LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dig London

This summer, London’s most beautiful park and the UK’s most successful club combine to bring you a festival of volleyball.
On Saturday May 29th, we’ll be holding the first Dig London tournament at the Hub in London’s Regent’s Park.

Whether you’re an experienced volleyball player, a beginner or just want to “have a go”, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for you to join in.

If you like your sun with no more exertion than eating an ice-cream, why not come along and watch one of the world’s most popular sports. You might even spot a passing kangaroo!

It's Free to Organise Your Teams on Teamer

Hi folks, Teamer.net is an online team management service that uses email and text messaging to automate the notification of team events. Teamer.net was created by team organisers, for team organisers. Since its launch in September 2008, over 285,000 people across the British Isles have joined the Teamer community. Teamer is completely free to use, including all text messages that leave the system. Teamer also provides a private and secure web space where you can:

  • Blog: Chat with team-mates about the game, arrange transport and social occasions.
  • Upload Photos: Profile pics, team pics, actions shots – load them up!
  • Check your team’s line-up for the upcoming game.
  • Cancel events with the click of a button.

It has made life much easier (and cheaper!) for people like you and I. Here’s a demo that will show you how Teamer works: Link to Demo

Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s a testimonial from Denise Austin (Volleyball-Community Development Coach):

Dear Volleyball Club Organisers,
The Academy of Beach Sports has been using Teamer.net to organise our members and events for the past two years.
When we first started I was a little sceptical as it meant more organisation to add the details to the site and just thought it would be more hassle than it was worth but as I had been encouraged by a fellow organiser who swore by it we gave it a go.

We now have every year group, as well as all our U16/U18 SW League teams and South West Junior Grand Prix teams, that's 210 members signed up.

Creating events, competitions, match schedules, training though teamer has allowed us to be better prepared in advance and if you’re busy you know how valuable that is!

For the SW Mini Volleyball Championships on the 15th May, we sent out a teamer invite to all of the 79 junior U14 members to let them know about the event and they can with one click or one text let us know if they are playing.

During the winter when the winds were really strong we had an event organised with 34 people signed up to drive to Melksham, the met office were advising against unnecessary travel and we took the wise but reluctant decision not to travel. With one click on the website we were able to send out texts to all the parents to let them know it had been cancelled. Of the 34 people only 4 turned up at the meet point, which given that some were already on route and it was only sent within 20 minutes of meeting was pretty great!

When you first start creating the info, check out the spread sheets that can be uploaded, which makes your life adding details much easier, our club member data base is now collected and entered using the required format needed to add them easily to the teamer website.

With 250 members of our club it has been one of the most valuable organizational tools since the group text and email. It’s free to use, and you can confirm via the website or to respond to invites by text players are only charged the normal text rates. It’s well worth signing your team up!

Nikolai Karpol - book now available

A few years ago we reviewed the book "Karpol: Lunatics - That's What I Need" ( http://www.volleyballnewsletter.com/reports/karpol.htm ) but the book soon disappeared and since then I have received heaps of emails asking where can we get hold of a copy. The author, Tomislav Birtic has now been in contact with us, to say that it is now available again on the American Amazon & Createspace web sites.

If you are new to the game or too young to remember, then have a quick look at this three minute video, this is how most people will remember Nikolai Karpol, the book tells a different story.

The video clip is from Russia v Cuba in 1991, his team are 2 sets up at the start of the video (they go on to lose the match 17-16 in the fifth set)

Exeter Challenge Results

Twenty three teams from Cornwall to Birmingham (plus a few players from Liverpool & Nottingham) all traveled to Exeter to take part in this years set of challenge events. The challenge, can your team come out on top in a series of 17 minute timed matches, it's fast, intense and fun.

1st: Plymouth

2nd: South Birmingham

A complete cross section of teams take part each year and it's a great place to meet and play against new teams, the later part of the event always produces a number of closely fought matches and this year did not disappoint, as both finals were decided by a single point. You can checkout more photos from the event at Exeter Challenge 2010 , good luck to all the teams who were practicing for their Inter Regional and Crown Service events next month.

1st: Cardiff Wildcats 2nd: SWVA U17
