A number of new events are planned for this years: The Devon School Beach Volleyball Championships (held at Exmouth for the first time), we will also be looking to run a small "Over 60's" pairs event before the main Beach 4's tournament on the 4th July. Local club players will also be able to enter a couple of evening mixed pairs events.

More permanent courts this year:

A couple of permanent beach courts were erected on the beach two years ago with help from the club, the local council has been pleasantly surprised by their popularity, not just with beach users and volleyball players but in generating PR for the town. They have performed well and in general have not been vandalized, toward the end of last summer, the council doubled the number of courts to four (at their own expense). They have plans to develop the Beach Volleyball area further and will be meeting with us later to discus ideas.

Entry forms for all the above events will be added to the www.ExmouthBeachVolleyball.com web site, as soon as they become available, for more info please contact the Exmouth Beach Volleyball Director, Ali West on aliwest31@yahoo.co.uk

Match Photos

Time for a few more photos from Jon McGugan, recent matches and a quick update on venue coffee machines.

Birmingham University

Two months back Birmingham Uni Women (strangely playing at Aston Uni) v Dulwich Tuskers. Excellent cappuccino machine at Aston and very cheap. Result: University of Birmingham v Dulwich Taskers 3-0 (25-10 25-9 25-16).

More recently Coventry and Warwick Riga Women and Men v Polonia. A very friendly venue (unless you are a ref of course and a match is in progress).

Men: Very close first two sets but C&W Riga threw away opportunities to win them both, final result: Coventry & Warwick Riga v London Polonia 0-3 (23-25 28-30 21-25).

Women: Close first set but Polonia then took control and made it look easier and easier, final result: Coventry & Warwick Riga v London Polonia 0-3 (25-27 15-25 17-25)

25 Years of Volleyball

Torexe Volleyball Club is celebrating 25 years of volleyball this season and will be marking the occasion with a Buffet and Barn Dance on Friday 23rd April 2010 (Volleybash 25). All current and past members are invited and even if you can not make it, we would like to hear from any past members around the country. Tickets available from Rachel.Swindell@Network100.co.uk

The club was formed in 1984 as the "Clifton Hill VC", taking it's name from the Exeter Clifton Hill SC, the club expanded rapidly and in 1987 changed it's name to the "Exeter VC" and combined with "Torbay VC" to form the "Exeter & Torbay" VC, but it's known to everyone as "Torexe". [The first three letters of Torbay & Exeter]

The club continued to grow and reached it's peak towards the end of the 90's with 13 adult teams, in seven different leagues, which included two National League teams in both the Ladies and Men's Division Two. The club has down sized since then but still runs four weekly training sessions. Over 2,000 people (or 2% of the population of Exeter) have played or trained with Torexe during the 25 years and at one point we were the biggest user of public sports hall time in the city.

NEWS

Women's Sitting Volleyball Launched in Britain

Volleyball England have announced that Great Britain Sitting Volleyball will include a women’s development programme for the first time in the sports history. The programme aims to recruit and develop players for top-level competition in time for major competitions, including the London Paralympics 2012.

The announcement was made alongside confirmation of the programme’s 2010 schedule of events where it was also revealed that recruitment drives, training sessions and competitions will take place at devoted "Sitting Centres" that have recently been established in England, Scotland and Wales to help support the Great Britain Programmes.

The programme is currently being led by John Bestebroer, the former coach of Dutch women’s national sitting volleyball squad that won the bronze medal in Beijing 2008 Paralympics while Gordon Neale, the senior manager for Disability Sports Events, is the team manager.

Matt Rogers, the sitting volleyball development manager, said: “These are exciting times for Sitting Volleyball and the future looks very promising.

"The formation of a Great Britain Women’s Sitting Volleyball Development Programme comes at a time when sitting volleyball is continuing to grow ahead of 2012.

"The men’s programme has gone from strength to strength, so the momentum has been easy to pick up for the women’s programme.

"London 2012 offers a great opportunity for sitting volleyball: we are confident that if we get the right athletes training in the right environment more frequently than our rivals we can accelerate the programmes and be able to compete with the world in 2012.

"Our GB squads are by no means finalised, we are still recruiting via our regional centres.

