Rio

Tom (Lord) and I are about to play in our FIVB World Tour tourney of the season, first stop Myslowice, Poland. We have just returned from six weeks pre-season training in Rio. Follow our journey on the tour where you can read about all our latest exploits and all the latest news from the beach volleyball world!

I just updated the website and thought you might want to check it out. To visit, just click on the links below www.jodygooding.com

See you on a beach somewhere

Jody and Tom

and so it begins ............
The weather has been perfect for some good training, mid 30's everyday and light breezes across the beach. We met up with out team of coaches and spent the first week going through all aspects of the game for them to get an idea of where we are and to inform their plan for plan for training over the coming weeks. The heat was a shock to the system but thanks to some of the physical work we did in preparation for our trip and to the supplements that we brought with us, we were able to keep up the pace in sessions and have already begun making significant progress towards match readiness for the 2010 season.

Training on Ipanema beach in the 'Zona Sul' region of Rio we have an inspiring view of the mountains as a backdrop and the clear, cold ocean to jump in and cool off after sessions. We have currently scheduled 8 technical sessions per week with our coaching team, Monday to Saturday with 3 weights / stability sessions per week and 3 - 4 cardio vascular sessions per week on top. Our technical sessions are usually in the morning before the heat of the day arrives and our physical or second session in the late afternoon.

NEWS

GB Men v Azerbaijan
The best performance by GB Men I have witnessed (so far). Needing to win 3-0 and not let Azerbaijan get 60 points the whole team played with confidence and maturity making very few unforced errors and with a demonstration of how to serve that all teams in England (as I haven't seen Irish or Scots teams play) would do well to learn from.

Even when Azerbaijan pulled back to 14-14 in the third set they kept it together and made it one of the shortest matches I have been to. Coach Harry Brokking said the season's experience in pro leagues by the players had improved their play considerably. Of particular note was the success of the GB block. Full Results: GB Men v Azerbaijan 3-0 (25-18,25-12,25-18)

EIS have installed some automatic doors so I kept trying to push them open as they retreated from me. Must be a sign of advancing age. Other than that EIS was looking good.

Sadly the Womens game was cancelled due to Ash and played a "friendly" against Middlesborough Men.

It's the Wrong Richmond

Sometimes clicking on the wrong web link can yield some interesting results. E.G. Richmond Volleyball Club Central Virginia (not London) has recently moved into their brand new venue.......

Between our two sites, we have 10 courts and our facilities include concession stands, a pro shop, and showers.... Currently, RVC has nearly 2,500 active members and up to 230 teams participating in evening recreational leagues from Sunday through Friday. RVC also supports 40 USAV juniors teams annually. The club hosts many adult and juniors USAV tournaments, including regionals. In addition, RVC sponsors outdoor tournaments, skills clinics, referee training, and other special events related to the promotion of volleyball...the sport for a lifetime.

Q. How much to become a member? - Our individual membership year runs from September to September. Joining in the beginning of our membership year the rate is $50.

Q. How much does a team cost? - For nine weeks of play and a tournament, teams pay between $310 and $360 depending on when they submit their application. This works out to be about $6 per night per player. Many teams find a corporate sponsor for their team fee. Most matches are officiated by RVC for teams which cost $175 extra. Teams may choose to officiate matches themselves to save the $175 fee

Sunday 25 April 2010
U18 Men's another 5 setter so almost same number of photos as the U18 Women. For those who look at them I do know that a lot of photos look very similar. Reason is simple it takes too long to cut out the almost identical photos and the more consistent the player is the more likely pictures of them will look the same.

U18 Men Newcastle Staffs beat Wessex 3-2 (25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 24-26, 15-5) / U18 Women Ashcombe beat Wessex 3-2 ( 25-20, 20-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-12) / U16 Boys Wessex beat Boswells 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) / Sitting England beat Wales 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 28-26)

U16 Girls final: Tameside beat Newcastle Staffs 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20)

Cappuccino Report
Lots of photos to process so will take a while. Only downside of venue is lack of cappuccino. Other than that the food and normal coffee very good and everyone I came across helpful and friendly. Lighting good. Definitely need more practice at sitting, it all happens so quickly.

Police mugged in prison

HMP Wormwood Scrubs - 25 April 2010: Tunnel Diggers v Met Police (Men’s D2 Red - London Volleyball League)

For their first coming together this season I was charged with applying the rules of the game and of the London Volleyball League to the Scrubs prison inmates and the Metropolitan Police. As the referee my job was to ensure observance of these rules and disallow any advantage from breaking them, a concept both teams were familiar with but perhaps from different perspectives.

Before arriving I had thought it insensitive, even tasteless to comment on the work of the Mets team and the ‘work’, or time being served, by their opponents in prison. I was worried that simple gaffs in my phrasing about ‘courts’, ‘crossing the line’ or ‘sitting on the bench’ might spark a riot. I was wrong.

During pre-match checks with the scorer and his two assistants a conversation started. Clearly they hadn’t been told who their opposition was and on seeing the visiting team name on the score sheet the question came, “Are we playing the Met Police?” followed by, “Are they police officers?” and then “If we beat them, then that will be our revenge!” Not knowing exactly what their intention was I replied, “as far as I know, the Met Police team is made up of serving police officers”.

However, it was all quite amicable and that conversation along with the match itself revealed much more than was said in words. Outside the field of sports, in our case volleyball, it is just unimaginable to see police officers and prisoners having fun together. The London Volleyball Association has included teams of inmates from HMP Wormwood Scrubs and HMP Wandsworth in the league for many years and while the prison governors and staff support it and the league teams don’t mind too much about the ‘double away’ fixtures everybody wins.

And the mugging? Well the score says it all – Tunnel Diggers won 3-0. That’s a mugging we can all understand and no doubt especially sweet being only their second win of the season after 12 matches.

Additional Info:
Two prisons play in the London League and because the second division is now large enough to divide into two (north and south) Wormwood Scrubs have played in the North and Wandsworth in the South for the last three seasons. The gym at Wormwood Scrubs (who play as Tunnel Diggers) is excellent, if not well lit but the one at Wandsworth (Arrows) is only just large enough and you have to stand with one foot on court in order to serve. On the other hand, noise reverberates around the hall making for an exciting atmosphere. This season the standard of volleyball has been better than usual and the PTI puts it down to having several Polish inmates.
