LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Club Required

I have looked at the website and it lists a venue in the Thames Valley area but doesn't specify where. Could you please confirm which town it is in? I live in Langley, Berkshire.

Thanks for your help, Justine Cream justine.cream@alcan.com

Beach Match Required

We are a travel company who look after Honda and their dealers world wide and we have a group coming to London for the weekend of 9-12 June and on Saturday 10 June they desperately want to play a game of beach volley ball with some like minded people. They are aged between 20 and 35. Would you be able to suggest a venue and a team against whom they could play so we could make it a really fun afternoon or early evening? If you cannot help can you forward this meal to somebody who can assist me

Best regards Lynden Swainston lynden@travelf1.com

Nikolai Karpol Book

I am a volleyball fan who is a solid volley spectator for more than 10 years, I am especially interested in Russian women's volleyball team and its coach Nikolai Karpol. I am writing to check if I have chance to get the book named: "Karpol - Lunatics - that's what I need". English version might be better for me to read. I've searched for any corner online, finally found this link: http://www.volleyballnewsletter.com/reports/karpol.htm

Unfortunately the link( www.nikolaikarpol.com) is not accessible at the moment if anyone could give some information about that book written by Tomislav Birtic and how I can get the book, it would be so great.

yours sincerely, Yu Robin pappiway@hotmail.com University of Bath

NEWS ITEMS

VOLLEYBALL CHIEFS CLEARED

International Volleyball Federation president Ruben Acosta and associates have been acquitted of charges relating to falsifying FIVB financial records. Acosta was also cleared of accusations he concealed income received from the federation. The not-guilty verdicts were handed down by a Lausanne court on Wednesday following two days of testimony last week.

The charges were brought by Mario Goijman, the former head of the Argentine Volleyball Federation. Goijman fell out with Acosta following the 2002 World Championships in Argentina over financial issues that escalated into Goijman's 2003 expulsion by FIVB from any volleyball-related posts, reports aroundtherings.com

Since then, Goijman has been seeking charges against Acosta and other FIVB leaders, including a complaint to the IOC Ethics Commission, which was dismissed in 2004 when Acosta resigned his IOC membership.

Score Rate

Points in volleyball when playing the rally system can be distinguished in service points and side-out points. The service points are made when the
team scoring has the service, side out points are obtained when a team recovers the service from a situation where the adverse team has the
service. Side out points are usually equal for both teams. This is exactly so when the team winning a set has started with the service. Service points are therefore important as the team scoring the more points is winning the set. In the Italian data analyses system which is widely used in Europe, service points are indicated by break points, term which will be used further in this contribution.

By taking the ratio of the number of breakpoints and the number of services a parameter is obtained which may be called the ability to score or score rate. (SCR). Between two teams the team with a higher score rate will win the set. For the case the score rates are 0.30 and 0.25 the team with the higher score rate will win on average with 25-20. Both teams will score 15 side out points and successively 10 and 5 break points, which can be verified.

Break points can be scored as direct points (aces) or in the game by the attack or block. For a deeper analyses it is often of interest to take out
the effects of service errors and aces. By the following relation a new score rate can be calculated where only the points in the game are taken into account BP=(N-A-E)*scr +A

Where Bp = break points
N = number of services
A= number of aces
And E = number of errors.
Scr = reduced score rate

The score rate so obtained is directly related to the actions terminating the rally. It can be reminded that a team having the service may score a point in case of following sequences 0+ 000+ 00000+ etc and - or 00- 0000- Where 0 is a neutral attack + an attack kill - an attack error, net or out for the adverse team or a kill block. When the attack characteristics of both teams are known, than the score rate can be calculated from those data. The data so obtained may be slightly higher than score rates observed by the fact that attack efficiencies do not remain constant over the rally and may differ for the attack following the service reception or following a defence action.

Observed score rates both including SCR and not including the service effect scr are indicated in following table which is extracted from data for the qualification round of the European Champions League 2006.

The table indicates that the SCR may vary from 0.2 to 0.35, which are typical values for men top volleyball. The teams which have qualified for
further competition are near all in the top and hence have higher scr than the teams eliminated.

There is no general trend for scr with and without service influence. There are teams where the service hence contribute to scoring and others where the service brings no useful contribution. The explanation is simple and depend on the relative difference between score rate and service results. The earlier relation presented to calculate the score rate can also be used to find a relation between aces and errors at constant number of breakpoints. After some rearrangement one obtains following equation A/(A+E) = scr

The score rates with or without taking into account will remain the same when the relation of aces over aces plus errors for the service equals exactly the score rate SCR.. This is an important relation giving an indication of the amount of allowable errors for the service. When both teams have very different score rates than the amount of errors will also be very different and the ace ratio has to be compared with the score rates for each teams. For two near equal teams which will score with the same rate there will be no difference. For a typical value for a score rate of 0.333 one may show that the amount of allowable errors is two times the amount of aces hence E=2A

It is argued sometimes that aggressive serving is required to exercise service pressure and that this will allow for the errors. Aggressive serving
may lead to direct aces but it is difficult to demonstrate influence on score rate. In the data analyses system service reception is ranked according to positive end excellent receptions. An excellent reception allows all attack options including a rapid attack in the middle. In general there is no correlation in attack results and the positive or excellent ranking data. Those data might therefore not be relevant the more as it often observed that a good opposite is able to score out of a poor pass.

Better than an absolute percentage of service errors, figures often quoted as 15 to 20 % it might therefore be more judicious to monitor the ace ratio and limit the amount of errors in line with the current score rate of the team.
