Triangular Fixtures

Hi, I've just read your article in July's volleyball newsletter regarding triangular fixtures. I'm just trying to schedule a league of triangular matches and have 13 teams taking part - if you have a copy of the 13 team template available, I would be very grateful.......

It took a while but we finally tracked down our copy of the 13 team triangular template, it initially looks a little messy but as a number of teams in the original set up were University teams (with limited dates + BUSA) and a few teams had NL fixtures to work around. However it does work and will fit into a Oct - Mar season, a good starting point for anyone who has 13 teams to organise.

You can see all the fixture templates at: Triangular Fixture Templates

Portsmouth New Beach Courts

On the weekend of 20/21st September Portsmouth opened its new Volleyball Beach courts at Southsea. As Portsmouth Volleyball Club had been liasing with The City Council on its building, they decided to run an event to promote the completion and opening. They contacted all the other clubs around the area and invited them to the opening with the view to seeing what was available to them and playing matches.

The local paper 'The News' quoted:

There are three courts available much to the delight of players who enjoyed a sun-kissed day of activities with Portsmouth Volleyball Club. Club chairman Ray Sharpe said 'the day went really well, the weather was fantastic and so many people came along to have a go. They couldn't believe it was all free to use. I think it will be a huge success, thanks to the new courts Portsmouth Volleyball Association will be looking into running a summer league and maybe competitions next year.'

The courts, near the bowling green on Southsea Common, are funded by Portsmouth City Council to promote volleyball and other beach sports including beach soccer, rugby and cricket. The Council cabinet member for culture and leisure, Terry Hall, said: 'Beach Volleyball is an increasingly popular sport that was featured in the Beijing Olympics. I'm delighted we are able to provide this great new court that will give players of all ages the chance to take part.' Unquote

Portsmouth Volleyball Club ran their normal Saturday junior training on the new facility much to the delight of the kids, this was meant to be for 2 hours but they were enjoying themselves so much it went on for nearly 3 hours. In the afternoon the adults came down and played matches, with everybody staying until the sun went down - a group then turned up on the Sunday and played again.

Cardiff Wildcats
The 13th and 14th September saw our first indoor inaugural tournament take place, we received entries from across South Wales, the South West and even as far as Birmingham take part in our event.

After an action packed weekend in both the men’s and ladies events we of course came down to two clear winners, Bridgend Men took the men’s challenge title with 51 points and Wiltshire Mavericks Ladies 2 winning the ladies event on 31 points with local opposition Cardiff Ladies coming in a close second with 20 points.

After careful deliberation we decided (by voting really!) that the most valuable players of the tournament were: Ben Fairweather (Portsmouth Kings) and Rosie Kirk (Wiltshire Mavericks).

We promise next year’s event will be even bigger and better and are looking forward to seeing all participating teams again next year.

See you again soon

European Gold Badge

World Volleyball FIVB’s new President Jizhong Wei of China pointed out a new way he was going to run the body in the wake of the often controversial Mexican Ruben Acosta. Speaking to delegates at the European Congress including British representatives Richard Calicott and Lisa Wainwright of England, Marie and Patrick Murphy of NIVA and Scotalnd's Colin McGinlay and Margaretann Fleming.

Mr. Wei promised to respect and to co-operate with the CEV and vice versa. Mr. Wei said he intends to change the way FIVB has worked with both the Continental Confederations and the National Federations. “You will all be expected to play a much more important role than in the past, be aware that FIVB respects the right of all National Federations to freely express their opinions on the various topics related to volleyball competitions. And much more, you are also entitled to criticize the FIVB President, which is the very first that has to be constantly controlled and supervised by his partners”.

The British Volleyball Presidents Rich Calicott, Patrick Murphy and Colin McGinlay were presented with the new European Confederation’s Gold Badges by CEV President and FIVB Vice President Andre Meyer of Luxembourg to honour their work in the British Isles.

The New Mikasa Ball
The 2008 Beijing Olympics saw the launch of the fantastic looking new Mikasa Volleyball. With only 8 panels as opposed to the normal 18, it is expected that these balls will move more smoothly through the air and rumors are that there is less float on the ball…

Personally I have not seen the new ball yet but I know several clubs who are already using the ball, does anyone have any feed back or opinions (good or bad) which they would like to share with us.
