Snow Volleyball

I thought you might like to see these photographs, I am currently in Canada in a small Village called Rossland, where I am skiing. Over this last weekend they had the Rossland Winter Carnival and I got involved in the snow powder volleyball competition.

Having made a court out of soft fluffy snow we played round robin games, hard to move in the snow, easy to dive but as the games went on, the snow gets compacted down and a little hard to dive on , but generally quite reasonable players.

PS: It was about minus 10.

Back to the Future

What will English Volleyball look like in twelve years time, for example in the year 2022?

Predicting the future is always going to be a risky business and the most likely out come is that you will end up with egg on your face. Back in 1997, as part of the EVA strategic plan (1998-2002), Volleyball England had a go at predicting the future, with their vision of the sport for the year 2010.

The 2010 Milestone:

"Volleyball will be one of the top 5 team sports for men and women in England, measured by the number of participants, media exposure and sponsorship"

  • 2,000 volleyball clubs offering volleyball opportunity for men's and women's club teams in national, regional and local leagues and for boys and girls at regional and local level.
  •
  • Professional Management and delivery structures at national and regional level.
  •
  • Regular TV coverage of English volleyball and beach volleyball.
  •
  • A semi-professional league for men's and women's club teams, attracting regular audiences in excess of 1,000 spectators.
  •
  • English club teams competing and winning in European club competition.
  •
  • England senior and junior teams competing and winning in the European Championships.
  •
  • Volleyball as the number one net game in the national curriculum.
With London 2012 funding (unknown to anyone in 1997), the senior teams are competing and winning in Europe, the rest appears a little off the mark today but back in the mid 90's and without going into too many details. I recall things were a little different, there was far more volleyball, more sponsorship, more TV coverage, more spectators and the odd team did play in Europe.

Finnish Volleyball

I thought I would share some images and facts about Finnish Volleyball, I'm currently into my 2nd year in Finland and impressed by the amount of  volleyball that is around in the country.

* The first one I heard about was the homenokat volleyball tournament. It is a veteran's volleyball tournament from over 35s (women) through to over 65s (men). Teams from around the country travel to what is known as the Middle Finland volleyball region to take part in a weekend event.

* The second thing learnt was the semi-pro league taking place, with a maximum of 2 foreign players per team, audiences between 300 and 1500 per match and weekly TV broadcasts (now reduced due to financing package), live teletext updates, full utilisation of game statisticians and just 2 line judges per match.

Interesting fact, Alex Bialokoz played a few years ago, so did, more recently, Nathan Bennett. Currently Shah Ramadoo is coaching a women's team. I have just left my team/s in pursue of a trip to Greece!!!

* The third, is sitting volleyball leagues take place, consisting of a national league and division 1 and over 45s categories. It still features some players from the Bronze Medal team of 2000 - That's the Paralympic Bronze if you didn't know.

Then there is the annual beach sitting volleyball tournament, held during the summer, during which time, there is approximately 22hrs of sunlight, and nightfall never exists, just a forever dust and dawn.

* Fourth, the world largest youth tournament is held annually. Last year, we experience, sun, rain, a bit of snow/hail, wind and cold. Over 300 courts of youth volleyball. Surprisingly, most teams come from Finland, where the population of the nation is less than the amount of people living in London. The new FIVB President Wei made an appearance with a nice gold FIVB badge.

The Power Cup is situated at the Seinäjoki horse track, over 900 teams take part, 8500 youngsters from 7 to 22 years of age. More than 4,500 games are played on 300 outdoor courts during four competition days!

The court plan showing the 300 courts at the Seinäjoki horse track

* Fifth, last summer, the only team to beat Brazil was, in fact, none other than the Finnish Men Volleyball Team. With an Italian head coach, the Finnish National Team is getting the nation's hopes up for a representation in the 2012 games.

Another interesting fact, the Canadian born British player, Jason Haldane is currently playing in Serie 1 team based in Monza, coincidently coached by the Head Coach of Finland. Jason plays along side two Finnish national team players in Monza. I'm not too sure if he is meant to play middle, but being a volleyball player, I guess he could play anywhere on the court.

