I serve as the public address announcer for a local university's volleyball games. I have been asked to come up with some ideas that the PA announcer can use to help the crowd get more involved in the games. As an example, one of our traditions that is spoken after our team earns a point, has the PA announcer shout, "Point!" to which the crowd responds, "Rams!" (our team's mascot). I've been asked to come up with more ideas for similar crowd involvement in these games.

I've searched the internet for volleyball phrases or other ideas that I could use, but to no avail. I came across your website during my search and I'm curious to know if you have any ideas for me to consider. Have you been in gymnasiums where the PA guy used some creative terminology and involved the crowd? As the PA guy, I can't be a cheerleader, but it is within the rules for me to encourage the crowd to get more excited (i.e. "Point!" "Rams!"). I'd like to push the envelope a bit and be creative and energetic without being disrespectful to the opposing team.

Any ideas that you might have would be greatly appreciated, thank you for your time.

Portsmouth Volleyball Club is a long-established club for players of all levels in the South of Hampshire. We train and play in Portsmouth, but we attract players from all parts of the county. We have mens and womens team in the Portsmouth local league. We also have a womens team playing in the National League, and a newly-formed junior program.

We are preparing for the 2007/8 indoor volleyball season, and we are looking for volunteers and new players for all of our teams (mens local league, ladies national league and local league, and junior).

I've got an outdoor volleyball net that has not seen the light of day for far too long, and was hoping to attract anyone in SW London (more specifically in the Surbiton/Kingston) area up for some volleyball on saturday afternoons. This would just be a free and very non-professional knock about in a grassy part of a local park.

The Great Britain Sitting Volleyball Development squad is set to compete for the first time, in the Sitting Volleyball European Championships in Hungary, from the 3rd -9th September 2007. Featuring a full squad of disabled athletes, participation is seen as the first step towards Great Britain entering a competitive team in the London 2012 Paralympics.

GB will face Bosnia, Croatia, Greece, Hungary and Latvia who will all be playing for one of the three qualifying places this tournament offers for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games.

The British Sitting Volleyball Federation in partnership with the Pavilion Leisure Centre, Withernsea and East Riding Council, would like to announce the formation of the Withernsea Wild Sitting Volleyball Club.

Sitting Volleyball is a very quick and exciting game to play and watch, and is a variation of traditional Volleyball. It is easy and fun to play at a recreational level and players who develop a high level of technical and tactical skill will be encouraged to compete for places in both the England and Great Britain squads, with a view to ultimately playing in the 2012 London Paralympics.

As players sit on the floor, the game has few sports injuries and is easy to play even in smaller gymnastic or sport halls, including squash courts. Training will start at the Pavilion Leisure Centre, Withernsea, from the 16th September 2007 from 4pm until 6pm

Able bodied players have no advantage over disabled players, making the game very suitable for integrating able bodied and disabled players. Withernsea Wild will be competing in a national league in the near future, however the main aim of the team is to introduce this variation of Volleyball to anybody wishing simply to play a fun game at a local level.

The club is initially being set-up by Matt Lloyd from Hollym, who played Sledge Hockey for Great Britain in the 2006 Winter Paralympics and who has been selected for the GB Sitting Volleyball team playing in the European Championships in Hungary in September. Matt says, “this is the first time that Sitting Volleyball has been played north of the Watford Gap in this country, and is a great opportunity for people to try a new sport knowing that they’ll be welcomed and be able to reach their goals, whether it’s simply getting fit or playing at the highest level. I would encourage people to get in touch or come along regardless of age, ability or fitness levels – all that’s needed is a desire to play and have some fun.”

Q. I can't believe how many ball compression shots you have. How many shots did you take to get this "best of" collection?
A. I would have to check, maybe 500 total, although 250 of those were of the Cuervo/Bud Light/Lift Off/Crocs/AVP Girls.

Q. What equipment do you shoot with?
A. Nikon D200/70-200 f2.8

Q. What's your secret?
A. I do my best to keep the shutter as slow as possible. 1/250th-1400th or so. Either with a polarizer or ND. It has the downside of introducing camera shake, picking up player movement, and also leaves the background in more focus than you want if you stop down. Watch the net with one eye, and the defensive player with the other. The D200 isn't fast enough to have any luck with machine-gunning (I have never tried with an 8+ FPS camera, it may work better) so I try to guess right on the first shot.

Two public beach courts are now available on Exmouth beach, they have been provided with vandal resistant nets (heavy duty nets from Westcoast Netting) and are located between the lifeboat station and the sand dunes in the no swimming area of the beach.

The purchase of the nets have been sponsored by "Solar Safe", a Plymouth based firm that supports beach volleyball in various countries and are Volleyball England beach partners. The nets are free to use, just turn up (no booking required). They are for recreational use, the nets are not adjustable (fixed height) and you have to provide your own court lines.

The two courts have been organised by Jason Hendy of East Devon District Council JHendy@eastdevon.gov.uk and I understand that further beach developments are also planned for the area, including a set of beach showers.

Exmouth Beach Training

Elsewhere of the beach, open beach volleyball training sessions take place every Tuesday evening (weather permitting) by the Octagon.

An excellent area which has sheltered seating, limited lighting (via nearby street lights) and a spectators area, although it does get a little tight for space at high tide.

The University of Ulster Men’s Volleyball team have been drawn in the first round of the European Cup against Lasa-R from RIGA in Latvia. The first leg of the fixture will be played in Latvia on the 29th September whilst the home leg will be played at the University’s Jordanstown Campus on the 6th October.

