Watch your Equipment
Not sure if it's a sign of the current economic climate or down to new venue owners but I have heard
of two stories recently where Sport
Centers
owners have decided to get ride of, or sell unwanted / unrecognized equipment in their store
rooms.
One double court venue has disposed of a set of volleyball posts (leaving just
one set!), another clubs has seen their long training net and associated
equipment disappear? It unusual to hear stories like this, so if
it's not locked away, you may wish to take steps to highlight your equipment
with the venue staff / owners.

Olympic
Tickets and Match Schedule
More than six million tickets for the London 2012 Olympic Games will go on sale from March
15. The process for 6.6 million Olympic Games tickets available to the general public will open for six weeks, enabling people to consider their options before making their final choices and applying.
Applications will close on April 26 and all oversubscribed sessions will be allocated via a ballot process.
People can apply at any point during the six-week application period - it is not a first come, first served process.
The two million people who have already signed up to the London 2012 ticketing database – www.tickets.london2012.com - will receive all the information about how to apply and those who have registered will be able to use their existing log-in details to access the application process.
A total of 8.8 million tickets are available for the Games, including those that will be allocated to sponsors and other members of the Olympic Movement, which are vital to raising £2 billion ($3 billion) from the private sector to stage the event.
Further details on applying for Paralympic tickets will be announced later this year, with prices announced in May. Tickets for the London 2012 Festival events will go on sale in the autumn 2011. [A word of advise,
volleyball is a very popular Olympic sport (I believe only the Athletics will generate
more world wide TV coverage) and hence volleyball is generally the first Olympic
sport to sell out - you have been warned - suggest you get in early.] Also
from the Olympic web site http://www.tickets.london2012.com
"There are also special prices available for young people and seniors across all Olympic sports. Young people who are aged 16 or younger (at 27 July 2012) will 'pay their age' for a ticket. Seniors aged 60 and over (at 27 July 2012) will pay £16. These 'pay your age' ticket prices and senior ticket prices will be available in more than 200
sessions".
The full 2012 match schedule and ticket prices have now been release, the action
at Earls Court kicks off on the 28th July 2012 with the finals on the 12th August
2012, ticket go on sale in a months time.

The
full indoor program is available via ticket master at: http://media.ticketmaster.com/en-gb/img/sys/tournament/london2012/oly-volleyball.pdf Likewise
the Beach Volleyball program also starts on the 28th July, with the finals on

Super 8
Matches
VE Womens Super 8 Polonia IMKA v University of Birmingham
This time Polonia tried to force food and drink on me but sadly in an effort to survive Christmas was forced to decline the food apart from two small tomatoes. As expected the
women's match against Birmingham was over quickly despite Birmingham fighting hard but with only 6 players they were up against it from the start. I even got a lesson in how to open doors without handles from the friendly caretaker.
Even better program (I get a credit). Results: Polonia IMKA v University of Birmingham 3-0 25-11 25-18 25-17
VE Men's Super 8 Polonia v Sheffield
The
men's match against Sheffield was dramatically different to the last men's match I was at here against Leeds. The extra training had obviously worked. This match probably had the longest interruptions due to "conversations" between captains and referees I have witnessed which ended up as a 1-1 draw in yellow cards. Polonia kept getting ahead in the first two sets only to let Sheffield pull back but kept themselves
together to win the first two convincingly. Note images K1437-K1442 although not the most in focus ones are here to show what happens if you think you have won the rally (Sheffield were guilty of leaving a lot of balls that landed in). It was the end of a long rally that Polonia's Andrzej Saller "miraculously" recovered one handed on the third touch and sent it deep to Sheffield's end line. The third set went to Sheffield although Polonia this time got back to within a couple of points near the end. The fourth saw Polonia dominate after recovering from a clever serving spell from Sheffield that forced Polonia into a
substitutions.

The large (well by English standards) crowd were enthusiastic and most happy with results. If only they had better lighting, but apart from this (and the inability of the men to put up advertising banners) this is where Super 8 teams should be in terms of presenting volleyball to the public.

Celtic Cup
Forget Bannockburn, Wallace and Robert the Bruce. The biggest Celtic clash ever will be in Jordanstown on May 22nd. That's the date for the showdown between Northern Ireland and Scotland's top volleyball teams, christened the Celtic Cup and unveiled today by the Northern Ireland Volleyball Association

"A play off between the top four club teams in the Northern Ireland’s 7 Financial National League will decide on the best NI team to compete against the winner of the play offs from the Scottish Schelde Sports National League" said the NI Volleyball Association's Nick Wright.
Margaret Ann Fleming, the Chief Executive Officer of Scottish Volleyball commented "We in Scottish Volleyball are absolutely delighted to be involved in the beginning of such a innovative and exciting venture as the 'Celtic Cup'. Our clubs now have something new to strive towards and helps Scottish Volleyball achieve it's post Olympic aim to be bigger, better and stronger".
“I welcome our Scottish friends and this inaugural Club competition” said the NI Volleyball Association Vice President Patrick Murphy. “I thank all who are supporting this event which I know will be richly entertaining volleyball and Great Craic off court as well”
Patrick Murphy added “This competition is a start which can only go from strength to strength with the boost of the Olympics next year in London”
In Northern Ireland teams will be seeded from the finishing position in the National League. The first
round of the play-offs will feature 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd teams, with the higher seed gaining home
court advantage throughout the play offs. The setup in Scotland is similar, save that teams play over a best-of-three series, with the higher-ranked team having home court advantage in the first, and, if necessary, deciding fixtures.
The Celtic Cup final will take place on Sunday the 22nd May 2011 at the University of Ulster at
Jordanstown. The Cup is a joint effort from both the Scottish Volleyball Association and the Northern Ireland
Volleyball Association to promote the sport to the wider public and at a higher level.
The teams competing in the Northern Ireland Men's 7 League are:
· North Down
· Craigavon Aztecs Eagles
· Ulster Jordanstown
· Ballymoney Blaze
· Lisburn Lynx
· Richhill Raiders |
The teams competing in the Northern Ireland Women's National League are:
· Craigavon Aztecs Eagles
· Ulster Jordanstown
· Lisnaskea Spikers
· North Down
· Queens |
