2004 British Home Nations Championships - Results

ENGLAND are the 2004 British Home Nations Men's volleyball champions.

Expertly marshaled by coach Ian Legrand and led on court by the timeless Alex Bialokoz they finished unbeaten in the tournament at the University of Ulster Jordanstown north of Belfast Northern Ireland.

The European B league squad beat both their C league opponents Scotland and the fast improving Northern Ireland. In the silver medal rubber Scotland beat the home team 3-2 in a thriller prompting Scots Head Coach veteran Tommie Dowens to remark it was the best ever Ulster squad he had seen in his 20 years+ of competition.

Outstanding performances from all team members were praised by NIVA coach Gerry Ford. But young rangy Middle Attacker Piers Browning of Campbell College and veterans Alan Workman of Garvagh, Marc Booth of Larne, Nick Wright of Portadown and Robert Knipe almost snatched the shock of the year win over the Scots. Too many wasted services failed to convert that dream into reality.

Results are:
Saturday 21st Aug
Northern Ireland 0 - England 3 Set score (23-25, 16-25, 21-25)

England 3 - Scotland 1 Set score (25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-24)

Sunday 22nd Aug
Northern Ireland 2 - Scotland 3 Set score (14-25, 26-24, 15-25, 25-23, 6-15)

I would like to thank our sponors:
University of Ulster, Excite Exhibition & display, aurion, tayto, powerade and toolshed.

And thank all the fans and volunteers that came out to support the Northern Ireland team over both days.

Northern Ireland Men's Captain
Nick Wright

National Volleyball Club Audit

Please can you help us!!!

The English Volleyball Association has recognised the need to establish a baseline with regard to participation levels in Volleyball in England.

This important piece of research will guide the EVA's future strategic direction and Whole Sport Planning process.

The aim of this project is to establish a complete and accurate picture of the participation levels and a profile of participants in volleyball. This includes volleyball in all its variations, including beach and park volleyball, and from casual through to competitive organised volleyball.

The research that is currently being undertaken will

·       Analyse existing participation statistics and other existing evidence, to establish a picture of 'officially recognised' participation

·       Establish a profile of participants.

·       Identify participation on national, regional and local bases of non-affiliated volleyball and to conduct sample surveys.

·       Identify issues and barriers to participation and to affiliation.

·       Identify key recommendations and outcomes of this research to inform future decision making and to best influence sporting policy and resource allocation at national, regional and area level

·       Provide information on potential funding opportunities and partnerships available to develop participation in Volleyball clubs.

During the research we will be making contact with Local Authorities, Clubs and any other organisations who are involved in or have a connection with volleyball.

We are particularly interested in hearing from clubs who have had no connection with the EVA as they play an important part in the sport.

So please: We want to hear from you!  Contact us with any information that you may have about your club or others that you know. All information will be treated confidentially.

Brighton Beach sports centre

We are soon to be putting in our bid to Brighton & Hove City Council for a site along Brighton  seafront and are keen to get as much support in writing as possible. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone would write a letter of support either on an individual basis or on behalf of a club/association/youth group stating that you think the facility would be successful and that you would be keen to use the facility. We are also looking for sponsors so please forward any possible contacts.

Yellowave Ltd has been set up specifically to develop a beach sports centre for beach volleyball, beach rugby and beach soccer. The centre will provide many unique advantages over traditional sports facilities, being safe and low impact for diving or falling, making it suitable for beach based games and activities. It will bring a whole new dimension to sporting activities and will provide a year round beach experience.

The central flood lit area will hold six beach volleyball courts or two FIVB international courts. The equipment for these courts will be set up and dismantled easily and efficiently to produce a larger area for beach soccer and beach rugby pitches or other activities, all of which will appeal to a young market as an alternative sporting experience. Surrounding the main area will be tiered decking for spectators. In bad weather the central area will be covered with a retractable roof allowing for year-round use. There will be space outside the central area available for relaxing, childrenýs play and other sand activities plus a cafe/bar offering healthy snacks and drinks. Also available will be a 4m high bouldering wall for climbing. The centre would host sporting events at local, national and international level, some of which would be televised (including Sky and ESPN).

Yellowave have so far received interest and support from Brighton & Hove Council, Brighton Fringe Festival, Octagon Sports Marketing (who wish to run the Annual Beach Soccer World Wide Event at the facility) and TouchRugby.com (who wish to run the European Summer Splash Tour). The English Volleyball Association have shown interest in running a national Grand Prix event at the facility and using it as a training venue for the run up to the next Olympics. Furthermore, the EVA has recently made a positive step to bringing an FIVB Euro leg to the UK and the facility could certainly cater to such an event. The EVA will also give the facility regional status.

If our bid is successful we hope to get phase one of the project up and running by July 2005.

Volleyball England Championship Series

The VECS replaces the event previously know as the Premier League . It will be played on a similar format but with the composition of the teams being slightly different this time. Last year it was the three top teams in NVL 1, with some additional players drafted in.

This year, to better assist the development of our National Teams and to help prepare the players for international competition, it has been decided to base two teams around the national team players and select a third team from the best of the remaining players in the NVL. These teams will all be very competitive.

Trials for the Select Team, yet to be named, will be held on Saturday 2nd October. We have provisionally booked a venue in Oxfordshire for 14.00hr - 19.00hr. If you are a player interested in attending the trials or a coach wishing to nominate one of your players then please e-mail the details to Lenny Barry at lennybarry@aol.com

Please note that you have to be registered with the EVA to be eligible to participate in the event. Additionally you will need to commit to the events, which includes hosting a development session for local youngsters, and be available for all three rounds of matches. At the moment the matches are scheduled for weekends of 7 November, 6 February and 10 April. Deadline for nomination/expression of interest is 5pm on Friday 24th September 2004.

