British Olympic Association Partnership Initiative
British Volleyball and Land Securities Group PLC are delighted to announce their partnership as part of the FTSE-British Olympic Association Initiative. Land Securities will partner British Volleyball to help identify the planning, resources and structures necessary to enable Britain to compete with credibility by 2009, and to compete with success at the 2012 Olympics. The partnership is expected to continue beyond the London Olympics in 2012. Commenting on the partnership, David Godden, Chair of Land Securities’ CR Committee said: “The aim of this partnership is to drive a higher profile for volleyball, which we believe is a sport with an exciting future. While many of us play occasionally, or did so during our schooldays, it is difficult to access the clubs or facilities to take the sport any further. We will be using our Shopping Centres and our established links with schools to help give volleyball the attention and support it deserves. We will also be encouraging our own employees and our suppliers to help us in this venture. Our ambition is to encourage talented youngsters to develop their skills in this sport, perhaps even to international competition standards.” We come into contact with a broad spectrum of the local community. This exciting partnership with British Volleyball provides a great opportunity for us to extend our relationships with these communities, while encouraging new participants in a sport which is open to all. We want to help improve the prospects of British success in volleyball at the 2012 Olympics." Richard Callicott, Chairman of British Volleyball England, is as excited about the partnership as David: “Teaming up with a company as dynamic as Land Securities will give the added impetus to British Volleyball to make an impact in 2012, if not before. We are looking at ways of raising the profile of Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Sitting Volleyball in the community as well as preparing high performance players and introducing them to a wider public.” Rebecca Lee rlee@volleyballengland.org

This course is the Volleyball England Level 1 course with pilot enhancements by BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) and Volleyball England to cover 6 vs 6 coaching and coaching of large diverse groups (please find attached some details of the Level 1 course as per EVA course organisers handbook). For people who are interested in coaching children (e.g. through outreach projects), we also organise a class on 'Safe Guarding and Protecting Children'.
Course: Volleyball England Level 1 Coaching course with enhancements
Dates:
Price: This includes the £25 EVA coaching registration for the current year (I am trying to find out if this includes registration for next year).
Safe Guarding and Protecting Children: Please sign up before: Thursday the 1st of March. This course is particularly interesting for university volleyball clubs, but participants of other clubs are also very welcome! To run the course we need at least 14 participants (the maximum number for the hall). Please state if want to go to both courses (Level 1 coaching course and Safe Guarding and Protecting Children) or only one of them. Please send a cheque (made payable to OUVC) to me (Nynke Hofstra, 4 Lovelace Square, 512 Banbury Road, Oxford, OX2 8JU) at least 2 weeks before the course (i.e. 17 March). The places will be divided on a first come first serve basis. After the 1st of March we will still be able to take registrations (if we haven't reached 24 by then), but we will need 14 interested people to start with. So be quick and secure your spot for this course! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch. Thank you very much and I am looking forward to your registrations!
With kind regards,

Wanted Newbury Volleyball Club
Join a club that's clearly going places, Newbury Volleyball Club, England's only Volley 2 club, is seeking male and female players for NVL. Support given to players moving to the area. Newbury Volleyball Club have become the first club in England to achieve the prestigious Volley 2 club accreditation award. Volley 2 is a step up from a Volley 1 award and shows that a club has further excelled in areas of good practice and club development. Being the first club to achieve Volley 2 is an amazing achievement for Newbury who achieved Volley 1 accreditation in November 2006. Through their Volley 2 work they have managed to formalise no less than 3 school-club links and at the time of writing this article were well on their way to making it 4-6! Newbury are dedicated to developing and recognising their valued volunteers. As a new webpage feature for 2007 they are nominating a volunteer of the month.

In Memory of Gary Banks
A very close friend and ex Sale and RAF Harriers player, Gary Banks was tragically killed in November in a car accident in Saudi Arabia. He was working there and had been for over two years. His wife Sue and son Oliver James returned to the U.K where he was buried in his home town of Rochdale in late November. Gary was an ex Greenhill schoolboy who was coached by Roman Paraschak as a junior but later went on to play for various clubs. He will be most remembered for his time as an Raf Harrier from 1988 to 2000 where he was always the life and sole of the party as well as being a fantastic player and the best mate anyone could have. He was a true all rounder playing both rugby league and football to a high standard, (he only beat me once at tennis but don't mention that). Gary was 42 years old when he left us. The RAF are planning to organise a memorial tournament in Gary’s memory in June and what we would like is for as many people who knew Gary or played with him to be involved. I am sure the list is endless, what I would like is for people to send a mail to gbvolleyball@hotmail.com.uk I can then get list together and try to get everyone on the same mailing list to see who crops up out of the woodwork. Once we have numbers we can organise the full event which I hope that Sue and Oliver James will be able to attend. I really thank you for your help in this sensitive request, it has been a really hard couple of months for everyone who knew and loved Banksy and I am sure that the proposed memorial will be fitting of his place in the game. New FIVB Logo
The new logo comprises four separate elements. The ball is made from one front panel with a -40 degree angled gradient from white to blue. The remainder of the ball uses 3D panels as we look inside it. The rays push the ball towards the viewer. They use a radial gradient to give the impression the ball is glowing. The new FIVB logo in white is used, as it is placed on a colour. World League is written in a sleek, original typeface. The type also has a glow across it.

