Milking Success
The Ulster Elks Ladies Volleyball team journeyed to cork last week to compete in the annual Irish Intervarsities tournament and boasted a new kit for the occasion. The new Farmview milk kits are an extremely welcomed addition for the team.

Team captain Zara Bolton said "it was amazing to hear Farmview were going to sponsor the teams varsity trip and new kit. We hope they did them and the university proud in Cork, and on behalf of the whole team I would like to thank Farmview for their support".

The girls ended up a top three team in the tournament playing arguably one of the most exciting games of the final day against UCD.

The Elks won the first set of the game and came very close to winning the second. Unfortunately they didn't secure the third set and the game went to UCD. UCD went on to be defeated by Cork College in the Final.

Volleyball In Germany
Corinne Jeffries is one of our exciting young players who just can't get enough of the sport. She started with us as a junior and has worked her way up through the ranks, last year she was playing National league for Devon Women, U18 for Ashcombe and Beach with Exmouth BVC.

This year, Corinne has moved to Hamburg, so I asked her how she was getting on....

Well, where to start! Yes it really is a whole new world here in terms of volleyball, and there are a lot more levels to play at. In Hamburg there are two teams both playing in the division two Bundesliga which is divided into north and south Germany. In terms of playing standards it's more div 1 if compared to the English league.

However even in the division two, the players are paid to play, and all the clubs' finance is from sponsors. So the idea of paying to play for a team is a very foreign one! I'm training with a club called VT Aurubis Hamburg ( http://www.na.hamburg-volleyball.de ), and the club has a team in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga.
The 1st team are all professionals, so they train twice a day. I'm training with the 2nd team, where the age range is from 16 to about 28. We train every evening for 2 to 2.5 hours a night. strength and fitness training is built into that time. The team has a first and second coach, plus a physio, which is really great, and also means that the players are given more one to one attention.

There are between 10 and 12 of us in the team, so team spirit plays an important role in the club. I only joined in mid-September, and they had all been training since early-august, so I'm a bit behind. Training is always very intense and focused, often spending over an hour practicing one drill, such as free balls, defense and serve receive. Friday's training is more game orientated, in preparation for the weekends match and to put into practice the training during the week.

VT Aurubis Hamburg - Division Two Bundesliga

I haven't registered to play competitively because I can't commit 100%, I am working as a full-time au pair here in the city. Up until now this has worked really well, I have most evenings free, which means I can get to 3 or 4 training sessions a week, but I do have to make work a priority. I'm living and eating with the family, so financing myself isn't a problem, which is great, and takes a lot of stress away as I don't have to worry about bills/rent...
As well as the indoor volleyball, I've recently got a membership at a huge indoor beach centre ( www.beachkurs.de ) just up the road from where I live. With 10 indoor courts and 8 outdoor courts, this centre caters for beginners all the way through to the top German beach pros. It is a really amazing venue, and so I'm playing there around twice a week, depending on work commitments.

This means that I have access to beach coaching throughout the winter months, which is so great, because as a player I'm still undecided which route I want to take. At the moment, with the beach opportunities that I have available, I'm leaning towards focusing on beach, but I feel I'm still in need of a lot of technical improvement!

As for costs, I have a two month pass (40 Euros) which allows me to play 4pm-6pm week days and Sundays from 3pm for free. Training sessions are 11 to 14 Euros, depending on numbers.

Best wishes,
Corinne Jeffries corinnemjt@hotmail.co.uk

Peter Michna
Northern Ireland Volleyball mourns the death of Peter Michna

All those who knew Peter Michna are in shock following the news of his untimely death. Peter is wearing Number 10 in the attached picture of the Northern Ireland Civil Service team which won the UK Civil Service Mixed 2009 title and he was also on the Men’s winning team – a first ever victory for NICS. Peter had contributed greatly to Northern Ireland Volleyball both indoor for Civil Service and on the Beach. To his family circle in Poland and his friends here and there, the Northern Irish and British Volleyball community send their deepest sympathy.

Peter was the Match secretary of Civil Service Volleyball Club and died suddenly tragically at the weekend. He was a very good player helping Civil Service to 2007/08 NIR Championships and the UK Civil Service Men’s and Mixed titles only last month. He and Ross Moore (Bangor) were a great pair on Beach – Ross described his partner as a true gentleman - there or thereabouts for every final on the weather wracked Northern Ireland Beach Volleyball circuit. Rest In Peace Peter, the final whistle has blown too soon for you.

