Volleyball (according to Yahoo) no longer exists.
In issue 212, we highlighted that you can now watch the FIVB Beach world tour live online via the Eurosport web site at: www.eurosport.co.uk/mclivevideo.shtml. This week Eurosport appears to have handed over the management of their web site to Yahoo. The live feeds appears to have disappeared and the sport of Volleyball (according to Yahoo) no longer exists! I have reported this to Yahoo and it would be great if everyone else could also send a quick fault report to them ( via the following link: http://help.yahoo.com/fast/help/uk/sports/cgi_feedback?subject=bugs) asking were is the Eurosport volleyball information for the FIVB Beach Tour and the World League. Sports Clubs of the Year Awards.
Newbury Volleyball Club was selected by Volleyball England as their Club of the Year in April this year. They were then put forward to the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR) to be considered as Sports Club of the Year (SCotY). The CCPR is an organisation which pulls together 270 national governing and representative sports bodies in the UK. We were fortunate to be selected as one of only six finalists out of over 200 original submissions. This meant that four club members had to attend the awards ceremony and dinner on the 8th May at Grange City Hotel in London. Footballing legend Sir Bobby Charlton and sports minister Richard Caborn were to make the presentations to the winners. The SCotYs as they are affectionately known are made in association with the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. We all enjoyed a dinner during which we met other nervous finalists, sponsors and members of sports bodies.
![]() We were delighted to be awarded second place and a cheque for £3,000. The award was made to mark the club’s contributions sport in the community, by ensuring members attain maximum opportunities for development as player, coach and referees. The panel were particularly impressed by our work with young people and inclusion of disabled athletes. Tim Lamb, Chief Executive to CCPR said, “Their volunteers devote countless hours of their time encouraging participation in sport and it’s only right that their contribution is highlighted on nights like this”.

CSSC Volleyball Invitational.
The 9th CSSC Volleyball Invitational was held at Leeds University on May Bank Holiday weekend 5/6 May 2007. The Invitational provides the competitive outlet for the Civil Service National Teams. The following players were invited to represent CSSC:
Men
Women
Civil Service had strong and experienced squads, but lost a number of players in the two weeks before the event due to injuries and three ladies (Lyall, Coburn and Bunten attending Scotland national training camp). A representative team will always have the disadvantage of not playing or training together regularly compared to a club side, but they should balance that with ability and talent. The Invitational saw teams from Ireland and England offer stiff opposition to the Civil Service squads - Aer Lingus men and Newbridge women are Irish Champions, Warwick strong NVL Division One teams, England Junior men and English Universities women always a threat. The competition format is a round robin league, played over the weekend, with an incentivised scoring system - teams awarded one point for reaching 17 points in a set, another point for reaching 21 in the set, and two points for winning that set. Winning a match 2-0 gains four points, and winning 2-1 gains two point bonus. The idea is to encourage teams to maximise effort for every point, and it means that the overall result is often down to the last matches. Warwick men set the benchmark and, despite only dropping one set, were pushed all the way in many matches. Many sets with only two point gaps showing how competitive the contests were. Civil Service men were able compete in most matches but the continuity of club teams told as crucial errors were punished and enabled teams to take advantage. Civil Service women were greatly depleted by Scotland absences, and an inexperienced squad found it tough going but improved over the weekend. English Universities women proved to be the more resilient of the big teams and edged out Warwick. Mervyn Stanley, CSSC Management Committee member, attended the second day and gave out prizes, accepting positive feedback from the teams and match officials. RESULTS

NESTEA European Championship Tour 2007: Austrian Masters.
Austrian Masters Women's results Vassiliki Karadassiou and Vassiliki Arvanity from Greece took the first NESTEA European Championship Tour title 2007 in Austria, beating Norway’s Nila Ann Hakedal and Ingrid Toerlen, runner-up of the FIVB Shanghai Open 2007. The Norwegians were defeated by the Greeks for the third time in a final of the NESTEA European Championship Tour. Following final match defeats at the Swiss as well as the Turkish Masters 2006, Hakedal/Toerlen were burning for revenge in St. Pölten, but yet again had to admit defeat in a third set (18-21, 22-20, 15-17). “It’s like a jinx”, a disgruntled Nila Hakedal said. Their opponents had entered their match with a lot of respect for their counterparts, Vassiliki Karadassiou attesting: “Hakedal/Toerlen finished second on the World Tour in Shanghai which shows how good they are.” After the final of the Austrian Masters, Karadassiou commented: “We both played on the same level today, so I guess luck was on our side.” The sibling duo Erika and Emilia Nyström won the bronze medal in the women’s tournament against Belgians Liesbeth Mouha and Liesbet van Breedam (23-21, 21-18).

![]() Austrian Masters Men's results Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann from Germany won the first men’s gold of the NESTEA European Championship Tour 2007, beating Dutch Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil, winner of last year’s Spanish Masters, 15-12 in the final set. Following a ninth and a fourth place in this season’s FIVB World Tour, the Germans managed to climb the podium in St.Pölten, on a good way to defend their European Champion title 2006. “The development of European teams is moving fast”, stated Brink after winning €8’500 Euros and 300 ranking list points, “The Brazilian and American teams have always had the advantage of being strongly challenged on their national tours. We are very glad to be experiencing a similar trend on the European Tour now. The level of competition and match play is able to compete with the world elite.” Nummerdor/Schuil, winners of the World Tour tournament last week in Bahrain, tried everything to secure their second victory on the NESTEA European Championship Tour. They had celebrated their first title in Valencia in 2006, but in St. Pölten the European Champions Brink/Dieckmann, who had defeated Estonians’ Kristjan Kais and Rivo Vesik in the semifinal, proved too strong. The Estonian team finished with the bronze medal without having to play, as one of their German opponents Eric Koreng suffered a muscle injury in the previous semifinal match. Kais/Vesik received €4’500 Euros and 240 ranking list points for third place, whilst Klemperer/Koreng were presented with €3’250 Euros in prize money and 210 points.