European Champions League update
In the second round of the 12-team playoffs of the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2006/07, six Western European teams cruised to the last playoff round. Two Italian teams (Lube Banca MACERATA and titleholder Sisley TREVISO), Knack Randstad ROESELARE from Belgium, Portol Drac Palma MALLORCA from Spain, German VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN as well as Champions League 2004/05 winner TOURS VB (FRA) will fight for the three remaining Final Four tickets. Polish BOT Skra BELCHATOW, disregarding their 3:2 victory over Portol Drac Palma MALLORCA, lost their place in the playoff 6 in extremis due to the difference in points. Mariusz Wlazly seemed to be weakened by the heavy trophy he was awarded by the CEV for his merits as ‘Best Attacker’ of the League Round before the beginning of the match, as he could only secure 12 points out of 35 attacks. ‘I feel very weak’, he stated disappointed. ‘I also served very weak. It was a tragedy.’ Panathinaikos ATHENS, defeated 3:1 in the first playoff match, still would have had the chance to beat the Italian adversary Lube Banca MACERATA. However, under the guidance of head coach Ferdinando de Girogi, the Italians assured their qualification having won the second and third set before finally taking home the 2:3 victory. In the all-italian derby, Sisley TREVISO tied opponent Bre Banca Lanutti CUNEO into knots. Though, following the bitter 3:1 defeat in the first encounter, this week’s mission did not seem to be a piece of cake, especially since Cuneo needed to be beaten with an identical result. In the end, Alessandro Fei and Alberto Cisolla, figureheads of TREVISO, did not leave the slightest chance to their adversaries and swept them off the court after only 81 minutes in front of 1’600 thrilled supporters. In the presence of Mr André Meyer, CEV President, Mr Philippe Berben, CEV Senior Vice-President and CEV Vice-President Mrs Riet Ooms, Knack Randstad ROESELARE managed to secure the much-desired place in the next stage of the competition. Especially head coach Dominique Baeyens was very delighted to celebrate his birthday with the eleventh victory of his team out of twelve Champions League encounters. The match was dominated by top performances of captain Ivan Contreras (25 points) and Ben Hardy (20 points), who booked point after point for their team in front of more than 4’500 spectators. While the first set was quickly decided after a clear 25-16, the second set was full of suspense with several set balls for both selections, before the Belgians finally prevailed (32-30). The third set will enter the annals of the Indesit European Champions League with the remarkable score of 40-42. However, Knack Rrandstad ROESELARE did not lose sight of their objective clinching the fourth set and the final victory 25-14. TOURS VB confirmed their participation in the playoff 6 after another 3:1 victory over DHL OSTRAVA (25-21, 17-25, 25-19, 29-27). Best scorers were Guemmadi (20 points) and Hachemi (17) for TOURS while Konecny (29) and Burrow (16) were the best OSTRAVA players. The French, winning the 2004-2005 Indesit Champions League title with a 3:1 victory over Iraklis THESSALONIKI, will face Portol Drac Palma MALLORCA in the next round. Last but not least, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN (GER) booked their ticket to the final playoff round after a 2:3 defeat against Noliko MAASEIK (BEL). The Germans kick started into the match winning the first set 25-22, securing them the six-playoff qualification after a 3:0 home victory a week ago. Although the Belgians fought back bravely carrying off the fifth set 15:13, FRIEDRICHSHAFEN merit their place amongst the best six European teams, having won nine out of twelve matches of the Men’s Indesit European Champions’ League 2006/07. The Germans will meet titleholder Sisley TREVISO in the last and decisive playoff round. The six-team playoff matches are scheduled from March 6th to March 15th. New schools from FIVB
Money from FIVB will be used for bulding 18 new schools in the regions which were afflect by tsunami in december 2004. FIVB relieved 3 million dollar last October. After the 30th FIVB World Congress approved the FIVB's 3 million dollar tsunami relief package last October, FIVB President Dr. Ruben Acosta, the Asian Volleyball Confederation President and head of the task force Mr. Wei Jizhong and Mondo Rubber have all of them confirmed the final details of the project and the schedule for construction. A total of 18 new schools will be funded by the FIVB, distributed across the tsunami-hit regions according to the priorities fixed by the FIVB's tsunami task force. The majority of the schools will be built in Indonesia (8), with 5 planned for Thailand, 4 for Sri Lanka and 1 for the Maldives. After a personal inspection by Mr. Wei it was confirmed that the school installations will consist of 5-6 classes that can each accommodate 25-30 students, metal furniture and sports equipment, water and electricity supplies, toilets, a flag hoisting plaza, metal barriers and a sports ground, including an outdoor volleyball court. The FIVB has signed a contract with flooring company Mondo, who will provide the entire installations for all 18 schools. The necessary infrastructure will be produced and shipped from Mondo's new production site in Beijing, which was set up for the occasion of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, with the aim of expanding its presence in the Asian market. In addition to this one-off humanitarian aid grant, the FIVB, as the sole world governing body for Volleyball, comprising 219 affiliated national Volleyball federations, invests several million dollars every year in its Volleyball Cooperation Programme, which aims to raise the standard of Volleyball worldwide. The AVC's extensive development programmes in Asia are based at the FIVB Regional Development Centres in Thailand and India.