Special thanks to Mr. Patrick Murphy for having contributed this obituary. paddy@nivb.com

Ref's Course

Retired International Referee, Dan Dingle made a welcome return to the UK this weekend, flying in from Jersey to host the Exeter & District VA referees course. Providing courses as part of your on going development is an expensive part of running any association but with a large practical element and plenty of amusing stories from past matches, Dan's courses are extremely popular. It was a full course, students came from throughout the area and the feedback has been excellent.

Champions League match preparations in local coal mine

The players of JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. chose their own special way to prepare for the upcoming CEV Indesit Champions League. All players and coaches visited a coal mine named KWK Borynia. Having descended up to 838 meters below the sea level, they could realize how hard people have to work there. "For some of the guys it was a shock" comments Australian Igor Yudin, one of the best players included in the Polish team.

For a few years JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel S.A. has been playing regularly in the European Cups. The team is sponsored by a huge coal mine agency called Jastrzebska Spolka Weglowa. Before the games scheduled for the 2009/2010 CEV Indesit Champions League the board of the team organized an excursion for the players in one of the local coal mines. They had opportunity to see the very demanding conditions local workers have to cope with. The players entered the most difficult and dangerous areas of the mine. "It was an experience on its own. I can't say I got used to it, but for me it was a second visit in the coal mine. Not only in my opinion it's the hardest job in the world. For some of our new guys in the team it was a shock. But well, it is a job" says Igor Yudin.

After visiting the coal mine Italian-born coach Roberto Santilli ordered a free time for the players. "Well, for some our foreign players it was a bit of a shock, but no worries. They are tough guys. They will be ready for the coming matches" - adds Leszek Dejewski, second coach of the Polish club.
In Pool E the Poles are going to test the likes of Italy’s CopraNordMeccanica PIACENZA, Panathinaikos ATHENS and VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN of Germany.
"This Pool is not a joke. The opponents are really strong and hard. Our opening game is the one against Panathinaikos. They have in a squad such excellent players like Samica and Zagumny. The other two teams are very solid too. But look, we have our chances too and are waiting impatiently for the competition to start” concludes Igor Yudin.

Intimidating

If you are slightly restricted in the height department, then I'm sure at some point you would have lined up on court for a match, and then noticed that the out side hitter that you will be blocking today, is twice your size, has a 3.4m plus reach and looks like they are about to making mincemeat out of you today.

Personal blocking stats are normally replaced by thoughts of personal safety issues, that thought crossed my mind last week when I watched Ahmed Salah line up for Egypt against Japan in the Men’s World Grand Champions Cup.

Hall of Fame Announces Class of 2009 Inductees

The Volleyball Hall of Fame announced today the names of six volleyball greats who will be inducted as the Class of 2009 into its hallowed halls in Holyoke, Mass., the sport's birthplace. The newest induction class consists of Ana Beatriz Moser of Brazil, Ivan Bugaenkov and Nikolai Karpol of Russia, Paul Libaud of France, Holly McPeak of the United States and Siegfried Schneider of Germany. Libaud was selected as an administrator, Karpol was honored in the coach category and the four remaining individuals were selected as players.

"The six members selected for the 2009 Volleyball Hall of Fame show a remarkable distinction of success in the sport of volleyball," said Doug Beal, co-chair of the Volleyball Hall of Fame Selection Committee. "This induction class exemplifies diversity among represented countries and gender in areas of administrative leadership, coaching and both indoor and beach disciplines. This group continues to expand the excellence already inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame."

With the Class of 2009, the Volleyball Hall of Fame showcases its worldwide theme of recognizing the top individuals within the sport. Russia will have its ninth individual enshrined into the Hall, while Brazil will have its fourth inductee. Germany and France are having their first countrymen inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame. A total of 17 different countries are represented in the Volleyball Hall of Fame with at least one inductee.

"As the Hall continues to become more internationally focused, we are delighted to showcase the talents of this class and help recognize the sport's best players, coaches and leaders," Volleyball Hall of Fame President David Casey said.

For additional information on attending the 2009 Volleyball Hall of Fame induction ceremony, contact the Volleyball Hall of Fame at info@volleyhall.org.