UU are ranked higher than their Latvian rivals thanks to their successes in the European Cup in the 2005-06 season when they defeated Lornetzweiler from Luxembourg 3-0 in both the home and away 1st Round matches becoming the most successful team ever from the UK to compete in the European Cup.

In 2005-06 the University of Ulster was able to attract players like USA’s Sean Rooney who now earns upwards of $1,000,000 per year playing professional volleyball in South Korea and looks like representing the USA national team in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Team Captain Nick Wright expects to attract a few more volleyball superstars to the University for this years campaign to showcase the sport of volleyball in Northern Ireland. He feels that bringing foreign talent to play alongside the NI rising stars will benefit the growth of the local game.

“Our University team consist of the majority of the Northern Ireland national team and part of our strategy is to attract the very best players and coaches from around the world to come over here to help in the development of our young talent.”

“This is a very exciting time for our club to be back playing in this prestigious tournament which is a professional tournament similar to the UEFA Cup in football, where all the other teams have stadiums of thousands of people and they pay all of their players full-time wages.” Dr Nigel Dobson, co-director of the UU Sports Academy said, “The UU Volleyball team has been instrumental in boosting the University of Ulster’s sporting prowess throughout Ireland and across Europe. Having this year successfully defended their Irish University Volleyball title for the2nd consecutive year, the University wishes them all the best in their European Endeavour”.

In front 8,000 fanatical Indian fans in Kolkata, India, it was one of the best and most important Tournament victories in the history of the AIS/Volleyball Team Australia Men’s Program. Although this event was open to all commonwealth countries, only nine took part; Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and host India.

Following the success of the Championship (after a long wait of almost three decades), the Commonwealth Volleyball Confederation (CVC) are all set to regularize themselves and make the event a biennial affair in the world volleyball calendar. The organizers are also planning to unveil a women’s meet and also a beach volleyball event in the near future.

The Chinese squad defeated Turkey 3:1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-12, 25-22) in the match for the title witnessed by 4’800 spectators in Tijuana, Mexico, adding their third title after the gold medals obtained in 2001 in Pula (CRO) and in 2003 in Pila (ITA). The second place for Turkey is the best ever for the country in both gender events, considering that the Turks ‘only’ finished sixth in the recent Girls’ Youth European Championships in April in Brno (CZE).“We didn’t serve well enough which was a problem against a team like China”, explained Turkish head Coach Mehmet Bedestenlioglu.

In the match for the bronze medal, Russia defeated Girls’ Youth European Vice Champion Serbia 3:1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-21) with Irina Smirnova as the main offensive weapon booking 24 points and Ksenia Naumova chipping in 16. ”The team of Serbia is very strong and the whole match was very tough on both teams”, commented Russian head coach Rishat Gilyazutdinov after the match, “I think our serve and blocking made the difference today.”Serb captain Sanja Malagurski agreed, stating: “After winning the first set we relaxed too much. We lost the second set and tried to come back but their attack and serves were too strong.”

Following their unexpected fourth place in the Girls’ Youth European Championships earlier this year as well as their gold medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival 2007 end of July in Belgrade (SRB) after a straight-set win over Serbia, Belgium nearly came up with another surprise, closely losing out on fifth place against Brazil (22-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-23, 8-15). Glauciele Silva led the Brazilians with 20 tallies, whilst Belgian Jolien Wittock added 37 to her leading tournament total resulting in 197 points. Jolien Wittock was also the Best Scorer in the Girls’ Youth European Championships.

Girls’ Youth European Champion Germany missed out on the Top Ten with eleventh place, whilst European bronze medallist Italy finished twelfth.

Clemens Doppler celebrates a great comeback after two knee operations and wins the NESTEA European Championship Final 2007 with Peter Gartmayer Valencia.

In the final the Austrian duo Doppler/Gartmayer met their Dutch opponents Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil. That meant playing another team with an astounding success story. Both players are only in their second season on sand. They previously earned their money as professionals in the Italian indoor league. Valencia seems to have become a home away from home for the Dutch top duo. Nummerdor/Schuil won their first big international tournament at the 2006 Spanish Masters and now they again advanced to a final in Valencia with four consecutive victories. "We definitely enjoy playing in Valencia", Schuil said after the semi final victory against Germany's David Klemperer and Eric Koreng, "we are undefeated here so far."

Doppler/Gartmayer ended that mystique in the high-class final. The Austrian duo especially showed their toughness and will to win in a hard three-set match and were not intimidated by high deficits. They were down 16:19 in the first set and scored five consecutive points, three of them spectacular blocks by Peter Gartmayer. "After the win against Barsouk/Kolodinsky of Russia, the current Vice World Champions, we knew it would be tough for any opponent to beat us.

Our goal was to play with a lot of heart and we did just that." Klemperer/Koreng won the bronze medal defeating Kais/Vesik in three sets (13:21, 21:13, 15:10).

Klemperer/Koreng had underlined their position as smart European Ranking Leaders by beating their direct pursuers in the standings Emiel Boersma and Bram Ronnes of the Netherlands earlier in the tournament. Their reward: Two smart fortwo, a prize the athletes are really looking forward to: "That is really a great reward for our consistent play on this years’ NESTEA European Championship Tour", David Klemperer said. "It is a great honour for us to be the top-ranked team at the end of this eventful season."
