Brighton Lad Wins Olympic Grant
Seventeen year old Jake Sweeney was one of a handful of individuals who won a £250 grant from Brighton and Hove city council aimed at encouraging local people to get involved in sport in the run up to the 2012 Olympics.

Jake, a talented beach volleyball player, will be using his grant to fund one-to-one training at NIVEA SUN Yellowave Beach Sports venue on Madeira Drive, Brighton. Jake and his partner Jack Fancy, 15, are hoping to compete in the South East England Junior tournament later this year.

Katie Mintram, Director of Yellowave says “Jake is a fantastic beach volleyball player and has the potential to go really far in the game. It’s great to think that one day he may be representing Brighton as an Olympic hopeful.” Over £10,000 was handed out in total by the council to both clubs and individuals. The grants aim to encourage participation and help with training. Other sports to secure funding include; tae kwon do, road cycling and cricket.

SWJBT Tour Dates

Summer is on the way as the 2010 South West Junior Dates have all be announced and the tour starts in Bournemouth on the 5th June, stopping in Croyde, Weston, Exmouth (SW Junior Champs), Sandbanks (British Junior Champs), Weymouth and Wales (Welsh Junior Champs) finishing in the SWJBT Finals at the Animal Windfest on the 11/12 Sept. The age groups are U12, U14, U16 and U18. While the U12 and U14 are open to 3 a side teams, we are encouraging players in this age group to compete as a pair if they are up for the challenge.
The SWJBT is open to all regions (except the SW Champs at Exmouth and The SW Finals at the Windfest). We are spreading the word and providing more junior events out there to play in.

Last year we had ground breaking number of entries and we are hoping to surpass that in our second year. Page Nelmes and Annie Tinker who won the Girls U18 Tour last year were selected to represent GBR at the World U21 Championships in Blackpool. From small junior events who knows where things will take you?

Coaching camps during the Whitsun Half Term are scheduled in Bournemouth 1st June, Bath 2nd June and Croyde on the 3rd of June. They are open to all juniors who would like some coaching on the beach game.

Keep an eye on our new web http://www.swjbt.co.uk for the latest tour news and entry forms etc.

See you on the sand ...

If you haven't already don't forget to join our SWJBT Facebook page as we will be adding more albums, it looks like a promising summer ahead, all we need is the weather to go with it.

Whats in your Refs Bag - Update

More likely what is in my car just in case. I have most of the items in the list except the flags and cable ties.

I carry a spare scoreboard as well as scoresheets as I have used both at venues that forgot when I arrived. I also have adjustable lengths of elastic with hooks on the ends to go round the posts to hold the net to the posts as the green net holders were missing at one venue I went too.

Being a coach, as well as a referee I am aware of all members needs, I even have spare knee pads which I have lent to teams.

Net Tension Handle Locking Nuts

A few people have come back, asking for more details on where they can purchase replacement Net Tension Handle locking nuts for Sportset post systems. As highlighted in the last issues, this is a M6 20mm or 16 mm grade 8.8 tensile bolt and cost about 8p each, you can purchase them in specialist yacht rigging shops or specialist car engine work shops etc.

Personally I have also always reverse the nut & bolt arrangement on Sportset posts, so the bolt head is inward facing and the nut is on the out side of the tension handle. This way the bolt does not cut into the kevlar headline when operated and allows more space for the headline to pass through.

For the technically minded: Rated bolts tend to come in three grades, Grade 8.8 (120,000psi / 60 tons/Inch²), Grade 10.9 (150,000psi / 75 ton/Inch²), Grade 12.9 (176,000psi / 88 ton/Inch²). The grade 8.8 (the weaker of the three) will bend when it gets near it's limit or the end of it's working life, thereby giving a visual indicator, the grade 10 & 12 will just snap when overloaded, without any indication.
