LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Chester Volleyball Club

Chester Volleyball Club (VC) have head into the summer season in style on the back of achieving Volleyball England’s version of Clubmark, Volley 123, in April 09, and are only the third volleyball club in the North West to achieve this. This award recognises the efforts the club has made to ensure sustainability and growth, meeting and exceeding the standards set for this prestigious award. It means a great deal to the players and helps ensure the provision of volleyball for the local community.

Volleyball is a small participation base sport at present. Chester VC hopes that by providing access to training venues and competition at a variety of levels, they will assist in raising the profile of the sport in the area. Currently there are over 50 members including men, women and juniors.

Achieving the award has given the club the deserved recognition for its entire endeavour this year. Several club members have been involved in key parts of the process and special thanks must be given to Ursula Hill, Maja Guenther, Paul Blackburn, Lenny Barry and Vanessa Skillen for their commitment and hard work.

Huge support has been given to the club by the local council and County Sports partnership, enabling mandatory courses to be attended by club members free of charge. Links have been forged with several volunteer organisations and key doors have been opened to the club due to this accolade.

Valuable links have also been formed with local schools, some of whom have been playing volleyball as taught lessons, but few of whom have extended this into after school clubs. Chester VC hopes to bridge the gap between school and adult participation. To do this they look to develop forward thinking, open minded and developmental plans to help guide their approach over the next few years. Plans are now in place for Chester’s first junior section to start in September in conjunction with Whitby High School, aiming for a new crop of young talent for this progressive volleyball club.

After achieving this national award Chester VC hopes to gain further support from its local community to help push forward towards achieving the next stage of Volley 123. News and events are available from Chester VCs website www.chestervolleyballclub.co.uk

NEWS ITEMS
Former Canadian International Qualifies for GB
British volleyball’s superstar recruit has spoken of his enormous hope for the future after the launch of the national team’s international programme in Sheffield this week. Jason Haldane was recently cleared to play for the GB national team and made his debut in the International Challenge Series matches against Australia at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.

The matches acted as a warm up to the men’s team’s assault on this year’s Confederation European de Volleyball (CEV) league series, which kicks off next weekend.

GB lost both games against Australia, but took the reigning Asian Champions to five sets in the second match, which, Haldane says, proves the sport is going in the right direction nationally. Jason said: “I know volleyball is not currently a massive sport in Great Britain and I knew relatively little about the squad before I joined. But my first impressions have been excellent and it’s been a really pleasant surprise to see the quality and potential we have here.

“We are already going in the right direction and whilst it was disappointing to lose to Australia, to come so close to beating one of the top sides in the world in the second match was a really brave performance and an achievement in itself. It gives us enormous hope for the future.” Haldane is a former Canadian international who qualifies to play for Great Britain through his father, who is from Clarke Hall, Wakefield.

He has played professionally in France, Italy and Belgium and won volleyball’s equivalent of the Champions League in 2001, and is seen by British volleyball chiefs as a major catalyst for the development of the team building towards appearing at the London Olympics in 2012.

“Physically the guys are in terrific shape and we can definitely compete on that level. But technically, there is naturally always room for improvement. “Personally, I am just hoping to use my leadership skills and experience to lead by example and help take this young team to a higher level. If I can fulfil my dream of playing in the Olympics in 2012 and improving the image of the sport in this country at the same time, then I will feel I have achieved what I set out to at the start of this journey,” said Jason.

The GB men’s team now start their league series campaign against with a match against current European Champions Spain in Valladolid next weekend (June 5-6).

GB v FRA Match Report

Dear All, in the tradition of Lorne Sawula I am sending you a quick heads up on the games and the match reports from the weekend. It was the GB women’s first venture into the Euro League. We started spritely in the 1st set on Saturday and caught the French somewhat off guard, they however reacted as expected and went to their 2 main power hitters who caused us problems all weekend.

In the 2nd and 3rd sets they came at us from the service line, upsetting the rhythm followed by confidence in our passing unit, which had a direct impact on our ability to kill the ball. What was encouraging was how we fought back in both sets and went back to causing them problems with our 2nd tempo attacks.

Sunday was a more positive affair all round. Attack efficiency went from -1% to 21%, particular success came from our left side attackers, primarily Janine Sandell and Jen Taylor. Our serving tactics and increased velocity caused them problems on SR, in particular we went after their passer/hitters and libero who struggled with the float serve to her right. Again the French reacted well and the experience of their main attacker came to the fore, finding line and cross court angles which our block never got to grips with. All in all on Sunday pleased with our performance. Both Lucy Wicks and Maria Bertelli were our most consistent players over the weekend.

Key Stats: Saturday
SR – Maria 2.38, Rachel L 2.33. Team 1.94
Att Eff – Janine 4.2%, Nic 14.3%. Team Att Eff -1%
