Beach Sponsorship Options
Opportunities for companies to sponsor UK beach players in UK and European events, do not come around very often. However Top women pairing Shauna Mullin & Mel Coutts are currently looking at options. As a team we won the British Champs at the Windfest tournament in Poole last year, this will be the first beach season that Mel and I will be playing together as a competitive team. Last season Mel was in the final at Weymouth and we are ranked the top players in Scotland, Shauna reports. This summer the team are playing on the Urban Tour, the Scottish Tour and then at Weymouth and Sandbanks. After the summer the team is looking to enter a couple of European Tournaments - Satelite or Challenger events. You can contact the team at star_fish_712@yahoo.co.uk

Old Kevlar Net Headlines
So what do you do with your old Kevlar net Headlines? Each year we have to replace a couple of our net headlines due to normal wear and tear but instead of throwing them away. We recycle them in to guy ropes to make out door training nets for our 5 to 8 year olds.
![]() We find that young kids like to play on a court that looks and feels like a real adult court. At this time of year, shops sell cheap combined Badminton, Tennis & Volleyball net sets. They are a bit on the small side, weak and not much to look at but if you make a few net fittings, add some guy lines, you end up with a junior outdoor net which young kids like to play on.
Reclaim from your damaged Kevlar headline, appropriate lengths to make a set of guy ropes, make yourself four rope slides from any spare piece of wood. And from your local army surplus store, add a length of rope for court markings, wooden pegs, a mallet and a large sack bag to place it all in.
![]() We have also used these nets indoors as well, we cable tie the posts to a set of badmington posts, then attach our out door net. This gives us a junior net which is slightly higher than a badmington net but more importantly, it still has the looks and feel of a real volleyball court. For more details on our summer Fun in the Sun youth Volleyball sessions for 5 - 8 year olds and 9 to 16 year olds, please see www.torexevolleyball.com. Dave Reece Dave.Reece@volleyballnewsletter.com

SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Follows G8 Leaders to St. Petersburg
With the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour returning to Europe after a brief stop in Canada for the Montréal Open where teams from Brazil captured both gold medals Sunday, the event will be the ninth stop on the men’s 2006 calendar while the women will be competing on the international circuit for the eighth-time this season. Peter-And-Paul Fortress and its 300 years of history will be hosting a SWATCH double-gender for the second-straight year. The women will be making their third visit to St. Petersburg and the men’s competition will mark the sixth Russia tournament in the 20-year history of the FIVB circuit with two previous stops on the Neva River and two events in Moscow. The US$400,000 St. Petersburg Open will host women’s play for four days concluding with the medal matches Saturday. The men’s competition will end Sunday with the bronze and gold medal matches. The final two teams in each gender will be competing for the $32,000 first-place prizes. With Emanuel Rego/Ricardo Santos and Juliana Felisberta Silva/Larissa Franca leading the way, Brazilians captured all six medals at the 2005 St. Petersburg Open. Both champions return to defend their Neva River titles, but each team will be seeking to reverse their finish from the Montréal Open where they lost to Brazilian rivals in the finals. The Athens 2004 Olympic champions, Emanuel and Ricardo dropped a 21-15 and 21-13 gold medal decision Sunday to Marcio Araujo and Fabio in Montréal after Juliana and Larissa were upset by Leila Barros and Ana Paula Connelly 21-15 and 27-25 in the All-Brazilian finals. Marcio Araujo and Fabio, the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World champions, defeated Emanuel and Ricardo for the first-time in six SWATCH gold medal meetings Sunday. The first-ever meeting of reigning and Olympic champions was at the 2005 St. Petersburg Open title match where Emanuel and Ricardo posted a 21-19, 22-24 and 18-16 win in 72 minutes over Marcio Araujo and Fabio. The 2005 women’s St. Petersburg Open was also “historic” for the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour as the gold medal match featured the youngest teams to ever compete against each other for an international title. Juliana and Larissa defeated Renata Ribeiro and Talita Antunes 26-24 and 21-14 for the crown. At this time last year, Renata and Larissa were 23 with Talita 22 and Juliana 21. If she repeats her 2005 Peter-And-Paul Fortress effort with Larissa, Juliana will be celebrating her 23rd birthday on Saturday when the women’s final is scheduled. The past two seasons, Larissa presented her partner with “early” gifts as the pair captured a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour title 12 days before Juliana’s birthday in 2004 at Mallorca and 13 days before the 2005 celebration in St. Petersburg. Following the Russian event, a string of seven-straight double gender events on the SWATCH calendar ends with grand slam stops in France (Paris, July 25-30) and Austria (Klagenfurt, August 2-6). Emanuel and Ricardo captured the first two men’s grand slam titles in Switzerland and Norway where they defeated Marcio Araujo and Fabio for the gold medals both times. Juliana and Larissa collected their first SWATCH-FIVB World Tour grand slam gold medal in Norway where they defeated their legendary Brazilian rivals Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede for the title. The first “major” women’s title in 2006 was claimed by the United States’ Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh where the reigning Olympic and World champions defeated Juliana and Larissa in the finals.

2008 Olympic qualification systems confirmed for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball
The qualification systems for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games have been confirmed by the International Olympic Committee. For Volleyball, the qualification period will start with the FIVB World Cup, which will be held in Japan in November 2007, whereas the qualification period for Beach Volleyball will run from 1 January 2007. For Volleyball, there are a total of 12 team vacancies for each gender. China is directly granted one vacancy for each gender as host nation. The first three vacancies available through qualification will be filled by the top three teams in each gender at the 2007 World Cup, which will take place from 2 November 2007 until 16 November 2007 (women) and 18 November 2007 to 2 December 2007 (men). A further five vacancies will be filled by the winners of Continental Championships organised by each of the five FIVB Confederations (AVC, CAVB, CEV, CSV and NORCECA) over the period from 1 December 2007 to 15 January 2008. A minimum of four participating teams is required for such Continental Championships. The remaining three vacancies for each gender will be decided by World Olympic Qualification tournaments (1 for women and 3 for men). These World Olympic Qualification tournaments, to be held before 8 June 2007, will also be used to fill any remaining continental vacancies in the event that one or more continents do not hold Continental Qualification tournaments. For Beach Volleyball, the qualification period runs from 1 January 2007 to 20 July 2008 with 24 team vacancies available for each gender. By 21 July 2008, the FIVB will establish an Olympic Ranking based on the best eight performances of teams in recognised Olympic Qualification tournaments (SWATCH FIVB World Tour events, SWATCH FIVB World Championships, FIVB recognised Continental Championship Finals). Whilst China will automatically qualify as host nation, the top 23 teams from each gender will qualify for Beijing 2008, subject to a maximum of two teams per country. In order to respect the universality principle of the Olympic Games, if a continent does not have any teams qualified after the above procedure is applied, the 23rd place will be occupied by the highest-ranked eligible team from the continent in question.