"We’ve already seen considerable growth of interest in the sport and now have around 150 people playing regularly in the UK, up from just 40 in summer 2009. "I would encourage anyone who’s interested to get involved with our programmes: you never know; you could be representing your country in a few years’ time on a world stage."

Sitting volleyball was introduced to the Paralympic Games in 1980 as a men’s sport, and later as a women’s sport at the Athens Paralympics in 2004. Britain hopes both men’s and women’s squads will compete in the London 2012 Games: the first time Great Britain will put forward sitting volleyball teams to compete in the Paralympics.

What's in your ref's bag?

[For this item, please ignore guidelines on what we should or should not do as a match official and any possible insurance and equipment ownership issues.]

Last year I attended a match as a spectator and hence I did not have my referees match bag with me. For this particular triangular fixture, the home team had forgotten to bring a set of score sheets, once this was known, someone was dispatched to collect one but they would not make it back in-time for the start of the first match. Personally I was surprised to find that none of the appointed referees had, or had even considered carried a spare score sheet? I and several other ref's I know, always carry spare score sheets in our ref's bag, I recall being advised to on my EVA ref course (back in the 80’s).

Since this incident, I have been asking referees (from Local, Regional & National matches) the following question: What do you carry in your ref's bag?

Items carried by most referees I have asked:

  • Whistle, Spare Whistle, Cards, Pressure Gauge, Ball Pump, Pens, FIVB Rule Book, Hand Book, Referees Guidelines, Rotation Slips, Net Height Measure.

Additional items carried by a few (and why):

  • Spare score sheets.
  • BUCS rules and score sheet (BUCS teams don’t always know the match rules).
  • Regional and Local league rules etc as required.
  • White insulation tape (for fixing antenna sleeves in position).
  • Marking pens (can be used to quickly make a scoreboard from A5 flyers, obtained from reception).
  • Scissors.
  • Small screwdriver set (for cleaning out floor bolt holes).
  • Old towel (floor mopping).
  • Roll of finger tape (players always seen to ask you for some).
  • Plasters (players always seen to ask you for some).
  • Delays in the Game document
  • FIVB Case book.

Items carried by Ref’s who like to get involved:

  • Line flags (for the use off)
  • Match ball (teams don’t always have a match ball)
  • Small floor sucker (for removing post bolt covers, school sport halls often have these locked away at weekends)
  • First Aid box & chemical ice packs.

Useful items from your Car Tool Kit

  • Adjustable spanners (for floor bolts and jammed height adjustment bars on several types of post systems)
  • Bag of cable ties (always useful).
  • Cutters

Miscellaneous

Replacement net tension handle locking nuts and bolts for SportSet post systems [M6 20mm grade 8.8 tensile strength]. (A safety issue, often incorrectly replaced or fitted by club or sports centre staff with anything they can find from the local DIY shop, cost 8p each, donated to the post owners for installation).

This is the list of items I have collected so far, I’m sure it’s not complete, the question is: What useful items do you carry in your match bag, and why, please let us know….

New Beach Centre

The first stone of a new beach volleyball Development Centre in Lorca, Spain, was laid today, a new initiative which officials hope will help the country close the gap on its rivals in the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics.

Spain has enjoyed relative success in FIVB competitions, most recently finishing fifth in the FIVB 2007 Men’s World Cup.

The goal of the new development is to become best beach volleyball center in Europe, and the two best Spanish beach volleyball teams, Herrera-Gavira and Mesa-Lario, and trainer Sixto Jimenez also attended the event.

The Development Centre will have an area of 8.358´8 square meters and the project has a budget of £1.82 million. The building of the complex will be in two phases, with phase one devoted to the construction of changing rooms, four beach volleyball areas, a gym and a covered beach volleyball sports hall, and phase two dedicated to a second wing of the building and a volleyball sports hall.

The first phase is due to be completed in eight months, with the exception of the beach volleyball sports hall, which will take a year to build. The Centre will host all the Spanish Federation beach volleyball programmes, at both grassroots and senior levels, as well as the men’s and women’s teams hoping to represent Spain in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Martin Santos said: "The construction of this centre places Spain in the front row of beach volleyball. "These outstanding facilities will be unique and only comparable to the centers in Brazil, hence bringing Spanish beach volleyball to the forefront of the sport.”
