Hi all, more news from the web. Some MAC viewers have been unable to get any sound on our match DVD's (DivX), it appears that MAC users need to install a program called "Perian 1.1" to get the correct sound files loaded. Free copies of "Perian 1.1" are now available via our video page, many thanks to Alan for lending me his MAC. MAC's also appear to come preconfigured with DivX Player V2.x.x, please upgrade to the latest version V6.x.x (also available on our video page). Cheers - Dave Reece Dave.Reece@volleyballnewsletter.com |

2008 Volleyball England Beach Tour
The 2008 Volleyball England Beach Tour (VEBT) is starting at the beginning of June. Once again, the Tour is presenting a dynamic and action-packed summer of beach volleyball! Now in its third year and with "Blue Wahoo" as its brand new kit sponsor, the VEBT will be bringing Opens and Grand Slams around the coast and in land to beach volleyballers around the country. The season kicks off with the Skegness Open, on the 7th - 8th of June. This season-opening event promises to be a big one, with £3,000 prize money up for grabs and, for the first time in VEBT history, the top twelve finishing teams in each gender receiving a share of the cash! You can register for the summer as a beach volleyball player, and enter this and other events on the VEBT via the Volleyball England website (online entry will be available shortly). The season culminates on the 30th and 31st of August at the Nivea Sun VEBT Finals in Brighton, at the Nivea Sun Yellowave beach sports venue. An awards evening will also be held over the finals weekend, celebrating the summer's best in beach volleyball. Keep track of results and rankings, and stay up to date with VEBT developments in the Beach pages of the Volleyball England website. www.volleyballengland.org/Beach/index.php

GB Women v Luch (a Russian Club)
Results from a tough and close match: 2-3 (22-25, 26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 16-18). Another step in the right direction was the bottom line. Starting for us was Lucy Wicks (S), Jen Thom (PH), Paula Scott (PH), Rachel Laybourne (RS), Nicky Osborne (CBL), Grace Carter (CBL) and Maria Bertelli (L). Three more matches with them - May 27th, 30th and 31. Nigeria has shown intention to come around the 20th of June but not confirmed at this date. Lorne lsawula@compusmart.ab.ca Just had a positive match tonight and a reversal from Sunday. The team responded quite well after losing the first two sets 22-25 and 15-25. The third set was a nail bitter with us coming out on top, for a change, 25-23. Set 4 was ours all the way winning 25-19. The fifth set was strange one, with us going up 9-3, then hitting the wall and it ending up 9-8 before we stopped their run. Then it was some good volleyball but we dropped down to 12-13 before a big kill made it 13-13. Liz Reid finished the match with a block for the 14th and then, again, for the 15th point. Everyone contributed to the win (very special focus by our starters and subs) and our blocking was superb - I don't know how many right now but close to 20 (which will be a team high). I think that Luch will go more to their middles for our next match on Saturday. Starting most of the time was: Lucy Wicks (S), Liz Reid (RS), Rachel Laybourne (P2), Rachel Bragg (P1), Grace Carter (C1), Stacey O'Connor (C2) and Maria Bertelli (L). Jo Morgan (S), Jen Thom (PH), Paula Scott (Ph) also saw lots of action, starting in Sets 1 and 2. Dressed but not playing were Nicky Osborne (CBl) and Rachel Colley (S). CS NIVA Champions 2007-08
Despite being the oldest team in the Northern Ireland League, with an average age approaching 40, the Civil Service Men’s first team saw off their younger opposition to take the NIVA Division 1 title for 2008. Their near-perfect match record of 14 wins from 15 games gave them the league title for the first time with a clear 6 point lead over rivals Portadown Aztecs who finished second on 38 points.
![]() Their success is due to the instruction and guidance from their Polish Coach, Marcin Koscielny, who has raised the standards in the club over the past 2 seasons. Considering that the majority of the team only took up the sport a few years ago he can be proud of his achievement. The photograph shows Northern Ireland Volleyball President, Mr. Paddy Murphy presenting the league winners shield to team captain, Barry O’Donnell. Player/coach Marcin Koscielny, pictured wearing no.2 was later awarded the Club’s MVP trophy for his excellent contribution all season. Drew Mc Gookin Drew.McGookin@dfpni.gov.uk |
