Portsmouth Ladies Win at Weymouth
![]() After a long and tiring weekend of top class volleyball, Portsmouth take the honours in this years Weymouth Invitation Tournament, beating Wessex 2-0 in the tournament final. This was the fifth Weymouth tournament, an event for English women National League teams. To date we have not had a club win the competition twice, which shows how even previous play has been. This has been despite the majority of the teams in attendance, returning year after year. For the first time this year, we had representatives from all three NVL divisions. 16th Tenby Beach Open
![]() Yes, we’re back! Like the never ending “Rocky” remakes, we keep on staggering back onto the volleyball tournament calendar like a greying and paunched Sylvester Stallone or indeed - like that stubborn stain on the bedroom carpet that you’ve shampooed sixteen times! Many people have tried, but you just can’t get rid of us! So search your cupboards for those florescent yellow beach shorts; Clean out the tent which you packed away in the attic last year, (even though you were sick in it!); Buy a new pair of super cool shades; Stock up on baby oil and babychamme or do whatever it is you do in preparation for the weekend of the year. (But don’t forget to send in your ENTRY FORM). Once again the Tenby Tournament is being orchestrated by our Amalgamated Welsh.com team from Cardiff, Pembroke, Barry and other parts. Many of you will have your favourite accommodation already in mind but if you wish info. On B&B’s try the Tenby Tourist Information on 01834 842404 or e-mail tenby.tic@pembrokeshire.gov.uk or www.visitpembrokeshire.com, Kiln Park Camping 0345 433 433.
Tournament Notes Tenby is a lovely seaside town - Sand quality is good and soft, car park, toilets and cafe right on site and for those who have B & B's in town, you can park your car on Friday night and forget about it till Sunday evening as everything is within walking distance. Commercial Camp site about one and a half mile away by road - it's actually just the other end of the beach, but it's over a mile long beach so it's quite a long trek after playing all day. Germans Dominate on Russian Sand
Whilst Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann won the Russian Masters in the men’s event, their second gold medal in the 2007 NESTEA European Championship Tour, the German duo Kathrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler surprised the female contenders with their first win. All in all, the German teams have collected two gold and two bronze medals in Moscow. Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann won the final in the men’s tournament against Kristjan Kais and Rivo Vesik (EST) in straight sets (21-15, 21-17) one hour after Kathrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler had defeated Russia’s Alexandra Shiryaeva and Natalia Uryadova, European Champions 2006, in three sets (21-14, 15-21, 15-10). The two bronze medals were secured by David Klemperer/Eric Koreng (who defeated Clemens Doppler and Peter Gartmayer in straight sets) as well as the ladies’ duo Helke Claasen and Antje Röder (who defeated Petra Novotna and Lenka Hajeckova from the Czech Republic in three sets). The winning teams each gathered 8’500 Euros in prize money, the silver medallists received 6’250 Euros, and the bronze medallists earned 4’500 Euros each.

You can't teach tall...
Well, I'm 5'10" and been playing in beach tournaments for years. I love the game but I've reached a level where I can't get up to block the bigger guys. Despite fat loss, plyometrics, etc.. they just hit right over me. This forces me to play with a tall partner who does all the blocking. This is obviously tiring for them, and despite my unparalleled ball control, most prefer to play with someone with whom they can share blocking responsibilities. Not to mention that I get every single serve. This is a frustrated post... damn DNA. Any suggestions on how to grow? From: Dorsiflector dorsiflec...@att.net
I'm not quite 5'9" -- I know how you feel! I haven't done plyometrics in over a decade (and I doubt my knees would appreciate my trying). At least, fat has never been an issue for me (so
far
Been there, done that. You become creative, on mid-level try to pass nice and high, so your partner can then kill a ball here or there directly on 2nd hit. On the beach (as everywhere else), you try to find the level that suits you. Yes, you'll probably never play AVP ...
Robert M. Franz (RMF) robert.fr...@mvps.org
I am 5'9"ish as well. When I was young, I could dunk a basketball, so it did not mater. What has helped me now that I have tore my ACL and had too many birthdays, is to develope a 'soft' block and be deceptive. Instead of going for the 'roof', come a little off the net and try to block the ball up and toward your partner. At mid-level play, (kind of where I am stuck playing do to my age and infermity) blocking may not even be necessary many points. If you only soft block, you will get 'rolled' or 'lolly poped' alot. So do you best to hide it. Else, find firm sand or even go to grass.
And as Robert said, a great pass of service receive that your partner can attack or your own hot offense will get you off serve recieve. I must be doing ok, because I don't get served alot. Maybe my partners need to get better?
