Fermanagh Flourish to Year's End
The 20th Annual All Ireland Volleyball clubs’ Blockbusters Blitz in Enniskillen was a fitting flourish to end the year.
As expected the trophies were won by visitors. Limerick’s Dariusz Skrzecinski and White Eagles Julie Kouamo were named players of the tournament. As ever the generosity of the Skea Spikers (Lisnaskea) and other Fermanagh organisers such as the District Council was obvious with a virtual Santa’s grotto of prizes and gifts at both on the Saturday evening Social in Willie Rambler’s Enniskillen nitespot and Sunday’s final presentations presided over by Council Chairman Alec Baird. An emotional moment for Liz Wilson who began it all more than 20 years ago as she was presented with jewellery by her most able successors Lorraine Comiskey, Majella McCabe and Miriam Coffey. The Social honours on a theme of the Roarin’ Twenties went to the Belfast veterans of Team Zimmer for their flapper, slapper, and gangster outfits including the Sedan they carried into the club. A big well done to celebrated NI Internationals, Geoff Hill, Gerry Ford, Stephen Forsythe and Marc Booth and the rest of their Zimmer-pushers. Making up the numbers on the women’s side was not how to describe the Golden oldies, the NIVA Women’s squad from the 90s who played like young ones throughout the preliminaries as did the current NIVA Junior women’s squad who Paul McIlwaine gave an unexpected outing to when a team from Naas were a late withdrawal. Next Year’s 21st promises to be a Silver Anniversary Special. Paddy Murphy paddy@nivb.com |

European Champions League
While the Martinus GB Men's team in Holland are yet to get off the mark, the Martinus women are storming through the early rounds of the European Champions League and top Pool E. DELA Martinus AMSTELVEEN secured their third victory this week with a win against the Austrian team of Post SCHWECHAT 3-0 (23-25, 22-25, 14-25).
Match Report: DELA Martinus - Dinamo Moskou
The first set Dinamo was impressed by the atmosphere and blown away by Martinus: 25-10. Second was closer and decided by some excellent services of 2.03 m tall Gamova: 22-25. The third set was won by Martinus, especially with some good tactical play by Francien Huurman and with heavy attacks by Manon Flier, 25-18. In the fourth set, Martinus was 8-12 behind but took up till 17-14 in their advantage. After having four match points Moscow however did win, 26-28. The deciding set started in favour of Martinus. But it came very close Finally, Martinus took the victory home, 15-13. This result means an excellent starting point for DELA Martinus to get to the second round.
Match winner Chaïne Staelens estimated the match on a very high level from the second set on. Martinus Head Coach Avital Selinger considered the match open, on a top level also. Except for the first set where Dinamo was clearly impressed. Dutch player Francien Huurman finished most efficient attacker, hard hitter Manon Flier (24 scoring attacks) almost leveled with top scorer Ekatarina Gamova for Moscow (27 scores).