NIVA hosts FIVB International Coaching Coach
International volleyball coaches from as afar afield as Mexico and Israel joined colleagues from England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland at the University of Ulster’s Jordanstown campus this week to take part in Northern Ireland’s first international coaching programme in almost a decade.

The event marks another step in the University’s drive to establish itself as Northern Ireland’s centre for volleyball excellence, according to Nick Wright of the UU Volleyball Club.
"The course presents the most recent trends of the modern game of volleyball and allows the participants to exchange ideas and experiences."

"The FIVB International Level I Coaching Course is aimed at improving the knowledge and competence of coaches and teachers so that they may gain recognition as FIVB coaches," he said.

Athens 2004
World number three China pulled off a miraculous comeback from two sets down to beat Sydney 2000 silver medallists Russia 3-2 (28-30, 25-27, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12) and claim the ultimate prize    the gold medal   in a stunning final at the 2004 Olympic Games women  s Volleyball competition in the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Saturday.

It is China s second Volleyball gold medal following their first triumph in 1984 and is a vast improvement on their fifth place finish in Sydney four years ago. For Russia (formerly the USSR) they miss out on their fifth women  s Olympic Volleyball gold having won the title already in 1968, 1972, 1980 and 1988 and it is their second successive silver after losing to Cuba at Sydney 2000.

The gold medal capped an amazing 14 months for China, having won the World Cup and World Grand Prix titles in 2003 and was all the more impressive considering their tallest player at 196cm Ruirui Zhao had missed most of the tournament due to injury.

We are very happy,   said Chinese captain and MVP Feng Kun.  Obviously this has been a target for four years and we kept on going until the final point. It was a great performance by everyone, we had great solidarity and we kept playing through the tough times, and that is what brought us the gold.

The final represented everything that the women s competition has entailed - beautiful skill, matched with awesome power and ability - with the score drawing level 50 times during the match. Russia were at their magnificent best but China, in an excellent prelude to Beijing 2008, were up to the task claiming the tiebreaker in a thrilling finish.

After we lost the first two sets I told the players never mind because we haven t lost the match,   said Chinese coach Zhonghe Chen.  I told them we weren't playing that bad and to keep on going because we were getting better and better as the match went on.

Earlier Cuba, who were the champions of the last three Olympics, collected the bronze medal after beating Brazil 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 14-25, 25-17).

"Obviously, it is very difficult to follow the long and victorious history of the Cuban team,   coach Luis Felipe Calderon said.  It is a beautiful experience to have young people who follow the example of their previous co-athletes. Our goal was to reach the six best teams of this tournament and we gained the bronze medal. We are very happy."
World champions Brazil added another trophy to their burgeoning collection after winning the gold medal in the 2004 Olympic Games men  s Volleyball competition with a stunning 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22) victory over Italy at the Peace and Friendship Stadium on Sunday.

It was a spectacular performance from the world number one team with Giba, who was voted the Most Valuable Player, Heller, Gustavo, Dante, Sergio and Ricardo all in exquisite form, posing plenty of problems for a brave Italian side, who despite claiming one set, couldn t repeat their   perfect  semifinal performance against Russia.
"We have two gold medals now, one for the World Championship and one for the Olympic Games. That is all that matters,   Giba said.  We are winners. We were here for the first place, every player had this and only this in his mind. I am so happy."

The gold medal triumph completes a cycle where Brazil have won every trophy available on the international circuit, including the 2002 World Championship, the 2003 & 2004 World League and the 2003 World Cup titles.

I want to congratulate my team because it was tough to win, we had the weight of a nation on our shoulders,  Brazilian coach Bernardo Rezende said.   It wasn t easy leaving Brazil knowing that we were expected to win. That is a major strength of this team, holding together despite the pressure and being a team rather than a bunch of individuals. We deserved it because we held our poise and that will be the legacy of this team.

The only country to compete in all 11 Olympic Volleyball competitions, Brazil now has two golds and a silver after beating the Netherlands in the final in 1992 in Barcelona. Sunday's silver medal was Italy's fourth Olympic medal in addition to two bronze medals and  a second-place finish in the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Earlier in the day Russia proved too powerful for USA as they claimed the bronze medal with a convincing 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-16) victory.

We are very happy, it was a great match,   Russian captain Vadim Khamuttskikh said.  It was something like a compensation for our earlier defeats. The medal is satisfactory but in the next Olympic Games we will try for better results. I hope that back home, people are satisfied with our medal.

USA Nets Athens Gold & Bronze Medals, After not medalling in the first two women's Olympic Beach Volleyball competitions in Atlanta and Sydney, the United States captured two podium spots here Tuesday at the Athens 2004 Games.

Fourth-seeded Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs were the first American team to win a Beach Volleyball medal match as they scored a 21-18, 15-21 and 15-9 win over fifth-seeded Natalie Cook and Nicole Sanderson in 71 minutes to net the bronze medal before a capacity crowd of 10,000 at the Olympic Beach Centre.

Top-Seeded Brazilians Earn Validation, Olympic Gold Medal

After two disappointing Olympics, Emanuel Rego finally realized his "dreams" on a sand court in Greece as he teamed with Ricardo Santos to win a gold medal for Beach Volleyball power Brazil here Wednesday before another sell-out at the Olympic Beach Volleyball Centre.

Seeded first in the 24-team for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, Emanuel and Ricardo scored a 21-16 and 21-15 win over Javier Bosma and Pablo Herrera of Spain in 42 minutes to validate their performance the past two seasons as the No. 1-ranked team in the world.
