NEWS ITEMS
IFIUS Volleyball Championships.

UK interest focuses on Sheffield University women as sole entrants from UK, University College Dublin, winners of the EVA Student Cup, are also competing.

IFIUS is an organisation that arranges an annual event for individual universities in a number of sports. It started in the late 90s with men's football, then took in women's football. Futsal, indoor football, followed. Last year basketball was added, and 2006 sees men's and women's volleyball added.

In all there will be nearly 1300 athletes descending on Dublin for four days of intense competition.

In volleyball there will be teams from as far apart as Chicago (USA), Dublin (IRE), Sheffield (ENG), Antwerp (BEL), St Petersburg (RUS), Sannio (ITA) and Azad (IRN) to provide a wide variety of cultures and experiences to the event.

The standard looks like being high with the team lists showing a great number of players in top divisions, and a good sprinkling of full and junior international players.

Matches will be played at University College Dublin on Tuesday - Friday 10-13 October with match start times of 1000, 1200, 1400 and 1600.

More details about IFIUS can be found at www.ifius.com/dublin

IFIUS World Inter University Championships, Dublin - Day 4.

Final day of competition, and the level of intensity undiminished. Four hard days, five or six matches for the teams and a hard social life to manage as well!

Sheffield women played their final match against University College Dublin. Familiar does from EVA Student Cup encounters, neither team wanted to lose this match.

An early injury to Cassie Guess caused a problem for Sheffield, losing the first set to 17.

Passing issues returned and the efforts of Jenna Stevens-Smith and Kris Heemskerk in attack were undone as the set was lost to 19.

Third set saw a Sheffield revival, competing to 20, but final errors cost defeat 25.23.

Su Sondergaard, Sheffield setter said "it has been a great week. It might have been early season for us, and not as well prepared as we would have liked, but it is a fanatstic experience to play against such teams, and make good friends with so many people."

Sannio (ITA) defeated Morraine Valley (USA) 3.1 28.30, 25.17, 25.20, 25.17 to seal the Championship.

UCD men lost in straight sets to Sannio (ITA) to finish in sixth place.

Islamic Azad University (Iran) were the best team at the Championships and confirmed this when they took on St Petersburg (RUS) in a showcase match.

Both teams played some top level volleyball. St Petersburg had the better of the early exchanges, leading at 18 in the first set, but Azad, with 8 Junior and 2 Senior Internationals were unrelenting and unfazed. They clawed back each point and closed the set to 22.

Azad had a fine passing platform enabling some complex and explosive to be run, commiting the middle blocker, for a clear power hit outside. This proved devastating and the controlled the set, winning to 16.

St Petersburg rallied in the third set, matching Azad and leading at 19. However four consecutive service errors proved fatal as Azad came from behind to win 25.22, and take the title in front of a large, vociferous crowd.

A strong field, quality matches and enjoyed by all. The inaugural IFIUS Championships were a great success.

May-Treanor & Walsh Complete American Beach Volleyball Gold Medal Double

Acapulco Bay Women's Podium completes double gender SWATCH action

YouTube Volleyball

As you would expect, plenty (well more than 4000 the last time I looked) of thirty second volleyball video clips on www.YouTube.com

However this clip may be of interest to you, its from Athens 2004 - Men's match Poland versus Argentina and shows a player retrieving the ball from the other side of the net, a move which you don't see too often, all part of an amazing rally.

Americans Snare Final Men’s 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Gold Medal.

Making it three wins in a row over the reigning Olympic champions, Americans Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal slipped past Brazil’s Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos in three sets here Saturday afternoon to earn the gold medal in the finals of the US$400,000 Corona Open on the Playa Tamarindos.

Seeded fourth in the 32-team Main Draw in the men’s season finale on the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, Gibb and Rosenthal posted a 19-21, 21-16 and 15-13 win in 73 minutes over the second-seeded Brazilians to share the $32,000 first-place prize enroute to their first international gold medal finish in six Beach Volleyball starts this season.

Prior to Saturday’s gold medal victory, Gibb and Rosenthal had posted a pair of semi-final wins over Emanuel and Ricardo in Europe and South America in their only two other meetings with the Brazilians. After defeating Emanuel and Ricardo in the Paris and Vitoria semi-finals, Gibb and Rosenthal finished second in both events, losing to teams from Brazil and Germany.

“I thought the key today was our steady play today,” said the 30-year old Gibb, who was the 2005 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour co-rookie of the year with Matteo Varnier of Italy. “We were fortunate to get a lucky roll on a crucial point at the end of the third set along with the Brazilians making a couple hitting errors. It’s good to end the season with a win. It will make the upcoming holidays and off-season very enjoyable.”

Rosenthal, who is a leading candidate for the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour co-rookie of the year award, was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the Corona Open. “I am honored,” said the 26-year old Rosenthal. “However, it takes two players to win a match and Jake is one of the best players at the net. ThIs is terrific and I’m almost speechless.”
