Quick'n'easy way to promote beach volleyball in the UK !!

After another summer of frustration of not being able to play much beach volleyball in his area, Patrick Chancelier has decided it's time to act.

In various parts of the UK, multi purpose 5-A-Side football league centres and franchises have been springing up. Centres like "Powerleague" (www.powerleague.co.uk) are backed by some of the major retail names in the UK and run by profession staff.

Patrick is currently collecting names and looking to lobby the managers and franchise holders of these venues to consider providing at least one sand court for beach soccer, beach footy and beach volleyball.

If you would like to help, support or assist in moving this concept forward, then please contact Patrick at p_chancelier@yahoo.com or visit the BeachVB.net web site. There is also a dedicated Facebook Group at: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2390843280

If you would like us to video and broadcast your event on line, then please contact us at: Dave.Reece@volleyballnewsletter.com for details.

Plymouth v Dulwich Tuskers

EVA Womens Division 2 Match (21-10-2007)

Plymouth (White) v Dulwich (Red)

Video Sponsored by: Plymouth VC

Dulwich Tuskers, set out on Saturday for their Southwest Sunday match, with an overnight stay in Plymouth arranged, the players should have been relaxed and fighting fit for the mid day match. However a car breakdown on the way resulted in part of the team returning to London. With only six players available and a chance of promotion this year, conceding the match was not an option, two players (plus three young kids) caught the 11pm over night coach, arriving in Plymouth at 5am. Just enough time for a taxi to the B&B for breakfast, a short kip and then on to the sports hall.

Plymouth: 2 A. Schulz, 6 A. Gutmann, 7 T. Summerfield, 9 T. Sanders, 10 L. Luckraft, 13 R. Thorpe, 15 H. Semonin, 21 Z. Martakova

UUJ Volleyball Campaign Ends

Latvian strongmen Riga ended the University of Ulster's European Volleyball Cup season last night at Jordanstown. The powerful visitors beat Ireland's only representatives 25-16, 25-17, 25-12 in the 2nd leg 1st round match and go thru to the next round on a 6-0 sets scoreline.

The men from the Baltic were too tall and powerful and overcame a UUJ side filled with Northern Ireland Internationals and bolstered by USA World Student Games players Dave Smith and Will Strickland, GB International David Hamilton and Californian Coaches Tom Johnson and Alan Knipe.

Team captain Nick Wright confirmed this was the last international volleyball match to be played at the hall as it does not meet full European Confederation (CEV) specifications. A new hall on site does and UUJ look forward to competing once more in Europe he added.

Spot Light on Martinus

One club to keep an eye on this year, is the Dutch club of Martinus, as well as their men's first team being made up of the British Olympic team, the womens team will be competing in the Indesit European Champions League. Hopefully we can bring you regular reports on their progress. For more information check out the following links:

The new Martinus Men’s Team will consist of the British Olympic men’s Team (London 2012). Under the guidance of Coach Harry Brokking the squad will face reigning champions Piet Zoomers/ Dynamo at Saturday 13th October. The match will start at 18.00 hours. Martinus has invited their sponsors and otherwise involved companies to meet the British players. Also the board of British Volleyball will be present.

The Martinus women also play their first home game at 13th October against Rijnmond Volleyball. Both games are played consecutively in the Bankras Sportshall in Amstelveen. We welcome all spectators to an evening packed with Martinus Volleyball entertainment. The Men’s game starts at 18.30. Come and see!!

A new season for Martinus, after a successful summer program the Martinus Women’s Volleyball team have returned to their Club. The players, who won the World Grand Prix with the Dutch National Team, will now start preparing for the regular Club season. After a week of rest to recuperate from the European Championships, in which the Dutch team ended on a slightly disappointing 5th place, the players are now preparing for the regular volleyball season. In their opening game on Sunday they won with a clear 3-0 the Super Cup against Longa from Lichtenvoorde.

Following the Super cup the Volleyball Gala was held in Zieuwent in Gelderland. This event honours the best Dutch players and coaches from the previous season in which Martinus won the Dutch league title and the Cup competion. Several female players from Martinus have been nominated in various categories: in the category "Female player of the year" Manon Flier and Caroline Wensink are two of the three nominees. For "Rookie of the year" Nikki Hoevenaars is one of the nominees and Avital Selinger is nominated in the Category "Coach of the year".

Indesit European Champions League
The Indesit European Champions League will take a prominent place this volleyball season. Twenty of the strongest and richest teams of Europe will compete in this prestigious tournament organised by the CEV. For the participating teams there are strict conditions including a live television report. Getting air time originally caused a problem for Martinus.

However, just before the end of the dead line RTV Noord-Holland guaranteed in continuation of last year: live television coverage of the home games. NOS Studio Sport will show the highlights. The Champions League home games will be played in the Emergohal in Amstelveen. Here the Dela Martinus Women will compete against three renowned top clubs.

Tuesday 2nd November they meet Dynamo Moskou, ranked number 2 in Europe. Thursday 20th December they play against Post Swechat from Austria and in their final game on Thursday 24st January Spar Tenerife Marichal will be the opponent. The Ticket Presale will soon be announced on this website, don’t miss it!

Volleyball Opportunities in Dubai

I am trying to get a league going here in Dubai. The league would be opened to all but I need to spread the word over the volleyball community around our small world. Is there any chance you could help with this?

We are looking for 4-6 teams, men and women. If you are interested to join, or have a team to enter, please contact us at: info@ekvolleyballclub.com

Currently we have a site that has been created by one of our fellow enthusiastic volleyball player www.ekvolleyballclub.com.

Other than the address therein, information can be fetched at this email address: lricher@hotmail.com. Please ensure “Volleyball in Dubai” appears in the subject line or else the email will go directly to my junk mail folder.

Thanks in anticipation for your help.

Photos of Interest

Our recent local league fixture meeting, took place at the local social club, with everyone crowded into one small room around one table and some cold coffee left over from a previous meeting. However if you are arranging the draw for this years European Champions League, you appear to have a slightly bigger budget that our £15 room hire fee.

The drawing of lots and the official presentation of the 2007/2008 Indesit European Champions’ League, held in the City Hall of Vienna (AUT) rounded up by a Volleyball Gala.

The eighth edition of the Indesit European Champions’ League will include the best 24 men’s and 20 women’s club teams in Europe, representing 18 national federations - the highest number of participation since the first edition in 2000/2001. The competition format foresees a period of eleven weeks for the men and likewise eleven weeks for the women. Whilst the men will kick-off the League Round matches in October 2007, the first League Round encounters in the women’s draw will not start until the end of November. The men and the women will both complete six League Rounds before the playoffs in February and March 2008 decide the Final Four teams.

The ‘European Volleyball Gala’ was broadcast all over Europe thanks to the collaboration of ORF and the TV channels partnered with the qualified teams in 2007/08.
