I want to play volleyball

I’d love to join a team, mixed or ladies only. I used to play years ago professionally for my region, Puglia, in southern Italy. I started again to play just for fun in 2005, and realised I had not forgotten much. Now I miss playing so much and would love to start again. I am 37. Please, let me know if there are teams looking for new members in south London.

Kind regards,
Alessandra Magri amagri@cafod.org.uk

A total of 18 men’s and 12 women’s teams from across the South West region came down to Exmouth to partake in what was a very successful and enjoyable day. Teams were blessed with good weather while it remained hot and sunny with light winds which enabled a high standard of game play.

After a particularly close men’s final it was Matt Mollen and partner Pete Sznicer who came out on top clutching first place followed closely by runners up Ryan Stout and Aiden Lewis.

Mollen and Sznicer beat Ryan Stout and Aiden Lewis with sets of 21-15 and 21-18.

The Last 100% Season

Earlier this year we asked, did anyone know the last time a team completed a 100% season, quite a few people thought Britannia Music City had achieved it in 1996 but unfortunately the Volleyball England web site appears incorrect and does not show this. Thanks to everyone who took the time to dig out their past Volleyball World League Tables June 1996

Hi, Indeed Britannia Music City did achieve the 100% record in 1995/96. As you will see from the attached scanned page from Volleyball World in June 1996. Yes, some of us are sad enough to have a collection of Volleyball World and Spike Magazine dating back to February 1988. If there is ever anything else that you think I can help with, just give me a shout. Cheers George Dickson george@coachvball.karoo.co.uk

Hi, Yes that's right we did go unbeaten in that year and did not drop a set. We also went unbeaten in 1991 winning 18 matches in the league but foolishly managed to drop 4 sets. During that season we also won the Cup and SuperCup (remember that) and two top international tournaments in Kostanz Germany and Haifa Israel. There was real competition at that time with Malory, Sale and Ashcombe all breathing down our necks so it was a real feat to achieve that record. Hope that clears things up
Cheers Paul Westhead p.westhead@ntlworld.com

From my copy of Volleyball World Vol 9/2 dated June 1996 I see that Britannia Music City were indeed unbeaten in the League in 1995/96. The results of Womens Division 1A – Top Half – showed that they Played 8 matches and won 8. Manchester United Salford were in 2nd place with Malory in 3rd.
Best Regards, Paul Hook paul.hook63@btinternet.com

Hi, Please find attached copy of the final 1995-96 league table as published in the English Volleyball Association Annual report for that year.

Thanks to everyone who sent in a note or two on this item

Volleyball Venue - UK School Games 2009

With the recent volleyball squad announcement, we introduce you to the University of Wales Institute where it will be held.

The venue will go through a remarkable transformation from indoor athletics track to two full sized volleyball courts. The video is introduced by UK School Games Event Manager Charlotte Russell.

Video: http://www.ukschoolgames.com/1046.php

From: www.ukschoolgames.com

Recently designated as the UK Athletics Talent Development Academy, this indoor athletics centre includes a 200m banked track, 140m straight track and designated areas for all throwing and jumping events. However the banked track will be lowered to allow the state of the art Taraflex floors to be laid creating international sized volleyball courts.

Volleyball as a Tool to Combat HIV/AIDS

From a university that prides itself on sporting merit, six representatives from Loughborough University have been selected to work in Zambia this summer to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS through Sport. Undertaking placements across the poorest parts of Zambia's capital Lusaka. Four student coaches will be involved in developing recreational sports programmes of Volleyball, Basketball, football and netball.

The IDEALS (International Development Through Excellence and Leadership in Sport) project, is run under UK Sport and will see students from Loughborough, Durham, Bath, Northumbria and Stirling work with two non-governmental organisations EDUSPORT and Sport In Action to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. A desease that affects over 17% of Zambia's population and claims the lives of 98,000 people a year.

The project champions sport as an activity without prejudices and barriers, brining children from across the capital together by integrating sport into social culture, by teaching games that highlight the dangers of drug taking, sex and the consequences these have on personal health. It is hoped that the real responsibilty if one's actions are put in perspective.

The project also serves as an educational platform from which students from The UK are able to engage with children from very different backgrounds to their own and by the same token, children from Zambia can learn from British culture.

The fifth student, selected as the media representative fro Loughborough will be working with organisations across Lusaka to publicise the roject and help develop utilise their media resources currently in use. The project has already helped thousands of children and can only continue with the support of funds raised for students to go out there. You can keep updated with the students activity by visiting www.loughboroughsport.com/zambia-blog
