurosport.

“The partnership between the FIVB and Eurosport has definitively helped to improve the awareness of the Swatch–FIVB World Tour in the last few years,” FIVB President Dr. Rubén Acosta said. “TV figures are increasing on Eurosport and we are proud to continue a fruitful and productive TV plan in 2004 which integrates sponsors, sport and audience. As a result, through Eurosport we have been able to approach a young TV target that can enjoy beautiful venues and the best athletes in the world almost every week during summertime. This will also help to create momentum towards the Olympic Games in Athens.”

"Following last year's successful season, Eurosport is pleased to announce the broadcast of the Swatch-FIVB World Tour in 2004; especially as we know Beach Volleyball is a growing sport which attracts audiences who are looking for the thrilling combination of entertainment and sport,” said Roberto Passariello, Marketing and Communication Director. “This partnership is in line with Eurosport's continuing commitment to provide audiences with a wide variety of live sport events."

There are 10 Swatch-FIVB World Tour events remaining in the 2004 season including seven ahead of the 2004 Olympic Games.

EVA Beach Coaching Course
The number of qualified beach coaches dramatically increased the other weekend, following the running of England's first official beach coaching course by the EVA. It was run by Denise Austin at the Volleyball Beach training centre at Croyde in North Devon.

The course was designed for existing indoor coaches to add the beach game to their portfolio of coaching skills. The two day course was split in to various disciplines and each skill looked at individually. Although the course was not full and we were all guinea pigs for this first course, over all it went extremely well. It was a good format, well presented by Denise and we all found the subject of beach volleyball fascinating.

Saturday
Beach Safety, serving and serve receive / Setting / Attacking Shots, hard driven and the pokey / Blocking and defence position

Sunday
Beach Defence, moves, position and playing the ball / Game play, movement and positions / Debrief, question and answer session, / Exam

Most people (including me) fall in to the trap of trying to playing indoor volleyball on the beach (and then wonder why it does not work). For most people this is as far as they wish to take it, a fun day or weekend out on the beach. Personally, I can't recommend this course high enough, if you enjoy the sport of volleyball, then get your name down for the next course and learn how to do it correctly, there are plenty of new skills to learn and cross training opportunities with the outdoor grass game (Park Volleyball). I believe the next course may be in August / September and Denise is currently looking to running one in Northern Ireland later this summer. You can contact Denise at austin@seabirdsbandb.freeserve.co.uk for more info or why not contact her about running a course in your area.

TEAM of the WEEK
This weeks teams of the week:  Paignton's VC, from their trip to Perranporth.

Ladies winners and youth runner up:  Rachel Shears, Leah Hutchings, Kirsty Lewis and Sophie Irving

Mens plate winners: Tim Willcocks, Richard Bavister, Neil Dyke, Dan Eynon.

Paignton carried on their spectacular season this weekend, braving the rain and the cold at the Perranporth Beach tournament on the North Cornwall coast.

We put in four teams, two mens and two womens, all of whom battled their way through a cold and rainy morning, playing in pools against teams from all over the country, including some strong National and Regional league teams from Rushden and Yeovil. The overall cup competition was won by Yeovil 1. The two Paignton Men's teams both narrowly missed qualifying for the cup, but this gave them the chance to compete in the Plate competition.

Paignton Ladies: Kerry Tonkin, Anne Freeman, Layla Cowley, Ute Strohl

Both teams played well, especially the 6th form combination of Ben Nelson Smith, Dan Gillard, Martin Moir and James Boyce. They played fast, attacking volleyball and their potential was appreciated by many of the other teams playing and spectating. The "older" team of Dan Eynon, Neil Dyke, Richard Bavister and Tim Willcocks proved too solid in defence for everybody, and passed the afternoon undefeated. Both teams met in a tense semi-final, with the staff thankful to overturn the students, knowing that judging by this year it may be the last time this happens! The staff team went on to the Plate Final, and easily defeated Yeovil 2 to win the Plate trophy.

Meanwhile, the two ladies teams competed in a ladies and youth league. Whilst the slightly "older" team floundered a little, the younger versions excelled themselves, progressing all the way to the final and eventually beating Yeovil's women's team (Yeovil impressively having made it to all three finals) with Leah Hutchings in particular described as "outstanding" by the referee, whilst Kirsty Lewis' back court play excelled, Sophie Irving was a dependable setter and newcomer Rachel Shears became stronger and stronger as the day progressed.

Having won their division in the Exeter league, Paignton have had an excellent year, in only their second full season. Next stop Exmouth on July 11th!

NEWS ITEMS

National Volleyball Premier League

The 2003/04 National Volleyball Premier League was personally a very large project which required much organizing and commitment. However, I would like to note that it could not have been a success without all your support and assistance.

I have decided to take the challenge on again for 2004/05 season and I hope to make the event bigger and better. The format will remain similar to that of last year with some changes (ie. title change, major sponsors, TV & also introducing women events). The locations are still to be finalized but there will be an event in the South, Midlands and North. I hope you will be able to support me again and create an exciting volleyball showcase for all volleyball and to be volleyball fans.

Thank for reading this.

World grand prix

The World Grand Prix for Women has started this week in the south of Italy. The twelve teams are divided in two pools and play a round robin for 6 places in the final. Italy as organizing country will be placed even if not under the first three. Big surprise of the first day was the 3-1 defeat of Russia against Korea. The point /fault analyses showed a near equal attack pattern with a clear advantage of the block for the Russians but the game appears to have been lost by an excess of 11 opponent errors , mostly service errors. Serving of the Russian's has been poor with an average of about 20 % errors for only 3.5% ace. The USA team easily won with 3-0 from a new and young Cuban team but had to struggle hard next day for a 3-2 victory against Japan. The Japanese lost first day from the Netherlands with 3-0. The Dutch surprised the second day by beating world champion Italy in a five setter with 3-2. The two teams made several training matches which were all won being often in five sets by Italy. The Dutch now make good chance for place in the final and the match against the USA this afternoon might be decisive.

There is great similitude in the way top teams are playing. Following data are referring to the world grand prix competition and in particular to the last two days of the competition. All teams in the final play with a single setter. When the setter is in the backrow the attack is either directed to the outside or opposite hitters on the aisles or the middle attacker in the center. When the setter is in the front line there are only two attack positions. In order to spread the attack over the whole length of the net the middle attacks either in first tempo in the center or backwards by the slide at position 2. For those teams who have the capabilities the number of attack positions is extended to backrow attack. In most teams this attack is performed by the opposite but the Russian teams use their outside hitters. A distribution of the attack is presented in following table.

Total % %suc %err Csuc%
Outside 777 64.43 43.24 17.37 31.31
First tempo 344 28.52 54.36 11.34 48.52
Back row 85 7.05 49.41 21.18 35.82
Total 1206 100.00 46.85 15.92 36.79

Although those data present only a biased sample of all data ( last two days of the competition ) the average correspond rather well to the average of the total competition

Total %suc %err Csuc%
Competition 6695 46.45 14.10 37.66

About 28.5 % of the attacks are preformed in first tempo while backrow attack amounts to 7 % . The efficiencies of the type of attack are quite different, the first tempo attack appears to be most efficient with in particular low error percentage and highest success rate. The backrow has relatively high errors but those
are compensated by high success rate too so that this attack type can be ranked before the more usual outside attack. The attack types were applied in different ways by the various team as can be shown from next table. The Chinese and Korean teams were using clearly more first tempo attack than the others, Italy and Russian applied more backrow attack while the Koreans were not using the backrow option at all.

Teams total % outside %first tempo %backrow
