TEAM of the WEEK
Team of the Week Wimbledon Volleyball

Wimbledon Volleyball Club’s most successful season!

Three of Wimbledon Volleyball Club’s five teams won their respective Surrey League competitions this season, recently finished.

The men’s second division Wolves won their division 11 wins to one defeat, the team’s best ever record. In fact, they set a club record 10 match unbeaten run which started at the beginning of the season. The last match was against Teddington Shag Piles at home and the team won 25-16, 22-25, 25-10, 25-21. In the last set, the Wolves led 10-3 so Teddington’s fight back from that made it a tense affair. The team in that match consisted of Sam El-Jouzi (captain),Rob Peacock, Mojo Khan, Roland Stephan , Steven Jones, John Cann and James Burton (coach).

Wimbledon warriors

The men’s third division Warriors team also won at home on the same day three sets to one against Teddington Carpet Burners, again, having led by a big margin in the last set, 15-6, it turned into another nail biter but the Warriors held out to take it 25-23, and with that guarantee victory in the division. With a squad of 18 players turning up, coach Sam El-Jouzi was forced by EVA rules to select a maximum of 12 players to play. The Warriors went on to win away mid-week to finish the season with 9 wins from 10 and claimed the Division 3 title.

The newly formed mixed team, the Wombles, had earlier in the season won the inaugural Surrey Mixed Division following a close set count with Epsom.

The men’s first division team, the Flames, won their last match of the season against KS ODRA to secure their presence in the top flight next season.

Wimbledon Wolves

The women’s team unfortunately lost their last match of the season to BA Jetsets, but went down 3-1 in battling style displaying the improvement in form this season thanks to Shy Bertilsson’s coaching. After some close results throughout the season, the mid-table showing offers promise for next season.

Wimbledon’s current register includes over 50 players from the UK and overseas, and standards range from beginners to former National League players. We offer structured training sessions and competitive matches throughout the volleyball season, which runs from October to April each year. The teams train and play home matches at Raynes Park High School, beginners at Wimbledon YMCA, and we play outdoors in the summer, locally and at tournaments.

For details of training sessions and upcoming fixtures please visit the Wimbledon Volleyball Club web site: Jason Stone jasonjamesstone@hotmail.com

MONTREUX MASTERS 2006 By Leo van Hal

Introduction

The Montreux Masters 2006 were won by Brazil who beat China in 5 sets after having been behind by 2-1.Cuba took third place by 3-0 victory over Italy. Some of the teams such as Poland and Russia were not at full strength and finished as last on places 7 and 8. Germany who has also successfully completed qualification for the European championships became 5 before Japan.

Analyses.

This competition is played in two separate pools of 4 teams. The numbers 1 and 2 of each pool play in cross semi finals for a place in the final, the numbers 3 and 4 play in similar way for places 5 to 8 in final qualification. There is hence no full round robin competition in which all teams play each other, which may bias some of the analyses .This article will present some statistical data for both teams and players.

SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Update.

With the women idle for another week before the first SWATCH-FIVB World Tour grand slam event in the Swiss Alps, the international Beach Volleyball tour for men makes it annual stop in Portugal for the Volkswagen Open de Portugal in Espinho.

The US$200,000 Volkswagen Open de Portugal marks the 12th-straight year that Espinho hosts the worlds best Beach Volleyball players on the Praia da Baia. Competition is scheduled to begin Tuesday afternoon with country quota matches followed by the Qualification Tournament Wednesday to determine the final eight berths for Thursdays opening Main Draw rounds.

The finals for the Volkswagen Open de Portugal are set for Sunday when the last two teams compete for the $32,000 first-place prize and the fourth gold medal on the 15-stop mens SWATCH-FIVB World Tour. Germanys Julius Brink, who won the 2005 Espinho title with Kjell Schneider, returns with Christoph Dieckmann as his partner this year as the pair placed third in the SWATCH season opener last month in Shanghai.

Also returning are four players that have competed in the previous 11 Portuguese mens event, including four-time winner Emanuel Rego of Brazil. Other perfect Espinho participants are Portugals Luis Maia, Martin Conde of Argentina and Spains Javier Bosma. Emanuel won twice in Espinho with Jose Loiola and current partner Ricardo Santos. Ricardo has also won four times, including once with ZeMarco de Melo and once with Loiola.

In the last SWATCH mens event this past week in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy, Switzerlands Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel rebounded from a Friday defeat to SWATCH-FIVB World champions Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil to win their last five matches to claim their seventh FIVB title and their third gold medal at an open event.

The Swiss Successes were remarkable as Heuscher and Kobel avenged their setback to Marcio Araujo and Fabio by defeating their first of two Brazilian teams Sunday with an 18-21, 21-17 and 15-13 semi-final victory. After falling behind 7-3 in the third and deciding set of the gold medal match to Athens 2004 Olympic champions Emanuel and Ricardo, the Swiss rallied again to win the match 14-21, 21-17 and 15-12.

The Italian finale was the sixth-time the two teams have met since Emaneul and Ricardo posted an Athens Olympic semi-final win. Bronze medalists at the 2004 Olympic Games, Heuscher and Kobel have now won five of 12 matches against the Brazilian champions, including two-straight wins.

To defeat the top two ranked teams on the SWATCH tour in the same day is unbelievable, said Kobel after the 59-minute finale. We did not give up when we were behind in both matches. Patricks play was the difference and he deserved the SWATCH award for the most outstanding player. It is a great feeling and it will give us an emotional lift heading into the Gstaad grand slam in two weeks.

With the Swiss victory, all three mens and womens events have featured different winners so far this season. Marcio Araujo and Fabio captured the mens season opener in China three weeks ago before Emanuel and Ricardo claimed the gold medal in Croatia. Womens gold medalists this season have been Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca of Brazil (Modena, Italy), Chinas Xue Chen/Zhang Xi (Shanghai) and Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh of the United States (Athens).

This weeks event is the third of six-straight weeks of SWATCH-FIVB World Tour action in Europe. Following the Volkswagen Open de Portugal stop, double gender competition at the same site resumes for seven-straight weeks starting with back-to-back Grand Slam stops in Switzerland (Gstaad, June 20-25), Norway (Stavanger, June 27-July 2).