2009 Volleyball Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Ana Beatriz Moser (Brazil)
Despite being short in stature (1.85 meters), Ana Beatriz Moser is considered one of the greatest attackers of all time. She played in three Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996) and helped Brazil to the bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, marking her country's first-ever medal in the Olympic Games after losing in the 1992 Olympic Games bronze-medal match. Using a powerful jump serve, Moser was tabbed as the Best Server at the 1992 Olympic Games. She helped Brazil capture its first-ever FIVB World Championship medal with a silver at the 1994 event after leading her country to that season's FIVB World Grand Prix. Moser and Brazil added a silver medal at the 1995 FIVB World Cup. She continued playing for the Brazilian National Team through the 1999 FIVB World Cup as she attempted to a four-time Olympian. However, she retired after the 1999 tournament due to a knee injury that also nearly cost her a chance to compete in the 1996 Olympic Games.

Ivan Bugaenkov (Latvia)
Ivan Bugaenkov, a Latvia native but a competitor for the Soviet Union, was a star on the Soviet Union (USSR) teams that captured back-to-back Olympic gold medals, the first at the inaugural Olympic volleyball competition in 1964 at Tokyo and the second in 1968 at Mexico City. At the Tokyo Olympics, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia tied with identical 8-1 record, but the USSR's 25-5 set record was better than Czech silver medalist's 26-10 set record. In addition, USSR won the head-to-head match with a 15-7 score in the fifth-set tiebreaker. In Mexico City, the Soviets had to recover from a first match loss to the USA to win the gold. Bugaenkov also starred on the USSR teams that won the World Championship in 1960 and 1962, and the European Championship in 1967. He was honored with the USSR Honored Master of Sport in 1964.

Nikolai Karpol (Russia)
Nikolai Karpol, the former USSR/Russian women's volleyball coach, is considered to be one of the most successful and long-serving international coaches in the history of the game. Known as "The Howling Bear," Karpol retired from the post of national team coach after leading the Russian women to the silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. His USSR/Russian teams accumulated over the years two Olympic gold medals (1980, 1988) and two Olympic silver medals (1992, 2000), a gold medal at the FIVB World Championship in 1990, three FIVB World Championship bronze medals (1994, 1998, 2002), three FIVB World Grand Prix titles (1997, 1999, 2002) and eight times European championships (1977, 1979, 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 1999 & 2001). Karpol was elected Coach of the year by the FIVB in 1989 and 1991.

Paul Libaud (France)
After holding the position of president of the French Volleyball Federation from 1945-1947, Paul Libaud was elected the first president of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) at its founding Congress in 1947 in Paris, and served in that role until 1984 - a total of 37 years. He is credited with growing the FIVB from its original 13 founding members to over 150 members in 1984, while starting the Men's World Championship in 1949 and adding the Women's World Championship in 1952. He is also credited with getting volleyball on the Olympic Games schedule commencing in Tokyo in 1964. The charismatic Libaud enlisted the services of numerous world leaders in various FIVB roles that promoted volleyball and resulted in the FIVB being one of the great sport federations when he retired in 1984. On his retirement, he was awarded the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Order and given the FIVB title President Emeritus. Libaud died at the age of 89 on April 2, 1994.

Holly McPeak (United States)
Holly McPeak, a three-time beach volleyball Olympian for the United States, competed in the first three Olympic Games events for the discipline - 1996, 2000 and 2004. She earned the Olympic bronze medal in 2004 with partner Elaine Youngs after consecutive fifth-place finishes with Nancy Reno in 1996 and Misty May-Treanor in 2000. She holds 72 career beach titles, including 19 FIVB titles, two FIVB Grand Slam events titles and 53 domestic titles. In 2002, McPeak became the first woman worldwide to surpass $1 million career earnings and retired in May 2009 with over $1.5 million in career earnings. She was named the MVP in three different USA leagues, along with being an eight-time Best Defensive Player of the Year in those three leagues.

Siegfried Schneider (Germany)
As one of its veteran players, Siegfried Schneider sparked the German Democratic Republic (DDR or East Germany) team to the silver medal at the 1972 Olympic Games. East Germany defeated the Soviet Union during the semifinals of the 1972 Olympic Games, but lost its chance for the gold medal with a four-set loss to Japan. Schneider played a key role in East Germany winning its first-ever FIVB World Cup in 1969 and its first-ever FIVB World Championship in 1970 with a dramatic five-set win over Bulgaria. During the 1968 Olympic Games, he helped East Germany to a fourth-place finish in which he played all nine matches. East Germany was 6-3 in the round robin format at the 1968 Olympic Games.
