Tamworth
VC
 |
Tamworth Volleyball Club is a dynamic, growing club with five competitive squads (three men’s, one ladies’ and a mixed team - and with a view to possibly establishing a second ladies' team at some point) which play across the West Midlands and Leicester Leagues. |
The club is currently looking to recruit further new players of all abilities - but especially those with competitive experience at local or National League level. Training and matches are spread across Sundays (separate men’s and ladies’ sessions), Tuesdays (match nights) and Thursdays (specialist training) with a junior academy on Tuesdays too.
Established in 1982, TVC is one of the largest clubs in the West Midlands and is currently pursuing its Volley 2 accreditation. With excellent training facilities, seven Level 2 coaches and three accredited referees, it is a professionally run outfit which offers playing opportunities for complete novices right up to National League players. With plans also in place for further junior development, a summer tournament and possible National KO Cup entry next season, this is a club with an ambitious growth agenda.

Grade 4 Referee Course
The PBVA are delighted to host a Grade 4 Referee Course at Bournemouth University on May 8th / 9th 2010. The course is being run alongside the VE Level 3 Coaches Course.
This is the first time PBVA have run a Grade 4 referee course since January 2004 and provides the ideal opportunity for
all players to develop their knowledge of the rules and confidence in refereeing the game. We are delighted that VE have appointed Stewart Dunne, experienced International Referee and long-standing VE Referee Commission Member as course tutor.
Please circulate the attached flyer / application form with your club members. Unfortunately there is an age limit of 16
years for the course. If your club has junior members wishing to attend please let me know – we can arrange a Junior Referee Course if we have enough interest.
The course is held over two days leading to the Grade 4 Referee award and costs £35. However, if any members have attended the one day Introductory Course they may gain the G4 award by attending on the Sunday only at a reduced cost of £15. They will need to provide information as to which course they attended and when.
There is a maximum number of attendees of 24 so please encourage your members to apply.
Regards, Nick Heckford nick.heckford@tiscali.co.uk

Cappuccino Report
 |
I am impressed with what has been set up at Kettering Conference Centre (but if you go there check on map or internet as I suspect they have changed the roads since they put
directions on web site). Staff are very friendly, they even supply newspapers to read in the brief moments available to have a drink. My usual test of cappuccino, they pass with a very reasonable drink at a very reasonable price. |

British Universities Volleyball Finals
|
The 42nd British Universities Volleyball Championships were held in Sheffield on 12-14 March 2010, as part of the BUCS Championships which saw 26 sports contest their finals in the city, over five days, and saw over 6,200 competitors give their all.
Volleyball is one of the larger Championships, with a Final 8 Tournament for Men’s and Women’s Championships, and a Final 4 for the Men’s and Women’s Trophy all in the same venue over the weekend. Twenty four teams, two hundred and seventy players and coaches, twenty three nationalities – a great mix, excellent environment and atmosphere and some great volleyball...... |
| ......A crowd of over 200 watched the Championship Finals on a central show court. Good local support for Sheffield Hallam certainly added to the occasion. Other teams simply enjoyed the spectacle and recognised and rewarded good play from all.
Leeds Met Carnegie women, with their Hungarian junior internationals to the fore, looked in control taking the first set 25-19, and at 10-5 in the second it looked all over. But Bath persisted, served well, picked up lots of ball in defence and made the transition offence count. Bath clawed back, applied pressure and went 19-17 in front. Time out, a serve here, an error there, and momentum swung as Leeds Met took the set, and the Championship for the first time, 25-22.
|
 |
 |
 |
In the men’s final Leeds Met started all guns blazing, as defending champions would. Great passing, distribution and execution and Hallam were put to the sword 25-20. Hallam re-grouped, Callum Green and Simon Mintoft blocked, scored points and the tide turned. Leeds Met errors, Hallam pressure, marvellous defence by Matt Howe and the second set to Sheffield Hallam 25-19. Game on in the decider! Full on hitting, met by spectacular back court defence, massive blocking and great excitement for the crowd as Sheffield Hallam wrested back the Crown 15-10.
Jim Miller (Sheffield Hallam) and Dori Kun (Leeds Met Carnegie) were awarded the Lucozade Sport Player of the Final Awards.

U15 Final
Birmingham U15 Finals 20/21st March 2010 Camp Hill School Birmingham,
truly a wonderful venue, long may it be available. Just shows what can be done at a school (agreed it is grant maintained) and only 3 years old. Hopefully the VE paper (Indoor Sports Facilities Strategy) will be implemented in a lot of places.
Most photos now up, as before if anyone is particularly interested in a photo(s) but doesn't like the exposure, colour balance or cropping please let me know. Warning: Boys Gallery 5 is very
large, gallery 6 is even bigger.
There was some great kit at the U15,16 and 18 events, sadly a lot of teams seem to think there is something good about plain dark blue and black. ASL U18 Girls and U15 Tettenhall Tigers Girls were particularly good and a great example to people who want to promote volleyball instead of hiding it away in the dark.

Cappuccino Report

Sadly no cappuccino but the coffee was very good and the catering showed what can be done at very reasonable prices. Lighting very good and the school staff I met were outstandingly friendly.
It was interesting to observe how often coaches were calling balls out on the end line that landed in. |