* 6th, Finland and Sweden host one of the Swatch FIVB world tour events, annually in Åland as the PAF Open. PAF stands for 'Play Amongst Friends'. Last year, Andres Pienaar was there as a referee.

He was nominated 1st referee during the women bronze medal match. There are a pair of Finnish sister's who play on the FIVB World Tour. They are currently based in Greece playing for a club there.

There are plenty of opportunities to catch up with Volleyball in Finland:

* Power cup is during the beginning of June to coincide with their school holidays.
http://lentopalloliitto-fi.directo.fi/powercup/home/ Entry is already opened.

* World League starts in June, Finland play against USA, Russia and Egypt. Tickets last year were around 25E per match.

* The Majola Beach Tournament is held every July. There is now a flight direct from Stansted to Laapeenranta, the city where the tournament is held. http://personal.inet.fi/yhdistys/esi/beachvolley_ENG.html

* The Swatch FIVB World Tour event is held during August on the scenic island of Åland. http://www.pafopen.com/

* Homenokat tournament has open entrants for veterans, it's held every September, just before the Finnish season commences.

If anyone wants/needs further advice on Volleyball in Finland, feel free to send me an email, Ng Kwok kwok.w.ng@gmail.com

Oh, I almost forgot to mention, Hugh McCutcheon (USA Head Coach and Olympic Gold Medal Men coach) is hosting a coaching clinic on the differences of coaching Men and Women's volleyball. It will be held on the weekend of the 17-19th March 2010 and in Tampere. Tampere has an excellent link with Stansted Airport with Ryanair, so if you want to travel light for the clinic, book early. There are only 30 places reserved for international coaches and visitors. http://www.lentopalloliitto.fi/koulutus/pro_hvt2/19-21_3_2010/pro_hvt_in_english/

Olympic Volleyball at your local venue?

Foreign teams who do not set-up pre-Games training camps in the UK before the London 2012 Olympics will not be able to share in a £9 million fund promised by Sebastian Coe. Each country will receive the money towards the cost of their preparations when they reach an agreement to train at one of the 600 London 2012-approved training camp facilities.

A number of countries have already signed agreements with cities and towns in Britain, including major teams such as Jamaica and the United States who will be based in Birmingham to smaller countries, like British Virgin Islands who have reached agreement to train in Aston, a small village in Hertfordshire.

Cities and towns in Britain, however, are increasingly facing opposition from other European regions, who are hoping to enjoy some of the economic benefits of London hosting the Olympics. These include Calais who, have launched "Mission 2012", a multi-million pound marketing campaign to persuade overseas teams to train there. Among their main selling points is that Calais is only 21 miles from Dover and London is easily accessible in an hour by the Eurostar. Uzbekistan and Senegal have already reached agreements to train there and now they have been joined by Chad.

A spokeswoman for London 2012 said, “We are offering grants of up to £25,000 towards the cost of using the facilities in our Pre-Games Training Camp guide. "All of the facilities in the guide are UK-based."

GB Volleyball stars celebrate students success

Two volleyball stars from the Sheffield-based GB squad took time out of training to celebrate the achievements of pupils from four city schools. Jenn Thom and Joanne Morgan, part of the GB squad based at the English Institute of Sport, presented awards to children who have completed the six-week Playing for Success (PfS) programme at the venue.

Almost 60 children from Greenlands Junior School, Stradbroke Primary School, Windmill Hill Primary School and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School received a prize and certificate at the presentation night. Three children from each school were awarded special prizes.
Jakki Marshall, centre co-ordinator for Playing for Success at EIS Sheffield, which is operated by Sheffield International Venues (SIV), said: “Playing for Success continues to go from strength to strength at EIS Sheffield and hundreds of local children have now benefitted from this programme.

“We are very grateful to Jenn and Joanne for taking the time to attend the presentation night and they were a great inspiration to the children.”

The PfS study support centre at EIS Sheffield aims to raise standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT and increasing self esteem in children aged 10 – 14 years old.

Sessions are designed to motivate young people to learn through sporting activities, supported by elite athletes who train at the venue. The sessions use state-of-the-art IT equipment and the latest games consoles to provide health, literacy and numeracy challenges.
